In a recent episode of InnoHealth Magazine Podcast, Soumya Singh spoke with Surjeet Thakur, founder and CEO of TrioTree Technologies, about the transformative role technology is playing in healthcare. The conversation highlighted the evolving challenges and opportunities in healthcare accessibility, digitization, and patient care, particularly in India.

The Need for Healthcare Technology in India

Surjeet Thakur’s journey into healthcare technology was rooted in a long-standing passion for both technology and healthcare. With a background in computer science, he initially worked in the IT department of Max Healthcare and later moved to American Hospital Dubai. It was during these years that he began to notice significant gaps in the digitization of healthcare systems, particularly the lack of effective Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems in India.

The problem was clear: many healthcare systems were still using paper records, which led to inefficiencies, errors, and delays in patient care. Surjeet believed that technology could play a crucial role in solving these problems, not just by automating administrative tasks but also by improving the quality of patient care and access to medical information.

Overcoming Resistance to Change in Healthcare

One of the biggest challenges in the adoption of healthcare technology, as Surjeet pointed out, is the resistance from healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses. For many clinicians, technology is seen as an additional burden rather than a helpful tool.

Surjeet explained that it’s less about the technology itself and more about changing the mindset and behavior of healthcare providers. “Doctors will always remain at the center of healthcare delivery, and this is where the challenge begins,” he said. Convincing medical staff to adopt new systems requires showing them how technology can make their jobs easier by streamlining processes like patient record management and reducing the time spent searching for information.

The key is understanding that technology is not just an IT issue but a healthcare issue. If doctors and nurses are onboarded properly, with a focus on how it will ultimately improve patient care, the transition can be smoother.

The Role of Government in Healthcare Digitalization

India’s government has taken important steps to address some of these challenges through initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This initiative aims to centralize Electronic Health Records (EHRs), providing healthcare providers with easy access to patient data across the public and private sectors. The goal is to make healthcare more efficient and to improve the overall quality of care.

Surjeet emphasized that the vast size and diversity of India make healthcare digitalization both a challenge and an opportunity. “We need to ensure there is a central repository for all citizens’ EHRs,” he said. With this system in place, the government can gain valuable insights into the health trends of the population, allowing them to allocate resources more effectively and address public health challenges like chronic diseases, mental health, and preventive care.

However, implementing such a system in a country with diverse healthcare facilities, ranging from large private hospitals to smaller rural clinics, requires careful planning and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Data Security and Privacy: Protecting Patient Information

As more healthcare services move online and patient records become digitized, protecting patient data becomes a critical concern. Surjeet pointed out the importance of both data security and privacy. Data security ensures that patient information is protected from unauthorized access, while privacy ensures that only authorized individuals have access to specific details.

The Indian government has addressed some of these concerns through the Data Protection and Privacy (DPDP) Act, which imposes significant fines on organizations that fail to protect patient data. Surjeet also shared how healthcare technology companies take patient confidentiality seriously, instilling a culture of data protection within their teams.

“We ensure that patient data is secure, and only the right people have access to the right information,” Surjeet explained. “This is crucial not only for compliance but also for maintaining trust in the healthcare system.”

The Potential of AI, Cloud Computing, and Remote Care

As technology continues to evolve, new tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are beginning to play a significant role in healthcare. Surjeet highlighted the growing importance of telemedicine and remote patient care, especially in a country like India, where there is a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals in rural areas.

Telemedicine has been around for decades, but its adoption has increased rapidly in recent years, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the help of digital tools, patients can now receive consultations from doctors remotely, reducing the need for travel and minimizing waiting times.

Surjeet shared how wearable devices like the Apple Watch are being used to monitor chronic conditions like diabetes. “As a diabetic, I use an Apple Watch to track my vitals, and the data syncs directly with my health record,” he said. This kind of remote monitoring allows for continuous care outside of traditional hospital settings, which can lead to better outcomes and fewer hospital visits.

What’s Next for Healthcare in India?

Looking forward, Surjeet is optimistic about the potential for technology to address India’s healthcare challenges. With a population of over 1.4 billion people, the need for accessible and affordable healthcare is more urgent than ever. While technology alone cannot solve all of India’s healthcare issues, it can certainly play a central role in improving efficiency, reducing costs, and making healthcare more equitable.

Surjeet pointed out that healthcare systems need to evolve from being hospital-centric to patient-centric. “Care has to come out of the hospitals and into the hands of the patients,” he said, emphasizing the role of technology in empowering individuals to manage their own health more effectively.

He also stressed that the future of healthcare in India will depend on leveraging technology to bridge the gap between the country’s diverse healthcare needs and its available infrastructure. By adopting innovations like AI, remote patient care, and centralized EHRs, India can build a more sustainable healthcare system that serves everyone, from urban centers to rural villages.

A Call for Awareness and Collaboration

The conversation with Surjeet Thakur highlights that while there are many challenges in healthcare technology, there are also significant opportunities for improvement. From enhancing data security to making healthcare more accessible through telemedicine and AI, the future of healthcare in India is undoubtedly tied to technology.

The key to success will be continued collaboration between healthcare providers, technology companies, and the government to ensure that digital health solutions are implemented effectively and equitably. As we move forward, it is important to stay aware of the potential benefits that these technologies bring to the table and to embrace the changes that are coming to improve healthcare for all.

At the InnoHealth Conference 2024, host Mercilina had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Adil Khan Yusuf Zai, a visionary healthcare entrepreneur reshaping how India approaches patient care. Though trained as a medical doctor, Dr. Adil chose a different path—leveraging technology to create widespread, meaningful impact in the healthcare industry.

From Medicine to Innovation

“I’m a registered medical practitioner,” Dr. Adil began, “but I realized early in med school that my true calling was in technology.” This realization set him on an extraordinary journey, leading him to pursue a master’s degree in health tech innovation and entrepreneurship at Stanford University. After successfully launching and exiting a medical device startup and gaining experience as a product manager in two companies, Dr. Adil is now focused on his dream project: building India’s first healthcare super app.

Addressing Gaps in the Patient Journey

Dr. Adil’s startup aims to provide comprehensive, personalized care that extends beyond hospital walls. “The patient journey doesn’t start at the hospital, nor does it end there,” he explained. Recognizing this, his team is developing a tech platform that curates individualized care plans for patients, offering support before and after surgery or hospitalization.

What sets their solution apart? All services are provided cashlessly through the app—India’s first out-of-hospital care platform to offer this. It’s a bold value proposition aimed at making healthcare more accessible, convenient, and affordable.

India vs. Global Healthcare Systems

Despite studying and working in the U.S., Dr. Adil holds Indian healthcare in high regard. “Trust me, the U.S. healthcare system isn’t as good as you might think,” he stated. “It’s exorbitantly expensive and entirely insurance-dependent.” While India has its own challenges, he believes it is fertile ground for health tech innovation, with abundant problems to solve and immense potential to scale meaningful solutions.

The Role of AI and the Rural-Urban Divide

When asked about integrating AI in healthcare, Dr. Adil pointed out that the technology is still maturing. “AI won’t replace doctors—it should augment them,” he emphasized. Challenges persist, especially with skepticism from both doctors and patients, but he’s optimistic that time and education will ease this transition.

Surprisingly, he also noted that technology adoption in India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is outpacing urban centers. Thanks to affordable internet access and a hunger for quality healthcare, rural areas are proving to be fertile ground for digital health solutions.

A Vision of the Future

Dr. Adil envisions a future where healthcare returns to its roots—within the home. “A hundred years ago, doctors used to visit homes. I believe we’re heading back in that direction, but powered by technology,” he said. With remote monitoring tools, smart sensors, and predictive AI, the majority of care could soon be delivered in the comfort of one’s own home.

A Message for Aspiring Change-Makers

Dr. Adil ended the conversation with a heartfelt message: “If you’re searching for a purpose, healthcare is soul-fulfilling. People will always need it, and it’s one of the few industries where your work can truly change lives.” He encouraged young innovators to explore the sector and reach out to him on LinkedIn if they’re passionate about making a difference.

At the 2024 InnoHEALTH Conference, innovation met inspiration as Dr. Amit Raj, a passionate healthcare leader and digital health advocate, shared his journey, insights, and vision for transforming India’s healthcare landscape. In an engaging conversation on the InnoHEALTH Magazine podcast, he opened up about the lessons learned from his mentor, the reality of healthcare gaps, and the role of passion and collaboration in driving meaningful change.

Mentorship, Mission, and the Power of Belief
He began by paying tribute to his mentor Dr. V.K. Singh who recognized his potential early on. It was at a CII conference in Delhi where he was first encouraged to speak publicly about his work—an invitation that changed the course of his career.
“He said, ‘I want you here, Amit.’ There were no questions after that,” he recalled. “His aura was commanding. His belief in me changed everything.”
This mentorship instilled in him a foundational belief: follow your instincts, chase your dreams, and never look back if your heart is in the right place.

Innovation Starts on the Ground
At the core of his philosophy is a bottom-up approach to innovation—learning directly from frontline healthcare workers. “The real gaps are seen by those on the ground—doctors, paramedics, support staff,” he emphasized. Innovation, according to him, is about listening to the unsung heroes of the system, not just developing high-tech tools.
He shared a simple yet powerful example: a hospital receptionist who deals with a wide range of patient queries every day. “She’ll tell you exactly what she needs to do her job better. That’s where innovation begins.”

Borrowing Wisdom from Other Industries
He also advocated for looking beyond healthcare for solutions. Drawing inspiration from a session with Professor Venkat of IIM, he realized that sectors like banking and telecommunications often develop technologies that can be adapted to health services.
“Industry-driven solutions aren’t just for one sector. With creative adaptation, they can bridge gaps in healthcare too,” he said.

Passion Over Profit
A recurring message throughout the conversation was the importance of purpose. He warned against jumping into healthcare entrepreneurship just to make money. “If you’re only here to make money, it won’t work. True success is a byproduct of passion and purpose.”
He urged aspiring entrepreneurs to engage deeply with the system, listen, learn, and be driven by a genuine desire to create lasting change.

India as a Global Healthcare Leader

Looking to the future, he painted a hopeful picture. With India’s scale, diversity, and growing healthcare infrastructure, he believes the country is poised to become a global example in healthcare delivery.
“We’re doing a fantastic job. In the next decade or two, India will show the world how it’s done—how to deliver health for all, despite scale and complexity.”
He called for stronger collaboration among industry experts, grassroots workers, and policymakers, stressing the importance of mentorship and community-driven leadership.

Final Words
His insights weren’t just about identifying problems—they were a call to action for people to listen, learn, and innovate with empathy. His vision is clear: by staying grounded, passionate, and collaborative, India can set a new global standard in healthcare.
As he put it, “The solutions are right in front of us. We just need to open our eyes—and our ears.”

Shaping the Future of Indian Healthcare: Strategy, Sustainability, and Smart Systems

At the forefront of transforming healthcare delivery in India is a new wave of leadership focused on sustainable systems, strategic innovation, and long-term impact. One such voice is Ankita Agarwal, Vice President of Strategy and Special Projects at Marengo Asia Hospital, whose work is centered on redefining how hospitals operate — not just for today, but for the future.

In a candid exchange at the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, she shared insights into building resilient healthcare ecosystems, integrating artificial intelligence meaningfully, and bridging the urban-rural divide through collaborative approaches.

Redefining Sustainability in Healthcare

Sustainability in healthcare often brings to mind cost-cutting or eco-friendly practices, but the reality goes much deeper. As Ankita explains, it’s about creating systems that endure and deliver quality care independently. “Sustainability means putting in place the right processes, infrastructure, and skilled staff — so that even if we exit a project, the hospital continues delivering high-quality care on its own,” she said.

This approach includes continuous staff training, implementation of standardized clinical protocols, and alignment with global quality benchmarks such as NABH and JCI. The focus is on enabling partner hospitals to become self-reliant, capable of maintaining high standards without constant external support.

Strategic Pillars for Long-Term Impact

To ensure healthcare facilities can operate efficiently and consistently, strategic planning is anchored around four key areas: people, processes, infrastructure, and technology. This translates into:

Training medical staff to handle complex procedures with confidence.

Establishing accreditation through recognized national and international bodies.

Implementing clinical protocols for consistent and safe patient outcomes.

Scaling capabilities in specialized areas to meet growing demand.

Equity in Healthcare: Closing the Urban-Rural Divide

One of the most pressing challenges in Indian healthcare is access — especially in rural and underserved regions. Addressing this, Ankita highlighted the importance of private-public collaboration. “We are open to working with government centers and standalone facilities. Through exposure, training, and knowledge transfer, we can help bring equitable healthcare to underserved regions,” she shared.

Rather than creating dependency, the goal is to empower local teams by upskilling staff and building capacity — ensuring improvements are sustainable over time.

AI in Hospitals: A Collaborative Tool

While artificial intelligence is often seen as a disruptor, in the healthcare context, it’s increasingly being embraced as a powerful support system. “Doctors are welcoming AI because it enhances their productivity,” Ankita noted. Whether it’s expediting diagnostic processes or helping manage high patient volumes, AI is proving to be a valuable ally.

“With validated, clinically approved tools, a doctor who used to see 50 patients a day can now manage 80 — without sacrificing quality,” she explained. In a landscape facing a growing disease burden and aging population, AI helps bridge the gap between demand and available expertise.

Looking Ahead: A Scalable, Resilient Vision

The vision is clear — build healthcare systems that are resilient, scalable, and accessible to all. By focusing on sustainable infrastructure, meaningful tech integration, and inclusive training, this approach is setting a new standard for healthcare delivery.

What emerges is a model rooted in empathy, backed by strategy, and driven by the belief that quality healthcare should be a universal standard, not a privilege.

Introduction

Healthcare is the backbone of any nation, and ensuring its accessibility to every citizen, especially those in rural areas, is a priority. At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, Dr. Brijendra Singh Dhillon, a distinguished expert in hospital administration, shared his insights on improving healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. With vast experience in managing one of Haryana’s largest hospitals, Dr. Dhillon sheds light on the current gaps in healthcare and the steps required to bridge them effectively.

About Dr. Brajendra Singh Dhillon

Dr. Dhillon’s impressive career spans decades of service in the medical field. Having completed his MBBS from Rohtak Medical College and MD in Hospital Administration from the All India Institute, he currently holds the position of Senior Professional Head of Hospital Administration at Rohtak Medical College, Haryana. Managing a 2,500-bedded hospital that caters to over 10,000 OPD patients daily and 2,000 emergency cases, his role is crucial in the seamless functioning of one of the largest healthcare institutions in the region.

A Tribute to Dr. V.K. Singh: A Mentor and Visionary

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Dhillon paid tribute to his mentor, Dr. V.K. Singh, describing him as an intelligent, kind-hearted, and inspirational leader who guided his students with dedication. Dr. Singh’s ability to speak eloquently for hours on any topic and his deep knowledge left a lasting impact on those he mentored. His legacy continues to influence medical professionals like Dr. Dhillon, inspiring them to strive for excellence in healthcare management.

Challenges in Rural Healthcare and the Role of Technology

One of the most pressing concerns in India’s healthcare landscape is the lack of proper medical facilities in rural areas. According to Dr. Dhillon, rural healthcare systems often suffer due to inadequate staffing, lack of medical equipment, and poor infrastructure. He emphasized that strengthening Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and Community Health Centers (CHCs) is essential for reducing the burden on tertiary hospitals.

Key areas for improvement in rural healthcare include:

Deploying More Healthcare Professionals – Many PHCs lack qualified doctors and nurses, leading to an over-reliance on urban medical centers.

Upgrading Medical Equipment – Basic diagnostic tools such as X-ray machines, ultrasound devices, and dental chairs should be standard at PHCs.

Improving Doctor’s Living Quarters – Providing better facilities for healthcare staff in rural areas will encourage professionals to serve in these regions.

Strengthening Ambulance Services – Efficient emergency transportation can significantly improve maternal health outcomes and trauma care.

Leveraging AI and Technology in Healthcare

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technological advancements can revolutionize healthcare by improving efficiency and patient outcomes. However, integrating these advancements in rural areas remains a challenge due to infrastructure constraints and financial limitations. Dr. Dhillon recommends the following steps to enhance the adoption of technology in healthcare:

Investing in Telemedicine – Remote consultations can help bridge the gap between urban specialists and rural patients.

Digital Health Records – Streamlining patient data management can improve diagnosis accuracy and reduce redundancy in treatment.

AI-Based Diagnostics – AI-driven tools can assist in the early detection of diseases such as diabetes, tuberculosis, and cardiovascular conditions.

Learning from Developed Countries: What India Can Do Better

As a developing country, India has the opportunity to learn from global healthcare models and adapt best practices. Dr. Dhillon believes that the key to improving healthcare lies in honest governance, efficient resource allocation, and transparency in medical funding. He suggests that:

Strict Monitoring of Healthcare Funds is crucial to ensure that the allocated budget reaches hospitals and is used effectively.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) can accelerate healthcare advancements by leveraging private sector expertise and innovation.

Preventive Healthcare Campaigns must be emphasized to reduce the burden of chronic diseases through awareness and lifestyle interventions.

A Message to Healthcare Professionals and Society

Dr. Dhillon concluded the discussion by emphasizing the importance of empathy in the medical profession. He encouraged healthcare professionals to prioritize patient well-being, serve the underprivileged, and work towards an inclusive healthcare system. His message was clear: A strong, ethical, and service-oriented medical community can transform the nation’s health infrastructure.

Conclusion

The conversation with Dr. Brijendra Singh Dhillon highlights the urgent need for reforms in rural healthcare, the integration of AI-driven solutions, and the importance of ethical governance. With a collaborative effort between the government, medical professionals, and technology innovators, India can move toward a stronger, more efficient, and accessible healthcare system.

By improving healthcare access and addressing key challenges, we can pave the way for a healthier and more equitable future for all.

Q. Being the architect of Sustainable Development Goals, are you happy with its implementation and impact it has created globally?

I am very pleased and excited by the global acceptance of the SDGs across governments, businesses, and civil society. Yet, actual implementation lags far behind our aspirations and needs. In other words, the big challenge is aligning our plans and actions with the goals. For this we need planning, partnerships, and financial resources in budgets and business investments.

Q. As the world’s most renowned economist, what do you think should be India’s road map to achieve Sustainable Development Goals?

India should pursue the SDGs through six main transformations. First, quality education for all, based on expanded budgets for education at the Union and State levels. Second, quality healthcare for all, similarly based on expanded healthcare budgets at the Union and State levels. Third, decarbonisation of energy, by eliminating the use of coal, oil, and natural gas, and shifting to solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy. This will not only contribute to ending global warming but will also clean the air and save millions of lives. Fourth, sustainable land use by restoring degraded lands, protecting endangered species, and ending deforestation. Fifth, investing in sustainable cities, through all-electric vehicles, green spaces, walking areas, and affordable housing. Sixth, being the world leader in using Information and Communications Technologies (the digital revolution) for sustainable development.

Q. Countries have adopted various healthcare financing models as per their needs like Beveridge, Bismarck, and National Health Insurance Model, but every system has its limitations. Do you have any recommendations or hybrid model which India should adopt to serve its healthcare needs for varied segments of its population?

The best healthcare financing is a single-payer approach by government (shared between the Union and State levels). The US model of private health insurance is unjust, costly, and unfair, based on a powerful private – sector lobby that makes exorbitant profits at the expense of society, especially at the expense of the poor. India continues to under-invest in healthcare. It should be spending at least 4 percent of GDP on publicly financed healthcare, with the share rising gradually overtime.Until recently, India has been spending little more than 1 percent of GDP, a shockingly small amount, and perhaps the lowest public-sector outlay on health of any major country. Of course, good health comes not just through a high-quality and equitable health system, but also through healthy life practices. India should avoid the American fast-food industry and the accompanying obesity syndrome, the heavy addiction to cigarettes, and the massive air and water pollution that claim so many lives. Quality education for all, and gender equality will also strengthen health outcomes.

Q. You have vast knowledge of Indian healthcare system, having been associated with various initiatives like National Rural Health Mission. How do you think the Bottom of Pyramid can be served in its healthcare needs?

The surprising point about India is how the government chronically under-invests in healthcare. In this case, India is following the US model, of relying on privately provided healthcare. But that only works for the upper class, not the poor.

Q. How should Indian healthcare policies be structured to integrate the technological innovation to achieve its healthcare goals?

Digital technologies enable low-cost, high-quality, and innovative delivery of healthcare. Smartphones can play a vital role: to connect households with health providers, for remote sensing of patient data, for guiding community health workers (such as ASHAs), for telemedicine and distance diagnostics, for collecting and reporting data, etc. More generally, we are in an era of rapid technological breakthroughs in diagnostics, big data collection and processing, remote monitoring, new medicines, genomics, social medicine (including community-based mental health services), and environmental determinants of health. India should turn to its key institutions such as the Public Health Foundation of India to help set roadmaps for universal health coverage based on innovative technologies. And as with the US National Institutes of Health and the UK’s Wellcome Trust, India should explore an innovation ecosystem built on public financing, private foundations, and private-sector financing for cutting-edge R&D. A single-payer system should reimburse private providers at fixed public rates to give them the incentives to reduce costs and raise the quality through innovations. In other words, a single-payer system can still induce innovation by private providers, but within the context of universal coverage and without the excessive lobbying power of private health providers. European models will be helpful here.

Q. How globalization can help developing countries in improving healthcare? Is it a win-win situation for both developing and developed countries?

SDG 3 sets a shared global set of health objectives – “healthy lives for all at all ages”. In other words, the SDGs can build a shared global perspective and strategy. Of course, the gains are win-win. If all countries coordinate on decarbonizing the energy system, all will gain in improved health (fewer extreme heatwaves and climate-related disasters, reduced air pollution). If they cooperate on improved delivery of primary healthcare, there will be fewer uncontrolled epidemics of emerging diseases. If they cooperate on regulations on antibiotic use, there will be much less onset of antibiotic resistance. If all countries cooperate on sustainable farm practices, there will be healthier diets and less irresponsible use of antibiotics for farm animals. In other words, there are huge gains to global cooperation. Moreover, the poor countries depend on financial support from the rich countries like – to finance the control of epidemic diseases, the shift to clean energy, and the implementation of universal health coverage. Crucial institutions like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, need much more global financing. The world’s billionaires should be doing much more than most of them are doing now to put their vast wealth at the service of humanity. No country should say, “America first,” or “India first,” or “China first.” All countries should say “The World First,” and we will all come out ahead.

According to the Merriam- Webster dictionary, an analysis is “a detailed examination of anything complex in order to understand its nature or to determine its essential features: a thorough study.” Data analytics is a method of analyzing, manipulating, and processing of complex data in a more defined and logical way. In brief, it can be defined as “a method of logical analysis.” In data analytics method, complex data are drilled down at various levels in order to arrive or conclude in a meaningful way. It is mostly used to make organizational decisions, implement any new processes, changing the existing processes, etc.

The healthcare industry generates and collects a huge amount of complex data daily. Using data analytics technique, these large set of data can be broken down in a meaningful way to know the trends and make more accurate decisions for many major quality outcome projects. Through analyzing trends and forecasting the data, the healthcare providers will know whether implementing or changing any project would have a positive or negative impact on an organization. For example, if an organization wants to increase the overall mental health of their patient population, the provider should first know what percentage of patients are not undergoing their depression screening during an annual health checkup, says Thamarai. To identify the percentage of patients who did not have their depression screening done, the data analyst will collect data from the organization’s database for a year. Once the organization identifies the base population, the experts look at the data and analyze the gap by drilling down the data to find why a depression screening was not done. Finally, using the same data analytics method, an organization can decide whether this quality project needed to be implemented after performing management level decision such resource needed and financial status. According to Thamarai, however, though data analytics aids and helps the leaders to decide, it is utmost important to include clinical folk’s knowledge as there might be something beyond this analysis. In the above example, the patients who did not have depression screening may voluntary avoid (needed to be excluded from the base population) or there is no such information captured in the medical record altogether. In these scenarios, the doctors will come with ideas to close the gaps such as using a phrase or a flag in the medical record for the patients who voluntarily declined the screening. Hence, a combination of Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and data analytics team is required to obtain a positive outcome for any healthcare quality project.

“Can this data analytics method be feasible in the Indian Healthcare System?”. Major Indian healthcare organizations still use surveys and administrative medical records data to analyze the quality of care. These resources of data are less reliable and collecting this type of data is always a challenge for the healthcare organizations because of lack of Electronic Health Records (EHR), says Thamarai. Though EHR implementation is slow in India, it is predicted to grow in years to come because of many government-initiated policies such as ‘The Digital India Healthcare Policy’, increase in EHR implementation in Major hospitals like AIIMS, etc.

Q. What is the Swedish interest in India and your priority topics for the Indian health sector?

We have a very fruitful bilateral collaboration with India in the health sector, beginning with our development cooperation in areas such as mother- and child health, midwifery, and work against communicable diseases. Cooperation has now increased to mutually beneficial partnerships. For the past ten years, we have had a Memorandum of Understanding on Health between our countries and next year we are going to celebrate this with an India-Swedish Health Year.

Many collaborations of mutual interests are ongoing and being planned that focus in a wide range of areas like antimicrobial resistance, elderly care, pharmaceuticals, non-communicable diseases and digital innovations including artificial intelligence, where the emphasis will be on knowledge transfer, capacity building and skills training.

We are in the process of putting out calls and setting up incubators which will encourage close collaboration between the innovators in Sweden and India. Solutions are only sustainable if both sides contribute and share a strong sense of ownership. Progress has already been made in laying the groundwork for such partnerships within the sectors of clean energy and smart cities, and we hope to launch initiatives targeted to healthcare during the coming year. The Embassy will be sure to keep you posted.

Q. India and Sweden will complete 10 years of Partnership in Health Sector in 2019, any plans in store for 2019?

India and Sweden plan to commemorate the ten years completion of the MoU in 2019. We hope to enhance our collaborations in new areas with new stakeholders like the new AIIMS that have come up in some states. We also hope to have high-level visits from both sides to enhance policy dialogues and bilateral relations. Some of the collaborative partners are also developing new plans to strengthen their cooperation.

Q. What can Indian healthcare businesses gain from Swedish healthcare businesses?

Any suggestions on possible partnerships? It is not so much what the Indian healthcare system can gain, but rather, how can we join forces to overcome common challenges. Swedish businesses have been in India for many years. Within healthcare, we have AstraZeneca, who recently celebrated 40 years in India, and Getinge who has been investing in the Indian ecosystem for many years. Their focus, like many others, has been in building the capacity of their employees and the users of their products to increase efficiency. The businesses also bring with them lessons from Sweden so that we can help India leapfrog outdated technology. Sweden also ranks high in most innovation indexes – it can be argued that our relatively small size makes collaborations outside traditional silos necessary in order to succeed. Public actors, private companies, and institutions often work together in finding innovative solutions to serious healthcare challenges. We would like to work with India to build spaces for similar ecosystems across India.

Q. What are the common areas for healthcare research and ongoing partnerships for both sides to collaborate?

Under the MoU, there are extensive collaborations between public authorities and universities from both countries. For instance, the Swedish Public Health Agency, Medical Product Agency and Forte (the Swedish Research Council on Health, Working Life and Welfare) have an ongoing collaboration with their Indian counterparts. There are ongoing discussions on extending collaborations with new players like our National Board of Health and Welfare and E-Health Authority as well as between our medical universities such as Karolinska Institute, Uppsala University and the different AIIMS.

Through these collaborations, we hope to demonstrate best practices and technologies. We have research calls in different areas for example with EU in big data and artificial intelligence for monitoring health status and quality of life after cancer treatment, under JPIAMR call on diagnostics and surveillance 2019.

Innovation-the UNNATI way is an India-Sweden Innovators for strategic business development to address global challenges. It is an industry-supported initiative coordinated by Business Sweden in collaboration with AGNIi-Invest India and ATAL Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog.

The Swedish Public Health Agency and the Indian National Centre for Disease Control have an ongoing collaboration with a focus on antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, the Indian Ministry of Health has proposed that Sweden collaborate closely with a new-AIIMS and its associated Health and Wellness Centres. AIIMS-Jodhpur has been suggested to us and we are currently considering the scope of such collaboration.

Do you see any collaboration in this field with Indian providers? This is a hot topic all over the world right now. I know India is well ahead in AI technology while Sweden has more long-term experience in extracting relevant information from vast amounts of data. Our patient registries have enabled us to have one of the highest cancer survival rates in the world and that is only one example. I believe we will see some collaborations in the coming year, especially as you are arranging a delegation to Sweden addressing this exact topic in May next year. I will follow this progress closely.

Q. What is your message for InnoHEALTH Magazine readers? How can we, as a platform, support India-Swedish collaboration?

I congratulate InnovatioCuris for collaborating with Swecare Foundation and Swedish Medtech in facilitating innovative and promising solutions for India. Sweden has a long tradition of developing innovations in healthcare. We also have a well-functioning public sector, together with extensive health data registries, biobanks and digital connectivity infrastructure, that provides great opportunities to develop innovative, demand-driven, competitive solutions for healthcare. Exciting opportunities abound in an environment dedicated to medical innovation, drug discovery and pharmaceutical commercialization. Sweden and India have lots to share and learn from each other!

Deliberated on possible ideas to further strengthen the Indian healthcare system, learning from other markets (NHS), offerings in the insurance sector, new care delivery models such as home healthcare offer and possibilities with alternative medicine and treatment lines. To tie all of this in a goal, which is to improve the quality of care and reduce the cost of care delivery.

Dr.James shared his work from the UK of the quadruple aim of building Healthcare system by mentioning that not only three aims but the fourth also existed and those are :

-Improving the health and wellbeing of the population
-Improving the individual outcomes & experience of care
-Reducing the per capita cost of care
-Fourth and important aim: Improving the experience of providing care

Systems with a strong generalist approach work best for access, equity and cost-effectiveness.

The supply of Primary Care Physicians is associated with improvements in population health inequalities. By contrast, specialist groups make little difference in health inequalities or cost-effective care.

Since a good system to primary care will lead to proper and optimum cost.

Ayushman Bharat is one of the largest schemes in India which will be covering 100 million poor and vulnerable families that acquits up to 500 million people. The panel discussed the key challenges anticipated in the different perspective since there were panelists from the different area of expertise.
