<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#09599a" class="has-inline-color">Empowering Nurses to Save Newborn Lives: NRP Workshop at Yashoda</mark></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The IC Nursing InnovatorFORUM recently conducted a high-impact educational workshop on the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) at Yashoda Hospital, reinforcing the pivotal role of nursing professionals in improving neonatal outcomes. Hosted by Lt. Col. Radha Rana,Director &#8211; Patient Care services, the workshop was delivered by Dr. Deepika Rastogi, a distinguished pediatrician and an experienced educator in newborn care. The program brought together nurses from labor rooms, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, operation theatres, postnatal wards, and nursing education institutions, reflecting a multidisciplinary commitment to excellence in neonatal care. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dr. Deepika Rastogi led the sessions with a strong focus on the principles of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) 8th Edition, emphasizing the physiological transition of a newborn from fetal to neonatal life. She highlighted that effective breathing is the most critical determinant of a successful transition at birth, with crying serving only as a surrogate marker rather than the primary goal. The sessions reinforced that neonatal resuscitation is not a routine intervention but a targeted, evidence-based response for newborns who fail to breathe adequately. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A central theme of the workshop was the importance of the “Golden Minute,” the first sixty seconds after birth that are crucial for a newborn’s survival and long-term outcomes. Dr. Rastogi explained that essential resuscitation steps providing warmth, drying, positioning the airway, clearing visible secretions, and stimulating breathing must occur simultaneously and efficiently. This approach encouraged nurses to develop rapid assessment skills and clinical readiness, ensuring timely intervention during delivery room emergencies. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The workshop also clearly differentiated neonatal resuscitation from adult and pediatric life support. Dr. Rastogi emphasized that positive pressure ventilation (PPV) is the single most effective lifesaving intervention in neonatal resuscitation, while cardiac compressions are rarely required unless adequate ventilation has failed. By focusing on basic NRP skills, the program empowered nurses to confidently initiate resuscitation while coordinating with physicians for advanced support when needed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teamwork and communication were highlighted as essential components of effective neonatal resuscitation. The importance of pre-resuscitation briefing, role allocation, and seamless coordination between labor room and NICU teams was discussed in detail, particularly in high-risk situations such as preterm deliveries and multiple births. This collaborative, teambased approach was presented as a key strategy for reducing errors and improving newborn outcomes. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An evidence-based discussion on umbilical cord management further enriched the workshop. Dr. Rastogi explained the physiological benefits of delayed cord clamping for both term and preterm infants, including improved hemodynamic stability, reduced risk of intraventricular hemorrhage, and better neonatal adaptation. Participants were encouraged to actively engage with obstetric teams to implement delayed cord clamping whenever clinically appropriate. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, the Neonatal Resuscitation Program workshop organized by IC Nursing InnovatorFORUM and hosted at Yashoda Hospital emerged as a significant educational initiative. Through expert guidance from Dr. Deepika Rastogi and strong nursing leadership, the program underscored the vital role of skilled, confident nurses in saving newborn lives and advancing the quality of maternal and child healthcare.</p>

The tracking of food will give you the skills to undertake product recalls and maintain compliance for your firm by enabling you to keep an eye on your perishable inventory. The greatest food traceability systems make it simple for you to locate details regarding the raw ingredients and manufacturing process of your items, whether they are used in a batch or as a single ingredient.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By improving the traceability systems at various facilities, it would also be prudent to encourage peer-to-peer learning, knowledge transmission, and the development of partnerships between large food sectors and medium- and small-sized firms. It can be challenging to implement efficient traceability systems, especially for businesses of all sizes <strong>(SMEs)</strong>, which might not have the resources and knowledge required to handle intricate supply chains. </p>

The opening segment highlighted the critical importance of a deep understanding of AI technologies, particularly within the healthcare context, where they have the potential to significantly impact patient care and outcomes.</p>

In your extensive career focusing on human physiology, especially in extreme environments, what breakthroughs have you found most significant? How do you see these advancements influencing future defense strategies?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I look back in my 40 years of dedicated service in the Defence Research and Development organization (DRDO), the thrust of my research has been to enhance the health and operational efficiency of troops by providing appropriate life support technologies. Some of the important impactful R&amp;D contributions include two state selection systems, computerised pilot selection system, computerised aptitude testing for trade allocation and creation of a digital database for follow-up. These are in the domain of personnel selection for armed forces to meet the present and emerging needs of personality traits, aptitudes, and motivation. Military nutrition has been rationalised to enhance the combat efficiency in different operational environments, specific clothing requirements including essential cold weather clothing, NBC protective ensembles, Anti-G suit for pilots, submarine escape suit for navy, combat free fall clothing for paratroopers and cooling suit for tank cruise operations in desert have really enhanced the protection and operational efficiency. The clothing and protective ensemble for women combat personnel suiting the anthropometry considerations have also been developed and delivered.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Very innovative life support technologies like onboard oxygen generation (OBOG) system for fighter pilots for long endurance flight. The ergonomic aspects for man mission interface for weapon platform development have also been delivered. Unmanned battlefields including unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned ground vehicle, unmanned underwater vehicles will be used in future warfare. In this man computer interface with AI application play a very important role, the research is in progress to understand complexities involved in this and to address this situation, computer-human interface, image processing, decision support etc are being used. Augmenting soldiers’ performance using traditional systems such as Yoga, herbal medicine and homeopathy have been introduced based on our research. Rapid induction technology support for high altitude military operations have been developed. A novel therapeutic measure using a combination of Nitric oxide and oxygen for the treatment of high-altitude pulmonary edema has been introduced. Prevention control and management of cold injuries in high altitude have reduced morbidity due to frostbite.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A special focus on development of CBRN Defence Technologies has been given during the last two decades which led to the induction of devices for early detection, personal protection, collective protection, decontamination, and medical management. Considering the psycho-social profile of the soldiers, we have been able to formulate, in DRDO, new strategies for military motivation.&nbsp; These are some of the notable R&amp;D contributions where I was fortunate to be part of either in leadership role or participatory role.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7faf8fdad46eaf821212a874c181951b" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">2. How do you envision the collaboration between Academia, Industry, and Government agencies evolving, and what impact could this have on the fields of life sciences and defense research?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The evolving collaboration between academia, industry, and government agencies is crucial for the advancement of all areas of Science and Technology, especially Life Sciences and Defence Research. This tripartite alliance has the potential to leverage the strengths of each sector. This collaborative model which is often referred to as the &#8220;triple helix&#8221; model of innovation has the capability to harness the unique strengths of each sector to push the boundaries of scientific research and technological development. The synergy created by this alliance is additive as well as multiplicative and can foster an environment to address complex challenges through innovative solutions faster and effectively.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Universities and Research Institutions are the cradle of knowledge, research and innovation. The curiosity-driven exploration has led to many breakthrough discoveries in life sciences and defence. The contribution of academic sector is crucial in providing deep insights into biological systems, new materials, and computational models etc. Their research often lays the groundwork for applied technologies and solutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Industry contributes through its ability to scale innovations, turning scientific discoveries into practical applications and products. As the focus is on development, production, and marketing, the industry has been playing a pivotal role in ensuring that the outcome of research reaches the market. The technological prowess and resources of the private sector are critical in transitioning from prototypes to deployed technologies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, the Government agencies contributes through the provision of essential regulatory guidance, funding, and strategic direction for research initiatives that align with national priorities. The Government support is crucial especially in the area of life sciences and defence research as addressing challenges such as public health crises and national security threats are often beyond the scope of individual organizations. The Government policies if framed in a right way, can facilitate collaboration by providing frameworks for intellectual property rights, data sharing, and ethical standards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Together, this tripartite alliance can lead to significant advancements in technologies that enhance soldier survivability and operational efficiency. Innovations in protective gear, medical treatments, and surveillance systems are just a few examples of how this collaboration can yield tangible benefits on the battlefield and beyond. By combining academic research with industry&#8217;s capability to develop durable and effective equipment, and government&#8217;s ability to implement these solutions, the safety and effectiveness of defence personnel are significantly improved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shared goals and challenges can foster Global partnerships bringing together countries and organizations around the world. Global partnerships amplify the impact of research and development efforts through the pooling of resources, knowledge, and expertise to tackle challenges and much more which no single sector can address alone. The future of life sciences and defence research indeed lies in the continued strengthening of these alliances, emphasizing the importance of cooperation, shared vision, and mutual benefit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 21st century belongs to Life Sciences and a lot of exciting discoveries and innovation will come in this century in Biotechnology, Health Technologies, Pharmaceutical domain, precision medicine, Pharmacogenomics, multivalent Vaccines, Telemedicine, Point of Care diagnostic and other related inventions. The tripartite partnership is yet to mature in our country as these 3 stakeholders need to be further strengthened if we have to realise the potential of the triple helix model.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In aspirational India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat is the goal in the defence sector as well. The defence R&amp;D ecosystem needs to harness the potentials available in the civilian sector and the capabilities and capacities need to be augmented in Defence R&amp;D beyond Defence Ministry which includes DRDO, PSUs and ordnance factories. Private sector, industries and academia need to make significant contributions in strengthening the Defence R&amp;D ecosystem through public private partnership (PPP). Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, smart materials and other related disruptive technologies need to be developed by Academia and translated into applications through Defence Industry so that India can assume leadership roles in these niche areas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19e6d08f344932d2b12285a954fb77c7" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">3. Enlighten us with your thoughts about the role of climate change in impacting defence strategies, particularly in the realm of human performance in extreme environments?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The critical role of climate change has multifaceted impacts in shaping defence strategies through its effect on operational environments and the geopolitical landscape. Apart from environmental issues, climate change also catalyses geopolitical instability, conflict, and humanitarian crises which have profound implications on national as well as global security. Climate Change can act as a threat multiplier through exacerbating existing tensions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hence, there is a need to integrate climate resilience into defence planning at every level. A comprehensive assessment of the effect of climate change on the regions of strategic interests including military readiness and response strategies is required. There is a need to equip and train military forces for a wide range of environmental conditions. It includes specialized equipment and clothing, training with respect to adjusting in tactics and logistics while facing extreme weather conditions. Even the military infrastructure including supply chain has to be made resilient against the impacts of climate change through reinforcing structures against extreme weather events etc. Other broader geopolitical implications of climate change include increased migration flows, disputes over the territories and competition over diminishing resources such as fresh water and arable land.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the likelihood of natural disasters happening is increasing, it is important that military forces are well prepared in advance to protect national interests alongside providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Close coordination with civilian agencies, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations will further necessitate and facilitate unforeseen situations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It should not be forgotten that the Defence sector itself consumes resources and is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. Hence, alongside securing against climate change, the focus towards investing in renewable energy sources and adopting green technologies hold great importance in reducing the carbon footprint of military operations. The investment should be made by the Governments for anticipating future challenges. A cultural shift within the military should be prioritized to attain sustainability and resilience. In this way, defence forces can contribute to a more stable and resilient global order.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let us look at the scenario of high-altitude warfare and operations. There is an increasing incidence of extreme weather conditions like avalanches, cloud burst, locust infestation on pasture lands and increasing rainfall and which are unusual weather conditions which will increase due to climate change. Similarly, the desert temperatures may rise leading to heat casualties particularly in battle tank cruise, other infantry and armed forces. Adequate training schedules as well as reorganizing their work scheduled for the variation in temperatures, providing adequate fluid electrolyte, ergogenic drinks and whole-body cooling suit using phase change materials and whole body cooling by peltier effect, vortex tube mechanism and thermoelectric mechanisms. These are few technologies we need to adapt for desert operations. The future wars may be fought for water as that will become scarce over a period considering the demand &amp; supply from natural resources. Weather may be used as a weapon like artificial rains, induced desert storms etc. The armed forces and the defence research organizations need to work in tandem with academia and industries for evolving mitigation, resilience and adaptation to climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cef8a5ef830122cb1d6cb9a7d604a052" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">4. What role do you see for artificial intelligence in the future of defence research, particularly in areas related to human performance and bio-defence?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Artificial Intelligence (AI) shall redefine the strategic and operational landscape of the military forces. AI is able to process vast datasets that can aid in intelligence analysis to enhance human performance and to face complex bio-defence challenges. However, ethical, strategic, and operational considerations must be meticulously and responsibly navigated to harness AI&#8217;s potential effectively.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI in the future shall be used in decision-making processes for comprehensive, real-time analyses of complex data streams. Strategic planning and tactical decision-making using AI shall enable more informed and timely responses to dynamic operational environments. AI-driven tools can identify threats, track enemy movements, and predict potential outcomes of different strategic choices using satellite imagery and signals intelligence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Especially in the area of human performance, AI shall potentially revolutionize how soldiers train, fight, and even their recovery from any kind of injuries. With the use of wearable AI devices, the medical personnel will be able to monitor the health of the soldiers in real-time. AI powered exoskeletons can enhance physical abilities and provide physical protection thereby reducing the risk of injury.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the area of bio-defence, AI can detect and diagnose biological threats thereby facilitating rapid development of medical countermeasures. AI shall be able to model the spreading of potential infectious diseases to improve the containment measure and how we respond to the situation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the advancement of AI, the deployment of autonomous systems and unmanned vehicles shall play a significant role in defence sector. They shall be able to perform a range of tasks including surveillance and reconnaissance, logistics support and direct combat roles, hence reducing the risk to human life. However, considering the unethical uses of AI taking place, robust ethical guidelines and control mechanisms will need to be established for ensuring that the use of these systems aligns with international/ national law and norms. Fostering a culture of ethical AI research and development within the defence sector is critical to ensure that innovations enhance security without compromising ethical standards or global stability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d2af41f519e16a18253f81132cc77d48" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">5. What are the biggest challenges that defence personnel face in adapting to rapidly evolving warfare technologies?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the warfare technologies are rapidly evolving, the defence forces are compelled to confront unprecedented challenges, and adapting to these changes require a comprehensive and multifaceted approach on every aspect of military operations, right from strategic planning to soldier training. This evolution involves a substantial shift in the nature of warfare itself. The introduction of Cyber warfare, autonomous systems, and network-centric operations are some of the examples.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The primary challenges involve the blending of emerging technologies with existing military technologies. A deep understanding of the capabilities and limitations of new technologies is important for their effective use during battles. Having the most advanced technology is advantageous only when it is ensured that the technologies will enhance the overall effectiveness and responsiveness of military forces.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The advancements also effect strategic and tactical superiority further leading to an arms race in technological innovation. Investment in research and development by armed forces is crucial and anticipating future technological trends is also important. To foster a continuous flow of innovation and strategic insights, effective partnerships between industry, academia as well as allied nations is necessary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As warfare evolve, transformation of the battlefield brings a paradigm shift in military training, doctrine, and culture. Traditional training programs may not serve unforeseen complexities and dynamic, flexible training regimes involving digital literacy and adaptability must be considered. Evolving doctrine development incorporating the strategic and tactical implications of new technologies and ensuring that military operations leverage these advancements effectively becomes crucial.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By embracing change and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation, defence forces can navigate the challenges of modern warfare and secure a strategic advantage in an increasingly complex and dynamic global security environment. In Indian context, the threat perception for comprehensive national security which involves external aggression, internal security, economic security and environmental security, the emerging defence technologies like AI application, quantum , CBRN challenges, weaponization of space and cyber threats pose new threats to the army operations. With the minimal allocated budget for defence in terms of GDP as compared to the other developed nations bring the resource constraints to meet these emerging challenges. We need to plan strategies to address these in a pragmatic manner to strengthen our comprehensive national security.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b44081e300850a8c25017ba5030a05f" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">6. From your perspective, how well-prepared are global defence forces today for chemical and biological threats, and what improvements are needed?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Enhancing global defence forces&#8217; preparedness against chemical and biological threats is crucial and the need of the hour as they are dynamic in nature. At this pivotal juncture, a comprehensive overhaul of preparedness and response strategies against chemical and biological threats is important. The lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores the critical need for rapid response capabilities, advanced surveillance &amp; detection systems and robust international cooperation.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The establishment of international rapid response teams that are equipped with the necessary expertise, equipment, and medical countermeasures with minimal notice is required to manage and contain outbreaks. The availability and maintenance of vaccines, antivirals, antibiotics, and other essential medical supplies located globally strategically, can significantly reduce response times and save lives.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Availability of advanced surveillance and detection technologies for early identification of chemical and biological threats is crucial. The deployment of next-generation genomic sequencing, synthetic biology, environmental detection sensors, and AI-driven analytics to monitor and analyse pathogen data in real time are some of many technologies to be developed. Enhancing global bio-surveillance networks shall prove useful in providing a comprehensive picture of emerging threats through providing early warning and rapid response mechanisms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the advancement of science, biological/ chemical weapons can pose greater threats, the Investment in research and development for staying ahead has become crucial. The medical countermeasures supported by fundamental research on pathogen transmission, virulence, and resistance through collaborative research initiatives with academic institutions and biotechnology industries shall play a leading role through developing new diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even the process of discovery, development, and regulatory approval of vaccines and therapeutics should be streamlined. It shall enable rapid deployment during an outbreak. mRNA technology is an important area to be investigated as it offers quicker development of effective vaccines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The bio-surveillance capabilities need to improve globally to detect threats timely. Advancements in AI and machine learning shall play an important role in the analysis of data, identifying patterns and anomalies indicating the emergence of a chemical or biological threat.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations such as the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) need to be empowered for global surveillance and prevention of development of chemical weapons. Similarly Biological and Toxin Weapon Convention (BTWC) should be universally ratified and the United Nations should establish a similar body like OPCW which to a very large extent can stop many such events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-257e0b01f73c331cd2dbf0b7936f57c1" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">7. Can you discuss any efforts or initiatives you&#8217;re involved in to promote science education and awareness among the general public?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a distinguished Scientists and former Director General (Life Sciences) at Defence Research and Development Organization, Govt. of India followed by heading Amity’s Research and Innovation as President of Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation (ASTIF), my career has been dedicated to advancing the frontiers of science and technology, with a particular focus on fostering a deep connection between scientific research and societal welfare. My contributions have spanned various domains, including delivering key lectures, guiding researchers and scientists, member of multiple advisory councils significantly influencing science education and awareness.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a commitment to contribute immensely to make India Self-reliant in the area of Science and Technology and for the betterment of humanity globally, I have been promoting and propagating the scientific advancements and also making them accessible to the wider public. Through public engagements and lectures and special addresses, I have tried to bridge the gap between complex scientific research and its practical, everyday implications. My aim has always been to inspire a broader audience, especially young minds, to explore the wonders of science and consider careers in STEM fields.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In many of my positions in advisory roles, I have had the privilege of mentoring a diverse group of individuals &#8211; from budding scientists and faculty members to established researchers and even policy making. My focus has been on encouraging innovative thinking, ethical research practices, and a commitment to scientific excellence. These interactions have not only shaped the trajectory of scientific inquiry but have also ensured that research activities remain grounded in societal needs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perhaps one of my most significant contributions in this domain has been my involvement in the formulation of the Government of India&#8217;s Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) Policy. As the chair of the national advisory committee and national steering committee, I focused on the integration of science with social development, advocating for a model where scientific research and its benefits are seamlessly woven into the fabric of societal progress. This policy underscores the imperative for scientists and research institutions to engage actively with the community, promoting public understanding of science and its myriad contributions to humanity. One of the important aspects of SSR is Science Education (formal, non-formal, informal) including Science Communication to take the scientific outcomes to the grassroot level as well as to foster scientific temper among the general public. A paradigm shift in identifying thrust areas for scientific research from Lab to land to the new concept of Land to Lab and back to Land. National Education Policy 2020 also emphasizes quality science education and a strong societal connect of Academia with Society through outreach programmes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking ahead, I am committed to continuing my efforts to promote science education and awareness. The landscape of science and technology is ever evolving, and it is imperative that we keep pace with these changes, ensuring that the benefits of scientific research are universally accessible and contribute to the global good. My future endeavours will focus on enhancing international collaborations, fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity, and ensuring that science remains a key pillar of societal advancement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In conclusion, my journey in the realm of science and technology has been immensely rewarding contributing to the society at large. As we stand on the cusp of new scientific revolutions, I remain dedicated to ensuring that the torch of knowledge continues to burn bright, illuminating paths of discovery, innovation, and societal progress. As my endeavour of SSR, I keep giving popular Science Lectures in schools, colleges, even in rural areas and also through writing popular articles in Print Media as well as participating in TV interviews as well through social media. SSR will be a game changer if implemented in letter and spirit. <h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ed0455ae013da24e471ddbd5c8893861" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">8. What do you believe are the most pressing scientific questions or challenges that need to be addressed in the coming years?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though the advancements in technologies hold promising potential for the benefit of society, significant ethical, security, operational challenges and threats are posed along with it. The emerging technologies including synthetic biology, cybersecurity vulnerabilities in a hyper-connected world and human-machine teaming pose some of the most pressing challenges facing the global community today. Addressing these challenges necessitates a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach, intertwining technological innovation with robust ethical frameworks, strategic policy development, and sustained international cooperation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though with the advancement of the technology including groundbreaking opportunities for progress in healthcare, energy, and security through the realms of biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing, the ability of their use for harmful purposes is of great concern. It is important that the governance frameworks through international consensus on research norms, export controls, and the sharing of scientific knowledge be laid and implemented. The support from scientific community, policy makers, ethicists, and the public will play a deciding role to leverage the technological advances for the greater good while minimizing the risks of misuse.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Synthetic biology has the capacity to redesign organisms for specific purposes and promises revolutionary advances in medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection, however the deliberate misuse of these technologies may create harmful biological agents underscoring the need for stringent biosafety and biosecurity measures. Rigorous risk assessment methodologies need to be implemented and new biocontainment strategies be developed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The complexity and scale of cybersecurity challenges has increased with the proliferation of digital technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT). Protecting critical infrastructure, sensitive data, and personal information from cyber threats is essential and it requires multi-layered security strategy that encompasses technological solutions, human factors, and regulatory frameworks. Advanced encryption methods and AI-driven threat detection systems development is a necessity. Awareness programs on cybersecurity awareness should be conducted. In fact, the resilience of global cyber infrastructure should be enhanced.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the integrating AI, development of autonomous systems into everyday life and the workplace, including military and healthcare settings, the opportunities are infinite, but undermining human autonomy or decision-making also require focus on ethical AI development, transparency, and explainability. Ethics based training programs guiding human-AI interaction skills alongside research into the social and psychological aspects of human-machine collaboration, are essential for effective integration into society. Developing responsible research and innovation frameworks, enhancing public-private partnerships, and fostering a global dialogue are critical steps in ensuring that science and technology contribute only positively to humanity&#8217;s future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Besides the above areas of focus, we need to develop innovative technologies to address food security, health security, energy and environmental security. Precision agriculture, vertical farming, aeroponics, hydroponics, application of microbial technology for agricultural productivity, need-based agricultural engineering tools and innovative agri-business approach will strengthen our food security. Similarly, point of care diagnostics, digital &amp; mobile health, telemedicine, integrative medicine combining both allopathic and traditional systems of medicine for holistic healthcare, focus on cost-effective biomedical technologies will be priority areas in health security. Renewable energy sources, electric mobility, storage devices, fuel cell, nuclear power and cold fusion may address the challenges of energy security. Sustainability will be the forerunner in all developmental scientific endeavours.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-453d989a2e722622e26e6e164b8965b8" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">9. Could you share a pivotal moment or experience in your career that significantly redirected or influenced your research focus?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A paradigm shift through Look East policy brought a focus of Military operations on North Eastern Himalayas. Several new initiatives are being taken to develop suitable technologies for augmenting the operational efficiency. One such effort is the establishment of a joint Indo-Kyrgyz Mountain Biomedical research centre in Bishkek. Kargil war brought the need for technologies and strategies for rapid induction of troops to high altitude. Increasing terrorism and the capability existing for CBRN threat in the neighbourhood, a focus was given to develop CBRN Defence technologies. A mission mode programme on Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology application in Defence and several new innovative technologies and products are developed.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8e7cae6463d0ff5dc149fd829caf2910" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">10. In your view, how has the integration of emerging technologies like AI and biotechnology transformed research and practical applications in life sciences?<strong> </strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is indeed a transformative era of research and innovation especially in the field of Life Sciences. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and other emerging technologies into the life sciences and allied areas has accelerated the pace of discoveries and opened new frontiers naming them genetic engineering, neurotechnology, synthetic biology, and personalized medicine. The implications extend way beyond the laboratory and offer unprecedented opportunities to address some of humanity&#8217;s most pressing health challenges, improve quality of life, and extend human capabilities. However, these technologies also introduce a spectrum of ethical, social, and regulatory considerations that must be navigated with care to ensure that their benefits are realized ethically and equitably.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The advent of technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9 and other gene-editing technologies have revolutionized human’s ability to manipulate the genetic material. They have potential for treating genetic disorders and enhancing disease resistance. Neurotechnology including brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and neural implants promises restoring of lost sensory or motor functions and enhancing cognitive abilities. Synthetic biology&#8217;s ability to design and synthesize biological parts, devices, and systems presents opportunities for groundbreaking applications in medicine, agriculture, and environmental conservation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in life sciences shall bring a revolutionary shift through&nbsp; offering new insights into biological complexity, accelerating the pace of medical discoveries, and transforming healthcare delivery.AI algorithms are able to analyze vast datasets to identify potential drug candidates much faster than traditional methods. AI can predict the efficacy and safety profiles of compounds thereby significantly shortening the drug development timeline and reduced costs. It shall facilitate availability of new treatments for patients in the near future, offering hope for diseases that are currently difficult to treat. In the area of diagnostics and precision medicine, AI-driven tools are enhancing diagnostic accuracy to enable the early detection of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions. AI shall be able to provide tailored treatment plans to the individual patient depending on their genetic makeup and lifestyle to improve outcomes and minimizing adverse effects. In the area of patient care and management, AI powered virtual health assistants shall be able to provide personalized advice and support. The predictive analytics shall be able to forecast individual health risks and suggest preventive measures. AI powered machines at hospital premises shall contribute to the improvement of patient monitoring, optimized treatment protocols, and enhanced operational efficiency.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Amity University, advanced research on AI applications is being conducted which has found extensive use in the area of defence. In the area of surveillance especially for use by paramilitary and police forces as well as other law enforcement agencies, the team of researchers at Amity Institute of Space Science and Technology under the TDB (Technology Development Board) of DRDO have developed AI based recognition of the person using psychological parameters (gait and skeleton). It has occluded/ masked face recognition, group recognition and image/ video recognition detect a person with up to 95% accuracy. Through multidisciplinary approach combining AI with Biotechnology, the researcher at Amity Institute of Biotechnology have built a bioinformatics pipeline which combines reverse vaccinology tools, network biology system and text mining algorithms to analyses proteomes of pathogens and ranks proteins based upon their propensity to be an optimal vaccine candidate. Using, Long Short Term Memory Networks (LSTM) algorithm,&nbsp; 90% accuracy has been achieved. Amity Centre for Artificial intelligence in Noida, Uttar Pradesh which has the most advanced &amp; world&#8217;s best Supercomputing facilities. The highly qualified faculty members are working with focus in the latest areas of AI like Deep learning, Machine Learning, NLP, Data Science, GAN etc.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e5a682995971d253e3b9b63eaf78f762" style="color:#124969;font-size:25px">11. Based on your diverse experience, what would you advise for the younger professionals in the healthcare sector?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The emerging professionals in the healthcare sector should navigate the evolving landscape by developing a confluence of skills and perspectives that extend beyond traditional medical training. Advanced technologies integration into healthcare ranging from AI, genomics, telemedicine, personalized medicine have shown promise to transform patient care, diagnostics, and treatment modalities. The emerging healthcare professionals must adopt a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses technology, ethics, and patient-centric care to effectively contribute to a thriving dynamic environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They should stay abreast of technological advancements in healthcare. Familiarity with the technologies will help them improve outcomes, streamline operations, and enhance patient experiences. Continuous education and hands-on experience with technologies like electronic health records (EHRs), AI-driven diagnostic tools, and digital health platforms are crucial. They should understand the ethical frameworks that guide medical practice in the digital age.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The rapid pace of technological change requires healthcare professionals to be adaptable, with a commitment to lifelong learning. This includes pursuing continuing education opportunities, participating in professional development workshops, and staying engaged with the latest research and innovations in the field.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>In 2024, the world must not overlook eight critical crises: the escalating humanitarian situation in Gaza, the ongoing war in Ukraine, destruction in Syria from earthquakes, rampant gang violence in Haiti, Africa&#8217;s multifaceted crises including diseases and displacement, worsening conditions in Myanmar, extreme weather events like wildfires and floods, and the devastating impact of earthquakes globally. The EU remains committed to providing substantial humanitarian aid, emphasizing the urgent need for global attention and support across these diverse emergencies, which collectively challenge the international community to respond effectively to the growing demands for assistance and protection.</em></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2023, the EU and its Member States retained their position as one of the largest global humanitarian donors. Over the past 12 months the international community has focused on the rising number of people at risk around the world due to multiple converging emergencies: from health crises and natural hazards to conflicts like those in Ukraine and Gaza.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti this June or forced displacements such as the refugee crisis following conflict in Myanmar has continued to pose significant challenges for humanitarian aid – and emphasises the need to broaden humanitarian attention to other parts of the world. According to the latest UN figures, nearly 300 million people in 72 countries will require humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024. In the face of this challenge, the European Union remains resolute in its commitment to providing aid to people in need wherever they are.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This year, eight pivotal global crises demand close attention.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ca445aba3d1570b5d8101c5187e746c3" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Palestine: forced displacement and famine risk</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has sharply deteriorated in recent months. This is due to the intensification of hostilities after the terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October. The full-scale military operation, along with the siege on Gaza has taken the already dire humanitarian situation there to catastrophic levels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over 2 million people so far have been internally displaced due to intensified air strikes, enduring a situation of high insecurity and critical shortages of vital resources such as water, food, medicine, electricity, and fuel. The dramatically high death toll among civilians, the limited amount of humanitarian supplies and restricted humanitarian access makes this one of the crises that require urgent and continued assistance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2000, the EU has mobilised more than €1.08 billion to enhance the humanitarian response for Palestinians and has already earmarked €125 million in humanitarian aid for this crisis for 2024.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cdc627ccadb1b8fb6e31a4c80e972ee6" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Ukraine: lives in danger and infrastructure destroyed</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 heavy fighting has continued to endanger the lives of Ukrainian civilians, and cause severe damage to the country’s infrastructure: from housing to heating, water and electricity supplies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Internal displacement is also causing significant challenges, with citizens being evacuated away from the front lines to new, unfamiliar surroundings. Most of these people have already seen their homes destroyed by shelling and may have experienced various wartime traumas including armed violence, family separation, looting or eviction.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the war showing no sign of stopping, Ukraine’s civilian population continues to endure a humanitarian catastrophe that is reaching new levels of suffering with each passing day. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism is currently coordinating its largest ever operation in support of Ukraine. Since 2022 the EU has mobilised €785 million in humanitarian programs to help Ukrainians in need, and will continue to finance humanitarian aid efforts within the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e9266146c3c0f6c3e7b3dcc4fa3a624d" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Syria: Destruction and disease</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The earthquakes of February 2023 have brought destruction to Syria and increased the humanitarian needs of a country already hit by displacement, epidemics and a pandemic. The number of people in need has risen considerably over the past 12 months, reaching 15.3 million so far. The situation is especially bad in Northwest Syria, where the earthquake has deepened food insecurities, diseases and stable sources of water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a leading global donor of humanitarian assistance, the EU has mobilised more than €30 billion in humanitarian, development, economic and stabilisation assistance over the past 12 years to support Syrians both inside the country and across the region.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, 16 European countries have delivered support to humanitarian partners on the ground via Lebanon and Türkiye and have provided civilians with the essential supplies they need. Today, the crisis in Syria continues with close to 5.2 million registered Syrian refugees across the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5741c6f20aec599ab6fb71c09c5985b3" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Haiti: Expanding gang violence in an increasingly fragile country</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2024, humanitarian needs in Haiti continue to increase amidst unprecedented levels of gang violence. According to UN figures, at least 3,960 people have been killed, 1,432 injured and 2,951 kidnapped in gang related violence this year alone. 3,056 cases of rape were reported from January to October 2023, an increase of 49% compared to 2022. More than 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An announced mission led by Kenya to restore security in the country has not yet been deployed, while criminal gangs’ activities are expanding into urban and rural areas. Today more than 5 million Haitians need humanitarian assistance, and over 4.3 million are suffering acute food insecurity. The number of children suffering from severe malnutrition in 2023 increased by 30% compared to 2022, with more than 115,600 cases in 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This fragile context has forced millions of Haitian migrants to leave their country, making the perilous journey through the jungle of the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia in a bid to reach the United States. Later, some are affected by forced repatriation. Since 1994 the EU has allocated €490 million in humanitarian aid. Last year the EU gave €18.5 million to address the needs of Haiti’s most vulnerable communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4930747798e3a2f4ec3b5869d1e125b1" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Africa: diseases, disasters and displacement crises</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The continent of Africa remains high on the world media’s watchlist as the source of some of the worst crises of recent years. In Sudan, the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023 has resulted in one of the biggest displacement crises globally, with over 6 million people so far internally displaced due to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As of 2024, half of the population in Sudan – close to 25 million people – are in need of humanitarian aid. This is just one example of the unprecedented humanitarian needs in the region, and is affecting neighbouring countries including Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In areas like the Greater Horn of Africa, more than 49 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity and over 19 million people are displaced by conflict, drought, and flooding. Diseases also pose a threat to people across the region, including cholera outbreaks in four countries, measles and malaria outbreaks in seven countries, and dengue fever in Ethiopia.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The EU allocated €600,000 in order to contribute to tackle potential cholera outbreaks in South Sudan in 2023. €1 million was also allocated to Ethiopia to to help fight a cholera epidemic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1e40e674da109730a4032a383eb10d81" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Myanmar: Escalating conflict increases humanitarian needs</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the military takeover in 2021, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar has sadly deteriorated. Last autumn saw an escalation of the conflict, forcing more than 600,000 people to flee their homes in less than 3 months and reaching a total of 2.6 million across the country. Approximately a third of the country’s population, 18.6 million people, are currently in need of humanitarian assistance, and some 25% of the population are facing hunger.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some 600,000 stateless Rohingya remain in Myanmar, where they lack fundamental rights. Meanwhile, 1 million Rohingya refugees who fled persecution live in neighbouring Bangladesh. For this community conditions remain dire, with serious security concerns and no clear prospect for return to their home in Myanmar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2023, the EU allocated about €32.8 million to address the immediate needs of the most vulnerable civilians in Myanmar. In addition, last year the EU provided over €38.5 million in humanitarian aid, disaster preparedness and emergency funding within Bangladesh. Within this sum, over €28 million contributed to supporting Rohingya refugees.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As conditions in the refugee camps worsen, more and more Rohingya refugees embark on dangerous sea journeys to try and reach neighbouring countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. The EU has so far allocated €3 million to respond to the increasing protection needs of refugees throughout the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3fe95a92df63474edb1357b0f4b3faf8" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Extreme weather events: wildfires and floods</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Extreme weather events such as wildfires and floods are more becoming more frequent and extreme across the world due to the worsening climate crisis. On 6 August 2023, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism broke a grim record when for the first time it was activated twice within the same day, in response to flooding across two thirds of Slovenia and wildfires in Cyprus. 2023’s challenging wildfire season included the largest wildfire on record in the EU, burning over 76,000 hectares of land in Evros, Greece.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response the EU Civil Protection Mechanism deployed 27 firefighting airplanes, 1 helicopter, and around 2000 personnel. This massive effort was a testament to the solidarity of the EU member states; with Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden all contributing to the firefighting and relief efforts. This past year’s extreme wildfire season only highlights the increasing complexity of natural hazards and the simultaneity of extreme weather events across Europe and beyond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f78073dae10ba068039bb82867ce9740" style="color:#26668b;font-size:25px">Earthquakes</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2023 saw multiple earthquakes around the world. On 6 February 2023 Türkiye and Syria suffered a series of catastrophic earthquakes, resulting in thousands of deaths, extensive destruction and a worsening situation for many of the already vulnerable refugees in southeast Türkiye. This was one of the strongest earthquakes in the region in more than 100 years and the biggest earthquake of 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In September a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco, leaving many civilians injured or homeless. Then in October, a series of earthquakes in Afghanistan left thousands dead or injured. In response the EU allocated over €2.5 million in funding for humanitarian partners on the ground, as well as delivering vital supplies through 3 Humanitarian Air Bridge flights.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Finally</strong>, in November 2023, following a devastating earthquake in Nepal, the EU approved a €2 million aid package to bring relief to affected communities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>Amazon Pharmacy leverages generative AI to enhance its service by speeding up prescription processing, improving customer support, ensuring accurate medication stocking, and providing transparent pricing. Utilizing Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker, the technology helps interpret prescriptions, predict demand, and offer real-time pricing options without requiring insurance details. This AI-driven approach has notably increased order processing speed by 90% and reduced human errors. Moreover, it supports pharmacy staff with structured data and assists customers in making informed decisions, showcasing a transformative impact on healthcare delivery and customer experience.</em></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amazon Pharmacy is using generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) to fill prescriptions more quickly and accurately, make customer service faster and more helpful, and ensure the right quantities of medications are stocked for customers. Amazon Pharmacy is also working on AI applications that provide more transparent pricing on prescription medications, enabling customers to shop for the best price.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Today, Amazon is using generative AI to make the pharmacy experience even better for our clinical teams and customers,” said Alexandre Alves, senior principal engineer at Amazon Pharmacy. “We saw an opportunity to rethink information flows that was both exciting and transformational.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amazon Pharmacy is a full-service pharmacy in the Amazon.com store. Customers can use Amazon Pharmacy to purchase medications prescribed by their doctor and have them conveniently delivered to their door. Prime members enjoy free, two-day delivery and many ways to save, including the Prime prescription savings benefit and RxPass, which offers access to unlimited eligible prescription medications for only $5 per month. All Amazon Pharmacy customers have 24/7 access to a pharmacist to discuss questions about their medications.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the past year, Amazon Pharmacy has doubled the number of customers it serves, and AI is helping the team to efficiently scale. To power their generative AI capabilities, Alves and his team used multiple, pre-trained models from Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker. “By building our solutions on Amazon Web Services, our teams were able to move faster and focus on creating the best experience for customers,” said Alves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bbee30bea3d5e87b0a798de8202d5af6" style="color:#186089;font-size:25px">Improving processing speeds to get medications to customers faster</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alves has spent his entire career working as a computer scientist, using data and deep learning models to help streamline supply chains and predict customer demand. Now applying his expertise to health care, he said there is some truth to the cliche that doctors have bad handwriting—although today, in most cases, prescriptions are typewritten and arrive via an electronic scribe service used by clinical teams.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, digital prescriptions can still contain confusing or inconsistent language. “The data does not have a standard structure. For example, within a field labeled “directions,” we might find phrases such as “take by mouth,” or “take orally,” he said. “By making these directions more structured, we can scale our operations, fill prescriptions more quickly and efficiently, and importantly, reduce human error.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amazon solved this challenge by running the original “unstructured” data through a generative AI model. That model uses a process called “named entity recognition” to create a structure for the text, using categories such as “dose” and “frequency.” From there, it helps Amazon Pharmacy clinical staff fill prescriptions and provide clear instructions for patients.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every prescription is still reviewed by a pharmacist because provider guidance can be incorrect for reasons that AI cannot detect. Sometimes the prescriber will put “volume” in the field meant for “strength,” for example. But by combining a generative AI approach with the expertise of a pharmacist, Amazon is able to increase order processing speed by 90%, and, most importantly, reduce the rate of human error.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5a16a6d8d7e391d85ce9920386a25c3b" style="color:#186089;font-size:25px">Stocking the right medications</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drawing on his supply chain work, Alves and his team also use AI and machine learning (ML) to forecast demand. That helps Amazon stock the right medications in each location, ready to be dispensed when a prescription comes in.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Generative AI helps us synthesize data to experiment with different stocking scenarios. This can help us improve our ability to predict the medications we need to have available in each location,” Alves said. “Similarly, we have various canisters that we use to dispense medications, and AI can help us better determine which one is best for each medication.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e6aa2d116885951f4e947dfb07438dfa" style="color:#186089;font-size:25px">Helping customers find the best price</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amazon Pharmacy is using ML and generative AI with Large Language Models (LLMs) to offer real-time insurance estimates on prescription medications, without the customer needing to enter their insurance details. Customers can shop for the best price on medications by viewing a list of pricing options on Amazon Pharmacy’s site, this includes estimated insurance pricing as well as ways to save with the Prime prescription savings benefit, RxPass or automatic coupons.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Seeing the price of medications directly on a pharmacy’s website or mobile app is surprisingly novel,” Alves said. “LLMs can create immediate value for customers by surfacing up-to-date pricing, which enables better decision-making.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fec10fccfd37f93c00058dcaac117217" style="color:#186089;font-size:25px">Offering customers better support</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Generative AI can help the Amazon Pharmacy clinical and customer care team answer questions faster. It can review internal documentation pages and knowledge bases and then summarize them in a useful and clinically appropriate way. Amazon also augmented the process with guardrails that apply context to each question.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Of course, in pharmacy, accuracy and safety are extremely important. We use an additional model to validate the answer,” Alves said. “This model is independent from the others and is trained by feedback from our staff. Our clinical and customer service representatives review everything before they speak with the customer.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d017c69b0432209ec5ecd0a8433bd4c8" style="color:#186089;font-size:25px">Delivering medications more efficiently</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alves said that there’s always a balance between doing a task immediately and waiting until the work can be done in a batch. “By improving our ability to ingest data and interpret context, generative AI can help us improve these predictions and batching decisions, and help customers get their prescriptions more quickly,” he said. “If you don’t need a refill for a month, that request can probably wait until we can batch it. If you need a medication urgently, we’re going to bump it to the front of the line.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alves added, “We are constantly discovering new uses for generative AI. We’re excited about the potential to not only further improve the customer experience with Amazon Pharmacy, but also to significantly enhance the roles of our pharmacy staff, helping to create better health care outcomes.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued comprehensive guidelines for the ethical use and governance of Large Multi-Modal Models (LMM) in healthcare. These advanced generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Bert, have rapidly transformed healthcare delivery and medical research by processing diverse data inputs like text, videos, and images. Despite their potential benefits, WHO emphasizes the critical need to carefully evaluate the risks associated with LMM adoption.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:25px"><strong>Applications of LMMs in Healthcare</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The WHO document identifies five key applications of LMMs in healthcare, including diagnosis and clinical care, patient-guided use, administrative tasks, medical education, and scientific research. However, risks such as the generation of false or biased statements and issues related to data quality and bias are noted.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:25px"><strong>Recommendations and Concerns</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHO urges a collaborative approach involving governments, technology companies, healthcare providers, patients, and civil society in all stages of LMM development. Key recommendations include investing in public infrastructure, using regulations to ensure ethical obligations, and introducing mandatory post-release audits. The organization also stresses the importance of global cooperation to effectively regulate AI technologies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:25px"><strong>Ethical Principles and Governance</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHO’s guidance builds upon six core principles: protecting autonomy, promoting human well-being, ensuring transparency, fostering responsibility, ensuring inclusiveness and equity, and promoting responsive and sustainable AI. The guidelines highlight the necessity of ethical considerations and governance in AI for health, addressing concerns such as biased data, misleading information, and potential misuse of LMMs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>Ahead of India&#8217;s interim budget for 2024, industry experts call for increased government investment in healthcare, research and development, and pharmaceutical innovation. Emphasizing the need for regulatory reforms, enhanced healthcare funding, and support for the &#8216;Make in India&#8217; initiative, leaders from pharma and healthcare sectors, including Vibcare Pharma, Healthium Medtech, Beagle Lasers, and Apollo Hospitals, highlight the opportunity to advance India&#8217;s role as a global healthcare hub. They advocate for collaborative efforts, local manufacturing support, and digital healthcare expansion to improve accessibility and quality of care across the country, aiming to propel the industry&#8217;s growth from $50 billion to $450 billion by 2047.</em></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Government of India needs to allocate more funds for research and development, healthcare funding, and innovation in pharmaceuticals in health sectors, the industry experts expect from the interim budget 2024 that is scheduled to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The budget&#8217;s emphasis on research and development offers us an exceptional chance to innovate. We hope to see increased government backing in areas vital to us, such as regulatory reforms and more healthcare funding,&#8221; said Vibcare Pharma CEO Siddharth Singhal.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said government support is crucial for the pharma and healthcare sector to address the dynamic healthcare needs of India.  “By focusing on advanced R&amp;D, we aim to introduce better and more cost-effective medicines. This budget&#8217;s healthcare focus aligns with our mission, promising growth opportunities and reinforcing our dedication to providing accessible healthcare solutions,&#8221; the pharma industry expert said. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The forthcoming budget presents a transformative opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry to excel in innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness, further strengthening India&#8217;s position as a pharmacy of the world,&#8221; Singhal added.  The industry&#8217;s current valuation is approximately $50 billion, with growth targets of $120 billion to $130 billion by 2030 and $450 billion by 2047, as per government estimates. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India continues to enhance its position and seize the opportunity to become a global hub for the medtech sector,the industry is poised to witness continued expansion, growth, investment opportunities, and technological innovation during FY 2024-25, said Healthium Medtech CEO and MD Anish Bafna.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He called for a collaborative action plan involving public-private partnerships between the government, medical device companies, hospitals, manufacturers and suppliers, healthcare providers, and insurance players, which continues to be the need of the hour.  In addition, conducive policies will back the industry, encourage the spur in local manufacturing, and allow new medical devices to reach patients faster, benefiting patients and healthcare providers, Bafna said. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Healthium Medtech CEO also stated that the healthcare industry will look forward collectively to a phased-out approach on custom duties, facilitation of single window clearances for local manufacturers, and increase in export incentives under RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products Scheme) along with broadening the scopes of schemes like PLI.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, Beagle Lasers founder Dr Joy Shah emphasized that the major focus of the budget 2024&nbsp; may be to strengthen the availability of quality healthcare to even rural areas of India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Import may be discouraged. We are expecting some changes in the GST tariff and services covered under healthcare. There may be a strengthening of import regulations to reduce the influx of imported medical equipment,&#8221; he said.  &#8220;This budget may create a conducive environment for local manufacturers to thrive and contribute to the &#8220;Make in India&#8221; initiative, boost employment opportunities, and enhance the quality of healthcare services,&#8221; Dr Shah added. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Dr. Harshit Jain, Founder &amp; Global CEO of Doceree said: &#8220;We anticipate government&#8217;s continued commitment towards the initiative and look forward to a heightened focus on the robust implementation of this scheme in the upcoming fiscal year, fostering transparency in the healthcare ecosystem and accelerating advancements in treatment outcomes. We also expect a forward-looking approach from the government, emphasizing on allocating funds to enhance technology-powered innovative healthcare models tailored for India&#8217;s diverse population.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Union Budget 2024-25 is scheduled for February 1, with general elections looming on the horizon, this budget promises to be a delicate balancing act between fiscal prudence and populist measures. VarcoLeg Care CEO Veeky Ganguly stated the healthcare industry is anticipating policy measures that simplify the adoption of health technologies. “Streamlined regulatory processes and incentives for healthcare providers to embrace digital solutions would not only benefit our business but also contribute to a more patient-centric healthcare approach.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We&#8217;re optimistic about a commitment to skill development in the healthcare sector. A well-trained workforce capable of harnessing the potential of emerging technologies is crucial for our collective progress,&#8221; he said.  “We hope to see increased funding to boost the manufacturing of medical equipment domestically, fostering the &#8216;Make in India&#8217; initiative and supporting local manufacturers,&#8221; said Vikram Thaploo, CEO- Telehealth, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said that Apollo Hospitals&#8217; Telehealth is looking forward to potential changes in GST tariffs and services covered under healthcare, expecting measures to strengthen import regulations and create an environment conducive to the growth of indigenous manufacturers.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We expect that the budget will prioritize investments in public health infrastructure, primary healthcare facilities, and essential medicines, while promoting telemedicine and digital healthcare solutions. We urge the government to consider expanding Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes to cover the development of supporting hardware for advanced digital technologies like Generative AI,&#8221; he added.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>In 2023, Bangladesh faced its deadliest dengue outbreak, with over 321,000 cases and 1,705 deaths, significantly up from the previous year. The surge in cases overwhelmed healthcare facilities, with children under ten, especially those under five, being highly vulnerable due to underdeveloped immune systems. The outbreak&#8217;s severity is attributed to climate change, leading to higher mosquito populations. Despite efforts to combat the disease, including repurposing hospitals and increasing medical supplies, the spread of dengue has reached unprecedented levels, affecting all districts and placing additional burdens on the urban poor.</em></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a small, dimly lit control room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Dhaka, data on Bangladesh’s dengue outbreak flashes across multiple computer screens. Government analysts here have been busy collecting and monitoring the impact of the disease across the country since cases were first reported last April.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2023, the total reported cases of dengue numbered 321,179, with 1,705 deaths recorded, a massive jump from the year before, when 62,000 people were known to have had the virus, and 281 died. It was the highest number of annual deaths caused by the mosquito-transmitted disease ever recorded in Bangladesh.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The deaths last year included at least 113 children. According to Save the Children, the majority of these deaths were of children under the age of 10, with 38 deaths among those under five. “Children make up around 30% of all dengue cases in Bangladesh and are particularly vulnerable to the virus because of underdeveloped immune systems,” says Dr Shamim Jahan, Bangladesh director of Save the Children. “Those under five are particularly at risk from developing severe symptoms, such as dehydration and shock.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the past few months, the surge in cases has pushed Bangladesh’s health system to the limit, with hospital corridors overflowing with patients as wards run out of beds. “It’s been the deadliest outbreak of dengue the country has ever seen,” says Dr Mohammad Shafiul Alam, a scientist at the ICDDR,B health research centre in Dhaka. The high death toll has continued into the new year. As of Wednesday, the outbreak had affected 756 people so far this month, resulting in 10 deaths, compared with 424 cases and three deaths this time last year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the official figures may not give a true indication of the scale of the outbreak. “These reported figures are likely an underestimation of the actual burden,” says Alam. “Numerous healthcare facilities in Bangladesh operate beyond the reporting framework. This underscores the likelihood that the actual figures could be several times higher.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dengue cases have risen dramatically around the world, with 70% of them occurring in Asia. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 3.9 billion people – or half of the world’s population – are at risk of infection. Half a million cases were reported in 2000, compared with 4.2 million in 2022: nearly an eight-fold increase.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The increasing frequency of extreme weather events is fuelling the spread of the disease into new locations and extending dengue seasons in countries where the disease is already present. In Bangladesh, unusually high rainfall, combined with hotter temperatures and high humidity, has resulted in an increased mosquito population throughout the country. “Climate change is the critical link to the increase in numbers that we’re seeing,” says Alam.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Mirpur, a district of north-east Dhaka, Masuma Begum watches over her nine-month-old daughter Sohana, who has contracted dengue and lies asleep beneath a fan. “She no longer has the strength to get up and play,” says Begum. “It’s been over four weeks and she still hasn’t got any better.” Outside their house, an open drain and yard overgrown with weeds create a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We can’t afford to admit her to hospital so I’ve been doing whatever I can to protect her at home,” says an exhausted Begum, who has not left her daughter’s side since she fell ill. “I’ve been using repellent and mosquito spray to keep the bloodsuckers at bay – but they still manage to get inside.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bangladesh has seen regular outbreaks of dengue over the past two decades. Yet the recent outbreak has been surprising – not only did a surge in cases start earlier than usual (typically cases start during the June-October monsoon), but the disease has also spread beyond its previous concentration in Dhaka and Chattogram (or Chittagong, as it is better known). “In 2022, Dhaka city accounted for 63% of cases, while in 2023, 66% were reported outside Dhaka,” says Alam. “Now dengue is being reported from all 64 districts of the country.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response, the DGHS has repurposed six hospitals in Dhaka assigned for Covid-19 patients to manage the dengue epidemic, and increased the supply of intravenous saline and other medication across the country. For many of Bangladesh’s urban poor, the cost of contracting dengue has added to the burdens on their households.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Meet Arnav</strong>, a 35-year-old consultant in Delhi who constantly juggles board meetings, client demands, and family responsibilities. One morning, during his office commute, a slight exchange of glares with another commuter in the chaotic traffic transforms into a road rage incident with both yelling and exchanging blows. The passerby passes judgment and blames the two for being impatient, aggressive, and losing control. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then there is <strong>Sakshi</strong>, a 19-year-old young adult. Her heartache following a breakup sends ripples through her life. Struggling to come to terms with the abrupt end of a loving relationship, she turns to cigarettes and alcohol to numb the pain. She misses school and her dance classes and distances herself from friends. Her friends blame her for “bad” choices and wonder why she can just not pick herself up.   </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the digital age, we encounter <strong>Dhruv</strong>, a 12-year-old who is inseparable from his screens. Given the many studies pointing to a correlation between screen usage and depression and anxiety, his parents worry about him. They blame him for his lack of self-control and addiction to screens. This leads to daily arguments and an unpeaceful environment at home.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we read the stories of <strong>Arnav, Sakshi and Dhru</strong>v, the question of blame appears. Are they solely to be blamed for their behavior, or is it a collective responsibility.  It is true that individual choices play a role – but social factors also significantly affect an individual&#8217;s mental health.  For Arnav, the environment in which he functions plays an important role-long commutes, poor road and parking infrastructure, and chaotic traffic also contribute to his stress and frustration. These external stressors in a fast-paced lifestyle can escalate into emotional and physical outbursts.  The absence of mental health education in schools, in addition to the stigma and taboo around mental health, leaves young minds unequipped to navigate their emotional landscapes. Sakshi&#8217;s story shows us the consequences of this gap, as her resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms comes from a lack of awareness and availability of healthier alternatives like communicating with a trusted one or creative expression. Similarly, in Dhruv&#8217;s case, the ever-enticing algorithms of addictive digital platforms and lack of outdoor play areas worsen his screen addiction. The lack of regulation and tools to manage his screen time keeps him glued to the screen. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These stories&nbsp;are not rare occurrences. According to the World Health Organisation, one in every eight people lives with a mental disorder. Estimates suggest that over 20 crore Indians suffer from mental disorders. The contribution of mental disorders to total DALYs in India doubled from 1990 to 2017 and is expected to increase further.&nbsp;Research highlights that these conditions are caused by a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, social, economic, and neurological factors.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In hindsight it would be incorrect to blame an individual for their poor mental health. We must view this as a collective and system responsibility. There are tangible examples of collective responsibility that show how we can create societal engagement in shaping mental well-being. In education, Finnish schools and daycares take a proactive stance with their <strong>“Let&#8217;s Talk about Children”</strong> program. It encourages parents and children to improve their bonds and communication. By teaching students about healthy coping mechanisms during stressful situations like break-ups and loss it empowers them with the emotional tools to navigate challenging experiences. The program has shown positive results in the betterment of children&#8217;s mental health. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking beyond the classroom, <strong>South Korea</strong> passed the <strong>‘Cinderella Law’</strong> to stop children under 16 from playing video games between midnight and 6 A.M. The law was grounded in recognizing the potential adverse effects of prolonged gaming sessions, including disrupted sleep patterns, decreased physical activity, and compromised academic performance. The law&#8217;s introduction reflects a societal acknowledgement of the effects of digital interactions on mental health, pushing us to consider how regulations can create favorable situations for improving mental well-being. </p>



<h2 class="Body" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; color: #2b322f; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.7;"><strong><em>In light of the narratives and insights unveiled, we see that the intricacies of mental health challenges cannot be assigned to a solitary source of blame. That would be oversimplifying the issue.</em></strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similarly, initiatives in New Zealand show us how mental wellness can be achieved through strategic policies. Their focus lies on reducing substance abuse and dependence to increase mental health. Notably, the nation&#8217;s endeavor to be smoke-free by 2025 involves restricting sales to the younger generation so that the children in these communities never start smoking, thus creating a new generation of non-smokers. They provide de-addiction support for smokers, sell only low-tobacco products to decrease tobacco dependence and make cigarettes difficult to buy by restricting the number of shops allowed to sell them. These policies are a testament to a comprehensive commitment that extends beyond physical health, recognizing the link between addictive substances and mental well-being. &nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India, too, has started to take steps towards nurturing the well-being of its youth. An example is the implementation of the Happiness Course by the Delhi government in 2018, aimed at fostering happiness and holistic development among students.&nbsp; Students are taught skills like meditation, yoga, self-compassion and social connections to understand how to create and maintain good mental health.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we contemplate these examples, thought-provoking questions arise from the stories of Arnav, Dhruv, and Sakshi. Could interventions like the Finnish &#8220;Let&#8217;s Talk about Children&#8221; program have provided Sakshi with healthier coping mechanisms for her heartbreak or helped Arnav learn how to manage anger at an early age? To what extent did the absence of comprehensive screen usage guidelines and tools lead to Dhruv&#8217;s struggle with screen addiction? Could support tools, regulations, and guidelines have helped him regulate his behavior? &nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In light of the narratives and insights unveiled, we see that the intricacies of mental health challenges cannot be assigned to a solitary source of blame. That would be oversimplifying the issue. It is not a question of assigning fault but recognizing that a multifaceted approach is essential. Individuals can play their part through actions like meditation, self-control, accessing professional help and using mindfulness techniques. In addition, we must focus on a collective understanding—one that acknowledges the interplay of genetics, environment, social, economic, health systems, and personal choices. As we navigate the complex chords of mental health, we need collective responsibility that goes beyond individual blame and involves all stakeholders to cherish, uphold and nurture mental well-being.&nbsp;</p>
