										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A novel mosquito net that contains insecticides could prevent millions of cases of malaria, according to a Lancet study. A two-year clinical trial in West Africa involving 2000 children showed that the number of cases of clinical malaria was reduced by 12% with the new type of mosquito net compared to the conventional one used normally. Scientists including those from Durham University and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK found that sleeping under the new bed nets were 52% less likely to be moderately anemic than those with a conventional net. Malaria anemia is a major cause of mortality in children under the age of two. The nets used in the study contain a pyrethroid insecticide which repels and kills the mosquitoes as well as an insect growth regulator, pyriproxyfen, which shortens the lives of mosquitoes and reduces their ability to reproduce. In areas with the new combination bed nets, there was a 51% reduction in the risk of a malaria-infective mosquito bite compared to areas with conventional nets.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;">This study is important because malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa has stalled, partly because the mosquitoes are adapting and becoming resistant to the pyrethroid insecticides used for treating the old bed nets. A trial carried out in Burkina Faso where the new types of the net, that had a pyrethroid plus an insect growth hormone, was used and it showed significant protection than the old net type.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The researchers said that if they had scaled-up their trial to the whole of Burkina Faso, they would have reduced the number of malaria cases by 1.2 million. Female Anopheles mosquitoes are increasingly becoming resistant to the most common insecticides, called pyrethroids, used to treat traditional bed nets.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Latest figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that after a dramatic decrease in malaria since the start of the millennium, progress has stalled, and the number of people infected with malaria is now going up in some areas, with insecticide-resistant vectors as one of the possible causes of this.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The researchers suggest the use of bed nets with a combination of chemicals, to be explored for areas where mosquito resistance is a problem. The ingredients on the nets kill more mosquitoes and reduce the number of infective bites than conventional nets treated only with a pyrethroid. As it is less likely that mosquitoes become resistant to both chemicals in the combination bed nets, they are considered a better alternative to tackling malaria in areas where mosquitoes have become resistant to the single chemical used in traditional bed nets. The latest figures from WHO show that in 2016 malaria infected about 216 million people across 91 countries, up to five million from the previous year. The disease killed 445,000 which was about the same number as in 2015. Most deaths were in children under the age of five in the poorest parts of sub-Saharan Africa.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">A child belonging to the lower socioeconomic status, not only has to struggle with a lack of educational opportunities but also a lack of healthy nutrition. This child will most likely go through their formative years having a poor diet which lacks most essential nutrients. This may lead to a lower academic performance throughout the school years, which in turn may lead to fewer job opportunities resulting in lower socioeconomic status. When the same child grows up and starts own family, the cycle continues to the next generation. On the other side of the socio-economic spectrum, a child belonging to an affluent urban family also deals with poor nutrition but in a very different way. More than one-third of such children and adolescents, aged 6yrs to 19yrs, are considered <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comwell-being/contracting-lifestyle-disease-adulthood/">overweight or obese</a>. This is because these children are overfed but remain undernourished. Studies show that more than 90% of children in urban areas, belonging to affluent families, consume more than the recommended amounts of saturated fats and added sugars. The consumption of fruits and vegetables in these children is also observed to be less than the recommended intake. Thus, even though they may appear to be well nourished, they have many underlying nutritional deficiencies. Some of these deficiencies impact the performance of these children in academics and extracurricular activities.</span></p>

	<p><b>Relationship Between Breakfast And Academic Performance </b></p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">There have been many studies that have looked at the relationship between breakfast consumption and academic performance in children, and most have concluded that </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">eating breakfast improves cognitive functions like memory recall. A study was done in Norway which looked at 475 high school children, found that those who ate breakfast regularly had fewer difficulties in learning, especially mathematics, besides improved reading and writing. Another study carried out in China on kindergarten students found that kids who ate breakfast had higher IQs (intelligent quotients). This was independent of the education level of the parents, or the family’s <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comresearch/socioeconomic-inequalities/">socioeconomic</a> status. Many similar studies carried out over the years have reported that skipping breakfast was associated with decreased cognitive performance (e.g., alertness, attention, memory, processing of complex visual display, problem-solving, etc.) among the students. Children who do not eat an adequate breakfast can also suffer from hunger pangs while in school, headaches, and stomach pains due to excessive acid, etc. This, besides being a source of distraction for children, can also lead to absence from classes, which in turn can affect academic performance in school.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Interestingly, studies have not just found a positive association with breakfast consumption but also between the quality of meals and academic performance. A study carried out in Scotland investigated the consumption of sugary drinks, sweets, chocolates, pizza, savory snacks and hot dogs with learning abilities. The study found that children who had a higher consumption of these foods had increased mathematical difficulties as compared to children who had a more nutritious dietary intake. Another study found that children who ate <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comwell-being/consumption-of-fruits-cuts-death-risk/">healthier foods</a> with a low glycemic index had better attention span, word recall and reaction time than children who consumed food with a higher glycemic index that leads to <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comresearch/new-reading-high-blood-pressure/">high blood glucose levels</a> soon after consumption Sub-optimal intake of foods, such as <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comwell-being/consumption-of-fruits-cuts-death-risk/">fruits</a>, vegetables, and dairy products, has also been associated with lower grades among students.</span></p>

Today, many mothers with children as young as 10 years old, feel that enrolling their children in extracurricular activities will take time away from their studies and result in poorer academic results. On the contrary, studies have shown that students who are physically active, perform better in school, compared to children who are physically inactive. These kids not only have better grades but also better attendance and fewer absenteeism, better memory recall, concentration during lessons and lesser disciplinary problems. <p style="text-align: justify !important;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are specific micro-nutrients that have been associated with better academic performance.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children with deficiencies of micronutrients like vitamin A, B6, B12, folic acid, iron, zinc, and calcium, have shown to score lower grades and result in higher absenteeism. Two nutrients, known to have the strongest relation to school performance, are iron and zinc. Iron is an integral part of hemoglobin which is the oxygen-carrying molecule in the blood. Deficiency of iron is called anemia. Symptoms of iron deficiency include fatigue or tiredness, lethargy, slowed growth and development, poor appetite, abnormally rapid breathing, behavioral problems or disciplinary issues and susceptibility to frequent infections. All these individually and collectively can lead to increased absenteeism and thereby decreased academic performance. Iron deficiency also directly affects the ability to undertake physical activity, which in turn can further affect performance in school. Zinc is mainly needed for the body’s immune system to work properly. In addition, it is involved in cell growth, wound healing and for the sense of taste and smell. Symptoms of zinc deficiency are <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comtrends/exercise-in-big-parks-can-reduce-depression/">depression</a> and psychological disorders, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">impaired immunity, impaired growth, diarrhea, delayed sexual maturation, alopecia or abnormal hair growth, impaired appetite, altered cognitive functions and altered sense of smell and taste. Zinc deficiency also leads to poorer performance in school. This can be due to the fact that children with zinc deficiency are more prone to catching an infection and falling sick, thereby missing classes, their ability to memorize is affected, there are psychological disorders that can affect learning, etc. So, how can parents ensure that they give their children the best advantage for improving academic performance? 	<p><strong>Simple measures Iron zinc deficiencies</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">India is one of the leading exporters of cereals. It is the second largest producer of rice and fruits in the world. Overall, the country is self-sufficient in food production. Yet iron and zinc deficiencies are widespread even amongst well-nourished children.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A recent study has found that it could be because cereals, tubers, and legumes, which are the major constituents of a staple diet, contained a class of substances called phytates in high amounts. Phytates are considered ‘anti-nutrient’ as they attach themselves to the iron and zinc in the food. And make them unavailable to the body for its use. This low ‘bioavailability’ is the main cause of deficiency of iron and zinc in the Indian population.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">But, one should not eliminate the phytates from the diet. Phytates help in fighting off cancer and age-related changes in the body.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The researchers have recommended modifying eating habits and cooking practices. South Indian cooking, for instance, follows a process of fermentation, soaking, and germination which reduces the phytate content. Likewise, a simple intervention such as taking a piece of guava or Indian gooseberry (amla) fruit after food or while taking iron tablets would double the availability of iron and zinc in the body.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In addition, they suggest, measures like minimal milling, intake of vitamin C, heating, and enzymatic treatment of grains with phytates enzyme and consuming curds, yogurts, and probiotic cultures to maintain an acid environment in the gut as well as genetic improvement of food crops may enhance bioavailability of iron and zinc. Further, non-vegetarian foods can also make available more iron and zinc to the body.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The study, conducted by researchers at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, has found that the country as a whole requires 8,170 tonnes of iron and 4,412 tonnes of zinc in the food to meet nutritional iron and zinc requirements of the entire population. Availability of iron from the plant and animal food sources is estimated at 10,939 tonnes per year and that of zinc at 6,335 tonnes per year. In other words, there is enough supply of iron and zinc through food sources in the country. The intake of the two micronutrients is also adequate.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Agricultural crops such as cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and sugar contribute the major share of the requirements, at 82.8% for iron and 78.6% for zinc. This is followed by the animal husbandry sector, including milk and milk products, meat, mutton, beef, pork, chicken, and eggs, which account for 3.9% iron and 11.7% zinc. The horticultural sector (including fruits, vegetables, and nuts) contributes 12.9% iron and 9.1% zinc to national production. The fisheries sector is at the tail end, providing 0.42% iron and 0.62% zinc.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The researchers have published a report on the study in a recent issue of journal Current Science.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Dr A.N. Ganeshamurthy, leader of the research team, said, “There was a need for research efforts to focus on methods to reduce phytate content of Indian foods to enhance bioavailability. This should be at the forefront of nutritional programmes rather than trying to improve the quality or yield of crops.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">“Before a new variety is released for farming by a breeder, the Institute/State/National-level variety release committees must take into account the issue of absorption of iron and zinc. Efforts to improve the quality and yield of crops or the ‘biofortification programmes’ will prove to be a failure if they do not address the issue of bioavailability of nutrients. Furthermore, we must do all we can to ensure a healthy soil and a healthy production environment with good agricultural practices,” he added.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Iron deficiency, which may or may not result in anaemia, leads to a substantial loss in physical productivity in adults. Iron deficiency associated with maternal mortality, pre-term labor, low birth weight and infant mortality. In children, it affects development and increases the likelihood of sickness. The highest prevalence of anaemia is seen in children around 15 years of age, in pregnant women and elderly people. Zinc deficiency, in turn, may cause hair loss, affect the taste and smell, among other things.</p>

	<p><strong>Importance of understanding the specific health situation of each state</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Understanding the health and disease trends in groups of states at a similar level of development or epidemiological transition is an important intermediate step in teasing apart the heterogeneity of disease and risk factor epidemiology in India. However, effective action to improve health must finally be based on the specific health situation of each state. This point is elucidated by significant variations in the burden from leading diseases and risk factors in 2016 between the following pairs of states that have physical proximity and are at similar levels of development and epidemiological transition.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The major EAG states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh both have a relatively lower level of development indicators and are at a similar less advanced epidemiological transition stage. However, Uttar Pradesh had 50% higher disease burden per person from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 54% higher burden from tuberculosis, and 30% higher burden from diarrheal diseases, whereas Madhya Pradesh had 76% higher disease burden per person from stroke.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The cardiovascular risks were generally higher in Madhya Pradesh, and the unsafe water and sanitation risk was relatively higher in Uttar Pradesh. The two North-East India states of Manipur and Tripura are both at a lower-middle stage of epidemiological transition but have quite different disease burden rates from specific leading diseases.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Tripura had 49% higher per person burden from ischaemic heart disease, 52% higher from stroke, 64% higher from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 159% higher from iron-deficiency anaemia, 59% higher from lower respiratory infections, and 56% higher from neonatal disorders.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Manipur, on the other hand, had 88% higher per person burden from tuberculosis and 38% higher from road injuries. Regarding the level of risks, child and maternal malnutrition, air pollution, and several of the cardiovascular risks were higher in Tripura.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The two adjoining north Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab both have a relatively higher level of development indicators and are at a similar more advanced epidemiological transition stage. However, there were striking differences between them in the level of burden from specific leading diseases.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Punjab had 157% higher per person burden from diabetes, 134% higher burden from ischaemic heart disease, 49% higher burden from stroke, and 56% higher burden from road injuries.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh had 63% higher per person burden from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Consistent with these findings, Punjab had substantially higher levels of cardiovascular risks than Himachal Pradesh.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The Executive summary says these examples highlight why it is necessary to understand the specific disease burden trends in each state, over and above the useful broad insights provided by trends common for groups of states at similar levels of epidemiological transition, if health action has to be planned for the specific context of each state.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The chances of achieving the overall health targets set by India would be much higher if the biggest health problems and risks in each state are tackled on priority than with a more generic approach that does not take into account the specific disease burden trends in each state.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Application of the state-level disease burden findings and future work. The findings in this report of the India State-level Disease Burden Initiative can be used for planning of state health budgets, prioritisation of interventions relevant to each state, informing the government’s Health Assurance Mission in each state, monitoring of health-related Sustainable Development Goals targets in each state, assessing impact of large-scale interventions based on time trends of disease burden, and forecasting population health under various scenarios in each state.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Future plans of the India State-level Disease Burden Initiative include annual updates of the estimates based on newly available data, and more disaggregated findings such as the rural-urban estimates planned for next year and sub-state level estimates subsequently when adequate data become available.</p>
