India is a diverse country, whether the diversity is in culture, religion, eating habits, or exercising habits. Earlier, there was this notion that if you eat healthy and exercise daily, your heart will stay healthy. The heart is an organ that needs to beat continuously so that every organ can get oxygenated blood to function. To let it function properly, one needs to take care of it. The effects of your daily lifestyle have a major impact on your heart, and along with that, heredity and environmental factors play a role in heart health. If you compare the day-to-day lives of 21st and 20th-century individuals, a massive difference in their eating and working habits will be inevitable. The difference in time showed the fast-paced life evolution where exercise habits have also changed. There were gyms earlier as well, but for boxers or sports people. Common people’s physical labor was cycling or walking to anywhere they went.

Most of them didn’t have machinery such as bikes, cars, etc. But physical exercise is not the only way to protect your heart; it involves multiple factors. Let’s see what the other factors are. One of them is eating healthy, which is another way to reduce consumption of processed food, less sugar, and less saturated fats or trans fats, as these will gradually lead to increased obesity, blockages in heart vessels, and the heart having to struggle for every beat, eventually leading to a heart attack.

The environment also has its effects on overall health as well as on heart health. Most people are aware of these facts but choose to ignore them. Some do care; they eat healthy and they workout, but what went wrong was that they got a heart attack. Sometimes, when everything is right, there is something wrong hiding behind that right. Changes in the working lifestyle and trying to be ahead of the competitive nature of today’s generation have left no space to relax and calm down. This not only affects their health but also their relationships with family and loved ones.

Thus, a lot of emotions are piling up in the form of stress, which is one of the major reasons for heart attacks in people who have a balanced diet and exercise. Not only that, but stress – smoking and alcohol consumption—and lack of sleep also contribute to it. For adults, at least – 8 hours of sound sleep is required.

“Eat right, sleep tight, and exercise light” should be the new life mantra for this generation”. Apart from this yearly checkup of your heart, invest in certain basic tests like an electrocardiogram, an echocardiogram, and a stress test (exercise tolerance test (ETT) or treadmill test) and certain advanced tests like cardiac CT, chest x- ray and Thallium scan (myocardial perfusion scintigraphy) as per your physician’s recommendations on the basis of your blood test and symptoms, if any. So, you can make it a habit to visit your physician once or twice a year to keep up with your heart health.

This discovery suggests we should change public health messages. Instead of pushing intense daily exercise for everyone, we should focus on personalized, moderate, and varied physical activities. It encourages us to tune into our bodies, to find equilibrium between activity and rest, and to recognize that health includes physical, mental, and emotional aspects. By doing this, we aim for a healthier life that reduces risks and embraces overall well-being. It also shows how important
scientific research is in updating our knowledge about what’s best for our health. “Fit to Fail” reminds us that real health is not simple.

From hydration and electrolyte balance to weight loss and skin health, coconut water has a wide range of transformative powers that can improve your quality of life.

Coconut water has gained popularity in recent years as a refreshing and nutritious beverage. This clear liquid is found inside young, green coconuts and is packed with essential nutrients that can benefit your overall health and well-being. In this article, we will explore the nutritional composition of coconut water and delve into its various health benefits. From hydration and electrolyte balance to weight loss and skin health, coconut water has a wide range of transformative powers that can improve your quality of life.

Introduction to Coconut Water

Coconut water is the clear, slightly sweet liquid found inside coconuts. It is different from coconut milk, which is made from the flesh of mature coconuts. Coconut water is a natural source of hydration and has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions. With its rich mineral content and refreshing taste, coconut water has become a popular beverage choice worldwide.

Nutritional Composition of Coconut Water

Coconut water is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients. It is low in calories and fat, making it a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. Coconut water is rich in electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which are crucial for maintaining proper hydration and supporting various bodily functions. Additionally, it contains vitamins C and B-complex, as well as amino acids and antioxidants that contribute to its health-promoting properties.

Coconut water is also a good source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and promotes a healthy gut. It is important to note that the nutritional composition of coconut water can vary depending on factors such as the age of the coconut and the region it is grown in. Nevertheless, coconut water consistently provides a range of essential nutrients that are beneficial to your overall well-being.

Health Benefits of Coconut Water

Coconut Water for Hydration and Electrolyte Balance

One of the primary benefits of coconut water is its ability to hydrate the body. It is a natural isotonic beverage, meaning it has a similar electrolyte balance to that of our body fluids. This makes coconut water an excellent choice for rehydrating after physical activity or during hot weather. The natural sugars in coconut water, along with its electrolyte content, help replenish lost fluids and restore the body’s hydration levels.

Coconut Water for Weight Loss and Metabolism

If you’re looking to shed a few pounds, coconut water can be a valuable addition to your weight loss journey. Not only is it low in calories, but it also contains enzymes that aid in digestion and boost metabolism. The fiber content in coconut water promotes a feeling of fullness, reducing cravings and overeating. Additionally, the natural sugars in coconut water provide a healthier alternative to sugary beverages, helping to cut down on unnecessary calories.

Coconut water also has a high water content, which can promote hydration and aid in the elimination of toxins from the body. When your body is properly hydrated, your metabolism functions optimally, allowing for efficient calorie burning and weight management.

Heart health

The potassium content in coconut water helps maintain healthy heart function by regulating blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, its high concentration of magnesium may help lower cholesterol levels and improve circulation

Natural Hangover Remedy

Coconut Water is often used as a natural remedy for hang-overs due to its hydrating properties and ability to replenish essential electrolytes lost during excessive alcohol consumption. It works wonders to alleviate headaches, nausea and fatigue associated with alcohol-induced dehydration.

Coconut Water for Skin Health and Beauty

In addition to its internal health benefits, coconut water can also work wonders for your skin. Its hydrating properties help to moisturize the skin from within, promoting a healthy and glowing complexion. Coconut water is rich in cytokinins, which are plant hormones that have been shown to have anti-aging effects on human cells. These compounds can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, giving your skin a more youthful and radiant appearance.

Furthermore, the vitamins and antioxidants present in coconut water can protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals, environmental pollutants, and harmful UV rays. Regular consumption of coconut water may contribute to a clearer complexion, improved skin elasticity, and a more even skin tone.

Coconut Water for Digestion and Gut Health

Maintaining a healthy digestive system is essential for overall well-being. Coconut water contains bioactive enzymes that aid in digestion and promote a healthy gut. These enzymes help break down food more efficiently, allowing for better nutrient absorption and reducing the likelihood of digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and constipation.

The fiber content in coconut water also supports a healthy digestive system. Dietary fiber adds bulk to the stool, promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. Additionally, coconut water can help soothe the digestive tract and reduce inflammation, making it beneficial for individuals with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Coconut Water for Cardiovascular Health

Coconut water can also be added to various recipes, such as soups, curries, and desserts, to enhance flavor and provide added nutrition.

Maintaining a healthy heart is crucial for overall well-being. Coconut water can contribute to cardiovascular health due to its potassium content. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium in the body. Consuming coconut water regularly can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Furthermore, coconut water has been found to have cholesterol-lowering effects. It contains compounds that promote the production of HDL (good) cholesterol while reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. By improving cholesterol ratios, coconut water can support a healthy heart and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

How to Incorporate Coconut Water into Your Diet?

Incorporating coconut water into your diet is easy and enjoyable. You can enjoy it on its own as a refreshing beverage or use it as a base for smoothies and shakes. Coconut water can also be added to various recipes, such as soups, curries, and desserts, to enhance flavor and provide added nutrition. Additionally, it can be used as a natural sports drink to replenish electrolytes after exercise or physical activity.

When purchasing coconut water, opt for brands that offer 100% pure coconut water without any added sugars or artificial additives. Fresh coconut water from young coconuts is considered the best option, but packaged coconut water is also a convenient choice. Be sure to check the label for any additional ingredients or preservatives.

Precautions and Considerations When Consuming Coconut Water

While coconut water is generally safe for consumption, there are a few precautions and considerations to keep in mind. If you have a known allergy to coconuts, it’s important to avoid coconut water as it may trigger an allergic reaction. Additionally, individuals with kidney problems or those on a low-potassium diet should consult their healthcare provider before consuming large quantities of coconut water.

It’s also worth noting that coconut water should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment or medication. While it offers numerous health benefits, it is not a cure-all solution for any specific condition. If you have any underlying health concerns or are taking medication, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle. Whether for athletes, health-conscious individuals, or those seeking a natural remedy, coconut water is a refreshing solution.

The Transformative Power of Coconut Water for Overall Well-being

By incorporating coconut water into your daily routine, you can reap the rewards of its various health benefits. Whether you’re looking to improve your digestion, boost your metabolism, or enhance your skin’s radiance, coconut water can be a natural and effective solution. So, why not give it a try and experience the transformative power of coconut water for yourself?

Of course, one should follow a doctor’s advice for a lifestyle change. In the real world though, you look longingly at those French fries and convince yourself a few wouldn’t harm. Or you hit the snooze button and tell yourself, I will go for that long run tomorrow. And on and on you go, till your next visit to the Principal’s office, aka your doctor, where you hope miraculously for an improved report card. You are not alone my friend. Sticking to a regime requires discipline or an occasional reminder from your wellwishers (if you were me). A sight towards your goal and how far you have come in conquering it help matters further. Thankfully, plenty of new-age start-ups are here to make diabetes management and lifestyle changes easier.

Take for instance Life In Control and Wellthy Therapeutics. These digital platforms connect patients with doctors and coaches and provide personalized care in terms of diet and exercise plan. Users can create long-term health goals, follow-up daily tasks and keep tabs on their health profile including HbA1C and glucose levels, track medicines intake and understand how their daily routine affect these measures. These start-ups also give doctors the flexibility of reaching out to patients outside their clinical hours as well as to create and coach them on their personalized care plans. In the language of numbers, Life In Control has over 100 doctors on the platform and appears to have helped over a lakh patient with their app. Wellthy Therapeutics took the approach of a pilot program with diabetic patients and claims to have helped reduce both HbA1C levels by a little over 1% and an average weight reduction of 3.4 kgs over 16 weeks. It also got an endorsement by Asia’s largest diabetes association, Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India. Both the apps are available for download on Android and iOS platforms.

Adding to the growing list of startups are those that detect blood glucose and connect directly to your smartphone. BioSense SYNC, for instance, is a compact Glucometer with Bluetooth connectivity to a user’s phone. It provides a detailed analysis of blood sugar data collected over a number of days. Similar to other diabetes management apps, a user can map their glucose data with their eating and exercising habits. Taking these interventions a step further, the start-up BeatO not only provides a smartphone Glucometer but also a range of diabetic friendly food products to munch upon. Patients can order medicines, sync their fitness devices and count calories on food items consumed. As of today, BeatO has served more than 25000 customers with a daily user add-on of 75-100. Most of these diabetes management apps can instantly connect a patient to a diabetic coach in case the sugar levels are off, and alert the patient’s family as well on concerning trends.

Complimenting these health management gurus, patients are also likely to benefit if there were devices providing at home diagnosis for diabetic complications, such as neuropathy, kidney malfunction or diabetic retinopathy. Scintiglo by Cutting Edge Medical Devices, Anupath by PathShodh and Sparsha by Yostra Labs have created Point of Care (PoC) tests to detect the first two complications. Scintiglo is a small handheld device that detects urinary proteins (should be trace levels in a healthy individual) at a low cost with remarkable accuracy and connects to a smartphone through a custom app. Anupath uses unique test strips for detection of specific biomarkers of diabetes, while also eliminating the need of usual sample preparation that one sees in clinics. Patients can get a comprehensive reading of their plasma and urine protein levels, HbA1c levels blood glucose and hemoglobin. While Sparsha, as the name suggests, focuses on touch-based tests that can diagnose diabetic peripheral neuropathy and send reports via users’ smartphone. Funded by the Department of Biotechnology grant (BIRAC), these start-ups focus on low-cost solutions, so an average user can save money on constant check-ups. Low costs also allow these start-ups to cater to rural segments of India, where a healthcare worker can refer patients to tertiary hospitals based on initial reports by these devices.

The complication of retinopathy, as mentioned above, relates to the slowly progressive disease of the eye and is one of the leading causes of blindness in diabetic patients. This segment is addressed by start-ups like ChironX and Artelus that use artificial intelligence to detect or monitor diabetic retinopathy risks from retinal image scans. Both the start-ups have achieved high accuracy of detection (over 95%) while the technology of AI confers an easy benefit of scanning retinas at a much faster speed to doctors and hospitals. Artelus also boasts to have saved over 3900 eyes so far from diabetic complications.

Given the burden of diabetes in every aspect of life (behavioral, physiological and financial), being handheld into recovery could be motivating for many patients. For maximum impact, we need to reach the furthest demographic corners of India, as diabetes has a growing prevalence in all sectors of the country. Infact, why wait for diabetes to knock at your door? One can also mitigate pre-diabetic conditions or reduce the chances of developing diabetes later in life. These start-ups aim to provide that ecosystem, where a patient can be led into an improved, healthy lifestyle at minimal costs. And just as it is heartening to see the growing awareness of Indians towards their health, it is equally imperative that these solutions are also as democratic as possible. Importantly in a booming start-up scenario, maintaining data integrity, complete transparency between doctors, patients and companies as well as strict adherence to ethical standards would go a long way in ensuring patient trust in this system.

A recent study has found that about 10% of school children in Bengaluru are obese. 13.8% children are at risk of contracting lifestyle disease in adulthood with waistlines which are more than half their height.

School-based screening of 104,105 children studying in 138 private schools has revealed some alarming trends in school students in Bengaluru. The study was conducted by AddressHealth, the provider of health services in schools for children in India. The survey data was compiled over the current academic year and revealed a significant degree of malnutrition (both over and undernutrition) among children – with 9.2% of children being obese and another 13.7% children falling into the overweight category (overnutrition) while about 8.5% of them are too thin for their age (undernutrition).

Also Read: Indoor Lifestyle Impacts the Diversity of Bugs

Apart from this, 28.6% of school children have dental caries (cavities) while 15.1% have newly detected/ worsening vision problems. In addition, more than 200 children had previously undetected cardiac murmurs, and 70 children had previously undetected hearing defects. Commenting on the survey results Dr. Anand Lakshman, Founder and CEO, AddressHealth, said, “Children are increasingly vulnerable due to a variety of lifestyle. And environmental factors such as the proliferation of fast food options, lack of physical activity, too much screen time etc.

We believe Contracting lifestyle disease in adulthood, reveals a recent study By InnoHealth Editorial Team 40 Volume 3 | Issue 3 | July-September 2018 Key findings of the survey :

• About 10% of primary school children are obese. Further 13% of children overweight and 9.4% of those in middle and secondary school are too thin;
• Vision problems are more common among children in the primary and secondary age group with 1 in 7 and 1 in 5 children affected, respectively;
• Dental caries has emerged as the most neglected chronic condition among children; and
• Nearly 8% of children have clinical signs of anemia

Schools and parents/guardians should place adequate emphasis on children’s health and well-being. Beyond the usual vaccines and episodes of sickness, failing which non-communicable diseases will only become more common in the younger generation. The times are changing, and new age problems need to be addressed proactively and continuously. The data from our mental health program also suggests a moderate risk of mental health conditions amongst school children such as emotional difficulties, behavioral issues and lack of social skills”.

“Schools are not just centers for imparting formal education but also institutions that influence values, beliefs and importantly practices. A healthy lifestyle including hygiene habits must be inculcated during childhood. These positive behaviors will last through to adulthood and for the rest of a person’s life. Children are naturally inquisitive and keen learners. They can thus become both the beneficiaries and the agents of change in the family,” added Dr. Lakshman.

AddressHealth has conducted surveys in 177 schools covering 1,26,467 children across 4 Indian cities including Bengaluru, and data points to similar trends across cities with a high likelihood of chronic diseases in adulthood.

The number of children covered by the surveys over the last 12 months. It includes 1,04,105 children in Bengaluru, 652 in Delhi, 18,422 in Hyderabad, and 3,288 in Pune. The prevalence of various conditions across these four cities is as follows: obese as per BMI for age standards (8.8%), over-weight but not obese (12.6%), low BMI (8.5%), risk of lifestyle diseases [Waist/Height Ratio>0.5] (14.6%), vision problems (14.6%), and dental caries (29.7%). About 219 and 9101 children are at risk of potential heart defects and clinical anemia, respectively.

Obesity is seen across income groups. But rising rapidly in the schools catering to higher income groups and primary and secondary school children. There is an increasing trend of the risk of lifestyle disease, due to reduced physical activity, which is reflected in the significant percentage of children with a higher than recommended waist-to-height ratio.

AddressHealth’s school health services are designed by a team of pediatricians, public health experts, child psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists and other health professionals. The services include Annual Health check-ups for children; Medical Room / Tele-infirmary; School Emotional/Mental Wellbeing Services (Nurturing Schools Program); and Health Education with Workbooks (Standard 1st to 8th). Currently AddressHealth’s services encompass ~ 200,000 children in over 200 schools in Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad & Pune The AddressHealth School Health Program is based on WHO guidelines for schools.

It is believed that by 2030, India alone will account for 60 percent of the world’s cardiac patients, nearly four times its share of the world’s population. The major reason for these alarming statistics is lack of awareness towards- ‘healthy’ lifestyle and the lack of knowledge of few simple steps that can be taken during emergency or before reaching the hospital.

Out of the people who die from heart attack, about 50 percent die within an hour of their initial symptoms before they reach the hospital. The chances of survival of the victim can increase significantly if he is provided Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately. Hence, people present at the scene can help avert the risk of death by proving CPR promptly to the victim.

Providing BLS and CPR during the golden hour can help in preventing pre hospital deaths from injuries as well as heart attack if there is a delay in receiving hospital treatment or medical care. Mostly, the steps we take in haste while attending to an emergency, makes a deep-rooted impact in saving the life of the patient. Thus, it is vital for all to learn the BLS and CPR techniques, so that we can take the right measures when required.

These are simple steps like early recognition and initiating chest compression in cardiac arrest or protecting cervical spine with c-collar in road traffic accident victims and for this you don’t need to be an expert in medicine to take these lifesaving steps. Therefore, CPR and BLS should be made mandatory in secondary level of education and to all public service job holders as the chances of survival of the victim increase double fold if appropriate emergency medical care is provided immediately.

Time is the essence while treating a heart attack and cardiac arrest victims. “When the heart stops beating, blood flow to the body organs ceases. Of all the organs, brain is affected first. People become unconscious within 15 -20 seconds after the heart stops and chances of brain recovery decreases with time so much so that irreversible brain damage is common if circulation is not restored within 5 minutes of cardiac arrest. The need of the hour is to train common people to do CPR and BLS before the victim reaches the hospital. This training will help them to learn special skills required to deal with heart related emergencies. Skills to perform CPR through chest compressions, maintaining victims breathing by providing appropriate rescue breaths, can greatly improve the chances of survival of these unfortunate people.

You too can save a life. And for this you don’t need a medical degree.
