Postpartum depression (PPD)is a serious condition which, when severe, can be life-threatening and can interfere with the mother-infant bond. Because of being undiagnosed in most of the cases, experts believe that the prevalence of postpartum depression could be at least twice as high as what current statistics reveal. Primary treatment for PPD cases is counseling and antidepressants, but some women do not respond to these therapies, compelling more research in this area of medicine.

Recently, the US FDA approved “Zulresso” (brexanolene) injection for intravenous use for the treatment of PPD in adult women, making it the first drug approved by FDA for PPD. This novel drug has been approved with a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy which is available to patients through a restricted distribution program at certified healthcare facilities where the healthcare provider can carefully monitor the patient. This therapy, administered around the clock for 60 hours, uses a neurosteroid to control the responses of the brain to stress. This treatment targets the signaling, thought to be hormone-sensitive postpartum depression and also shows benefits very quickly in comparison to traditional antidepressants which typically take two to four weeks to display an effect.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes which is a chronic, progressive condition in which the body does not make or use insulin normally, causing higher levels of glucose in the blood. The US FDA has approved a novel, dual-targeted treatment for type 2 diabetes ‘Mounjaro’ (tirzepatide) injection as an addition to diet and exercise.

Coronary heart diseases are a growing problem, posing a matter of global concern and a dynamic area where work is perpetually going on so as to bring something new to the table in better management and treatment of the disease. Working in this direction are two cardiologists from Italy, professors Bernardo Cortese and Antonio Colombo who claim that a drug-coated balloon is a superior option to stents in certain situations. It is particularly suitable when the patient is young with multiple blockages and is affected with conditions that may make angioplasty fitted with drug-eluting stents ineffective.

As per Dr. Cortese these balloons can be used in at least 40% of procedures ranging upto 70% if used by an expert. This world’s first Sirolimus drug coated balloon involves a drug and carrier complex to reach the inner layers of the vessel walls, acting like a reservoir for the long-term release of medication, thereby preventing the re-narrowing of a coronary artery.

India is fortunate enough to have these two expert cardiologists from Italy, as they are here to conduct programmes and workshops to educate professionals on the effective use of the drug-coated balloon technique for percutaneous coronary intervention. Concept Medical and C3 Research Foundation, Chennai recently hosted a training session on ‘DCB in PCI – Current concept and Future’ in which these experts spoke at length about the potential of this new drug-coated balloons and cases which were suitable for its usage specially patients with multiple blockages or those who need a longer stent. The session was attended by chennai’s leading interventional cardiologists and medical students.

High levels of cholesterol, specifically low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease. So in order to manage cardiac complications better, it is important to take care of one’s cholesterol levels. FDA approved ‘Inclisiran’, sold under the brand name ‘Leqvio’, is a medication for the treatment of people suffering from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, primary hyperlipidemia while on a maximum dose of statin therapy.

Inclisiran is an injectable, chemically synthesized long acting, small chain small interfering RNA that targets PCSK9 protein to lower plasma LDL cholesterol. The advantage of this medicine over statins is that it requires infrequent dosing (twice per year) and also provides sustained and effective LDL-C reduction in conjunction with statins. Its prolonged effect may help reduce medication noncompliance and is considered as a game changer for heart disease patients by a wide range of medical practitioners.

Switzerland-based multinational healthcare company, Roche offers its expertise in diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. Recently Roche got approval for laboratory based Elecsys SARS-COV-2 Antigen Test to facilitate high volume testing in India. This lab-based Elecsys SARS-COV-2 Antigen Test which had earlier received CE mark, has lately got the import licence from CDSCO.

This antigen test is performed by healthcare professionals, can be used as either an alternative or in conjunction with PCR testing. It is an immunoassay for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 present in the respiratory tract including nasopharynx and oropharynx for diagnosing symptomatic patients and exposed asymptomatic individuals.

To manage covid-19 effectively and contain community spread, robust diagnostic testing capacity is of utmost importance. Roche has more than 2000 instrument installations across India and with the high accuracy, high-throughput lab antigen test, it will boost up the testing capabilities of the Indian healthcare system. Roche ECLIA antigen assay is a next generation test which will be beneficial in reducing the burden on PCR testing, overcoming major limitations of rapid antigen tests by providing faster reporting, longer sample stability, full automation, no subjectivity and better sensitivity. German medical technology company, Vara which focuses on breast cancer screening and detection, has recently spread its wings across India. Today, breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects Indian women and the number of lives lost to this deadly disease in India is the second highest worldwide. Prevalence of breast cancer is very high in Mexico, Egypt and now India. Every four minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in India. Out of all the cancer cases which are diagnosed in India, nearly 14% is attributed to breast cancer.
