Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare IT

Microsoft, one of the largest information technology companies, has been working on several healthcare-related projects. Recently, Microsoft made clear its exact intentions behind developing a Microsoft healthcare team. The company aims to create a cloud-based patients’ profile, push doctors to use more cloud-based services, and eventually develop an AI to analyze the huge data. Microsoft hired two industry past masters: Jim Weinstein and Joshua Mandel to help achieve this goal. Jim Weinstein, the former CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System, will help the migration of healthcare data to the cloud. Joshua Mandel, ex-Google employee, will assist in building open cloud architecture for all healthcare service providers.

The prime motive behind the project is to find a way to shift healthcare data to the cloud without jeopardizing its confidentiality. This new team will be a part of Microsoft’s AI research division. Peter Lee, the head of Microsoft healthcare, explained, at Microsoft, we’re confident that many aspects of the IT foundations for healthcare will move from on-premise doctors’ offices and clinics to live in the cloud. We are taking concrete steps with an initial blueprint intended to standardize the process for the complaint, privacy-preserving movement of a patient’s personal health information to the cloud and the automated tracking of its exposure to machine learning and data science. The company wants to pave the way to create an open architecture that eventually helps doctors, nurses and healthcare service providers, and to allow more time for patients to spend face-to-face with the doctors. The new platform will open new opportunities for healthcare data to be shared and to protect its privacy. Such innovative projects and huge investments in healthcare AI proves that the incorporation of AI in healthcare IT will be a fruitful investment for the healthcare providers, and no doubt it will be a key to the bright future of healthcare sector.

The world over, he said, moves are underway to reduce the cost of quality treatment. Recently, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JP Morgan have announced a company with an Indian American Dr. Atul Gawande as its CEO to work out healthcare of US employees. It might be typical of disrupting the healthcare industry whale cost, a conundrum is raging madly. The new company will be headquartered in Boston and will operate as an independent entity that is free from profit-making incentives and constraints.

Dr. Gawande is a globally-renowned surgeon, writer, and public health innovator. He practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is a Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School.

“I’m thrilled to be named CEO of this healthcare initiative,” said Dr. Gawande, “I have devoted my public health career to building scalable solutions for better healthcare delivery that are saving lives, reducing suffering, and eliminating wasteful spending both in the US and across the world”. This work will take time but must be done. The system is broken, and better is possible.”

He is the Founding Executive Director of the health systems innovation center, Ariadne Labs. He also is a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine, has written four New York Times bestsellers: Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and Being Mortal, and has received numerous awards for his contributions to science and healthcare.

“Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming the dangers of childbirth, injury, and disease from harrowing to manageable. Dr. Kotecha envisions Indian traditional medicines’ colossal potential in ensuring cheap and best treatment and country’s values, coupled with such medicines, have answers of all these emerging challenges. He spoke briefly about the “Being Mortal” book and the newly formed company.

The AYUSH Secretary was of the view that Indian traditional medicines should be included in ICD -11 as Chinese medicines have entered the classification already. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the international “standard diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management, and clinical purposes.” Its full official name is International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems and is maintained by WHO.

Amid these developments, the protocols have been framed. Dr. Partap Chauhan, Director Jiva Ayurveda, narrated his arduous journey and said India’s traditional medicines efficacy was being recognized the world over, and his protocol would help according to it a scientific explanation on various parameters.

After analysis, running into thousands of hours using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer modeling, the Jiva analysts concluded that while the Ayurveda treatment cannot be standardized for every patient, Ayurveda practice can surely be standardized. In other words, the way Ayurveda practitioners diagnose patients can be standardized by laying down definite protocols.
