At the InnoHealth Conference 2024, host Mercilina sat down with Mr. Arun Agarwal, the founder of Janitri, a Bangalore-based health tech company revolutionizing maternal and newborn care. With a focus on critical monitoring during pregnancy, labor, and the neonatal period, Janitri is working to prevent maternal and infant mortality through wearable and AI-enabled technology.

A Mission Rooted in Compassion

“Janitri is a Sanskrit word for ‘mother’,” Arun explained. “Our vision is a world where no mother or baby dies during pregnancy, labor, or the newborn phase.” The startup, now eight years into its journey, has partnered with over 600 hospitals and has already impacted the lives of more than 8,000 mothers, monitoring over 150,000 pregnancies.

Janitri focuses on the critical “first thousand days” — from conception to two years after birth — by enabling real-time monitoring of vital signs through wearable devices. These solutions are designed to assist in both hospital and home settings, ensuring that early decisions can be made based on accurate data.

The Ground Reality: Urban vs. Rural Disparities

When asked about the current state of maternal and infant health in India, Arun highlighted a pressing concern. “India sees about 3 crore births annually, but we have only around 50,000 gynecologists,” he said. This stark mismatch in resources creates a heavy reliance on frontline workers like staff nurses and ASHA workers, especially in rural regions.

Statistically, India’s maternal mortality rate stands at approximately 97 per 100,000 live births, while the infant mortality rate is around 29–30 per 1,000 live births. However, these figures vary widely across states and are notably higher in rural areas, where access to emergency interventions like C-sections is limited. “In urban areas, C-sections are often used to prevent complications. But rural settings don’t have that luxury,” Arun noted.

Bridging the Gap with Technology

To address this disparity, Arun believes technology is the most viable and scalable solution. “We cannot bridge the gap with manpower alone, but we can with tech,” he emphasized. Janitri’s wearable devices monitor vital signs during prenatal, labor, and postpartum phases and assist healthcare workers in making timely decisions.

The Indian government is also stepping in with supportive policies. Programs like the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan and the integration of tech into public healthcare systems (including RCH, previously known as the Mother-Child Tracking System or MCTS) show promise. Arun expressed optimism about India’s growing focus on medtech innovation, which is being bolstered by favorable regulatory policies and investment in medical device manufacturing.

Looking Ahead

Janitri’s approach is not just about building products — it’s about building trust and empowering frontline workers with tools that enable better outcomes. Arun’s grassroots research, which included visits to over 100 hospitals and consultations with healthcare providers and families, shaped the company’s deep understanding of on-the-ground challenges.

As the conversation concluded, Arun reiterated Janitri’s core belief: “Many of these maternal and neonatal deaths are preventable. It all comes down to timely monitoring and intervention — and that’s exactly what we’re here to enable.”

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, Captain Dr. Indira Rani—an esteemed healthcare leader with over 35 years of experience—joined host Mercilina to delve into how India’s nursing workforce is adapting to the rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Dr. Rani, who holds a Doctorate in Health Economics and currently serves as the Chief Nursing Officer at Max Healthcare, brings a unique blend of clinical, academic, and administrative expertise to this transformative discussion.

Technology Meets Compassion in Nursing

Dr. Rani emphasized that while today’s novice nurses entering hospitals are often tech-savvy, their digital fluency is typically limited to smartphones and general-purpose devices—not specialized healthcare technologies.

“In private and government nursing colleges, simulation labs and smart boards are slowly becoming more common,” she said. “But it will still take time before our nursing academics are fully tech-integrated.”

Yet, she stressed an important point: nursing is a human-touch profession. “Technology should enhance, not replace, the essence of nursing—which is care,” she explained.

To strike this balance, Max Healthcare has instituted a rigorous 40-day tech upskilling program for incoming nurses. This training ensures that nurses can confidently use clinical devices and digital platforms while preserving compassionate, patient-centered care.

A Curriculum That Needs to Catch Up

Turning to the educational framework, Dr. Rani shared her concerns regarding India’s nursing curriculum.

Although the Indian Nursing Council (INC) recently introduced a semester-based structure to include modern technology, she noted that AI is still not sufficiently integrated. “When the curriculum was designed, AI hadn’t yet reached its current boom. Today, with robotics and digital platforms entering operation theaters, we need to catch up,” she remarked.

Dr. Rani called for urgent curriculum reforms to incorporate AI, data literacy, and healthcare innovation, ensuring future nurses are not just reactive users but confident co-navigators of evolving healthcare systems.

AI as an Ally, Not a Threat

Contrary to the common fear that AI might replace human roles, Dr. Rani offered a more optimistic perspective.

“Nurses won’t be replaced by AI. Rather, AI will help reduce their burden and improve efficiency,” she said. From managing non-clinical tasks like monitoring IV drips or responding to patient call bells, to preventing documentation errors or ensuring infection control, AI can automate routine duties, giving nurses more time to focus on meaningful patient interactions.

“In the next two to three years, we’ll see a full merge of AI into bedside nursing,” she predicted, emphasizing the need for nurses to learn how to ‘prompt’ AI tools effectively, just like surgeons adapt to robotic assistance in complex procedures.

The Line Between Tech and True AI

Dr. Rani clarified a common misconception: not all hospital technology is AI. For example, intensive care units already use technological tools like hemodynamic monitors, which raise alarms during vital sign drops. However, true AI goes further, aiding in diagnosis, lab analysis, and real-time surgical decisions.

She cited a recent case where AI alerted a neurosurgeon within seconds that a small tumor fragment was still left in the cranium—a reminder of how powerful AI can be in improving patient outcomes when used wisely.

Final Thoughts

While AI is just beginning to enter Indian hospitals, especially at the bedside, leaders like Dr. Indira Rani are already preparing the next generation of nurses to embrace it—not as a replacement, but as a partner in care.

“AI will never take away the human touch,” she concluded. “But when used thoughtfully, it will enhance care, reduce stress, and lead to better patient outcomes.”

At InnoHEALTH 2024, host Deepshikha welcomed a rising name in the intersection of science and wellness: Dr. Priyanka Sharma, a researcher-turned-entrepreneur whose mission is to transform the way we manage lifestyle diseases like diabetes—one herbal snack at a time.

From Scholar to Entrepreneur: A Mission Rooted in Wellness

“I’m a scholar, researcher—and now, you could say, an entrepreneur,” Dr. Sharma introduced herself with pride and purpose. With a strong foundation in pharmaceutical research and a passion for holistic health, her journey has led her to create Diabetes Treats, a startup focused on crafting scientifically validated herbal products that integrate easily into daily life.

“She focuses on blending ancient herbal wisdom with modern science to create natural, functional snacks that promote blood sugar balance and support metabolic health.”

Rethinking Diabetes Management Through Daily Nutrition

While conventional medicine remains essential in managing diabetes, Dr. Sharma emphasizes the growing need for complementary dietary solutions—natural, safe, and effective options that fit into daily routines without requiring radical lifestyle changes.

“There’s a significant gap between medical treatment and everyday dietary habits,” she explained. “Many patients rely on so-called sugar-free snacks that only replace sugar with artificial sweeteners. But what about snacks that actively help regulate glucose levels?”

That question led to a unique innovation: medicinal snacks, such as protein bars, soups, and herbal-infused biscuits, designed not only for flavor and convenience but also for functional health benefits.

Personal Inspiration Behind a Professional Vision

Behind her professional drive lies a deeply personal story. One day, while spending time with her parents—both champions of healthy living in principle but not in practice—Dr. Sharma noticed their fondness for casual snacking.

“They were eating unhealthy snacks just to spend time with us,” she recalled. “And I realized, if I want to preserve these precious moments, I need to bring something better to the table—literally.”

That moment sparked her determination to develop science-backed, diabetes-friendly snacks that bring families together without compromising health. “As someone from the scientific community, I felt it was not just an opportunity, but my responsibility,” she added.

Rigor Meets Innovation: The Science Behind the Snacks

Developing products that are both medically beneficial and market-ready is no small feat. Dr. Sharma and her team conducted rigorous research and validation studies, sourcing herbs known for their hypoglycemic properties from Ayurvedic and traditional medicine, and testing their effectiveness and safety in controlled environments.

“Many of these herbs have been known for centuries,” she noted. “But they’ve never been made part of our daily routines. We wanted to change that—with convenience, taste, and proven benefits.”

Looking Forward: A Call to Action

As the conversation wrapped up, Dr. Sharma extended a heartfelt invitation to listeners. “Join me in this journey,” she urged. “Let’s raise awareness, promote wellness, and create a future where healthcare doesn’t feel like a burden—but a part of life.”

With her blend of scientific integrity, personal passion, and entrepreneurial spirit, Dr. Priyanka Sharma is redefining how we approach chronic conditions—not through prescriptions alone, but through informed, empowered, and herbal-infused choices.

At InnoHEALTH 2024, host Ursina welcomed a distinguished voice in nursing education—Dr. Ramindra Kalra, Principal of Holy Family College of Nursing, and a veteran with 39 years of experience as a nurse educator. As the Founder Principal of the college, Dr. Kalra brought a powerful message to the table: while AI and digital technologies are transforming healthcare, the essence of nursing—compassion and human touch—must remain non-negotiable.

Nursing Curriculum in the Digital Age

Addressing whether nursing education is ready for AI, Dr. Kalra noted that India has already updated its nursing curriculum to include digitization, computer literacy, and even AI-related electives. “The first batch under the new curriculum will graduate in 2025–2026,” she said, adding that while students are becoming increasingly tech-savvy, faculty training is a crucial missing piece.

She also raised a modern challenge: the rise of generative tools like ChatGPT. While acknowledging its utility, Dr. Kalra emphasized the importance of critical thinking and originality, which are at risk if students overly rely on AI for academic assignments.

Hands-On Training Meets Digital Transformation

One of the strengths of India’s nursing education, according to Dr. Kalra, is the early and extensive exposure to clinical practice. Unlike some Western institutions where students begin hospital work only during internships, Indian nursing students are in clinical settings from the very first year. At Holy Family Hospital—a COVID-care facility—students and faculty worked at the patient bedside throughout the pandemic, ensuring that compassion was never lost in crisis.

Dr. Kalra shared that the college is currently co-developing a digital curriculum software that integrates video lectures and interactive modules. Teachers can track student engagement and assign pre-reading, allowing more time for critical discussions and problem-solving in class.

However, she cautioned against letting technology dilute the human aspect of nursing: “No matter how advanced monitors or data systems become, patients still need a nurse’s presence, empathy, and care at the bedside.”

India vs. the West: A Strength in Practical Training

Comparing India’s nursing education system with that of developed countries, Dr. Kalra proudly noted that Indian nurses are often more holistically trained. When students from her college work abroad, they often outperform their counterparts who are trained in narrow specializations.

“In India, we maintain continuity—faculty who teach theory also teach in clinicals,” she explained. “In the West, clinical instruction is often handled by separate preceptors. This separation can weaken the integration between knowledge and practice.”

A Message for the Nursing Community

Dr. Kalra’s message to young nurses and educators was clear: “Put yourself in the patient’s place. That perspective will guide you to be a truly great nurse.” She also stressed the importance of lifelong learning. “Even after nearly four decades in this profession, I still strive to learn every day.”

She concluded with a heartfelt call for greater recognition of nurses. “They’re doing incredible work. What they need most is acknowledgement and continued opportunities for growth.”

Dr. Ramindra Kalra’s insights are a timely reminder that even as technology reshapes healthcare, the soul of nursing lies in compassion, human connection, and the tireless pursuit of excellence.

At the InnoHealth Conference 2024, host Mercilina had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Adil Khan Yusuf Zai, a visionary healthcare entrepreneur reshaping how India approaches patient care. Though trained as a medical doctor, Dr. Adil chose a different path—leveraging technology to create widespread, meaningful impact in the healthcare industry.

From Medicine to Innovation

“I’m a registered medical practitioner,” Dr. Adil began, “but I realized early in med school that my true calling was in technology.” This realization set him on an extraordinary journey, leading him to pursue a master’s degree in health tech innovation and entrepreneurship at Stanford University. After successfully launching and exiting a medical device startup and gaining experience as a product manager in two companies, Dr. Adil is now focused on his dream project: building India’s first healthcare super app.

Addressing Gaps in the Patient Journey

Dr. Adil’s startup aims to provide comprehensive, personalized care that extends beyond hospital walls. “The patient journey doesn’t start at the hospital, nor does it end there,” he explained. Recognizing this, his team is developing a tech platform that curates individualized care plans for patients, offering support before and after surgery or hospitalization.

What sets their solution apart? All services are provided cashlessly through the app—India’s first out-of-hospital care platform to offer this. It’s a bold value proposition aimed at making healthcare more accessible, convenient, and affordable.

India vs. Global Healthcare Systems

Despite studying and working in the U.S., Dr. Adil holds Indian healthcare in high regard. “Trust me, the U.S. healthcare system isn’t as good as you might think,” he stated. “It’s exorbitantly expensive and entirely insurance-dependent.” While India has its own challenges, he believes it is fertile ground for health tech innovation, with abundant problems to solve and immense potential to scale meaningful solutions.

The Role of AI and the Rural-Urban Divide

When asked about integrating AI in healthcare, Dr. Adil pointed out that the technology is still maturing. “AI won’t replace doctors—it should augment them,” he emphasized. Challenges persist, especially with skepticism from both doctors and patients, but he’s optimistic that time and education will ease this transition.

Surprisingly, he also noted that technology adoption in India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is outpacing urban centers. Thanks to affordable internet access and a hunger for quality healthcare, rural areas are proving to be fertile ground for digital health solutions.

A Vision of the Future

Dr. Adil envisions a future where healthcare returns to its roots—within the home. “A hundred years ago, doctors used to visit homes. I believe we’re heading back in that direction, but powered by technology,” he said. With remote monitoring tools, smart sensors, and predictive AI, the majority of care could soon be delivered in the comfort of one’s own home.

A Message for Aspiring Change-Makers

Dr. Adil ended the conversation with a heartfelt message: “If you’re searching for a purpose, healthcare is soul-fulfilling. People will always need it, and it’s one of the few industries where your work can truly change lives.” He encouraged young innovators to explore the sector and reach out to him on LinkedIn if they’re passionate about making a difference.

At the 2024 InnoHEALTH Conference, innovation met inspiration as Dr. Amit Raj, a passionate healthcare leader and digital health advocate, shared his journey, insights, and vision for transforming India’s healthcare landscape. In an engaging conversation on the InnoHEALTH Magazine podcast, he opened up about the lessons learned from his mentor, the reality of healthcare gaps, and the role of passion and collaboration in driving meaningful change.

Mentorship, Mission, and the Power of Belief
He began by paying tribute to his mentor Dr. V.K. Singh who recognized his potential early on. It was at a CII conference in Delhi where he was first encouraged to speak publicly about his work—an invitation that changed the course of his career.
“He said, ‘I want you here, Amit.’ There were no questions after that,” he recalled. “His aura was commanding. His belief in me changed everything.”
This mentorship instilled in him a foundational belief: follow your instincts, chase your dreams, and never look back if your heart is in the right place.

Innovation Starts on the Ground
At the core of his philosophy is a bottom-up approach to innovation—learning directly from frontline healthcare workers. “The real gaps are seen by those on the ground—doctors, paramedics, support staff,” he emphasized. Innovation, according to him, is about listening to the unsung heroes of the system, not just developing high-tech tools.
He shared a simple yet powerful example: a hospital receptionist who deals with a wide range of patient queries every day. “She’ll tell you exactly what she needs to do her job better. That’s where innovation begins.”

Borrowing Wisdom from Other Industries
He also advocated for looking beyond healthcare for solutions. Drawing inspiration from a session with Professor Venkat of IIM, he realized that sectors like banking and telecommunications often develop technologies that can be adapted to health services.
“Industry-driven solutions aren’t just for one sector. With creative adaptation, they can bridge gaps in healthcare too,” he said.

Passion Over Profit
A recurring message throughout the conversation was the importance of purpose. He warned against jumping into healthcare entrepreneurship just to make money. “If you’re only here to make money, it won’t work. True success is a byproduct of passion and purpose.”
He urged aspiring entrepreneurs to engage deeply with the system, listen, learn, and be driven by a genuine desire to create lasting change.

India as a Global Healthcare Leader

Looking to the future, he painted a hopeful picture. With India’s scale, diversity, and growing healthcare infrastructure, he believes the country is poised to become a global example in healthcare delivery.
“We’re doing a fantastic job. In the next decade or two, India will show the world how it’s done—how to deliver health for all, despite scale and complexity.”
He called for stronger collaboration among industry experts, grassroots workers, and policymakers, stressing the importance of mentorship and community-driven leadership.

Final Words
His insights weren’t just about identifying problems—they were a call to action for people to listen, learn, and innovate with empathy. His vision is clear: by staying grounded, passionate, and collaborative, India can set a new global standard in healthcare.
As he put it, “The solutions are right in front of us. We just need to open our eyes—and our ears.”

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, we had the privilege of sitting down with Professor Lavanya Nandan, Principal of Nightingale Institute of Nursing, Noida. Our conversation revolved around how technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the nursing profession.

A Platform for Nursing to Shine

Professor Nandan began by expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to discuss nursing on such a prominent platform. She emphasized how crucial it is for nurses to be recognized in the broader spectrum of healthcare, alongside management and IT professionals.

“It’s wonderful to see nursing being acknowledged as an evolving profession. This platform allows us to address challenges, inclusivity, and progress in the field,” she said.

AI & Technology: Challenge or Opportunity?

When asked about the challenges nurses face with AI and rapidly changing technology, Professor Nandan had an interesting perspective.

“I wouldn’t call it a challenge,” she explained. “Rather, it’s an opportunity we have yet to fully explore. AI, virtual reality, and simulation-based learning are tools that can enhance our profession. We’ve already started integrating them into our curriculum and professional training.”

She pointed out that many corporate hospitals have already embraced digital documentation, replacing traditional paper records. This shift makes nurses more technologically competent and improves patient care.

“In the next five years, AI will be an integral part of nursing. We’re already conducting virtual seminars and on-site workshops to train nurses in these advancements. For example, I recently attended a one-day digital health workshop in Mumbai specifically for nurses. The industry is actively preparing for this transition.”

How is Nursing Adapting to AI?

The conversation then turned to how the nursing industry is implementing AI and tech training.

Professor Nandan reassured that change is already underway. Training programs are now embedded in both educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

“A great initiative has come from the Indian Nursing Council in collaboration with IIT Raipur. They’ve introduced a six-month certification program where IT professionals train nurses in healthcare technology at a very affordable cost. This kind of partnership is exactly what we need to move forward.”

Additionally, telehealth, robotic-assisted surgeries, wearable health gadgets, and digital data collection are already becoming part of nursing practice. Even medical equipment is increasingly embedded with AI, making it essential for nurses to understand and operate them effectively.

Simulation Labs: The Future of Nursing Education

One of the most exciting developments is the rise of simulation-based learning.

“In India, we’re seeing the growth of simulation labs where nurses can practice on AI-powered mannequins. This allows them to refine their skills in a safe, controlled environment before working with real patients,” she shared.

Final Thoughts

As we wrapped up our conversation, Professor Nandan expressed her confidence in nurses adapting to the digital revolution.

“I don’t see this as a challenge but as an innovation. With continuous training, collaboration, and willingness to learn, we can enhance the quality of nursing and patient care.”

It was truly inspiring to hear her insights. As the healthcare landscape evolves, one thing is certain: nurses are not just keeping up with technology – they are leading the way.

Introduction

In an era where healthcare challenges are becoming increasingly complex, innovation and sustainability have emerged as crucial pillars in public health. At the InnoHealth Conference 2024, Dr. Pushkar Kumar, a seasoned physician, pathologist, and public health expert, shared valuable insights into the evolving landscape of public health, AI-driven capacity building, and sustainable healthcare solutions.

The Role of Innovation in Healthcare

Dr. Kumar emphasized that innovation is not limited to medical advancements but extends to operational efficiency, patient management, and data-driven decision-making. Having been associated with InnoHealth for several years, he noted that innovation is a key driver of progress in healthcare, touching everything from patient care to administrative processes like billing and counseling services.

“Innovations have to be at the core of healthcare. The field is evolving rapidly, and technology is playing an integral role in improving patient outcomes and accessibility,” Dr. Kumar stated.

AI and Its Growing Influence in Public Health

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making significant strides in the healthcare industry, and Dr. Kumar highlighted its growing importance in public health, particularly at the grassroots level. While acknowledging some concerns about AI’s overreach, he pointed out its numerous benefits, including improved accessibility, streamlined record-keeping, and enhanced follow-up care.

“AI has helped in overcoming accessibility barriers, especially in rural areas. It allows us to maintain better records, track patient progress, and reach a wider audience at a lower cost,” he explained.

AI has also revolutionized capacity building in public health, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. With restrictions limiting physical interactions, AI-driven virtual training sessions enabled healthcare professionals to continue learning and enhancing their skills remotely. According to Dr. Kumar, AI has not only reduced training costs but also expanded the reach of educational programs to previously underserved areas.

Sustainability Models in Public Health Training

Having spent a decade working with the Government of India before transitioning to the NGO sector, Dr. Kumar shared his perspective on the challenges of funding and sustainability in public health initiatives. He noted that while government-backed projects have access to extensive resources, NGOs must explore alternative funding models to sustain their programs.

“To run any program effectively, funding is necessary. However, leveraging technology allows us to reach a larger audience with minimal expenditure. Sustainability lies in creating value-driven models that maximize impact with limited resources,” he explained.

Dr. Kumar emphasized the need for financially sustainable training programs where participants contribute a small fee, reducing dependency on external funding. One successful approach has been the use of technology-driven remote training, which enables physicians and healthcare workers to receive quality education without incurring travel costs.

Making Healthcare More Accessible and Affordable

Dr. Kumar stressed that affordability should not be a barrier to quality healthcare. By adopting innovative models and utilizing existing resources efficiently, healthcare professionals can create a more inclusive system that caters to underserved populations.

He drew attention to the small, everyday expenditures that individuals make—such as transportation or discretionary spending on non-essential items—and suggested that redirecting even a fraction of these resources toward healthcare could make a significant difference.

“If we save small amounts from our daily expenses and invest in healthcare, we can create sustainable solutions that benefit a larger population,” he noted.

Conclusion

Public health is at a crucial juncture where innovation, technology, and sustainability must work hand in hand. Dr. Pushkar Kumar’s insights underscore the importance of embracing AI, refining training methodologies, and developing sustainable models to improve healthcare access. As the healthcare sector continues to evolve, collaborative efforts between governments, NGOs, and private organizations will be key in ensuring that quality healthcare reaches every individual, irrespective of their socioeconomic status.

With healthcare experts like Dr. Kumar leading the charge, the future of public health looks promising, driven by innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Introduction

Healthcare in India has undergone a remarkable transformation over the decades. From a system heavily reliant on paper-based documentation to one now integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health, the landscape has changed significantly. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, a seasoned medical professional with vast experience in public health and global healthcare systems, shared his insights at the InnoHealth Conference 2024.

With experience spanning roles in the Indian Army, UNICEF, the National Health System Resource Center (NHSRC), and global organizations like WHO and the UN, Dr. Kumar has witnessed first-hand how public health has evolved both in India and internationally.

A Changing Healthcare Landscape

Reflecting on his return to India in 2012 after years abroad, Dr. Kumar observed a significant shift in healthcare policy and implementation. He noted key improvements, including:

Introduction of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) – A new community health workforce emerged to support rural healthcare delivery.

Expansion of the National Health Mission (NHM) – The government invested substantial funds to improve healthcare access across states.

Growing Public Awareness – Citizens are now more informed about public health, especially after COVID-19, shifting focus from only clinicians to public health professionals.

Increase in Life Expectancy – From an average lifespan of 32 years when he was born, life expectancy in India has now reached 71 years, marking a major public health achievement.

The Role of Technology in Healthcare

One of the most exciting changes Dr. Kumar highlighted is the integration of technology and AI into healthcare.

“Artificial intelligence didn’t start for medicine, but now it’s revolutionizing healthcare,” he emphasized.

Dr. Kumar envisions AI playing a crucial role not just in patient care but in preventive healthcare. He categorizes healthcare needs into three groups:

Healthy Individuals – Using AI-powered apps to track diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices to prevent future illnesses.

At-Risk Individuals – AI can help monitor those with a family history of diseases like diabetes and recommend personalized health interventions.

Patients with Chronic Diseases – Many people with conditions like hypertension and diabetes remain undiagnosed or do not adhere to treatment. AI-based diagnostic tools and remote monitoring can improve compliance and early detection.

“In India, half of hypertensive patients don’t even know they have hypertension, and among those diagnosed, many don’t take medications properly.”

Emerging non-invasive health tech could soon allow simple blood pressure or hemoglobin checks by merely touching a patient’s finger, similar to how plant health is assessed using chlorophyll sensors.

Shifting Focus to Preventive Healthcare

Dr. Kumar raised an important concern: Healthcare must focus on prevention rather than just treating illnesses. With lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension rising rapidly, hospitals are becoming overwhelmed.

“We need to take care of those who are healthy, or hospitals will be flooded with cases, and the community will experience more stress.”

Some key challenges include:

Aging Population – Over 110 million Indians are now above 60 years old, many suffering from chronic illnesses.

Longer Life Expectancy, But Not Healthy Years – Due to medical advancements, people with diabetes and heart disease live longer, but their quality of life is often compromised.

Need for Better Compliance in Treatment – AI-based reminders and community health interventions can ensure better medication adherence.

Conclusion: The Future of Healthcare

Prof. (Dr.) Sanjiv Kumar remains optimistic about India’s healthcare future. With technology, AI, and preventive care, the country can reduce the burden on hospitals, improve quality of life, and enhance public health awareness.

“Technology is exciting, and I believe it holds the key to solving our health problems.”

A proactive, technology-driven approach is essential for India’s next leap in healthcare innovation.

At the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, Dr. Urmila Bhardwaj, a distinguished nursing and healthcare professional, shared her insights on the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, and community health nursing. In an engaging discussion with host Mercilina, Dr. Bhardwaj shed light on how these factors are reshaping the healthcare landscape.

Dr. Bhardwaj’s Journey: From Clinical Practice to Academia

Dr. Bhardwaj’s career trajectory is an inspiring story of dedication and growth. Beginning with a diploma in nursing, she pursued higher education while working, eventually obtaining her MSc in Community Health Nursing from PGI Chandigarh and a PhD. Over the years, she contributed immensely to academia, serving as a professor at Jamia Hamdard and later as the Dean of Nursing at Sharda University. Her expertise spans bedside nursing, research, and healthcare education.

Reflecting on her experiences, Dr. Bhardwaj credited Holy Family Hospital for instilling in her the fundamentals of patient care, Jamia Hamdard for nurturing her academic and research skills, and Sharda University for exposing her to the advancements in AI and technology-driven healthcare.

Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword in Nursing

When asked about the role of AI in nursing, Dr. Bhardwaj acknowledged its tremendous potential in academics, particularly in enhancing learning and research. However, she expressed reservations about its clinical application, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of personalized care.

“Every patient is unique,” she noted. “AI functions based on standardized protocols, but human differences, emotions, and responses cannot be programmed.”

She highlighted the importance of human touch in nursing, explaining that even unconscious patients respond positively to physical touch, which has been scientifically proven to accelerate recovery. While AI can be a valuable tool for data management and diagnostics, it cannot substitute the compassion and individualized attention that nurses provide.

Sustainability in Healthcare: The Nurse’s Role

Sustainability has become a global priority, and Dr. Bhardwaj emphasized the significant role nurses play in fostering a sustainable healthcare ecosystem. Hospitals are high-energy consumption environments with significant waste production. Nurses, she suggested, should collaborate with biomedical engineers and healthcare professionals to implement eco-friendly solutions and reduce hospital pollution.

Beyond environmental sustainability, she also stressed financial sustainability. Sharing her research on tetanus vaccinations, she explained how cost-effective preventive care can save lives and reduce healthcare expenses. A simple, low-cost tetanus shot for expecting mothers can prevent neonatal tetanus, eliminating the need for costly medical interventions.

“Sustainability isn’t just about the environment,” she explained. “It’s about ensuring efficient resource utilization and promoting preventive healthcare.”

Community Health Nursing: A Transformative Force

Dr. Bhardwaj passionately spoke about the vital role of community health nurses in both rural and urban settings. Unlike hospital nurses, community health nurses have greater autonomy and the ability to directly influence public health.

“Community health is not limited to rural populations,” she emphasized. “Even urban elites can benefit from preventive healthcare measures.”

She highlighted the concept of primordial prevention—educating young individuals before unhealthy habits develop. For instance, informing school children about the dangers of smoking can prevent tobacco addiction before it even begins.

From prenatal care to elderly support, community health nurses work across all life stages, making them essential contributors to a healthier society.

A Message for Future Nurses

Concluding the discussion, Dr. Bhardwaj left listeners with an inspiring message:

“Serve with sincerity. See God in every individual. If nurses embrace spirituality—treating every patient with the same care and respect they would offer to the divine—the healthcare system will become a place of true compassion and healing.”

Final Thoughts

Dr. Urmila Bhardwaj’s insights provided valuable perspectives on the intersection of AI, sustainability, and community health nursing. While technological advancements continue to shape the future of healthcare, her emphasis on the human touch remains a crucial reminder of what truly defines nursing.
