“H2O: A Biography of Water” by Philip Ball is an intriguing exploration of one of the most essential and ubiquitous substances on Earth: water. In this book, Ball delves deep into the science, history, and cultural significance of water, presenting a comprehensive account that will captivate both scientists and general readers alike.

One of the most compelling aspects of “H2O” is Ball’s ability to blend scientific rigor with accessible storytelling. He covers a vast array of topics related to water, from its unique chemical properties and role in biological processes to its impact on human civilization and the environment. Throughout the book, Ball explains complex scientific concepts in a clear and engaging manner, making it easy for readers of all backgrounds to grasp the significance of water in our world.

Moreover, Ball’s exploration of water goes beyond its scientific aspects. He also delves into the cultural and historical dimensions of water, examining its symbolism in art, literature, religion, and mythology. By weaving together these different perspectives, Ball provides a holistic view of water as more than just a chemical compound, but as a fundamental element that shapes human existence and culture.

Another standout feature of “H2O” is Ball’s interdisciplinary approach. Drawing from physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and more, he paints a multifaceted portrait of water that highlights its interconnectedness with various scientific disciplines. This interdisciplinary perspective adds depth to the narrative and underscores the importance of studying water from a comprehensive, holistic standpoint.

Overall, “H2O: A Biography of Water” is a masterful work that educates, entertains, and inspires. Whether you’re interested in science, history, or simply curious about the world around you, this book offers a rich tapestry of knowledge about water and its profound impact on life. Philip Ball’s eloquent prose and insightful analysis make “H2O” a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of this essential and enigmatic substance.

This year’s World Environment Day theme was focused on restoring ecosystems. This was an ideal time to pause and think about our role in harbouring and reviving the ecosystem. The ecosystem was harmed by human intervention and rapid urbanisation. There is always a discussion to restore the ecosystem and various strategies were put in place to revive the already dilapidated ecosystem. There is a long-term goal approach needed to restore the ecosystem where the local conditions along with the community knowledge will help in creating a strong foundation for reviving the ecosystem. Water is the most important factor that imparts an important entity in the ecosystem. The conservation and management of the ecosystem will restore our environment and initiate the process of healing.

In India, groundwater has been extensively used with an extraction of 253 billion cubic meter per year. 25% of the groundwater extraction leads to the depletion of water tables across the nation and another major factor is the rapid unplanned urbanization that results from increased level of water pollution in the form of domestic or industrial wastewater, untreated sewage wastewater, unscientific approach of drainage system and conversion of water bodies into dumping yards. All these factors lead to the depletion of entire ecosystems. The amalgamation of traditional methods and innovative technology propels a substantial change and scope for restoration. To conserve the water there is a need for judicious use of the available natural resources. The need for industry is there for the economic development of the nation but advanced treatment technologies should be incorporated to safeguard the aquatic ecosystem from harmful persistent residual pollutants present in the treated water.

The rapid urbanization has already sealed many of the natural water bodies and recently there was a sudden drowning of a car in a pit in the parking area in Mumbai, India as there used to be a well which was sealed to give way for concrete pavement.

The conventional agriculture has also caused havoc for the water resources and has disturbed the water table level. The excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides leaves behind the residues which eventually leaches to the groundwater or there is a run-off of agricultural wastewater in the nearby surface water. The streams and water bodies are bearing the brunt by giving rise to algal blooms in order to manifest the harmful toxic chemicals used to increase the yield of crops and meet the demands of the population. The eutrophication solicits its presence and depletes the dissolved oxygen leading to the death of aquatic organisms. We need to stop the rapid siltation also as the deforested land has a loosened soil which finds its solace by depositing at the bottom of the water bodies like lakes and eventually drying them.

According to United Nations (UN) studies nearly 30% of the natural water ecosystem has disappeared since 1970, their restoration alongwith the forest will help to save the water utilities around the countries and curtail the water treatment costs. With a hope to revive the past and secure the future for our next generations the restoration of the environment will be a boon!

Authors say modern medicine is founded on the scientific pursuit for knowledge about the human body and its pathologies. Science builds theories and tests them against evidence. The scientific method should now be applied to the design of hospitals and health service systems. This is the rationale for evidence – based design.

According to authors, lean and innovation complement each other. Lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources. Innovation is a process of translating an idea into goods or services that create value for which customer is ready to pay. The General Hospital is still a valid concept and is not going to disappear anytime soon, particularly in parts of the world where public health is poor, resources are scarce, and a majority of people is underserved. While visions are always welcome, the task at hand, and the theme of this book, is to improve on the Dominant Design, the standard General Hospital.

Evidence-based design (EBD) emphasizes credible evidence to influence design. It works on well-defined problems, applies a multidisciplinary perspective, involves users and customers, establishes quantitative performance measures for critical variables, and uses tests and simulations throughout the design process.

Prof. Lillrank along with Riikka-Leena Leskelä and Olli Tolkki say the hospital has traditionally been seen as a production site like a factory where flows of material, people, energy and information combine with fixed assets. In modern manufacturing, the factory has evolved into supply networks. In a similar vein, the modern hospital is seen as a node in a regional service system. A hospital design initiative should therefore begin with a master plan that defines the hospital’s place and role in a broader health service system.

Dr. Singh in a chapter on ‘Patient First, Functions Next and Design Later’ along with Mr. S K Biswas says the evolution of hospital design principles has gone through stages.

The first was ‘functions follow design’, as services had to be adapted to whatever structures were available. Next came ‘design follows functions’. Various professional groups lined out their requirements in terms of floor space and layout. More recently, the concept ‘Design follows first patients, then functions’ has been adopted. The emphasis now is on integrating the needs of patients, hospital functions, and functionaries in hospital design.

In a chapter, ‘Green Hospitals and Sustainable solution to Healthcare Facility’, Mr. Rajeev Boudhankar says as important parts of the modern urban landscape, hospitals must adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable designs and technologies. Green hospitals use energy, water, materials and land more efficiently than conventional buildings.

With more natural light and better air quality, green buildings contribute to improved health, comfort, and productivity. The LEED 2009 for Healthcare Green Building Rating System is a set of performance standards for certifying healthcare facilities.

In ‘Designing a Patient-centric Healthcare Facility Using Lean Methodology’, Mr. John Gallagher, Kim Chaney and Ron Kwon say 2P (Process Preparation) is a Lean design tool that helps to organize the flow of activity in a way that results in the least amount of waste. This chapter details how it worked when Concord Hillside Medical Associates, a multi-specialty group practice part of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates near Boston, applied it in a major facility design project.

Likewise, in an article on ‘Creating safer healthcare environments using an evidence-based design process, Dr. Anjali Joseph, Ellen Taylor and Xiaobo Quan say a growing body of research shows that the healthcare built environment impacts safety outcomes such as infections, medication errors, falls, and staff injuries. Latent conditions that adversely impact patient safety are built into the physical environment during the planning, design, and construction phases. Design decisions should be proactively evaluated by engaging users from different disciplines such as infection control, nursing, risk managers, and environmental services. Emerging tools such as the Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) toolkit provide a structured way to apply evidence-based design to improve patient safety.

Dr. Singh and Dr. Biswas in another chapter on ‘Evidence Based Design in Hospitals – Theory to Implementation’ opine that the principles of Lean Healthcare support Evidence Based Design. Lean calls for the identification of all major stakeholders and specifying what they consider valuable. Stakeholder value can be grouped into the basic categories tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. When these requirements are not met, processes create waste.

EBD analyze the constraints that need to be addressed. The design process covers several stages, initial hypothetical design, process design, service design, and empirical design. These principles are detailed in a case in a hospital in Kolkata.

On Virtual Hospitals of Future, IT expert Sachin Gaur says the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), particularly smart and wearable devices, have the potential to break constraints of time and location. Physical installations may turn virtual, and centralized services may be decentralized. Assessing the potential of new technologies, the CIMO -methodology of Evaluation Science can be employed. It asks the questions, what is the context in which technology is applied through what kinds of interventions, and which mechanisms are activated to produce which outcomes?

On ‘Redefining Healthcare of Tomorrow in Smart City’, Dr Singh and Ms. Nimisha Singh say the three pillars of the smart city are-people, process, technology, and the information flows that bind them together as an optimized whole. The Smart Cities Mission under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an initiative towards urbanization. Smart cities require smart healthcare.

With the Internet of things (IoT), layers of smartness are being added to the hospitals, such as remote monitoring, chronic disease management, medication management, patient self-management, and workflow management.

In a Chapter titled ‘Delivering Inclusive Intelligent Healthcare’ by Innovative and Comprehensive e-Health System, Dr. Kuo Shou-Jen and Lai Chien-Wen aver that the chapter is based on a case study of Changhua Christian Healthcare System (CCH), Taiwan. CCH has been a pioneer in implementing sophisticated new technologies. The case emphasizes the importance of the combination of high tech with human touch.

In a chapter on ‘Planning Safe Hospitals’, Ms. Sushma Guleria says that the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 (HFA) spells out the challenge to substantially reduce the impact of disasters and to make risk reduction an essential component of development policies and programs. Risk reduction planning should be integrated into the health sector to make hospitals safe from disasters and strengthen their capacity to remain functional in disaster situations. Hospitals need to have disaster management plans and to evaluate their performance by implementing the Hospital Safety Index used widely to gather information for sound decision making.

In an article on ‘Designing Innovative Facilities: Contamination & Security Hazards at Hospitals’, Dr. Singh along with Dr. Raman Chawala emphasis on the danger of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) related terrorism which pose a contamination threat to healthcare institutions. Designing innovative resilience can provide long term and effective solutions by establishing a rigorous framework that can accelerate adaptation and ability to recover from any known and unknown contamination security and safety hazards.

‘Adapt or Obsolesce: The evolution of the Singapore Health System’, Matthew Saunders said Singapore is an advanced country of small size with a single party dominated political system. This has made it agile and able to respond quickly to changing circumstance in ways that differ from larger and more complex polities. Singapore faces the same challenges as other developing countries, including ageing society, non-communicable diseases and healthcare cost inflation, while it is well positioned to implement advanced technologies, such as electronic patient records and smart solutions. Singapore highlights the systemic nature of healthcare, where service production, facility design, finance, and regulation require innovative approaches to integration.

Dr. B. R. Shetty, Founder and Chairman, NMC Healthcare, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in his foreword said, “The book is a timely effort to discuss various concepts and tools to reduce delivery costs and maintain high quality by the means of planning a hospital with an eye on operations. It details experiences from around the globe. The authors strive to integrate several strains of thought: Lean, Innovation, Patient Centricity, and Evidence–based designs. This is what the healthcare industry needs.

The phenomenon of urban heat islands, in which concrete and built areas experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas, may get accentuated with rapid urbanization. This is the conclusion of a new study of urban areas selected for development of smart cities. The study, which covered 89 of 100 areas selected for development of smart cities, has found that agriculture and irrigation are two dominant drivers of urban heat islands or UHI in India. In addition, significant presence of atmospheric aerosols – mainly pollutants – over urban areas can influence UHI.

Moisture from irrigation canals and agriculture fields play a key role in keeping rural areas surrounding cities much cooler that urban areas, resulting cities becoming heat islands. In a heat island, temperature could be 1 to 6 degrees higher than surrounding areas. Remote sensing data and climate modelling were used to evaluate UHI across the country.

When the surrounding of non-urban areas have no agriculture during summer, cities are relatively cooler during daytime. However, if the non-urban areas are under irrigated agriculture, cities are warmer than surroundings. This means UHI effect during day time is mainly driven by agriculture and irrigation. However, in the night-time, cities are significantly warmer than surroundings in both winter and summer seasons. Night time urban heat is mainly driven by the amount of heat stored in buildings and other impervious surfaces.

Urban areas located in highly irrigated regions – Indo-Gangetic Plain and north-west India (Haryana and Punjab) – show UHI intensity of 3 to 5 degrees. During summer season (April and May), when air temperature is at the peak, land surface temperature becomes is higher than that of the post monsoon season in absence of agricultural operations. Moreover, amount of moisture and vegetation in non-urban areas are also limited as crops are largely harvested by the end of March and soil moisture is depleted due to high atmospheric water demands, the study said.

“While urban areas have experienced increased number of heat waves and temperature extremes in recent past, urban heat island effect driven by rapid urbanization can further worsen extreme hot conditions in cities,” pointed out Dr Vimal Mishra, a scientist at the Water and Climate Lab of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, which did the study. The results of the study appeared in journal Scientific Reports on Wednesday.

The development of smart cities will result in rapid growth in urban infrastructure and population, leading to increases in UHI intensity. “Our results can provide policy insights for development of smart cities,” Dr Mishra said. “Considering night-time heating which could be significant during heat waves, measures such as passive cooling should be used. Building materials that absorb less heat and are sustainable can reduce the amount of heating caused by stored heat.” The presence of water bodies and vegetation in cities can also help reduce additional nighttime heating in urban heat islands.

The study team included Rahul Kumar and Vimmal Mishra (IIT Gandhinagar); Jonathan Buzan and Matthew Huber (Purdue University, USA); Rohini Kumar (UFZ-Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany); and Drew Shindel (Duke University, USA).

Ayurveda is generally understood as ‘Science of life’ translating ‘Ayuh (r)’as life and ‘Veda’ as science. Ayurveda is an ancient system of life and also the oldest surviving medical system in the world. Dating back almost 5000 years, it is also considered to be an ancient science of healing that enhances longevity. It has evolved from the quest to have a happy life, through a deep understanding of creation and its maintenance, perceived and conceived by the rishis or seers of ancient India. Ayurveda emphasizes upon life in general with bit more emphasis on human life.

Its influence can be found in many ancient traditional methods of healing including Tibetan, Greek, and Chinese medicines thus making it the ‘mother of healing’.

The fundamentals on which the Ayurvedic system is based are essentially true for all ages and so can be easily adopted time after time, century after century. The philosophy of Ayurveda teaches a series of conceptual systems characterized by balance and disorder, health and disease. It teaches that am person’s mental, emotional and spiritual being are all interconnected and any kind of imbalance between them results in health disorder and diseases. Therefore, to be healthy, harmony must exist between the purpose for healing, thoughts, feelings and physical action.

Health and disease are defined in a very special way in Ayurveda. Ayurveda’s central tenant is that life is a manifestation of mind, body, soul and spirit. Body and mind are prone to suffering while the spirit is free of any such trappings of life. Thus to remain healthy and happy, efforts are required to be made in the direction of maintaining harmony among all these elements and only then can one get closer to the goal of longevity and disease free life.

Ayurvedic science is not merely a traditional Indian form of medicine but a perennial naturopathic system of healthcare that has survived the test of time as well as onslaught of modern science and methods of treatments. Based on wisdom acquired through the centuries, the main aim of Ayurvedic science is to achieve perfect health by creating an equilibrium of perfect harmony between human body and the environment it habitats.

Ayurveda is also known as the science of living a healthy and disease free life. It is built on the premise that in olden days, man used to live close to nature and whenever he got exposed to some disease, he used to cure himself using resources and material provided by the Mother Nature. It therefore would not be wrong to say that Ayurveda charts out a health patter based on nature and its natural resources.

The Vedic philosophy believes that human beings are all a part of nature. Just as animals and plants are interdependent on each other to create balance within their beings, there is a concurrent and inherent connection between the universe and human beings. The complex world that the human beings reside in, is perpetually exposed to environmental changes. Any amount of change in weather, lifestyle, diet, work, emotions and relationships can easily tip the balance and negatively influence an individual’s state of mind, body and soul.

Ayurveda calls for a complete harmony of human body with the elements of nature and the surrounding environment for a stress free and healthy life. The Ayurvedic science does not merely deal with medical science but its scope goes much beyond the universe of the conventional science. It also includes factors like herbal medicine, body works, and surgery apart from social, psychological, ethical, spiritual and intellectual life of human beings.

According to Ayurveda, each one of us has a unique mix of three body principals that constitutes our mental, physical and spiritual well-being. These three principals are known as doshas, which are further classified as Vatta (air ether), Kapha (water-earth) and Pitta (water). But each individual has its own unique constitution that is usually governed by one or two of the doshas predominantly. It means that that our Ayurvedic constitution is mainly be either of these doshas or a mixed constitution of two doshas like Vatta & Kapa, Kapa & Pitta or Vatta & Pitta.

Kapha governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body. It is the principle that holds the cells together and forms the muscle, fat, bone, and sinew. It controls weight, growth, lubrication for the joints and lungs, and formation of all the seven tissues — nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues. It helps build excellent stamina but when it goes out of balance it can also cause a person to become overweight, sleep excessively, and suffer from the problem of diabetes, asthma and depression.

Ayurvedic Medicines are fast gaining popularity across the world. One of the major reasons for it being that Ayurveda seeks to normalize body functions with varied techniques including advice on food and activity, internal herbal preparations, purification treatments (panchakarma), and surgical methods (shalya chikitsa).

Ayurveda is based on the belief that the delicate balance of mind, body and spirit determines health and wellness of the body. The goal of Ayurveda is prevention as well as promotion of the body’s own capacity for maintenance and balance. Ayurvedic medicines are non-invasive and non-toxic in nature and therefore are free from any side effects.

Using Ayurvedic medicines in your daily life enables you to re-establish balance and harmony in body’s system, aids in detoxification and cleansing of the body by removing accumulated toxins and normalize body’s functions. Products made using Ayurvedic plants have a stronger action on the body as they help in stabilizing the doshas.

Tulsi, Guduchi, Ajwain, Brahmi, Shilajit and Ashwagandha etc., are some of the most commonly used herbs in Ayurvedic preparations. Each of these herbs or spices hold a multitude of benefits — for the mind, body, and spirit and can be easily used internally or externally, depending on the need.

The daily activities of life in the modern world systematically wear us down and speed up the aging process. Ayurveda maintains it is crucial to practice daily rejuvenative regimens to counteract the stressful wear and tear of everyday life. According to Ayurveda the most important rejuvenative routines for your life are:

Going to bed by 10:00 PM. This simple habit is one of the most powerful techniques for health and longevity, according to Going to bed by 10:00 PM. This simple habit is one of the most powerful techniques for health and longevity, according to Maharishi Ayurveda.

Meditate daily any meditation that does not involve concentration (which has been shown to increase anxiety) can be very helpful. I highly recommend the twice-daily deep rest and enlivenment of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, whose benefits have been verified by over 700 published research studies.

Eat organic, whole fresh food that is freshly prepared. There is an Ayurvedic saying: “Without proper diet. Medicine is of no use. With proper diet, medicine is of no need.” Be sure to avoid those leftovers, processed and microwaved foods for better nutrition and vitality.
