From hydration and electrolyte balance to weight loss and skin health, coconut water has a wide range of transformative powers that can improve your quality of life.

Coconut water has gained popularity in recent years as a refreshing and nutritious beverage. This clear liquid is found inside young, green coconuts and is packed with essential nutrients that can benefit your overall health and well-being. In this article, we will explore the nutritional composition of coconut water and delve into its various health benefits. From hydration and electrolyte balance to weight loss and skin health, coconut water has a wide range of transformative powers that can improve your quality of life.

Introduction to Coconut Water

Coconut water is the clear, slightly sweet liquid found inside coconuts. It is different from coconut milk, which is made from the flesh of mature coconuts. Coconut water is a natural source of hydration and has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions. With its rich mineral content and refreshing taste, coconut water has become a popular beverage choice worldwide.

Nutritional Composition of Coconut Water

Coconut water is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients. It is low in calories and fat, making it a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. Coconut water is rich in electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which are crucial for maintaining proper hydration and supporting various bodily functions. Additionally, it contains vitamins C and B-complex, as well as amino acids and antioxidants that contribute to its health-promoting properties.

Coconut water is also a good source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and promotes a healthy gut. It is important to note that the nutritional composition of coconut water can vary depending on factors such as the age of the coconut and the region it is grown in. Nevertheless, coconut water consistently provides a range of essential nutrients that are beneficial to your overall well-being.

Health Benefits of Coconut Water

Coconut Water for Hydration and Electrolyte Balance

One of the primary benefits of coconut water is its ability to hydrate the body. It is a natural isotonic beverage, meaning it has a similar electrolyte balance to that of our body fluids. This makes coconut water an excellent choice for rehydrating after physical activity or during hot weather. The natural sugars in coconut water, along with its electrolyte content, help replenish lost fluids and restore the body’s hydration levels.

Coconut Water for Weight Loss and Metabolism

If you’re looking to shed a few pounds, coconut water can be a valuable addition to your weight loss journey. Not only is it low in calories, but it also contains enzymes that aid in digestion and boost metabolism. The fiber content in coconut water promotes a feeling of fullness, reducing cravings and overeating. Additionally, the natural sugars in coconut water provide a healthier alternative to sugary beverages, helping to cut down on unnecessary calories.

Coconut water also has a high water content, which can promote hydration and aid in the elimination of toxins from the body. When your body is properly hydrated, your metabolism functions optimally, allowing for efficient calorie burning and weight management.

Heart health

The potassium content in coconut water helps maintain healthy heart function by regulating blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, its high concentration of magnesium may help lower cholesterol levels and improve circulation

Natural Hangover Remedy

Coconut Water is often used as a natural remedy for hang-overs due to its hydrating properties and ability to replenish essential electrolytes lost during excessive alcohol consumption. It works wonders to alleviate headaches, nausea and fatigue associated with alcohol-induced dehydration.

Coconut Water for Skin Health and Beauty

In addition to its internal health benefits, coconut water can also work wonders for your skin. Its hydrating properties help to moisturize the skin from within, promoting a healthy and glowing complexion. Coconut water is rich in cytokinins, which are plant hormones that have been shown to have anti-aging effects on human cells. These compounds can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, giving your skin a more youthful and radiant appearance.

Furthermore, the vitamins and antioxidants present in coconut water can protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals, environmental pollutants, and harmful UV rays. Regular consumption of coconut water may contribute to a clearer complexion, improved skin elasticity, and a more even skin tone.

Coconut Water for Digestion and Gut Health

Maintaining a healthy digestive system is essential for overall well-being. Coconut water contains bioactive enzymes that aid in digestion and promote a healthy gut. These enzymes help break down food more efficiently, allowing for better nutrient absorption and reducing the likelihood of digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and constipation.

The fiber content in coconut water also supports a healthy digestive system. Dietary fiber adds bulk to the stool, promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. Additionally, coconut water can help soothe the digestive tract and reduce inflammation, making it beneficial for individuals with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Coconut Water for Cardiovascular Health

Coconut water can also be added to various recipes, such as soups, curries, and desserts, to enhance flavor and provide added nutrition.

Maintaining a healthy heart is crucial for overall well-being. Coconut water can contribute to cardiovascular health due to its potassium content. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium in the body. Consuming coconut water regularly can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Furthermore, coconut water has been found to have cholesterol-lowering effects. It contains compounds that promote the production of HDL (good) cholesterol while reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. By improving cholesterol ratios, coconut water can support a healthy heart and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

How to Incorporate Coconut Water into Your Diet?

Incorporating coconut water into your diet is easy and enjoyable. You can enjoy it on its own as a refreshing beverage or use it as a base for smoothies and shakes. Coconut water can also be added to various recipes, such as soups, curries, and desserts, to enhance flavor and provide added nutrition. Additionally, it can be used as a natural sports drink to replenish electrolytes after exercise or physical activity.

When purchasing coconut water, opt for brands that offer 100% pure coconut water without any added sugars or artificial additives. Fresh coconut water from young coconuts is considered the best option, but packaged coconut water is also a convenient choice. Be sure to check the label for any additional ingredients or preservatives.

Precautions and Considerations When Consuming Coconut Water

While coconut water is generally safe for consumption, there are a few precautions and considerations to keep in mind. If you have a known allergy to coconuts, it’s important to avoid coconut water as it may trigger an allergic reaction. Additionally, individuals with kidney problems or those on a low-potassium diet should consult their healthcare provider before consuming large quantities of coconut water.

It’s also worth noting that coconut water should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment or medication. While it offers numerous health benefits, it is not a cure-all solution for any specific condition. If you have any underlying health concerns or are taking medication, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle. Whether for athletes, health-conscious individuals, or those seeking a natural remedy, coconut water is a refreshing solution.

The Transformative Power of Coconut Water for Overall Well-being

By incorporating coconut water into your daily routine, you can reap the rewards of its various health benefits. Whether you’re looking to improve your digestion, boost your metabolism, or enhance your skin’s radiance, coconut water can be a natural and effective solution. So, why not give it a try and experience the transformative power of coconut water for yourself?

Increasing protein and dairy intake may help reduce burden of diabetes: A study

Diabetes – increase in blood glucose levels – is an emerging health problem, especially in developing countries. According to the World Health Organisation, India had 69 million diabetic individuals in 2015 and the number is projected to go up to 98 million by 2030. The problem is more serious for Asians as their genetic make-up puts them at a greater risk of diabetes at a younger age than their European counterparts.

If left untreated, diabetes can intensify to serious health conditions like blindness, kidney failure, heart problems, etc. Apart from genetic factors, the occurrence of diabetes is related to food preferences and lifestyles. Therefore, understanding the link between the consumption of various foods and the prevalence of diabetes in different states can help in devising effective strategies to address the problem.

Also Read: A Consequence of Modern Day Living – Burnout

A new study has linked the food preferences of individuals to the prevalence of diabetes in various states of India. The study has found that eating calorie-rich food like sugar and honey increases the risk of diabetes while the addition of protein-rich food and dairy products in a meal can help reduce the risk of diabetes.

The study is based on data from the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015– 2016), 2011 census, data on per capita crop production, and consumption figures of different food groups from the 68th round of the National Sample Survey. It evaluated trends of food availability and preferences in various states with diabetes numbers.

Also Read: Resistant STIs on Rise

It was found that diabetes was more common in states like West Bengal and Kerala where people consume more non-vegetarian food than the one where the diet is predominantly vegetarian. This is because a vegetarian diet helps in diabetes management by making the body sensitive to the insulin hormone.

Researchers also noted that there were more diabetics in the states where people consumed more sugar and honey though this trend was not valid in the case of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Haryana. The study also found that eating protein-rich food such as pulses and nuts decreased the chances of diabetes. Similarly, states, where people ate more dairy products, had a low prevalence of diabetes.

Also Read: Distributed incubation may help promote grassroots innovations

Diabetes, often dubbed as a lifestyle disorder, was also found to be high in urban districts than in rural areas. This is so because people in cities tend to be less physically active. This makes urbanization an important factor for the growing number of diabetics in the country. Also, diabetes was found to be more common in males than females as has been indicated in the earlier studies.

‘Our study has identified hotspot districts having a high prevalence of diabetes and recommended them to be targeted in public health programs,’ said Dr. Preeti Dhillon, author of the study and Assistant Professor at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. The analysis showed that 6.9% of adults in India between the age of 15-49 years have diabetes. Among the states and union territories, diabetes is highly prevalent in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while the least in Rajasthan. The prevalence of disease was found to be more in districts that are close to the coastal areas. ‘The high prevalence of diabetes in Andamans and Lakshadweep is of interest as this has not been reported earlier and it would be worthwhile exploring whether any genetic or environmental factors contribute to this,’ commented Dr. V Mohan, Director, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. Though he was not associated with the study.

Also Read: Deja vu – International Yoga Day

Dr. Anoop Misra, Vice President, Diabetes Foundation (India), commented that while this study provided new information about dietary context and prevalence of diabetes, it must be understood that diabetes is a multifactorial disease. Genetics, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and other lifestyle factors should be taken into consideration before establishing conclusive links. Food intake is a continuously changing and dynamic process and cannot be completely captured in a cross-sectional snapshot. He agreed, however, that high protein intake is needed for Indians as it boosts glucose metabolism in muscles reducing incidences of diabetes. The research team at IIPS included Koustav Ghosh and Gopal Agrawal apart from Dr. Dhillon. The results of this study have been published in the Journal of Public Health.

Contrary to popular belief, not only obese and overweight but also nonobese and lean persons may be prone to type 2 diabetes. A recent study has found that while most diabetics in the West are also overweight and obese, in India nearly 20 to 30 percent suffering from diabetes are non-obese and even some are lean.

The incidence of type 2 diabetes has been showing an upward trend in India and elsewhere in the world. This basically arises due to insulin resistance. Increasing obesity and sedentary lifestyle are considered to be the main pivotal factors for insulin resistance and consequent diabetes. However, the new study has busted the myth that increasing obesity alone is the main causative factor.

Insulin resistance occurs when the cells in muscles, body fat and liver start resisting the signal that the insulin hormone is trying to send out to get glucose (also known as body sugar, which is the main source of body’s fuel) out of the bloodstream and put it into the cells. Insulin resistance leads to diabetes, which in medical parlance is known as type 2 diabetes mellitus or T2DM.

Actually, beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin also release the C-peptide-a polypeptide composing of 31 amino acids. Although C-peptide does not actually affect the blood sugar of a person, the doctors can measure its level to figure out how much insulin the person’s body is making.

What made researchers measure the C-peptide levels along with insulin levels in the diabetics under study? This is because C-peptide gets secreted at a more constant rate across time durations as compared to the insulin secretion. Also, C-peptide levels are more stable compared to the insulin levels (its half-life is nearly six times that of insulin)which facilitates testing of beta cells’ response, the study has pointed out. The results revealed that the persons included in the study had largely the features of adiposity characterised by high body fat, abdominal fat and fatty liver condition, which may not be visible from outside.

The study has concluded that nonobese (BMI below 25) and even lean (BMI below 19) Indians have high body fat, excess fat in the liver and skeletal muscles and lesser skeletal muscle mass. In particular, they have ectopic fat in the liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and pancreas (nonalcoholic pancreas disease), which may contribute to insulin resistance leading to diabetes even in young age.

Along with high body fat and visceral fat, researchers also found elevated levels of insulin and C-peptide in the 87 diabetic patients studied by them. Such patients would benefit better from pharmacotherapy using insulin sensitizers or weight loss therapy, the study noted.

Summarising the outcome of the study, Dr. Anoop Misra, chairman Fortis C-DOC who led the study, told India Science Wire: “Indians have normal weight-high body fat and low muscle mass. They are not overtly obese but have not only high body fat but fat which is located in the crucial organs of metabolism, i.e., liver and pancreas. Once this occurs, the action of the insulin hormone becomes jeopardized, and blood sugar startsincreasing.”

“Indian physicians should urge patients to lose weight even when they are in normal body mass index (BMI) category to maintain body habitus at leaner side. This could prevent diabetes in those who do not have it yet, and blood sugar levels are better managed in patients with diabetes.” he added.

Life on Earth is adapted to the rotation of our planet. For many years we have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal, biological clock that helps them anticipate and adapt to the regular rhythm of the day. But how does this clock actually work? Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young were able to peek inside our biological clock and elucidate its inner workings. Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolutions.

Using fruit flies as a model Honored for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm organism, this year’s Nobel laureates isolated a gene that controls the normal daily biological rhythm. They showed that this gene encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the night, and is then degraded during the day. Subsequently, they identified additional protein components of this machinery, exposing the mechanism governing the self-sustaining clockwork inside the cell. We now recognize that biological clocks function by the same principles in cells of other multi-cellular organisms, including humans.

With exquisite precision, our inner clock adapts our physiology to the dramatically different phases of the day. The clock regulates critical functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism. Our wellbeing is affected when there is a temporary mismatch between our external environment and this internal biological clock, for example when we travel across several time zones and experience “jet lag”. There are also indications that chronic misalignment between our lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by our inner timekeeper is associated with increased risk for various diseases.

Our inner clock

Most living organisms anticipate and adapt to daily changes in the environment. During the 18th century, the astronomer Jean Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan studied mimosa plants, and found that the leaves opened towards the sun during daytime and closed at dusk. He wondered what would happen if the plant was placed in constant darkness. He found that independent of daily sunlight the leaves continued to follow their normal daily oscillation (See figure). Plants seemed to have their own biological clock.

Other researchers found that not only plants, but also animals and humans, have a biological clock that helps to prepare our physiology for the fluctuations of the day. This regular adaptation is referred to as the circadianrhythm, originating from the Latin words circa meaning “around” and diesmeaning “day”. But just how our internal circadian biological clock worked remained a mystery.

Identification of a clock gene

During the 1970’s, Seymour Benzer and his student Ronald Konopka asked whether it would be possible to identify genes that control the circadian rhythm in fruit flies. They demonstrated that mutations in an unknown gene disrupted the circadian clock of flies. They named this gene period. But how could this gene influence the circadian rhythm?

This year’s Nobel Laureates, who were also studying fruit flies, aimed to discover how the clock actually works. In 1984, Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash, working in close collaboration at Brandeis University in Boston, and Michael Young at the Rockefeller University in New York, succeeded in isolating the period gene. Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash then went on to discover that PER, the protein encoded by period, accumulated during the night and was degraded during the day. Thus, PER protein levels oscillate over a 24-hour cycle, in synchrony with the circadian rhythm.

A self-regulating clockwork mechanism

The next key goal was to understand how such circadian oscillations could be generated and sustained. Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash hypothesized that the PER protein blocked the activity of the period gene. They reasoned that by an inhibitory feedback loop, PER protein could prevent its own synthesis and thereby regulate its own level in a continuous, cyclic rhythm.

The model was tantalizing, but a few pieces of the puzzle were missing. To block the activity of the period gene, PER protein, which is produced in the cytoplasm, would have to reach the cell nucleus, where the genetic material is located. Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash had shown that PER protein builds up in the nucleus during night, but how did it get there? In 1994 Michael Young discovered a second clock gene, timeless, encoding the TIM protein that was required for a normal circadian rhythm. In elegant work, he showed that when TIM bound to PER, the two proteins were able to enter the cell nucleus where they blocked period gene activity to close the inhibitory feedback loop.

Such a regulatory feedback mechanism explained how this oscillation of cellular protein levels emerged, but questions lingered. What controlled the frequency of the oscillations? Michael Young identified yet another gene, double time, encoding the DBT protein that delayed the accumulation of the PER protein. This provided insight into how an oscillation is adjusted to more closely match a 24-hour cycle.

The paradigm-shifting discoveries by the laureates established key mechanistic principles for the biological clock. During the following years other molecular components of the clockwork mechanism were elucidated, explaining its stability and function. For example, this year’s laureates identified additional proteins required for the activation of the period gene, as well as for the mechanism by which light can synchronize the clock.

Keeping time on our human physiology

The biological clock is involved in many aspects of our complex physiology. We now know that all multicellular organisms, including humans, utilize a similar mechanism to control circadian rhythms. A large proportion of our genes are regulated by the biological clock and, consequently, a carefully calibrated circadian rhythm circadian biology has developed into a vast and highly dynamic research field, with implications for our health and wellbeing.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you know that people are in the midst of a low-carbohydrate craze! Low-carb diet books consistently top best-seller lists, food manufacturers are creating low-carb versions of familiar foods like bread and cookies, fast food chains are offering low-carb meals, and even beer companies have entered the fray with low-carb brews. Basic scientific truths, like the fact that carbs are actually important for your health, have been lost in all the marketing hoopla. Read on to find out the truth about the carbs:

How important are carbs?

If you don’t get enough, your mood, memory and sleep patterns are likely to be negatively affected, since carbs help create the brain chemical serotonin, which plays a key role in these processes. Exercise also becomes more difficult, since your muscles prefer to burn carbohydrates above all else, especially during aerobic workouts like running and cycling.

Does cutting carbs lead to weight loss?

As many people will attest to, low carb diets do help you lose weight rather quickly. But — and this is a big but — studies show that you will have most likely have given up on your diet by the end of a year, because after all, how many steak dinners can one woman take? In addition, it’s highly likely that you will eventually hit a serious plateau or put the lost weight back on. When you deprive yourself of easy fuel in the form of carbohydrates, your body begins breaking up muscle, converting muscle protein into glucose as a last resort. At first, this cannibalization of muscle mass causes you to lose water weight, but less muscle means fewer calories burned and an inevitable slowdown of your metabolism.

Which foods qualify as “low-carb”?

Good question — although there’s no clear answer. The packaging terms “low-carb” and “low net carbs” (carbs able to be digested by the body) have no official definitions, unlike, for example, the terms “low-fat” and “nonfat.” As a result, there are no rules as to what qualifies a food as low-carb. To create foods lower in carbohydrates than their regular versions, companies simply subtract fiber and sugar alcohol content, which aren’t really absorbed into the body anyway. In truth, a food said to have low net carbs often contains mthe same number of calories as its non-labeled counterpart. For example, one slice of low-carb Atkins bread has 60 calories and 8 grams of carbs, while one piece of regular “light” bread has 2 more grams of carbohydrates, but 10 fewer calories. Ultimately, it’s the number of calories you eat that affects your weight.

Does carb quality count?

The types of carbs you put into your body do make a difference for your health. The most healthful kinds are those that go through the least processing, including whole-grain foods like whole-wheat bread and pasta, oats and brown rice. These wholesome carbs have more fiber, which helps keep your blood sugar levels steady, leaves you feeling full longer, and aids in digestion. A recent study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that eating whole-grain carbs may protect women from developing diabetes.

What happens if you eat too many carbs?

As with any food, if you eat too much, you will gain weight. After all, weight gain occurs when you take in more calories than you expend; an excess of 3,500 calories creates one pound of fat. But in and of themselves, carbs are not fattening. They are a necessary part of your diet. If you eat healthfully and stay active, carbs will not make you fat.

Given its close link with both temperature and rainfall, it is possible to forecast outbreak of dengue. But for such disease forecasting to be effective it should be based on models specific for different climatic zones in the country, a new study has shown. The study has been jointly done by the Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, in collaboration with scientists at the University of Liverpool.

Scientists have reached this conclusion after evaluating the relationship of climatic factors in the spread of dengue in different climatic zones in the country – Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Kerala. They focused on changes in a factor called ‘extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of the dengue virus by taking into account daily and monthly mean temperatures in these areas.
The extrinsic incubation period (EIP) is the time taken for incubation of the virus in the mosquito. During this period, after the mosquito draws virus rich blood meal, the virus escapes the gut and passes through the mosquito’s body and reaches it salivary glands. Once this happens, the mosquito is infectious and capable of transmitting the virus to a human host.

It has been found that climatic conditions play an important role in EIP. Lower temperatures (17–18 °C) result in longer EIPs thereby leading to decreased virus transmission. With increasing temperatures, feeding increases because of enhanced metabolism of the mosquito, leading to shorter EIPs. Even a 5-day decrease in the incubation period can hike transmission rate by three times, and with an increase in temperature from 17 to 30 °C, dengue transmission increases fourfold. However, a further increase in temperature beyond 35 °C is detrimental to the mosquito survival.
Dr. Shikha T. Malik The researchers observed that except for Gujarat which comprises of arid regions, there was a strong correlation between rainfall and dengue disease burden.

The study found that Kerala being warm (temperature range 23.5-30°C) and wet and with short EIPs (9-14 days) experiences the highest number of dengue cases. It has been found that EIP is the shortest during the monsoon season in most states and therefore there is an enhanced risk of dengue during this time.

This climate-based dengue forecasting model could help in planning effective and efficient disease control operations well in advance and optimize the use of resources meticulously.

With changes in temperature affecting the extrinsic incubation period of the virus, future changes in the climate might have a substantial effect on dengue and other vector borne disease burden in India. “Though such methods are in vogue for disease control operations, we are still in the initial stages of implementation of such strategic control methods,” Dr Rao told India Science Wire. Factors such as population density and migration also need to be included for future risk assessment studies. The study was published in journal Emerging Microbes & Infections.

Ayurveda is generally understood as ‘Science of life’ translating ‘Ayuh (r)’as life and ‘Veda’ as science. Ayurveda is an ancient system of life and also the oldest surviving medical system in the world. Dating back almost 5000 years, it is also considered to be an ancient science of healing that enhances longevity. It has evolved from the quest to have a happy life, through a deep understanding of creation and its maintenance, perceived and conceived by the rishis or seers of ancient India. Ayurveda emphasizes upon life in general with bit more emphasis on human life.

Its influence can be found in many ancient traditional methods of healing including Tibetan, Greek, and Chinese medicines thus making it the ‘mother of healing’.

The fundamentals on which the Ayurvedic system is based are essentially true for all ages and so can be easily adopted time after time, century after century. The philosophy of Ayurveda teaches a series of conceptual systems characterized by balance and disorder, health and disease. It teaches that am person’s mental, emotional and spiritual being are all interconnected and any kind of imbalance between them results in health disorder and diseases. Therefore, to be healthy, harmony must exist between the purpose for healing, thoughts, feelings and physical action.

Health and disease are defined in a very special way in Ayurveda. Ayurveda’s central tenant is that life is a manifestation of mind, body, soul and spirit. Body and mind are prone to suffering while the spirit is free of any such trappings of life. Thus to remain healthy and happy, efforts are required to be made in the direction of maintaining harmony among all these elements and only then can one get closer to the goal of longevity and disease free life.

Ayurvedic science is not merely a traditional Indian form of medicine but a perennial naturopathic system of healthcare that has survived the test of time as well as onslaught of modern science and methods of treatments. Based on wisdom acquired through the centuries, the main aim of Ayurvedic science is to achieve perfect health by creating an equilibrium of perfect harmony between human body and the environment it habitats.

Ayurveda is also known as the science of living a healthy and disease free life. It is built on the premise that in olden days, man used to live close to nature and whenever he got exposed to some disease, he used to cure himself using resources and material provided by the Mother Nature. It therefore would not be wrong to say that Ayurveda charts out a health patter based on nature and its natural resources.

The Vedic philosophy believes that human beings are all a part of nature. Just as animals and plants are interdependent on each other to create balance within their beings, there is a concurrent and inherent connection between the universe and human beings. The complex world that the human beings reside in, is perpetually exposed to environmental changes. Any amount of change in weather, lifestyle, diet, work, emotions and relationships can easily tip the balance and negatively influence an individual’s state of mind, body and soul.

Ayurveda calls for a complete harmony of human body with the elements of nature and the surrounding environment for a stress free and healthy life. The Ayurvedic science does not merely deal with medical science but its scope goes much beyond the universe of the conventional science. It also includes factors like herbal medicine, body works, and surgery apart from social, psychological, ethical, spiritual and intellectual life of human beings.

According to Ayurveda, each one of us has a unique mix of three body principals that constitutes our mental, physical and spiritual well-being. These three principals are known as doshas, which are further classified as Vatta (air ether), Kapha (water-earth) and Pitta (water). But each individual has its own unique constitution that is usually governed by one or two of the doshas predominantly. It means that that our Ayurvedic constitution is mainly be either of these doshas or a mixed constitution of two doshas like Vatta & Kapa, Kapa & Pitta or Vatta & Pitta.

Ayurvedic Medicines are fast gaining popularity across the world. One of the major reasons for it being that Ayurveda seeks to normalize body functions with varied techniques including advice on food and activity, internal herbal preparations, purification treatments (panchakarma), and surgical methods (shalya chikitsa).

Ayurveda is based on the belief that the delicate balance of mind, body and spirit determines health and wellness of the body. The goal of Ayurveda is prevention as well as promotion of the body’s own capacity for maintenance and balance. Ayurvedic medicines are non-invasive and non-toxic in nature and therefore are free from any side effects.

Using Ayurvedic medicines in your daily life enables you to re-establish balance and harmony in body’s system, aids in detoxification and cleansing of the body by removing accumulated toxins and normalize body’s functions. Products made using Ayurvedic plants have a stronger action on the body as they help in stabilizing the doshas.

Tulsi, Guduchi, Ajwain, Brahmi, Shilajit and Ashwagandha etc., are some of the most commonly used herbs in Ayurvedic preparations. Each of these herbs or spices hold a multitude of benefits — for the mind, body, and spirit and can be easily used internally or externally, depending on the need.

The daily activities of life in the modern world systematically wear us down and speed up the aging process. Ayurveda maintains it is crucial to practice daily rejuvenative regimens to counteract the stressful wear and tear of everyday life. According to Ayurveda the most important rejuvenative routines for your life are:

Going to bed by 10:00 PM. This simple habit is one of the most powerful techniques for health and longevity, according to Going to bed by 10:00 PM. This simple habit is one of the most powerful techniques for health and longevity, according to Maharishi Ayurveda.

Meditate daily any meditation that does not involve concentration (which has been shown to increase anxiety) can be very helpful. I highly recommend the twice-daily deep rest and enlivenment of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, whose benefits have been verified by over 700 published research studies.

Eat organic, whole fresh food that is freshly prepared. There is an Ayurvedic saying: “Without proper diet. Medicine is of no use. With proper diet, medicine is of no need.” Be sure to avoid those leftovers, processed and microwaved foods for better nutrition and vitality.
