Event Overview

With the theme “Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach” unfurled the beginning of the 18^th IC InnovatorClub meeting held on May 25,2024.

The event brought together leading experts, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to discuss innovative solutions to one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global health, demanding a concerted effort across various sectors to combat its spread effectively.

Introduction and setting the tone

In his opening remarks, Mr. Sachin Gaur set the tone of urgency and immediate collaboration as he addressed the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Drawing from personal experience and insights gained from international forums, he underscored the global nature of the problem and emphasised on the need for proactive strategies in combating AMR. Mr.Gaur acknowledged the growing awareness surrounding AMR but calls for a shift from reactionary approaches to more comprehensive and coordinated efforts.

Keynote Address by Ms. Jasmine Kaur

In her keynote address, Jasmine Kaur, a researcher at the division of biomedical informatics at ICMR and a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Computational Biology at IIIT Delhi, delves into the challenges of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and suggested innovative solutions through a multidisciplinary lens. She elucidated the essence of AMR, highlighting its detrimental impact on global health by rendering previously effective medications ineffective. Kaur emphasised the urgent need for proactive strategies in combating AMR, citing alarming statistics of associated deaths in 2019. She identified the key challenges hindering effective AMR management, such as fragmented datasets, lack of accessible technical innovations, and implementation gaps. Providing insights into India’s AMR surveillance landscape. Ms.Kaur discussed various national-level surveillance systems and enlightened the importance of standardising data collection and enhancing data sharing mechanisms. She advocated for the development of an ideal AMR surveillance system that is interoperable, standardised, and capable of providing nationwide projections. Ms.Kaur introduced tools developed by ICMR for data collection and highlights their significance in guiding antimicrobial use policies. Drawing from her recent study published in Lancet Southeast Asia, she showcased the utility of AI-based insights in analysing AMR trends and identifying indicator antibiotics.She concluded by stressing the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders in combating AMR and called for greater implementation and awareness to make substantial progress in this global health challenge.

Keynote Address by Advocate Rabin Majumdar

In the keynote address, Advocate Rabin Majumdar, an advocate at the Supreme Court of India focused on AMR and environmental law, highlights the legal dimensions of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its implications for public health and the environment. He emphasised on the need for global cooperation in addressing AMR and stressed the importance of interstate and international coordination. Majumdar discussed India’s efforts in mapping the AMR research landscape and called for better coordination between various governmental departments. He shared his insights on the environmental impact of pharmaceutical manufacturing and augmented for smart regulation of antibiotic use to mitigate AMR. He further highlighted the role of the National Green Tribunal in addressing AMR-related environmental issues and underscores the importance of regulatory mechanisms in preventing contamination. Despite existing policies, he acknowledged implementation of challenges and stressed the need for strong legal commitment and public-private partnerships. Majumdar concluded by emphasising the importance of comprehensive and coordinated efforts in involving all stakeholders to effectively combat AMR on a global scale.

Panel Discussion

The panel discussion, moderated by Adv. Rabin Majumder, brought together esteemed experts to explore various facets of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and proposed solutions to combat this global health challenge. Dr. Ranga Reddy Burri, President of the Infection Control Academy of India (IFCAI), emphasised the One Health approach to AMR, stressing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Dr. Sonal Saxena, Director Professor & Head, Microbiology Department , Maulana Azad Medical College, shed light on the challenges of AMR in hospital settings, particularly focusing on hospital-acquired infections and the importance of infection control practices. Dr. Vikash Ranjan,Manager Medical Affairs,BioMérieux, provided insights from the industry perspective, highlighting the crucial role of diagnostics in managing AMR, including the need for rapid and accurate tests to guide targeted therapy and reduce antibiotic misuse.

Throughout the discussion, several key themes emerged. Collaboration across disciplines and sectors was highlighted as essential for developing comprehensive strategies to combat AMR effectively. The importance of early diagnosis, accessible diagnostic tools, and technological advancements in diagnostics were underscored as crucial elements in managing AMR in healthcare settings. Additionally, the panellists emphasised the significance of education and public awareness in addressing AMR, advocating for curriculum development, public awareness campaigns, and community engagement initiatives to promote responsible antibiotic use.

In conclusion, the panel discussion underscored the urgent need for a holistic and coordinated approach to address AMR, involving collaboration between academia, industry, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the public. By leveraging the strengths of each sector and implementing evidence-based strategies, there is hope for effectively managing and controlling AMR to safeguard public health and preserve antibiotic effectiveness for future generations.

Study: Awareness about Hypertension Very Low

Hypertension, high blood pressure or BP, call it by any name; is a common condition which is caused by the force of blood against the artery walls.

A new study has highlighted the need for an intensive effort to improve upon hypertension awareness, care and control in the country especially for those in the most productive age group of 15–49 years, with emphasis on households with lower-income levels and those living in rural areas.

The study, which was based on the data collected under the National Health and Family Survey 2015–16 has found that efforts to tackle hypertension are lacking in all aspects, from screening for the condition and providing a diagnosis to the level of treatment given to the patients.

The data, for instance, showed that only three out of four people, who were found to have hypertension during the survey, had ever been checked for blood pressure earlier and only 45 percent of the hypertensive patients identified during the survey already knew that they suffered from blood pressure problem. Further, less than one in seven (13 percent) reported that they were under hypertensive medication and less than one in 10 (8 percent) had their blood pressure under control.

Significantly, contrary to general expectations, women had better control over their blood pressure than men. The analysis revealed that while 10.9 percent of hypertensive women were taking their medicine and had normal blood pressure; on the contrary, only 5.3 percent of hypertensive men did so.

The National Health and Family Welfare Survey had covered 731,864 individuals from twenty-nine states and seven union territories.

“Detection of hypertension is straightforward, treatments are simple yet effective, and hence hypertension can be easily controlled. However, India does not perform well in any of the measures of detection, treatment and control,” said Dr. Dorairaj Prabhakaran, Vice President, Research and Policy at PHFI and one of the authors of the study. “The new National Health Mission through the health and wellness clinics has the potential to address the issue.”

Dr. Lindsay Jaacks, another member of the research team, said, “we need demand-side interventions to raise awareness in India that hypertension is relatively easy and cheap to treat, and that keeping it under control can have huge benefits in terms of preventing heart attacks and stroke.”

Sweden-India Collaboration in Health Sector

An interview with H.E. Klas Molin, Swedish Ambassador to India done by Sachin Gaur, Director Operations at InnovatioCuris for InnoHEALTH Magazine.

H.E. Klas Molin has been serving as the Ambassador of Sweden to India since 2017. Prior to this, he served as the Ambassador and Chief of Protocol at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm, Sweden.

He also held various positions at Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm. He earned his Masters of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (USA).

Q. What is the Swedish interest in India and your priority topics for the Indian health sector?

We have a very fruitful bilateral collaboration with India in the health sector, beginning with our development cooperation in areas such as mother- and child health, midwifery, and work against communicable diseases. Cooperation has now increased to mutually beneficial partnerships. For the past ten years, we have had a Memorandum of Understanding on Health between our countries and next year we are going to celebrate this with an India-Swedish Health Year.

Many collaborations of mutual interests are ongoing and being planned that focus in a wide range of areas like antimicrobial resistance, elderly care, pharmaceuticals, non-communicable diseases and digital innovations including artificial intelligence, where the emphasis will be on knowledge transfer, capacity building and skills training.

InnoBRIDGE Sweden 2019 : Report

Q. An MoU was signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sweden on 17th April 2018 at Stockholm on “India-Sweden Innovation Partnership for a Sustainable Future”. Can you share the progress with respect to healthcare?

We are in the process of putting out calls and setting up incubators which will encourage close collaboration between the innovators in Sweden and India. Solutions are only sustainable if both sides contribute and share a strong sense of ownership. Progress has already been made in laying the groundwork for such partnerships within the sectors of clean energy and smart cities, and we hope to launch initiatives targeted to healthcare during the coming year. The Embassy will be sure to keep you posted.

InnovatioCuris signed MoU with Swecare

Q. India and Sweden will complete 10 years of Partnership in Health Sector in 2019, any plans in store for 2019?

India and Sweden plan to commemorate the ten years completion of the MoU in 2019. We hope to enhance our collaborations in new areas with new stakeholders like the new AIIMS that have come up in some states. We also hope to have high-level visits from both sides to enhance policy dialogues and bilateral relations. Some of the collaborative partners are also developing new plans to strengthen their cooperation.

Q. What can Indian healthcare businesses gain from Swedish healthcare businesses?

Any suggestions on possible partnerships? It is not so much what the Indian healthcare system can gain, but rather, how can we join forces to overcome common challenges. Swedish businesses have been in India for many years. Within healthcare, we have AstraZeneca, who recently celebrated 40 years in India, and Getinge who has been investing in the Indian ecosystem for many years. Their focus, like many others, has been in building the capacity of their employees and the users of their products to increase efficiency. The businesses also bring with them lessons from Sweden so that we can help India leapfrog outdated technology. Sweden also ranks high in most innovation indexes – it can be argued that our relatively small size makes collaborations outside traditional silos necessary in order to succeed. Public actors, private companies, and institutions often work together in finding innovative solutions to serious healthcare challenges. We would like to work with India to build spaces for similar ecosystems across India.

Q. What are the common areas for healthcare research and ongoing partnerships for both sides to collaborate?

Under the MoU, there are extensive collaborations between public authorities and universities from both countries. For instance, the Swedish Public Health Agency, Medical Product Agency and Forte (the Swedish Research Council on Health, Working Life and Welfare) have an ongoing collaboration with their Indian counterparts. There are ongoing discussions on extending collaborations with new players like our National Board of Health and Welfare and E-Health Authority as well as between our medical universities such as Karolinska Institute, Uppsala University and the different AIIMS.

Through these collaborations, we hope to demonstrate best practices and technologies. We have research calls in different areas for example with EU in big data and artificial intelligence for monitoring health status and quality of life after cancer treatment, under JPIAMR call on diagnostics and surveillance 2019.

Innovation-the UNNATI way is an India-Sweden Innovators for strategic business development to address global challenges. It is an industry-supported initiative coordinated by Business Sweden in collaboration with AGNIi-Invest India and ATAL Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog.

Q. You have signed for skilling nurses on infection control, wound care and diagnostics with Govt of Maharashtra in 2016. What is your experience of the last two years?

I believe the overall experience has been good. Business Sweden will, however, be able to provide more information on this as they have been coordinating this activity.

Q. Anti-Microbial Resistance is an important issue right now. How do you propose the Swedish Govt. support in this area?

The Swedish Public Health Agency and the Indian National Centre for Disease Control have an ongoing collaboration with a focus on antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, the Indian Ministry of Health has proposed that Sweden collaborate closely with a new-AIIMS and its associated Health and Wellness Centres. AIIMS-Jodhpur has been suggested to us and we are currently considering the scope of such collaboration.

Q. Artificial Intelligence seems to be a focus area for Sweden in the Health Sector?

Do you see any collaboration in this field with Indian providers? This is a hot topic all over the world right now. I know India is well ahead in AI technology while Sweden has more long-term experience in extracting relevant information from vast amounts of data. Our patient registries have enabled us to have one of the highest cancer survival rates in the world and that is only one example. I believe we will see some collaborations in the coming year, especially as you are arranging a delegation to Sweden addressing this exact topic in May next year. I will follow this progress closely.

Q. What is your message for InnoHEALTH Magazine readers? How can we, as a platform, support India-Swedish collaboration?

I congratulate InnovatioCuris for collaborating with Swecare Foundation and Swedish Medtech in facilitating innovative and promising solutions for India. Sweden has a long tradition of developing innovations in healthcare. We also have a well-functioning public sector, together with extensive health data registries, biobanks and digital connectivity infrastructure, that provides great opportunities to develop innovative, demand-driven, competitive solutions for healthcare. Exciting opportunities abound in an environment dedicated to medical innovation, drug discovery and pharmaceutical commercialization. Sweden and India have lots to share and learn from each other!

Fairytales of Nanoparticles – IC Club Meeting

Dr. Pavan Varma co-founded Biotech start-ups in Varanasi and New Delhi. He has business experience in molecular diagnostics, genomics, contract research, and product development. He has conducted several Biotech workshops and training sessions for science graduates in Varanasi and also established several in-house panels for rare genetic disorders, cancers, and infectious agents along with design and development of low-cost DNA tools.

On a day of plunging temperature at Reykjavik airport in Iceland almost thirteen years ago, a few journalists, while briskly walking on the tarmac to embark on a special aircraft, were impatient to find out exact definition of Nanoparticles.

They were expecting this midair query from the scientist turned President APJ Kalam with whom they were flying on the state visit to a few nations including big bang experiment site at CERN laboratory on the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.

Dr. Kalam, during onboard freewheeling interactions with accompanying media contingent used to ask several simple questions while giving an elaborative narrative of complex scientific issues in common man language. His narration on Nanoparticles usage in health care discipline was always a gripping one.

Coincidently, on a day of soaring temperature in the same month 13 years after, another Scientist Dr. Amit Kumar Dinda was batting coolly on the subject in a lecture hall of Jamia Millia Islamia Central University in the national capital and was giving an absorbing narrative on Nanoparticles. His chronicle was equally informative and exciting.

For me, it was an instant revival of flashback memories of Nanoparticles and developments in India and Dr. Kalam’s vision of Nanoparticles researches and its usage in various disciplines.

The mega dissertation on the Nano theme by Dr. Dinda from AIIMS, New Delhi was equally engrossing. He was speaking at the Third IC (InnovatioCuris) meeting which had a talk regarding Nanotechnology and its commercial impact.

The talk highlighted the significance of Nanotechnology as a future driver of innovations and useful economy. He further exemplified with his own contributions to the field including nanoparticulate ambisomes against Kala-azar, nano formulation based HBV vaccine for oral delivery, nanoformulations against leishmaniasis.

The focus of the IC club meeting was about Biotechnology future innovation, Funding scenario and Start-ups. It was for the first time that the IC club meeting was organized in a university to encourage participation of academia.

Dr. Dinda has equally cautioned the pitfalls in Nano research and product development, which was very elucidative and useful for the present members and students. His experience with Nanoscience made him realise the importance of collaborative approach, as it is a highly inter-disciplinary science.

Nanotechnology is very liberative and robust in the sense that it offers low cost, and viable and scalable technology, the sort of which is need of the hour in India. Also given the reason that it has been practised in India in Ayurveda, gives a point of leveraging for existing vedic processes. The impacted areas range from health, environment, water purification, therapeutics, organ regeneration, to such hi-fi technologies like nanotised robots for vivo monitoring.

Dr. Dinda, also stressed on the importance of quality human resource and specially a dedicated one. He has given several examples of his experience abroad during his residency, where he was member of several failure commitees, and stressed on the importance of reasoning a failure.

The other talk in the meeting was given by Dr. Pavan from Scangene Labs, a first generation entrepreneur in the biotechnology domain with focus on low cost diagnostics. He shared his experience of establishing his start-up and his companies plan A and plan B. His team was instrumental in developing several panels for diagnosis of cancer markers and rare genetic disorders. They developed low cost equipment and devices for use in reserach setups and educational institutes.

Dr. Pavan have showcased their research into development of a low cost TB resistance screening devise and claimed to make it a less than one dollar possibility. They stressed the importance of having a plan A and plan B for survival in the Biotech Start-up landscape. They concluded saying India needs more PADMAN’s in Biotechnology.

The general mood of the meeting was regarding the buzz in the policy shift towards biological sector by the Government of India. Several important observations were shared by the clubites in this regard, like the present call for grand challenges focussed towards synthetic biology, the present heads of scientific bodies being decorated by emineries from biology background, etc. The other significant dialogue in the meeting was regarding focus on low cost technology, and the importance of quality certification and /or recognition by regulatory bodies.

Dr. Amit Kumar Dinda MD, PhD is a Professor of Department of Pathology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. After his post graduation in Pathology he did his PhD in the area of Cancer Biology at the same institute. His area of work includes Immunopathology, Inflammation and cell biology, Experimental pathology, Ultrastructural pathology, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine. In the area of Nanomedicine, he is actively involved in several projects related to nanoparticle-mediated drug delivery, antigen and DNA delivery system. Dr. Amit is working in the area of nano-cell biology to understand nanoparticle and cellular interaction. He is in the editorial committee of 12 national & international journals. He has worked as a Visiting Professor in Long Island Jews Medical Center & Elbert Einstein Medical College, New York, USA as well as University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Dr. Amit has published more than 200 research articles in indexed journals and edited 4 books. He has written 14 chapters in books and acquired 3 patents in the areas of nanotechnology and biopolymer.

The other interesting discussion was for the need of an ecosystem for development of tools and devices for Biotechnology.

India aims to eliminate TB by 2025

Dr. Soumya Swaminanthan needs no introduction. The 58-year-old pediatrician and clinical scientist has been recently nominated as Deputy Director General of the World Health Organisation. Ms. Swaminanthan, the pioneer in Tuberculosis research, advocates the role of research to root out the disease as the country has the highest number of cases in the world.

India’s National Health Policy recognizes the key role that research plays in the development of a nation’s health. The India TB Research Consortium brings together diverse stakeholders to develop new tools – diagnostics, vaccines and drugs – to enable the country to take a leadership role in fast tracking translational TB research and find solutions for the world.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan (Secretary, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Director General, ICMR) recently at the second International Scientific Advisory Group (ISAG) meeting, states India has the highest number of TB cases in the world. It is widely recognised that the field needs new tools to make a greater impact on this disease, including more sensitive diagnosis, preventive vaccines and new drugs to treat MDR-TB.

The India Tuberculosis Research Consortium (ITRC), formed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Delhi convened its second International Scientific Advisory Group (ISAG) meeting.

The ISAG comprises global experts in the areas of TB research and has been formed to advise the ITRC on developing and translating, research & development leads across four key thematic areas – diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics and implementation research – taking into account the research leads in each area, available both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Barry R. Bloom (Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard University and Chair, ISAG) addressing the meeting states, “TB is now the largest single cause of death in the world from an infectious disease.

Hence, the Government of India has made a significant commitment to support research to prevent and control the disease in India.” India’s National Strategic Plan 2017 for TB elimination aims to achieve and maintain a cure rate of >85% in new sputum positive patients for TB and reduce incidence of new cases, to reach elimination status by the year 2025.

A two-day national level event InnoHEALTH 2017 was hosted in the capital with international participants. Vigyan Arya reports about the two-day high profile event attended by leading industry representatives from India and abroad.

A voice to raise concern about the increasing cost of health and medical facilities was given a platform at the two-day InnoHEALTH 2017 that was hosted on September 18th and 19th in the capital. In the second year of its running, the event was co-hosted by InnovatioCuris and Indiattitude that extended a stage for innovations in the field of health and medicine.

Addressing the large gathering of doctors and high-profile professionals from the industry, Dr V.K. Singh, the visionary behind this event conveyed that the prime objective of this mega event is to contribute towards bringing down the healthcare delivery cost yet maintaining the quality.

InnoHEALTH 2017 helped in doing so by creating deliberations among policy makers, industry and academia on topics linked with Innovations in Hospitals, diagnostics, medical devices, pharma, biotech, digital healthcare and new delivery models.

The conference saw an attendance of around 250 Delegates with an overwhelming response of 170 on the very first day including 50 elite speakers from all over the world.

H.E. Riho Kruuv, Estonian Ambassador to India, DG Armed Forces Medical Services and Prof. Anil Gupta known for his work of innovations were some of the key speakers. The attendance saw presence from renowned healthcare personalities such as Dr. Arvind Lal of Lal Pathlabs, Dr. Ravi Gaur CEO Oncquest Labs, Dr. Padam Khanna – NHSRC, Mr. Partha Dey – IBM India, Mr. R Rengarajan Iyengar from HCL Healthcare.

On the first day of the power-packed two-day event, the conference hosted a B2B meeting to connect the Indian stakeholders with a visiting European Union delegation pertaining to innovative health sector companies. The companies were selected through a competitive program with a focus on cost-effective innovations for the Indian market.

With the objective of making it an international platform for the industry professionals with similar aims and goals, the conference had very high-profile brands, corporate and government organizations shouldering their support. Conference also hosted young innovators award.

The big boost in the confidence and capabilities of the conference was extended by the Embassy of Estonia, as the country partner. Other leading partners included, NHSRC representatives of MoHFW, Government of India, Public Health Foundation of India; CAHO as the association of accredited hospitals of India and AHPI that represents more than 10,000 private healthcare providers. IAMI brought in the clinicians involved in healthcare analytics while ScanBalt brings the outreach to more than 22,000 professionals in 11 European countries.

There were many more that contributed feathers to the hat to make InnoHEALTH 2017 a very successful event in terms of the perceived outcome.

The two-day event saw some very insightful discussions on, Innovations for Hospitals; Diagnostics of Tomorrow; Innovations for Affordable Healthcare – A Medical Device Perspective and Public Health and Biotech, on the first day of the conference.

The second day started off with a very informative keynote address by Professor Rishikesha T. Krishnan of IIM Indore. He is a Director and Professor of Strategic Management at the Indian Institute of Management in Indore.

It was followed by discussions on Healthcare Beyond Hospitals; Innovations in the Pharma Sector; Digital Health: Giving birth to new delivery models and fostering innovations, finally followed by Challenges and Redefining Healthcare Landscape.

The last two sessions of the day opened a very important chapter in the field of innovations in health sector. Indian and international companies were given a platform to make their pitch claiming the coveted Innovations titles. The finale was the dispensing of Young Innovations Awards.

Overwhelmed by the encouraging response this year, the organizers announced the dates for the next InnoHEALTH 2018, to take place on 5th – 6th October 2018, with a raised hope to come back next year keeping shared goals in healthcare with only, bigger, better and meatier roles for all stakeholders.

Innovation is not very old. Despite that Public Health is the most curative neglected area as most doctors do not wish to go in that direction.
