In a groundbreaking session titled “Future-Ready Hospitals: A Blueprint for 2030,” industry leaders gathered to discuss the transformative potential of technology in healthcare. The session was moderated by Dr. Kousar Shah, Group CEO of Sharda HealthCare, and featured key insights from a panel of experts including Ms. Manini Puranik, Ms. Monika Aggarwal, Dr. Raajeev Virmani, Mr. Vishal Gupta, and Mr. Pradeep Saha.

The Role of AI in Healthcare Transformation

The session kicked off with Ms. Manini Puranik, Founder of Ekayaa Consulting, emphasizing the paradigm shift that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing to healthcare. She illustrated how AI is moving beyond being a mere system of record to becoming an integral part of hospital operations. “AI is changing the way we interact with technology in healthcare, making processes more natural and intuitive for both patients and providers,” she noted.

Ms. Puranik shared a thought-provoking scenario from an AI-enabled clinic, where a virtual assistant could assess patients and provide personalized recommendations. This underscores the potential of AI to enhance patient experiences and reduce wait times—transforming how patients interact with healthcare facilities.

Building Patient-Centric Infrastructure

Next, Ms. Monika Aggarwal, Director of IT at Sarvodaya Hospital, presented her vision for patient-centric hospital design. She highlighted the importance of creating spaces that promote healing and comfort. “Hospitals in 2030 should be lean, safe, and patient-focused,” she asserted, advocating for designs that incorporate natural light, open spaces, and flexible treatment environments.

Aggarwal also touched upon the integration of digital touchpoints, such as mobile applications and real-time monitoring systems, to improve patient engagement and outcomes. By focusing on user experience, healthcare facilities can significantly enhance the patient journey and satisfaction levels.

Overcoming Challenges in AI Integration

Dr. Raajeev Virmani, Clinical Head at GE HealthCare, addressed the potential challenges in implementing AI within healthcare systems. He warned that while AI holds great promise, resistance to change and fragmented data systems could hinder progress. “The key to successful AI integration lies in ensuring data interoperability and addressing ethical concerns,” he emphasized.

Dr. Virmani also highlighted the importance of workforce training, stating that healthcare professionals need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to utilize AI tools effectively. “If we cannot explain the algorithms and their benefits clearly, we will struggle to gain acceptance,” he remarked.

Creating a Sustainable Healthcare Ecosystem

Mr. Vishal Gupta, Head of Healthcare Business at Ingram Micro India Pvt. Ltd., shared insights on the financial sustainability of hospitals in the age of digital transformation. He highlighted the need for hospitals to focus not only on technological investments but also on operational efficiencies to ensure long-term viability.

“Technologies should enhance the quality of care while optimizing costs,” Gupta stated, emphasizing that the return on investment (ROI) should encompass both financial metrics and patient health outcomes. He stressed the importance of holistic approaches to healthcare that prioritize patient safety and satisfaction.

Cybersecurity in the Age of Digital Health

As digital transformation accelerates, cybersecurity emerged as a critical concern. Dr. Kousar Shah highlighted the increasing vulnerability of healthcare systems to cyberattacks. “Cybersecurity must be integrated into the clinical quality framework of hospitals,” he urged, noting that data breaches can have severe financial and reputational consequences.

Panelists discussed the need for robust cybersecurity measures, including regular training and awareness programs for staff to prevent human error, which is often a leading cause of data breaches. The discussion underscored that safeguarding patient information is not just an IT issue but a responsibility shared by all healthcare professionals.

The Importance of Training and Workforce Adaptation

The session concluded with a discussion on the necessity of workforce adaptation to embrace new technologies. Mr. Pradeep Saha, Group CIO of Artemis Hospitals, emphasized that healthcare professionals must be empowered through comprehensive training programs that demonstrate the value of technology in improving patient care.

“To successfully implement AI and automation, we must create a culture of innovation and acceptance within healthcare organizations,” Saha noted. He also reiterated the importance of designing systems that minimize friction and support

Center of Excellence in Healthcare

In a recent episode of InnoHealth Magazine Podcast, Soumya Singh spoke with Surjeet Thakur, founder and CEO of TrioTree Technologies, about the transformative role technology is playing in healthcare. The conversation highlighted the evolving challenges and opportunities in healthcare accessibility, digitization, and patient care, particularly in India.

The Need for Healthcare Technology in India

Surjeet Thakur’s journey into healthcare technology was rooted in a long-standing passion for both technology and healthcare. With a background in computer science, he initially worked in the IT department of Max Healthcare and later moved to American Hospital Dubai. It was during these years that he began to notice significant gaps in the digitization of healthcare systems, particularly the lack of effective Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems in India.

The problem was clear: many healthcare systems were still using paper records, which led to inefficiencies, errors, and delays in patient care. Surjeet believed that technology could play a crucial role in solving these problems, not just by automating administrative tasks but also by improving the quality of patient care and access to medical information.

Overcoming Resistance to Change in Healthcare

One of the biggest challenges in the adoption of healthcare technology, as Surjeet pointed out, is the resistance from healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses. For many clinicians, technology is seen as an additional burden rather than a helpful tool.

Surjeet explained that it’s less about the technology itself and more about changing the mindset and behavior of healthcare providers. “Doctors will always remain at the center of healthcare delivery, and this is where the challenge begins,” he said. Convincing medical staff to adopt new systems requires showing them how technology can make their jobs easier by streamlining processes like patient record management and reducing the time spent searching for information.

The key is understanding that technology is not just an IT issue but a healthcare issue. If doctors and nurses are onboarded properly, with a focus on how it will ultimately improve patient care, the transition can be smoother.

The Role of Government in Healthcare Digitalization

India’s government has taken important steps to address some of these challenges through initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This initiative aims to centralize Electronic Health Records (EHRs), providing healthcare providers with easy access to patient data across the public and private sectors. The goal is to make healthcare more efficient and to improve the overall quality of care.

Surjeet emphasized that the vast size and diversity of India make healthcare digitalization both a challenge and an opportunity. “We need to ensure there is a central repository for all citizens’ EHRs,” he said. With this system in place, the government can gain valuable insights into the health trends of the population, allowing them to allocate resources more effectively and address public health challenges like chronic diseases, mental health, and preventive care.

However, implementing such a system in a country with diverse healthcare facilities, ranging from large private hospitals to smaller rural clinics, requires careful planning and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Data Security and Privacy: Protecting Patient Information

As more healthcare services move online and patient records become digitized, protecting patient data becomes a critical concern. Surjeet pointed out the importance of both data security and privacy. Data security ensures that patient information is protected from unauthorized access, while privacy ensures that only authorized individuals have access to specific details.

The Indian government has addressed some of these concerns through the Data Protection and Privacy (DPDP) Act, which imposes significant fines on organizations that fail to protect patient data. Surjeet also shared how healthcare technology companies take patient confidentiality seriously, instilling a culture of data protection within their teams.

“We ensure that patient data is secure, and only the right people have access to the right information,” Surjeet explained. “This is crucial not only for compliance but also for maintaining trust in the healthcare system.”

The Potential of AI, Cloud Computing, and Remote Care

As technology continues to evolve, new tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are beginning to play a significant role in healthcare. Surjeet highlighted the growing importance of telemedicine and remote patient care, especially in a country like India, where there is a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals in rural areas.

Telemedicine has been around for decades, but its adoption has increased rapidly in recent years, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the help of digital tools, patients can now receive consultations from doctors remotely, reducing the need for travel and minimizing waiting times.

Surjeet shared how wearable devices like the Apple Watch are being used to monitor chronic conditions like diabetes. “As a diabetic, I use an Apple Watch to track my vitals, and the data syncs directly with my health record,” he said. This kind of remote monitoring allows for continuous care outside of traditional hospital settings, which can lead to better outcomes and fewer hospital visits.

What’s Next for Healthcare in India?

Looking forward, Surjeet is optimistic about the potential for technology to address India’s healthcare challenges. With a population of over 1.4 billion people, the need for accessible and affordable healthcare is more urgent than ever. While technology alone cannot solve all of India’s healthcare issues, it can certainly play a central role in improving efficiency, reducing costs, and making healthcare more equitable.

Surjeet pointed out that healthcare systems need to evolve from being hospital-centric to patient-centric. “Care has to come out of the hospitals and into the hands of the patients,” he said, emphasizing the role of technology in empowering individuals to manage their own health more effectively.

He also stressed that the future of healthcare in India will depend on leveraging technology to bridge the gap between the country’s diverse healthcare needs and its available infrastructure. By adopting innovations like AI, remote patient care, and centralized EHRs, India can build a more sustainable healthcare system that serves everyone, from urban centers to rural villages.

A Call for Awareness and Collaboration

The conversation with Surjeet Thakur highlights that while there are many challenges in healthcare technology, there are also significant opportunities for improvement. From enhancing data security to making healthcare more accessible through telemedicine and AI, the future of healthcare in India is undoubtedly tied to technology.

The key to success will be continued collaboration between healthcare providers, technology companies, and the government to ensure that digital health solutions are implemented effectively and equitably. As we move forward, it is important to stay aware of the potential benefits that these technologies bring to the table and to embrace the changes that are coming to improve healthcare for all.

Shaping the Future of Indian Healthcare: Strategy, Sustainability, and Smart Systems

At the forefront of transforming healthcare delivery in India is a new wave of leadership focused on sustainable systems, strategic innovation, and long-term impact. One such voice is Ankita Agarwal, Vice President of Strategy and Special Projects at Marengo Asia Hospital, whose work is centered on redefining how hospitals operate — not just for today, but for the future.

In a candid exchange at the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, she shared insights into building resilient healthcare ecosystems, integrating artificial intelligence meaningfully, and bridging the urban-rural divide through collaborative approaches.

Redefining Sustainability in Healthcare

Sustainability in healthcare often brings to mind cost-cutting or eco-friendly practices, but the reality goes much deeper. As Ankita explains, it’s about creating systems that endure and deliver quality care independently. “Sustainability means putting in place the right processes, infrastructure, and skilled staff — so that even if we exit a project, the hospital continues delivering high-quality care on its own,” she said.

This approach includes continuous staff training, implementation of standardized clinical protocols, and alignment with global quality benchmarks such as NABH and JCI. The focus is on enabling partner hospitals to become self-reliant, capable of maintaining high standards without constant external support.

Strategic Pillars for Long-Term Impact

To ensure healthcare facilities can operate efficiently and consistently, strategic planning is anchored around four key areas: people, processes, infrastructure, and technology. This translates into:

Training medical staff to handle complex procedures with confidence.

Establishing accreditation through recognized national and international bodies.

Implementing clinical protocols for consistent and safe patient outcomes.

Scaling capabilities in specialized areas to meet growing demand.

Equity in Healthcare: Closing the Urban-Rural Divide

One of the most pressing challenges in Indian healthcare is access — especially in rural and underserved regions. Addressing this, Ankita highlighted the importance of private-public collaboration. “We are open to working with government centers and standalone facilities. Through exposure, training, and knowledge transfer, we can help bring equitable healthcare to underserved regions,” she shared.

Rather than creating dependency, the goal is to empower local teams by upskilling staff and building capacity — ensuring improvements are sustainable over time.

AI in Hospitals: A Collaborative Tool

While artificial intelligence is often seen as a disruptor, in the healthcare context, it’s increasingly being embraced as a powerful support system. “Doctors are welcoming AI because it enhances their productivity,” Ankita noted. Whether it’s expediting diagnostic processes or helping manage high patient volumes, AI is proving to be a valuable ally.

“With validated, clinically approved tools, a doctor who used to see 50 patients a day can now manage 80 — without sacrificing quality,” she explained. In a landscape facing a growing disease burden and aging population, AI helps bridge the gap between demand and available expertise.

Looking Ahead: A Scalable, Resilient Vision

The vision is clear — build healthcare systems that are resilient, scalable, and accessible to all. By focusing on sustainable infrastructure, meaningful tech integration, and inclusive training, this approach is setting a new standard for healthcare delivery.

What emerges is a model rooted in empathy, backed by strategy, and driven by the belief that quality healthcare should be a universal standard, not a privilege.

Tabrez Maner

The field of Radiology is undergoing a seismic shift. With the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, we are witnessing a transformation in how medical imaging is interpreted, reported, and delivered. As global demand for radiology services rises, AI- powered solutions are stepping in to bridge the gap, offering efficiency, accuracy, and scalability like never before and this space is evolving faster than any other domain.

Radiology plays a critical role in healthcare, enabling early disease detection and guiding
clinical decisions. However, this industry is facing critical hurdles such as;

In the United States alone, over 50 million MRI and CT scans are performed annually, leading to backlogs, delayed reporting, and extended patient wait times. As medical imaging technology improves, more scans are being ordered, but radiologist shortages make it difficult to keep up with demand.

A 2024 survey revealed that 44.8% of radiology departments anticipate AI-based
applications will render their duties more clinical, potentially alleviating some workforce pressures however, radiologists are often overburdened, leading to burnout, errors, and inconsistencies in reporting.

Median turnaround time for radiology reports can range from 24 to 72 hours, often delaying critical medical decisions.

Interpretation inconsistencies among radiologists due to fatigue, workload, and
experience level can lead to misdiagnosis or unnecessary follow-ups, increasing healthcare costs and patient anxiety.

AI-powered tools are addressing these challenges by augmenting radiologists’ capabilities, reducing workload, and enhancing diagnostic precision. Some of the key AI applications in radiology include:

1. Automated Image Analysis

AI models are trained to detect abnormalities such as tumors, fractures, hemorrhages, and lung diseases with accuracy comparable to human radiologists. This allows for faster triaging of urgent cases while assisting radiologists in detecting subtle findings that may otherwise be missed.

For example, AI-based tools are being used in detecting early-stage lung cancer by analyzing CT scans and identifying nodules that may require further evaluation. Similarly, AI algorithms have demonstrated remarkable accuracy in detecting breast cancer from mammograms, often identifying tumors earlier than traditional methods.

2. Workflow Optimization

AI-driven solutions help streamline radiology workflows by:

Prioritizing critical cases (e.g., flagging strokes or fractures for immediate attention).

Reducing redundant tasks, such as report structuring and administrative documentation.

Enabling seamless collaboration between radiologists and referring physicians.

Introduction

In the evolving landscape of healthcare, nursing stands as a cornerstone, blending compassion with innovation. Colonel Binu Sharma, Senior Director of Nursing at Max Healthcare, shared her inspiring journey in a recent InnoHealth Magazine podcast. With over 45 years in nursing, she reflected on the profession’s challenges, the importance of leadership, and how technology is shaping modern nursing.

A Journey Rooted in Passion and Perseverance

Born in Mahipalpur, a small village in Delhi, Colonel Sharma’s path to nursing was unconventional. Initially excelling in mathematics, she pursued a career in statistics but soon realized her true calling lay in healthcare. She joined the Military Nursing Services and later the Indian Navy, embarking on a lifelong journey dedicated to patient care and medical leadership.

“My mind was on mathematics, but my heart and soul did not belong there. I didn’t choose nursing; nursing chose me,” she reflected.

Overcoming societal resistance, she defied expectations to become a leading force in healthcare. Her story serves as a testament to the resilience and determination required to break barriers and excel in the nursing profession.

The Role of Compassion and Critical Thinking in Nursing

Nursing is more than a profession—it is a unique combination of art and science. Colonel Sharma emphasized that while knowledge and technical skills are essential, a nurse must also embody empathy, patience, and adaptability.

“Nurses are critical thinkers, decision-makers, and caregivers. They need to understand medical technology, patient conditions, and rapidly changing environments,” she stated.

From handling gunshot wounds in emergency rooms to assisting in childbirth and critical care, a nurse’s role is multifaceted. Nurses must be physically fit, mentally resilient, and equipped to navigate high-stress environments while maintaining emotional balance.

Technology in Nursing: A Game Changer

The integration of technology has revolutionized nursing, improving efficiency, patient monitoring, and medical procedures. Colonel Sharma highlighted how advancements such as AI-driven patient monitoring systems, robotic-assisted procedures, and digital health records are enhancing patient care.

“Nursing digitalization is progressing by leaps and bounds. Today, nurses use apps, tablets, and AI to track patient data and improve clinical efficiency,” she noted.

However, technology alone cannot replace the human touch. The key lies in blending innovation with the fundamental values of care and empathy that define nursing.

Coping with Emotional and Professional Demands

Nursing is emotionally and physically demanding. Young nurses, particularly those new to the field, often experience burnout due to long hours, high-stress situations, and the emotional weight of patient care.

To support mental health and well-being, Colonel Sharma emphasized the need for mentorship programs, stress management strategies, and a focus on work-life balance. Hospitals and healthcare institutions must recognize the importance of providing psychological support to nurses, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested the endurance and resilience of healthcare workers worldwide.

Recognition and the Future of Nursing

Despite their indispensable role, nurses often struggle for recognition and fair compensation. Colonel Sharma believes that recent global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have amplified the visibility and importance of the nursing profession.

“Nurses are no longer just blind followers of orders; they are decision-makers, researchers, and leaders. We now have nursing leaders in boardrooms, influencing healthcare policies and decision-making,” she said.

With increasing empowerment, the future of nursing looks promising. More nurses are pursuing advanced degrees, specializing in critical areas such as oncology and ICU care, and playing a vital role in shaping healthcare innovation.

Conclusion

Colonel Binu Sharma’s journey underscores the essence of nursing—where compassion meets technology to drive impactful healthcare outcomes. As the profession continues to evolve, the fusion of skill, dedication, and digital innovation will ensure that nurses remain at the heart of patient care.

Through continuous learning, technological adaptation, and unwavering commitment, the next generation of nurses can look forward to a future where they are recognized not only as caregivers but also as pioneers in modern healthcare.

Strict Monitoring of Healthcare Funds is crucial to ensure that the allocated budget reaches hospitals and is used effectively.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) can accelerate healthcare advancements by leveraging private sector expertise and innovation.

Preventive Healthcare Campaigns must be emphasized to reduce the burden of chronic diseases through awareness and lifestyle interventions.

A Message to Healthcare Professionals and Society

Dr. Dhillon concluded the discussion by emphasizing the importance of empathy in the medical profession. He encouraged healthcare professionals to prioritize patient well-being, serve the underprivileged, and work towards an inclusive healthcare system. His message was clear: A strong, ethical, and service-oriented medical community can transform the nation’s health infrastructure.

Conclusion

The conversation with Dr. Brijendra Singh Dhillon highlights the urgent need for reforms in rural healthcare, the integration of AI-driven solutions, and the importance of ethical governance. With a collaborative effort between the government, medical professionals, and technology innovators, India can move toward a stronger, more efficient, and accessible healthcare system.

By improving healthcare access and addressing key challenges, we can pave the way for a healthier and more equitable future for all.

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, we had the privilege of sitting down with Professor Lavanya Nandan, Principal of Nightingale Institute of Nursing, Noida. Our conversation revolved around how technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the nursing profession.

A Platform for Nursing to Shine

Professor Nandan began by expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to discuss nursing on such a prominent platform. She emphasized how crucial it is for nurses to be recognized in the broader spectrum of healthcare, alongside management and IT professionals.

“It’s wonderful to see nursing being acknowledged as an evolving profession. This platform allows us to address challenges, inclusivity, and progress in the field,” she said.

AI & Technology: Challenge or Opportunity?

When asked about the challenges nurses face with AI and rapidly changing technology, Professor Nandan had an interesting perspective.

“I wouldn’t call it a challenge,” she explained. “Rather, it’s an opportunity we have yet to fully explore. AI, virtual reality, and simulation-based learning are tools that can enhance our profession. We’ve already started integrating them into our curriculum and professional training.”

She pointed out that many corporate hospitals have already embraced digital documentation, replacing traditional paper records. This shift makes nurses more technologically competent and improves patient care.

“In the next five years, AI will be an integral part of nursing. We’re already conducting virtual seminars and on-site workshops to train nurses in these advancements. For example, I recently attended a one-day digital health workshop in Mumbai specifically for nurses. The industry is actively preparing for this transition.”

How is Nursing Adapting to AI?

The conversation then turned to how the nursing industry is implementing AI and tech training.

Professor Nandan reassured that change is already underway. Training programs are now embedded in both educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

“A great initiative has come from the Indian Nursing Council in collaboration with IIT Raipur. They’ve introduced a six-month certification program where IT professionals train nurses in healthcare technology at a very affordable cost. This kind of partnership is exactly what we need to move forward.”

Additionally, telehealth, robotic-assisted surgeries, wearable health gadgets, and digital data collection are already becoming part of nursing practice. Even medical equipment is increasingly embedded with AI, making it essential for nurses to understand and operate them effectively.

Simulation Labs: The Future of Nursing Education

One of the most exciting developments is the rise of simulation-based learning.

“In India, we’re seeing the growth of simulation labs where nurses can practice on AI-powered mannequins. This allows them to refine their skills in a safe, controlled environment before working with real patients,” she shared.

Final Thoughts

As we wrapped up our conversation, Professor Nandan expressed her confidence in nurses adapting to the digital revolution.

“I don’t see this as a challenge but as an innovation. With continuous training, collaboration, and willingness to learn, we can enhance the quality of nursing and patient care.”

It was truly inspiring to hear her insights. As the healthcare landscape evolves, one thing is certain: nurses are not just keeping up with technology – they are leading the way.
