Biomimicry in healthcare is more than just copying nature; it’s about learning from how living organisms solve problems and applying these principles to create innovative medical solutions. The results are smarter, more efficient, and sometimes awe-inspiring technologies.

What is Biomimicry in Healthcare?

Biomimicry in healthcare involves turning nature’s designs into tools, treatments, or devices that improve human health. It’s like learning from billions of years of evolution to solve modern medical challenges. From surgical adhesives inspired by gecko feet to drug delivery systems that mimic viruses, nature is now an unlikely mentor to medicine.

Nature-Inspired Healthcare Innovations

Smarter Drug Delivery
Viruses are masters of entering cells.
Shaping the Future of Indian Healthcare: Strategy, Sustainability, and Smart Systems

At the forefront of transforming healthcare delivery in India is a new wave of leadership focused on sustainable systems, strategic innovation, and long-term impact. One such voice is Ankita Agarwal, Vice President of Strategy and Special Projects at Marengo Asia Hospital, whose work is centered on redefining how hospitals operate — not just for today, but for the future.

In a candid exchange at the InnoHEALTH Conference 2024, she shared insights into building resilient healthcare ecosystems, integrating artificial intelligence meaningfully, and bridging the urban-rural divide through collaborative approaches.

Redefining Sustainability in Healthcare

Sustainability in healthcare often brings to mind cost-cutting or eco-friendly practices, but the reality goes much deeper. As Ankita explains, it’s about creating systems that endure and deliver quality care independently. “Sustainability means putting in place the right processes, infrastructure, and skilled staff — so that even if we exit a project, the hospital continues delivering high-quality care on its own,” she said.

This approach includes continuous staff training, implementation of standardized clinical protocols, and alignment with global quality benchmarks such as NABH and JCI. The focus is on enabling partner hospitals to become self-reliant, capable of maintaining high standards without constant external support.

Strategic Pillars for Long-Term Impact

To ensure healthcare facilities can operate efficiently and consistently, strategic planning is anchored around four key areas: people, processes, infrastructure, and technology. This translates into:

Training medical staff to handle complex procedures with confidence.

Establishing accreditation through recognized national and international bodies.

Implementing clinical protocols for consistent and safe patient outcomes.

Scaling capabilities in specialized areas to meet growing demand.

Equity in Healthcare: Closing the Urban-Rural Divide

One of the most pressing challenges in Indian healthcare is access — especially in rural and underserved regions. Addressing this, Ankita highlighted the importance of private-public collaboration. “We are open to working with government centers and standalone facilities. Through exposure, training, and knowledge transfer, we can help bring equitable healthcare to underserved regions,” she shared.

Rather than creating dependency, the goal is to empower local teams by upskilling staff and building capacity — ensuring improvements are sustainable over time.

AI in Hospitals: A Collaborative Tool

While artificial intelligence is often seen as a disruptor, in the healthcare context, it’s increasingly being embraced as a powerful support system. “Doctors are welcoming AI because it enhances their productivity,” Ankita noted. Whether it’s expediting diagnostic processes or helping manage high patient volumes, AI is proving to be a valuable ally.

“With validated, clinically approved tools, a doctor who used to see 50 patients a day can now manage 80 — without sacrificing quality,” she explained. In a landscape facing a growing disease burden and aging population, AI helps bridge the gap between demand and available expertise.

Looking Ahead: A Scalable, Resilient Vision

The vision is clear — build healthcare systems that are resilient, scalable, and accessible to all. By focusing on sustainable infrastructure, meaningful tech integration, and inclusive training, this approach is setting a new standard for healthcare delivery.

What emerges is a model rooted in empathy, backed by strategy, and driven by the belief that quality healthcare should be a universal standard, not a privilege.

Introduction

In an era where healthcare challenges are becoming increasingly complex, innovation and sustainability have emerged as crucial pillars in public health. At the InnoHealth Conference 2024, Dr. Pushkar Kumar, a seasoned physician, pathologist, and public health expert, shared valuable insights into the evolving landscape of public health, AI-driven capacity building, and sustainable healthcare solutions.

The Role of Innovation in Healthcare

Dr. Kumar emphasized that innovation is not limited to medical advancements but extends to operational efficiency, patient management, and data-driven decision-making. Having been associated with InnoHealth for several years, he noted that innovation is a key driver of progress in healthcare, touching everything from patient care to administrative processes like billing and counseling services.

“Innovations have to be at the core of healthcare. The field is evolving rapidly, and technology is playing an integral role in improving patient outcomes and accessibility,” Dr. Kumar stated.

AI and Its Growing Influence in Public Health

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making significant strides in the healthcare industry, and Dr. Kumar highlighted its growing importance in public health, particularly at the grassroots level. While acknowledging some concerns about AI’s overreach, he pointed out its numerous benefits, including improved accessibility, streamlined record-keeping, and enhanced follow-up care.

“AI has helped in overcoming accessibility barriers, especially in rural areas. It allows us to maintain better records, track patient progress, and reach a wider audience at a lower cost,” he explained.

AI has also revolutionized capacity building in public health, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. With restrictions limiting physical interactions, AI-driven virtual training sessions enabled healthcare professionals to continue learning and enhancing their skills remotely. According to Dr. Kumar, AI has not only reduced training costs but also expanded the reach of educational programs to previously underserved areas.

Sustainability Models in Public Health Training

Having spent a decade working with the Government of India before transitioning to the NGO sector, Dr. Kumar shared his perspective on the challenges of funding and sustainability in public health initiatives. He noted that while government-backed projects have access to extensive resources, NGOs must explore alternative funding models to sustain their programs.

“To run any program effectively, funding is necessary. However, leveraging technology allows us to reach a larger audience with minimal expenditure. Sustainability lies in creating value-driven models that maximize impact with limited resources,” he explained.

Dr. Kumar emphasized the need for financially sustainable training programs where participants contribute a small fee, reducing dependency on external funding. One successful approach has been the use of technology-driven remote training, which enables physicians and healthcare workers to receive quality education without incurring travel costs.

Making Healthcare More Accessible and Affordable

Dr. Kumar stressed that affordability should not be a barrier to quality healthcare. By adopting innovative models and utilizing existing resources efficiently, healthcare professionals can create a more inclusive system that caters to underserved populations.

Dr. Mishra emphasises the importance of having professionally qualified hospital administrators, which has significantly improved the efficiency and management of hospitals. Institutions like IIHMR, Symbiosis, and TISS Mumbai are now producing brilliant hospital administrators, highlighting the growth and importance of this field.

Effective Coordination and Use of Technology

Effective coordination among different departments within a healthcare facility requires a dedicated team and the right tools. Modern hospitals utilize software and dashboards to monitor progress and facilitate coordination. Dr. Mishra stresses the importance of management by walking around, interacting with people, and taking facility rounds to understand and address actual problems. Digital tools complement these efforts by providing real-time data and monitoring capabilities.

Benefits of Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

The integration of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is crucial for segregating and analyzing patient data efficiently. EMRs allow quick retrieval of patient information, facilitating research and improving patient care. Despite some resistance from doctors accustomed to handwritten records, the shift to EMRs is essential for reducing errors and enhancing the accuracy of medical records. Dr. Mishra advocates for the widespread adoption of EMRs, acknowledging the challenges but emphasising the long-term benefits.

Challenges and Solutions in Digital Health Records

While digitalization brings numerous benefits, it also raises concerns about data security and patient confidentiality. Dr. Mishra acknowledges that security issues exist with both hard copies and digital records. However, electronic records often provide better security through access controls and change logs. Cloud-based solutions further enhance the safety and accessibility of medical records.

Innovations in Healthcare Technology

Dr. Mishra highlights the potential of artificial intelligence and robotic systems in healthcare. These technologies promise to revolutionize medical specialties and treatment methods. However, he cautions against over-dependence on technology, advocating for a balanced approach that leverages technological advancements while maintaining the human element in patient care.

Health Insurance and Healthcare Delivery

Health insurance plays a vital role in shaping healthcare delivery and management. Dr. Mishra praises the Ayushman Bharat scheme but suggests making health insurance mandatory in India. This would prevent people from losing their valuables for medical treatment and ensure access to quality healthcare. He also calls for rationalizing insurance rates to ensure that hospitals can provide quality services without financial strain.

Standardization of Hospital Rates

The standardization of hospital rates, particularly aligning them with CGHS rates, is a contentious issue. Dr. Mishra believes that while rationalization is beneficial, making everything at CGHS rates is impractical. He suggests revising CGHS rates to reflect market conditions better and ensuring that hospitals are not forced to compromise on service quality.

Sustainable Practices in Healthcare

Sustainability in healthcare involves investing wisely and focusing on actual treatment rather than building extravagant facilities. Dr. Mishra advocates for medium-level hospitals with competent doctors who can provide quality care without exorbitant costs. Hospitals should also be conscious of resource usage, particularly in supply management, to minimize waste and reduce operational costs.

Reintroduction of Indian Medical Services

The reintroduction of Indian Medical Services (IMS) is seen as a positive step, but Dr. Mishra highlights the need for adequate infrastructure and support for doctors in remote locations. To fully utilize their talent, IMS officers should be provided with facilities comparable to those of IAS officers, ensuring they can perform effectively and efficiently.

Advice for Aspiring Healthcare Administrators

Dr. Mishra advises young students entering the field of healthcare administration to embrace the challenges and commit to continuous learning. He emphasizes the importance of financial and technology management skills, effective communication, and a patient-centric approach. Aspiring administrators should avoid a bossy attitude and focus on being facilitators and coordinators, supporting the doctors and nurses who are the backbone of any hospital.
