At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, Captain Dr. Indira Rani—an esteemed healthcare leader with over 35 years of experience—joined host Mercilina to delve into how India’s nursing workforce is adapting to the rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Dr. Rani, who holds a Doctorate in Health Economics and currently serves as the Chief Nursing Officer at Max Healthcare, brings a unique blend of clinical, academic, and administrative expertise to this transformative discussion.

Technology Meets Compassion in Nursing

Dr. Rani emphasized that while today’s novice nurses entering hospitals are often tech-savvy, their digital fluency is typically limited to smartphones and general-purpose devices—not specialized healthcare technologies.

“In private and government nursing colleges, simulation labs and smart boards are slowly becoming more common,” she said. “But it will still take time before our nursing academics are fully tech-integrated.”

Yet, she stressed an important point: nursing is a human-touch profession. “Technology should enhance, not replace, the essence of nursing—which is care,” she explained.

To strike this balance, Max Healthcare has instituted a rigorous 40-day tech upskilling program for incoming nurses. This training ensures that nurses can confidently use clinical devices and digital platforms while preserving compassionate, patient-centered care.

A Curriculum That Needs to Catch Up

Turning to the educational framework, Dr. Rani shared her concerns regarding India’s nursing curriculum.

Although the Indian Nursing Council (INC) recently introduced a semester-based structure to include modern technology, she noted that AI is still not sufficiently integrated. “When the curriculum was designed, AI hadn’t yet reached its current boom. Today, with robotics and digital platforms entering operation theaters, we need to catch up,” she remarked.

Dr. Rani called for urgent curriculum reforms to incorporate AI, data literacy, and healthcare innovation, ensuring future nurses are not just reactive users but confident co-navigators of evolving healthcare systems.

AI as an Ally, Not a Threat

Contrary to the common fear that AI might replace human roles, Dr. Rani offered a more optimistic perspective.

“Nurses won’t be replaced by AI. Rather, AI will help reduce their burden and improve efficiency,” she said. From managing non-clinical tasks like monitoring IV drips or responding to patient call bells, to preventing documentation errors or ensuring infection control, AI can automate routine duties, giving nurses more time to focus on meaningful patient interactions.

“In the next two to three years, we’ll see a full merge of AI into bedside nursing,” she predicted, emphasizing the need for nurses to learn how to ‘prompt’ AI tools effectively, just like surgeons adapt to robotic assistance in complex procedures.

The Line Between Tech and True AI

Dr. Rani clarified a common misconception: not all hospital technology is AI. For example, intensive care units already use technological tools like hemodynamic monitors, which raise alarms during vital sign drops. However, true AI goes further, aiding in diagnosis, lab analysis, and real-time surgical decisions.

She cited a recent case where AI alerted a neurosurgeon within seconds that a small tumor fragment was still left in the cranium—a reminder of how powerful AI can be in improving patient outcomes when used wisely.

Final Thoughts

While AI is just beginning to enter Indian hospitals, especially at the bedside, leaders like Dr. Indira Rani are already preparing the next generation of nurses to embrace it—not as a replacement, but as a partner in care.

“AI will never take away the human touch,” she concluded. “But when used thoughtfully, it will enhance care, reduce stress, and lead to better patient outcomes.”

At InnoHEALTH 2024, host Ursina welcomed a distinguished voice in nursing education—Dr. Ramindra Kalra, Principal of Holy Family College of Nursing, and a veteran with 39 years of experience as a nurse educator. As the Founder Principal of the college, Dr. Kalra brought a powerful message to the table: while AI and digital technologies are transforming healthcare, the essence of nursing—compassion and human touch—must remain non-negotiable.

Nursing Curriculum in the Digital Age

Addressing whether nursing education is ready for AI, Dr. Kalra noted that India has already updated its nursing curriculum to include digitization, computer literacy, and even AI-related electives. “The first batch under the new curriculum will graduate in 2025–2026,” she said, adding that while students are becoming increasingly tech-savvy, faculty training is a crucial missing piece.

She also raised a modern challenge: the rise of generative tools like ChatGPT. While acknowledging its utility, Dr. Kalra emphasized the importance of critical thinking and originality, which are at risk if students overly rely on AI for academic assignments.

Hands-On Training Meets Digital Transformation

One of the strengths of India’s nursing education, according to Dr. Kalra, is the early and extensive exposure to clinical practice. Unlike some Western institutions where students begin hospital work only during internships, Indian nursing students are in clinical settings from the very first year. At Holy Family Hospital—a COVID-care facility—students and faculty worked at the patient bedside throughout the pandemic, ensuring that compassion was never lost in crisis.

Dr. Kalra shared that the college is currently co-developing a digital curriculum software that integrates video lectures and interactive modules. Teachers can track student engagement and assign pre-reading, allowing more time for critical discussions and problem-solving in class.

However, she cautioned against letting technology dilute the human aspect of nursing: “No matter how advanced monitors or data systems become, patients still need a nurse’s presence, empathy, and care at the bedside.”

India vs. the West: A Strength in Practical Training

Comparing India’s nursing education system with that of developed countries, Dr. Kalra proudly noted that Indian nurses are often more holistically trained. When students from her college work abroad, they often outperform their counterparts who are trained in narrow specializations.

“In India, we maintain continuity—faculty who teach theory also teach in clinicals,” she explained. “In the West, clinical instruction is often handled by separate preceptors. This separation can weaken the integration between knowledge and practice.”

A Message for the Nursing Community

Dr. Kalra’s message to young nurses and educators was clear: “Put yourself in the patient’s place. That perspective will guide you to be a truly great nurse.” She also stressed the importance of lifelong learning. “Even after nearly four decades in this profession, I still strive to learn every day.”

She concluded with a heartfelt call for greater recognition of nurses. “They’re doing incredible work. What they need most is acknowledgement and continued opportunities for growth.”

Dr. Ramindra Kalra’s insights are a timely reminder that even as technology reshapes healthcare, the soul of nursing lies in compassion, human connection, and the tireless pursuit of excellence.

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, we had the privilege of sitting down with Professor Lavanya Nandan, Principal of Nightingale Institute of Nursing, Noida. Our conversation revolved around how technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the nursing profession.

A Platform for Nursing to Shine

Professor Nandan began by expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to discuss nursing on such a prominent platform. She emphasized how crucial it is for nurses to be recognized in the broader spectrum of healthcare, alongside management and IT professionals.

“It’s wonderful to see nursing being acknowledged as an evolving profession. This platform allows us to address challenges, inclusivity, and progress in the field,” she said.

AI & Technology: Challenge or Opportunity?

When asked about the challenges nurses face with AI and rapidly changing technology, Professor Nandan had an interesting perspective.

“I wouldn’t call it a challenge,” she explained. “Rather, it’s an opportunity we have yet to fully explore. AI, virtual reality, and simulation-based learning are tools that can enhance our profession. We’ve already started integrating them into our curriculum and professional training.”

She pointed out that many corporate hospitals have already embraced digital documentation, replacing traditional paper records. This shift makes nurses more technologically competent and improves patient care.

“In the next five years, AI will be an integral part of nursing. We’re already conducting virtual seminars and on-site workshops to train nurses in these advancements. For example, I recently attended a one-day digital health workshop in Mumbai specifically for nurses. The industry is actively preparing for this transition.”

How is Nursing Adapting to AI?

The conversation then turned to how the nursing industry is implementing AI and tech training.

Professor Nandan reassured that change is already underway. Training programs are now embedded in both educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

“A great initiative has come from the Indian Nursing Council in collaboration with IIT Raipur. They’ve introduced a six-month certification program where IT professionals train nurses in healthcare technology at a very affordable cost. This kind of partnership is exactly what we need to move forward.”

Additionally, telehealth, robotic-assisted surgeries, wearable health gadgets, and digital data collection are already becoming part of nursing practice. Even medical equipment is increasingly embedded with AI, making it essential for nurses to understand and operate them effectively.

Simulation Labs: The Future of Nursing Education

One of the most exciting developments is the rise of simulation-based learning.

“In India, we’re seeing the growth of simulation labs where nurses can practice on AI-powered mannequins. This allows them to refine their skills in a safe, controlled environment before working with real patients,” she shared.

Final Thoughts

As we wrapped up our conversation, Professor Nandan expressed her confidence in nurses adapting to the digital revolution.

“I don’t see this as a challenge but as an innovation. With continuous training, collaboration, and willingness to learn, we can enhance the quality of nursing and patient care.”

It was truly inspiring to hear her insights. As the healthcare landscape evolves, one thing is certain: nurses are not just keeping up with technology – they are leading the way.

Introduction

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, Dr. Urmila Bhardwaj, a distinguished nursing and healthcare professional, shared her insights on the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, and community health nursing. In an engaging discussion with host Mercilina, Dr. Bhardwaj shed light on how these factors are reshaping the healthcare landscape.

Dr. Bhardwaj’s Journey: From Clinical Practice to Academia

Dr. Bhardwaj’s career trajectory is an inspiring story of dedication and growth. Beginning with a diploma in nursing, she pursued higher education while working, eventually obtaining her MSc in Community Health Nursing from PGI Chandigarh and a PhD. Over the years, she contributed immensely to academia, serving as a professor at Jamia Hamdard and later as the Dean of Nursing at Sharda University. Her expertise spans bedside nursing, research, and healthcare education.

Reflecting on her experiences, Dr. Bhardwaj credited Holy Family Hospital for instilling in her the fundamentals of patient care, Jamia Hamdard for nurturing her academic and research skills, and Sharda University for exposing her to the advancements in AI and technology-driven healthcare.

Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword in Nursing

When asked about the role of AI in nursing, Dr. Bhardwaj acknowledged its tremendous potential in academics, particularly in enhancing learning and research. However, she expressed reservations about its clinical application, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of personalized care.

“Every patient is unique,” she noted. “AI functions based on standardized protocols, but human differences, emotions, and responses cannot be programmed.”

She highlighted the importance of human touch in nursing, explaining that even unconscious patients respond positively to physical touch, which has been scientifically proven to accelerate recovery. While AI can be a valuable tool for data management and diagnostics, it cannot substitute the compassion and individualized attention that nurses provide.

Sustainability in Healthcare: The Nurse’s Role

Sustainability has become a global priority, and Dr. Bhardwaj emphasized the significant role nurses play in fostering a sustainable healthcare ecosystem. Hospitals are high-energy consumption environments with significant waste production. Nurses, she suggested, should collaborate with biomedical engineers and healthcare professionals to implement eco-friendly solutions and reduce hospital pollution.

Beyond environmental sustainability, she also stressed financial sustainability. Sharing her research on tetanus vaccinations, she explained how cost-effective preventive care can save lives and reduce healthcare expenses. A simple, low-cost tetanus shot for expecting mothers can prevent neonatal tetanus, eliminating the need for costly medical interventions.

“Sustainability isn’t just about the environment,” she explained. “It’s about ensuring efficient resource utilization and promoting preventive healthcare.”

Community Health Nursing: A Transformative Force

Dr. Bhardwaj passionately spoke about the vital role of community health nurses in both rural and urban settings. Unlike hospital nurses, community health nurses have greater autonomy and the ability to directly influence public health.

“Community health is not limited to rural populations,” she emphasized. “Even urban elites can benefit from preventive healthcare measures.”

She highlighted the concept of primordial prevention—educating young individuals before unhealthy habits develop. For instance, informing school children about the dangers of smoking can prevent tobacco addiction before it even begins.

From prenatal care to elderly support, community health nurses work across all life stages, making them essential contributors to a healthier society.

A Message for Future Nurses

Concluding the discussion, Dr. Bhardwaj left listeners with an inspiring message:

“Serve with sincerity. See God in every individual. If nurses embrace spirituality—treating every patient with the same care and respect they would offer to the divine—the healthcare system will become a place of true compassion and healing.”

Final Thoughts

Dr. Urmila Bhardwaj’s insights provided valuable perspectives on the intersection of AI, sustainability, and community health nursing. While technological advancements continue to shape the future of healthcare, her emphasis on the human touch remains a crucial reminder of what truly defines nursing.
