<p><strong><em>Google Cloud is expanding its use of artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare through a service called Enterprise Search on Generative AI App Builder, currently being tested by Mayo Clinic. This tool allows healthcare professionals to rapidly access patient information from disparate data sources using chatbot-like technology. The service aims to save time, prevent physician burnout, and reduce administrative tasks. However, Google Cloud is taking a cautious approach, prioritizing safety over speed, especially given the healthcare sector&#8217;s strict requirements for accurate information.</em></strong></p>



<p>Google’s cloud business is expanding its use of new artificial intelligence technologies in health care, giving medical professionals at Mayo Clinic the ability to quickly find patient information using the types of tools powering the latest chatbots. On Wednesday, Google Cloud said Mayo Clinic is testing a new service called Enterprise Search on Generative AI App Builder, which was introduced Tuesday. The tool effectively lets clients create their own chatbots using Google’s technology to scour mounds of disparate internal data.</p>



<p>In health care, that means workers can interpret data such as a patient’s medical history, imaging records, genomics or labs more quickly and with a simple query, even if the information is stored across different formats and locations. Mayo Clinic, one of the top hospital systems in the U.S. with dozens of locations, is an early adopter of the technology for Google, which is trying to bolster the use of generative AI in the medical system.</p>



<p>Mayo Clinic will test out different use cases for the search tool in the coming months, and Vish Anantraman, chief technology officer at Mayo Clinic, said it has already been “very fulfilling” for helping clinicians with administrative tasks that often contribute to burnout.</p>



<p>For instance, if a physician needs to see information about a cohort of female patients aged 45 through 55, including their mammograms and medical charts, they can enter that query into the search tool instead of seeking out each element separately. Similarly, if a physician needs to know which clinical trials a patient may match, they can search for that, too.</p>



<p>“It’s going to save a lot of time, it’s going to prevent physician burnout, it’s going to reduce administrative overload,” Anantraman told CNBC in an interview. Generative AI has been the hottest topic in tech since late 2022, when Microsoft-backed Open AI released the chatbot ChatGPT to the public. Google raced to catch up, rolling out its Bard AI chat service earlier this year and pushing to embed the underlying technology into as many products as possible. Health care is a particularly challenging industry, because there’s less room for incorrect answers or hallucinations, which occur when AI models fabricate information entirely.</p>



<p>Aashima Gupta, global director of health care strategy and solutions at Google Cloud, said Google is taking a “safety over speed” approach with its Enterprise Search tool, which is why the company has limited it to select early adopters like Mayo Clinic instead of rolling it out more broadly. “We want to be very thoughtful and responsible in how we leverage such a powerful tool like generative AI in an enterprise setting, especially in health care,” Gupta told CNBC in an interview. Google said its approach to privacy ensures customers retain control over their data and noted the new service is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).</p>



<p>Anantraman said Mayo Clinic has created “safe sandboxes” for workers to test applications of the technology and identify where it can be the most helpful. “We take privacy of patient data very, very seriously, and our needs of our patients come first,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons health care has to be very cautious in general as an industry in adopting technology that may not be fully tested, may not be fully vetted.”</p>



<p>Google Cloud and Mayo Clinic signed a 10-year partnership in 2019. Mayo said at the time it selected Google Cloud to be the “cornerstone of its digital transformation.” The partnership announced Wednesday is the first step in an expanded agreement between the two companies to work together on AI applications in health care.</p>

<p>Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday called on the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to take action to ensure seniors can actually afford the expensive Alzheimer’s treatment Leqembi. Sanders, who chairs the Senate Health Committee, in a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra called the $26,500 annual price tag for Leqembi set by drugmakers Eisai and Biogen “unconscionable.”</p>



<p>The Vermont independent said the drug’s current cost would put a substantial financial burden on Medicare and increase premiums for seniors. Medicare is the federal program that provides health coverage to primarily older Americans. Sanders said the “outrageously high price” of Leqembi “will prevent seniors who need this drug from receiving treatment.”</p>



<p>The lawmaker wrote that HHS should use its authority to break Leqembi’s patent monopoly if Eisai and Biogen refuse to lower the treatment’s price. He also said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services could also limit how much it pays for Leqembi to reflect the drug’s actual benefit. Most Medicare patients suffering from Alzheimer’s would not be able to afford the 20% co-payment of more than $5,000 a year for Leqembi, Sanders said. The co-pay for the drug represents a sixth of the $30,000 median income of Medicare beneficiaries, he said.</p>



<p>“That would clearly not just be unaffordable to many seniors it would be an absurd and unfair government policy,” wrote Sanders, a democratic socialist who caucuses with the Democratic majority in the Senate. Co-payments, along with coinsurance and deductibles, are medication and health services costs that patients must personally pay for out of pocket, as opposed to being covered by their health insurance.</p>



<p>Sanders, in his letter, told Becerra, “Mr. Secretary: As you well know, a prescription drug is not effective if a patient who needs that drug cannot afford to take it.” The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a nonprofit organization, has estimated that Leqembi should be sold for $8,900 to $21,500 per year, significantly less than Eisai’s list price.</p>



<p>But Eisai has said its $26,500 annual list price for Leqembi is lower than the company’s estimate of the $37,600 total value of the drug for each patient. Eisai developed Leqembi and conducted clinical trial of the drug, which is being manufactured by Biogen. Medicare plans to cover Leqembi if the Food and Drug Administration approves the treatment.</p>



<p>CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSur last week said that Medicare will cover Leqembi on the same day the treatment receives the greenlight from FDA. The FDA is expected to make a decision by July 6 on whether to approve Leqembi. The FDA’s panel of independent advisors is scheduled to meet Friday to vote on whether data from a clinical trial support Leqembi’s clinical benefit to patients.</p>



<p>The FDA is not obligated to follow the advice of its advisors. But a positive vote from the expert panel would weigh in favor of the drug’s approval. Medicare, which operates independently from the FDA, decides whether to cover the cost of a drug based on its own determination of whether a treatment is “reasonable and necessary” for patients. Sanders in his letter said that at its current cost, Leqembi “will undermine the finances of Medicare.”</p>



<p>“And it will increase the premiums of over 60 million seniors who receive Medicare whether they need to take this drug or not,” Sanders wrote. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, a leading medical journal, found that Leqembi could cost Medicare $5 billion per year. And individual Medicare patients could face annual out-of-pocket costs for the drug of $6,600 depending on the state they live in, and whether they have supplemental insurance, the study found.</p>



<p>Leqembi received accelerated approval from the FDA in January. But Medicare severely limits coverage of Alzheimer’s antibody drugs that are cleared under that expedited pathway. That Medicare policy was put into effect after the controversial approval of another Alzheimer’s antibody drug made by Biogen and Eisai called Aduhelm.</p>



<p>The FDA expedited the approval Aduhelm in June 2021 even though the agency’s independent advisors said the drug did not demonstrate a clinical benefit to patients. Three of the FDA’s independent advisors resigned over the agency’s decision. A congressional investigation subsequently found the approval was “rife with irregularities.” The companies priced Aduhelm at $56,000 per year. Sanders, in his letter Wednesday, said the “FDA has a special responsibility to restore the public trust after its inappropriate relationship with Biogen during the agency’s review of a prior Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm.”</p>

<p><strong><em>The 76th WHO health assembly addressed a variety of health topics, approved a budget increase for 2024-25, and acknowledged progress on the Global Health and Peace Initiative. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO&#8217;s Director-General, recognized increased contributions and the upcoming high-level meetings on health issues as monumental. The assembly also heard from former WHO staff member Gwen Carnelley, celebrating her 100th birthday this year. The Executive Board will discuss the assembly&#8217;s outcomes in its 153rd meeting.</em></strong></p>



<p>WHO’s 76th health assembly closed today, having addressed a vast array of issues, including behavioural sciences; best buys for non-communicable diseases; diagnostics; disabilities; drowning prevention; emergency, critical and operative care; food micronutrients; indigenous health; infection prevention and control; maternal and child health; medical oxygen; primary health care; refugee and migrant health; rehabilitation; traditional medicine, and WHO’s work in responding to dozens of emergencies while working with Member States to be better prepared to face new ones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Earlier in the day, delegates in Committee A agreed to note the roadmap towards the Global Health and Peace Initiative (along with a slight change in name from “Global Health for Peace Initiative”), and requested that the Director-General report on progress in strengthening the roadmap.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In plenary, as the final approval step of the assembly, delegates adopted the resolutions and decisions of the two committees, and adopted their reports. This included approval of the budget for 2024-25, and a 20% increase in assessed contributions. The committee chairs and representatives from two regions spoke to recognize the work and progress of this Assembly.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In his closing remarks, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s Director-General, noted that “the increase in assessed contributions and the investment round are historic and a huge milestone.” He spoke about the year ahead, with high-level meetings on universal health coverage, tuberculosis and pandemic preparedness and response at this year’s UN General Assembly. He pointed to the continuing negotiations on the pandemic accord and amendments to the International Health Regulations as unprecedented—“generational”—opportunities to learn from the mistakes of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure they are not repeated.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Delegates also had the chance to hear from former WHO staff Gwen Carnelley, who turned 100 this year, who began working with WHO in 1949, just a year after WHO was founded 75 years ago.</p>

The policy sets a roadmap for India to gain a 10-12% share in the global market over 25 years by focusing on regulatory mechanisms, infrastructure development, research and investment, human resource development, and market positioning. Key initiatives include a &#8220;Single Window Clearance System&#8221; for licensing, fostering academic-industry collaboration, promoting investment, establishing medical device parks, and developing a skilled workforce. The policy aims to improve India&#8217;s healthcare landscape and make quality healthcare products accessible.</em></strong></p>



<p>India, with its ambitious National Medical Device Policy 2023, is poised to become a global leader in the manufacturing and innovation of medical devices. This forward-thinking policy sets out a comprehensive roadmap to achieve a 10-12% share in the expanding global market over the next 25 years. This mechanism will streamline the regulatory process, preventing duplication of work and reducing compliance burdens. By aligning the pricing regulation framework with the provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013, through the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the policy ensures affordable access to high-quality healthcare products for all.</p>

It advocates the creation of a resolute export promotion council to address market access issues. By promoting awareness of medical device safety standards and communicating the value proposition to the public, the policy seeks to build trust and confidence in domestically manufactured medical devices. It also encourages learning from successful manufacturing and skilling systems around the world and exploring the possibility of implementing similar models in India.</p>



<p>To ensure effective implementation and monitoring, the policy envisions close coordination with NITI Aayog. Quantitative metrics will be developed to assess equitable access to affordable medical devices, manufacturing independence, improvement in the healthcare index, reduced disease burden, and the creation of high-value jobs. Regular monitoring of economic indicators, such as exports, export volumes, and foreign direct investments, will provide insights into the sector’s growth and performance.</p>



<p>The National Medical Device Policy 2023 lays the groundwork for India’s transformation into a global hub for medical device manufacturing and innovation. By prioritizing regulatory efficiency, infrastructure development, research and development, investment, human resource development, and positioning, the policy demonstrates India’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring access to affordable, high-quality medical devices. Given our increasing understanding of the importance of circadian rhythms in maintaining physical and mental health, it&#8217;s crucial to design AI systems that can harmonize with these natural cycles, providing better personalization and efficiency.</p>



<p>AI&#8217;s capacity to learn, predict, and adapt makes it uniquely suited to interact with our biological clocks. With AI&#8217;s help, we can develop personalized systems for healthcare, productivity, and wellness, which operate in tandem with our internal rhythms, enhancing our lives rather than disrupting them.</p>



<p>In the healthcare domain, AI can play a pivotal role. The idea of chronotherapy, administering medication in alignment with the body&#8217;s circadian rhythms to maximize efficacy and minimize side effects, could benefit greatly from AI.
