LVADs are mechanical devices which are implanted in patients with advanced heart failure to help heart pump blood more effectively. These devices seem to be a game changer and a boon for advanced heart failure cases who wait for donors.

LVADs are designed to serve as a bridge to transplantation or even offer a long-term solution known as destination therapy for those cases who are ineligible for heart transplants due to shortages in donors.

Analysis suggested, tea drinking might be protective against CRC (RR, 0.33) in an American subgroup while data from the UK (RR, 1.45) and Italian (RR, 1.15) subgroups had opposite results. Green tea was shown to lower CRC risk (RR, 0.05) as compared to black tea. Limitations of this study include high level of heterogeneity in the original studies and also variations in the type and quantity of tea consumed. The quality and design of the studies too was not well considered wherein some studies did not account for potentially important variables like diet and alcohol use.

It can be said that this meta- analysis suggests that tea consumption may not be linked to the development of CRC and these relationships still need to be confirmed by additional well-designed large prospective studies and randomized clinical trials.

It was observed that infants who were hospitalized with COVID-19 whose mothers were unvaccinated were more likely to need help breathing in comparison to infants whose mothers had been vaccinated. The authors mentioned that maternal vaccination during pregnancy provides some protection against COVID-19 related hospitalisations among infants particularly those who are less than three months old.

The data thus reveals, getting a COVID shot during pregnancy significantly reduces the chance that a baby will be hospitalized for COVID-19 but the limitation of the study was that any prior infection of mothers was not analysed including the unvaccinated mothers. It is also possible that infection-induced antibodies could provide some protection against COVID-19 hospitalizations. The latest data revealed that 47% of pregnant women reported getting a flu shot during the past flu season. Among women who had live birth, 54% had reported getting the Tdap vaccine to protect babies against whooping cough.

This makes it imperative to safeguard children, by preventing this technological reinvention and curbing the manipulation of youth through aggressive marketing tactics. There is also lack of awareness among teachers, children and parents about vaping which is primarily the use of e-cigarettes which leads to lung diseases and cardio-vascular issues. Keeping in mind the gravity of the situation, experts came up with many suggestions for educators and parents to prevent the use of gateway devices among children.

It was suggested to educate children about how marketing manipulated them into experimenting with electronic gateway devices. There is a need to reduce demand through appropriate and active communication with children, parents and educators. Awareness building exercises with multiple dimensions like highlighting children who do not vape as heroes or involving affected students or alumni in communication efforts. In medical colleges too, awareness needs to be created about these new-generation electronic vaping devices so that doctors are equipped with accurate information. We can incorporate behavioural indicators in report cards, include life skills education in schools and also use social media influencers and podcasts to deter children from experimenting with these new age gateway products.

Children need guidance on how to manage curiosity and resist experimentation with these products. There is also a need to encourage educators and parents to openly discuss their vulnerabilities and personal experiences, making them more relatable to children.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which is Britain’s drug cost-effectiveness watchdog has recommended the use of Wegovy in adults with atleast one weight-related condition and a body mass index of 35 but only within the National Health Service’s (NHS) specialist weight management scheme. The company is closely monitoring the demand for the weight loss drug and is working with regulators and providers to ensure that people living with obesity can have access to and remain on treatment. It is speculated that due to the high demand of the drug as of now, it will take quite some years before the company can satisfy the whole market.

The drug will be available both within the National Health Service’s weight management scheme and privately through a registered healthcare professional.  The British Government plans to launch a pilot programme to explore how new weekly weight loss shots like Wegovy can be given to obese patients by general practitioners. In the US this drug sells for as much as $1350 a month but its cost in UK has not been revealed so far.

Earlier studies had also published that women who experienced trauma in their childhood had greater likelihood of risky behaviours in adulthood like physical inactivity, poor diet and substance abuse which may influence the risk of pregnancy complications and outcomes. Most of the studies which were included in the research were from high income western nations so may not be generalizable elsewhere. Also the study could not assess the potential impact of different types of childhood trauma. But the definite conclusion of the research was that it emphasized the importance of preventing negative events in childhood to reduce immediate impacts and also intergenerational transmission.
