I welcome all my readers to this beautiful journey- A journey not merely from “FAT TO FIT” but towards “HEALTH, HOPE AND HAPPINESS”!!! Not so long ago, the word “fitness” was limited to only a particular group of people like celebrities, athletes, swimmers, dancers etc. But in today’s contemporary world, it is really astonishing to see that every common man talks about fitness and is determined to be fit. So what does fitness actually mean???

“Fitness” is a broad term. It means something different to each person. It is infact a very personal term. In general, fitness is the ability to live a full and balanced life. It breeds self-reliance and keeps man mentally alert. Physical fitness is also essential for human beings to adjust well with their environment as their mind and body are in complete harmony.

In 1967, H.Harrison Clarke, who has significantly contributed in the field of physical education and is the author of multiple books on physical education defined fitness as “ The ability to carry out daily tasks (work and play) with vigour and alertness without undue fatigue and with ample energy to enjoy leisure time pursuits and to meet unforeseen emergencies”.

But in today’s fast-paced world where everything is INSTANT-from instant food (whether healthy or not), instant news (fake or otherwise), instant google answers (many a times creating confusion) to instant money transfer (though filled with security issues), everyone has forgotten that the beauty of life lies in focusing on “Being in the Present”.

According to my observations, there are two groups of population. One group of the population, especially the youngsters, expect instant fitness failing to understand the fact that it could turn out to be dangerous. They forget the fact that “PATIENCE IS THE KEY”. The saddest part is that with the beginning of new year and with a list of resolutions in mind, the overzealous, instant gratification selves of this group of people emerge and they do too much exercise in order to make up for the lost time. They can be called the “FITNESS FREAKS” and they develop an unhealthy obsession with staying healthy.

“It’s going to be a journey, it’s not a sprint to get in shape” -Kerri Walsh Jennings

The other group of population are those who do not want to start any type of physical exercise, at any point of time and they just keep postponing. They are known as the “SEDENTARY” population and are defined as those expanding less than 10% of their daily energy in the performance of moderate to high intensity activities. This attitude is harmful for the generation. In today’s rush, they fail to realize that health is a precious asset until it has been depleted. The start is what stops most people especially in matters related to fitness.

Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. -Arthur Asle

Now, I leave it to the readers to decide about which group of population they belong to. There is also one last group of population about which I have not mentioned. These are the people who have already started with the fitness activities but are still left with lot’s of confusion in their minds and infact are strong believers of some common ‘myths’ as ‘facts’ associated with fitness. The purpose of my article is basically to throw some light over these myths, misconceptions and misbeliefs and to highlight some DO’S AND DON’TS about fitness in a simple, comprehensible and lucid way.

Irrespective of the type of person you are, here goes the list of some DO’S AND DON’TS about fitness for all.

DO’S

1. Always get a physical examination and consult experts: Everybody is different and every person reacts to muscle strain in a different way. So kindly consult your physician for a general health check up before you engage yourself in any kind of new exercise or fitness workouts. Never hesitate to take advice from experts (physical therapist or personal trainer). Make sure you do the exercise safely and effectively.

2. Be determined and set your goal: The best investment you can ever make is in your health. When you feel like quitting, always think about the reason for your initiation.

3. Do it for yourself: Fitness is not about being better than someone else, it is all about being better than you used to be. Being the best version of oneself.

4. Set aside time for exercise: Put all your excuses aside and make time for exercise. One hour of workout is just 4% of your whole day. Cut the time you use for browsing through WhatsApp and social media pages or the time you use for playing some online games to make time for exercise.

5. Make it a habit: Research shows that frequent, early repetitions of certain behaviours, such as exercise, make it more likely to become something you do automatically. Once you see the results, it becomes an addiction. Fitness is more about mental than a physical challenge.

6. Take rest at regular intervals: According to the performance and well-being coach George Anderson- “For most of the people especially beginners, periods of recovery between sets or intervals allows for higher intensity, better quality movement, lower risk of injury and a greater training stimulus that is likely to lead to superior results”. Remember that “Soreness is never a sign of good workout”. Less rest never means that you are working hard. Pain always signals that something is not working properly. Overexertion signs are fatigue, muscle soreness, dehydration, exhaustion.Overexertion can cause injuries like muscle sprains, strains and tears, tendinitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Joint dislocations, herniated discs, stress fractures etc.

7. Always keep yourself hydrated: There is always the risk of dehydration especially while working out in hot, humid weather and during rigorous prolonged workouts due to excessive sweating. Severe dehydration could be dangerous as it can create electrolyte imbalances and strain the muscles.

8. Record your improvements: Always keep a track of your improvements whether physical or mental as they give a sense of pride in your accomplishments and motivate you to continue in your path towards fitness without any hindrance.

DON’TS

1. Do not get obsessed with fitness: There lies a darker reality behind the fitness fanatics. Especially with the ongoing COVID pandemic, we are exercising now more than ever. But everything in moderation is best. Everything that exceeds the bounds of moderation has an unstable foundation. These days the “fitness trackers” and devices of various brands like Apple, Samsung, Fitbit, Huawei are used ubiquitously and they have occupied almost everyone’s wrists. According to a recent report by Glasgow-based general practitioner Dr. Des Spence, all health-tracking devices were contributing to an ‘unhealthy health-obsessed generation’ (also published in British Medical Jour

2. Never start off too hard: It is always better to take small steps. A journey of a thousand miles always begins with a single step. Don’t be overwhelmed and do not binge on exercise. Slow down and start again after you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Moderate exercise has shown to improve the immune system while excessive exercise could suppress it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), increased workouts don’t assure health benefits. Experts say that extreme exercises may also lead to heart damage and heart rhythm disorders. One study found that repeated extreme exercises can remodel the heart, thickening the heart walls and scarring tissue. You don’t have to be extreme, just be consistent

3. Don’t just focus on weight loss: It’s quite common for the beginners to check their weight on the weighing scale after every workout and keep a track of even a gram increase or decrease in weight. Don’t make weight loss your sole marker of success. You will lose weight slowly. Target on fat loss rather than on weight loss because as you become fitter, you will gain muscle and become more toned –muscle weighs more than fat. So the process is definitely a slow one.

4. Do not starve/ Don’t binge: Make sure to give your body the right nutritious food to fuel your workouts. Women are at risk for what is known as the “female athlete triad” that includes: loss of menstruation, osteoporosis and eating disorders. These symptoms arise from a combination of overexercise and calorie restriction. Also there is an eating disorder known as “Orthorexia nervosa” that involves an unhealthy obsession with eating foods that one considers as healthy.

Lastly, I would also like to add that Fitness has no age limits. It is not limited to workout routines, equipment or machinery. You could choose your own way to be fit. Even simple house cleaning or dancing or short walking can be preferred for staying fir. Fitness can be found at your fist. Yes, clenching a smiley ball in your fist is also a way of exercising. It’s never too early or too late to work towards being the healthiest and best version of you.

I would conclude with these beautiful lines: “Train like an athlete, eat like a nutritionist, sleep like a baby, win like a champion”.

So let’s all begin our journey towards HEALTH, HOPE AND HAPPINESS………….

The addiction
Cause and Consequences

Children are not fully-grown yet, and they are just little adults, their growing minds and bodies make them uniquely vulnerable to the effects of the environment around them, including all types of radiations generated by mobile phones, iPads, tablets, smartphones and all other kinds of wireless devices. In the new era, the children are exposed to technology at younger ages than ever before. There are different types of radiations generated by mobile phones and wireless devices, microwave radiations, ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Ionizing radiations such as x-rays, radon, ultraviolet rays of sunlight all are high frequency, and high energy. Non-ionizing radiations are low in frequency and energy. Cell phones have non-ionizing radiations. Mobile phones send radio-frequency waves from its transmitting unit or antenna to nearby cell towers. When we make or receive a call, send or receive text, or use data, our phone receives radio-frequency waves to its antenna from cell towers.

Microwave radiations from the cell phones and other wireless devices are very harmful, particularly for children and unborn babies. Many researches have proved that, such radiations pose a greater risk for bodily damage in children and unborn babies. The rate of microwave radiations absorption is higher in children than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner, and their relative size is smaller. Fetuses are particularly more vulnerable, because microwave radiations exposure can lead to degeneration of the protective sheath that surrounds the brain neurons.

According to a recent research, the brain tissues of children absorb about two times more microwave radiations than that of adults, and other studies have reported that the bone marrow of children absorbs ten times more microwave radiations than that of adults. Belgium, France, Germany, and other technologically sophisticated governments are passing laws or issuing warnings about children’s use of wireless devices. They also legislated that smartphone makers specify the least distance from the body that their products must be kept so that legal limits for exposure to microwave radiations aren’t exceeded. For iPads, laptop computers and tablets, the minimum distance from the device to body is 20 cm (about 8 inches).

There are many potential health risks to mental and physical well-being related to overuse of cell phones, especially low IQ & improper mental growth in children, sleep deprivation, brain tumors and psychiatric diseases are hot-button issues. Till date, studies related to radiations generated by mobile phones have been inconsistent and results have been conflicting. These wireless devices are now part of our everyday life, but they can be used in a manner that is safe enough, the most important point is the distance, holding a cell phone few inches away from our ear provides a thousand times reduction in risk. Unless a cell phone is turned off, it is always radiating, so when not in use, it should not be kept on the body. The best place to keep a cell phone is somewhere like a pouch, purse, bag, or backpack. These devices should be kept away from a pregnant woman’s abdomen, and a mother should not use a cell phone while breastfeeding and nursing, and baby monitors should not be placed in an infant’s crib. Children and teenagers need to know how to use mobile phones and wireless devices safely. Cell phones should not be permitted in children’s bedroom at all.

Can cell phones cause cancer?

In fact, there are solid grounds to believe it really is so. The cause for that is radio-frequency of electromagnetic fields given off by wireless and mobile devices. They have an adverse effect on our body, especially on growing skulls of kids, toddlers and teenagers, which can trigger the development of brain cancer in the future. According to a recent research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, excessive use of mobile phones may lead to the formation of brain tumors as glioma and acoustic neuroma. First and foremost, this is an issue for those adults and children who are virtually glued to their cell phones.

Pew research center has reported, that 75% of preteens and early teens keep all day their cell phones in their front pant pockets, which is way harmful for their reproductive health. Boys should not keep their cell phone in their front pants pockets. There is a potential harm to sperms, and girls should not place their cell phone in their inner wears. This recommendation was based on a case study of four young women with a history of keeping their cell phones in or near their inner wears, and who subsequently developed breast cancer. It’s obvious that more radiations are absorbed with more hours of use, so children should be taught to use their mobile phones as little as possible. Landlines, Skype, and computer phone services, when connected to the internet with a cable, don’t give off radiations, therefore the parents should encourage their kids to use those. Moreover, the Wi-Fi routers in the home should be placed away from where people, particularly children, spend most of their time.

Good health is above wealth, but majority of us undermine our personal health, and become more careless about our children’s mental and physical state day-by-day, caused by the excessive usage of cell phones. A recent survey found that 92% of world population has mobile phones today. Among which 31% admit that they never turn off their mobile phones. More than 90% of parents provide their kids cell phones, so they can easily keep in touch whenever they want to. All of this gives sufficient ground to talk about a cell phone addiction, specially about the possible dangers of cell phones on children’s health.

Why cell phones should be a complete ‘No’ to kids?
Checkpoints

Cell phone overuse has many severely bad side effects on children’s health primarily and adult’s health generally. We strive to be constantly connected and available. This makes us feel tired, nervous, and absent-minded. We hardly realize that a cause for our tiredness and fatigue is hidden in our pocket. It’s high time to determine more about the negative influences of mobile phones and other wireless technologies.

From time to time, many children and a few adults have a false feeling that their cell phone is vibrating in their pockets when it’s not. This situation is called a phantom pocket vibration syndrome. A study conducted by Dr. Michelle Drouin revealed that 89% of teenagers had experienced this type of sensation. This especially relates to the teenagers and undergraduates having a social media addiction. They are more anxious and nervous. Missing a text message from other side feels like a real tragedy to them. Reducing overall usage of mobile phones, and shutting off cell phone’s vibration is a good way to combat and to deal with this syndrome.

When texting someone or reading an article on the Internet, we all have to stare at a small-sized screen of our cell phone. This can put a lot of strain on kids’ eyes; they can dry out and hurt when blinking. Eventually, this may result in visual deterioration. To maintain clear sight, one needs to keep the device at least 12 to 16 inches away from the face.

While talking about cell phones and health, we cannot ignore their influence on the sleeping habits. Most of us including children even, get used to set the alarm and put a cell phone somewhere not far from the head or even under their pillow. In fact, it’s a very bad idea. As already mentioned, microwave radiations transmitted by a cell phone are harmful to a brain specially kid’s brains. Having a mobile device at hand can also end up with insomnia in children. They’ll feel tempted to check it at night. They won’t be able to sleep properly because of its vibrations and beeps. This can cause sleep deprivation, which can lead to serious mental health problems in children less than 19 years of age.

A healthy spine is one of the key factors of well-being during growing age. When our kids are slouching over a cell phone for most hours daily, they ruin their neck and back muscles. So, no wonder they feel the nagging pain in these parts. But wait, there’s more. Pain, strain and aching neck muscles can cause a severe headache to make things worse. So eventually, they’ll feel like a wreck. To keep our children healthy, it’s time to decide, that we should not allow our kids to overuse cell phones and other wireless devices.

Dr. Vijay Agarwal started the discussion with emphasizing the need to know why one is innovating before innovating something. He said one should ask oneself that why is he/her innovating. He was concerned with the WHO rankings, where India is at 112 and countries like Bangladesh, Cuba are ahead of our country in providing healthcare, which is an alarming situation and time to think where are we lagging in. He stressed on scaling up innovations in India. As the need for providing the root level population with healthcare delivery is more important than innovating new things and suggested ways to contribute to achieving it.

Chris Lloyd presented his keynote by firstly Encouraging the platform of InnoHEALTH where all kinds of people from various fields of expertise, influential and innovative people are present. Stressed on a significant problem of diabetics. In their country, they spend 2/5th of the budget on people above 65. Need to bridge the gap between resources and patient needs. Looked into Singapore master plan in healthcare as the target model as it’s the second most rapidly aging country. It takes a Rubik’s cube approach to change the care dynamic. Compared and showcased opportunities in conventional medicine vs telemedicine.

Young Indian Innovators all set to compete with best brains from 78 countries

Obesity is on the rise globally, emerging as a major public health challenge. While sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diets are major causes, there are several other contributory factors which are largely ignored.

Obesogens are a class of what are called endocrine disruptors. These chemicals inappropriately alter lipid homeostasis, change metabolic set points as well as regulation of appetite and satiety to promote fat accumulation. They are found abundantly in the environment including plastic bottles, metal food cans, and detergents and are, therefore, difficult to avoid.

Tanya Goyal and S.M.C. Ganesh from Maharaja Agrasen Public School in Delhi has found that freshwater algae named Chlorella Pituita could be a solution. “We have conducted four experiments including triglyceride assay to check fat storage and expression of genes associated with adipogenesis and fat accumulation. The results showed that the algae helped in the regulation of genes against activation induced by obesogens,” the children said while speaking to India Science Wire.

The two went to America and made a presentation at the Global Meet for Young Innovators organized by Intel at Pittsburg from May 13-18. As many as 1800 young innovators from 78 countries were competing for about USD 34 million in awards.

Antara Raaghavi Bhattacharya of C.D. Somani Memorial School, Mumbai, has been trying to analyze data from NASA’s exoplanet archive and Exoplanet Orbit Database. “In the last few years, many exoplanetary systems have been discovered, especially by NASA’s Kepler mission. Much recent work has focused on finding other Earth-like planets within potentially habitable zones around stars. However, a lot of exoplanetary data has still not been fully analyzed. I am looking at those data”.

In all, 25 school children from India participated in the competition. The other projects presented included a diagnostic tool to identify spatial abilities in scholastically classified slow learners, a new approach to help curb malignancy of tumor cells, a portable real-time data acquisition device for lake water quality monitoring and mapping and a project for non-invasive detection of asymptomatic heart attacks using bio-electric. One of the selected projects was designed by Antara Raaghavi Bhattacharya – for the better understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems.

The programme is part of a partnership between the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and Intel, known as the Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS). It is conducted annually for school students from class 8 to 12. They compete in 17 subject categories.

Flagging off the 25 strong young innovators team at a function, DST Secretary Ashutosh Sharma expressed confidence that students would bring a lot of laurels to the country. So far, 115 Indian students have won 132 awards, competing against more than six million children of their age group from different parts of the world.

Introduction

In the 21st century, we are all connected. Population growth, mass urbanization, deforestation, climate change and increased travel have dramatically increased the risk that familiar diseases will spread and mutate, and new ones will emerge. As people enter new spheres of biodiversity, they come in closer contact with other species, increasing the risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans, and then spreading more widely.

It all sounds scaring, but it is stark reality facts on the ground which are almost ready for such a grim situation if corrective measures are not affecting in time.

She is not a wizard in crystal grazing to forecast future events, but certainly, she is a visionary and envisions that the spectre of diseases will loom over the planet earth in future. She is no one else but Janet Tobia who has won laurels for her documentary ”Unseen Enemy”.

The Emmy award-winning filmmaker Janet Tobia told InnoHEALTH Magazine that her movie Unseen Enemy examines why in the 21st century we are experiencing a rash of diseases that were once only outbreaks but have now become full-blown epidemics.

This year, the world recalls nightmarish memories of 1918 pandemic of influenza and screen through a popular movie “Unknown Enemy” on its first anniversary. “I had a little bird, its name was Enza, I opened the window, and in–flu-enza, was a popular rhyme for children while skipping ropes in those outrageous days.

Informatively, the 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic. Researchers say it infected 500 million people around the world, including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic, and resulted in the death of 50 to 100 million (three to five percent of the world’s population).

Disease had a greatly limited life expectancy in the early 20th century. Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast, the 1918 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. There are several possible explanations for the high mortality rate of the 1918 influenza pandemic. Some research suggests that the specific variant of the virus had an unusually aggressive nature. One group of researchers recovered the virus from the bodies of frozen victims and found that the transinfection in animals caused a rapid progressive respiratory failure and death through a cytokine storm (overreaction of body’s immune system).

More recent investigations, mainly based on original medical reports from the period of the pandemic, found that the viral infection itself was not more aggressive than any previous influenza. But that the special circumstances (malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, poor hygiene, etc.) promoted bacterial superinfection that killed most of the victims typically after a somewhat prolonged deathbed.

To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in France, Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. Examining the recent epidemics of Ebola, Influenza and Zika; unseen enemy makes it clear that epidemics bring out the best and worst of human behaviour, and that their effect goes far beyond the terrible tolls of sickness and death.

‘‘We are all connected to any person, animal, and insect that may have an infectious disease incubating in them. And that connection is either incredibly dangerous or a powerful force for good. It is our choice which of those becomes true.’’

She says political leaders all over the world should address the problem. And play a key role in combating pandemics threats. There must be early detection and warning systems in place to detect outbreaks faster. Countries must work in close rapport both in the field of vaccines and drugs distribution, availability of diagnostic tools and research work in the discipline. Leaders will have to chip in together. Make strong health architecture at a global level – as a threat is looming on everyone.

We also need to use new mobile technology to reach out to affected and vulnerable populations, mobilize healthcare and make long-term investments in scientific research.

Finally, it is critical to invest in flu research both to improve the effectiveness of the current vaccine. And, more importantly, to develop a universal flu vaccine – one that would work against all types of flu, including potentially a new pandemic strain.

She recalls that the 1918 influenza pandemic killed more than 50 million people around the world. In India alone, 17 million lost their lives and so her movie cameras rivet around a potential global scenario. Emerging epidemics have a propensity to burst anywhere and anytime because of the fast changing global environment.

She visualizes a scenario where India can play a major role because of its expertise in carrying out past massive health care programmes. Smallpox eradication and polio vaccination programme vindicate the fact about country’s efficacy to turntables. It is the need of the hour that such an expert was implemented for the elimination of infectious diseases to stave off the threat of the outbreak of pandemics in the global village.

In addition to urbanization and living in a highly connected world, deforestation is leading to closer contact with animals, which may infect us with deadly viruses. With climate change, vectors like mosquitoes are moving up north into newer regions. Suppose, antimicrobial resistance is added to this mix, and then there will be a new virus and drug-resistant infections. If we don’t have antibiotics that work, then you would be infected and untreatable.

The Director of the film minces no words to articulate her views on the unseen enemy. Ebola, for example, may have emerged in West Africa, a new part of Africa, because of deforestation there. AIDS moved out of the forests of Africa to spread around the world. Today there are over 20 million people living with HIV-AIDS. In addition to the new virus, we now also have new drug-resistant strains of once badly feared tuberculosis and malaria developing.

She says reports are in circulation that new strains of influenza are infecting birds in China. But the day might not be far away. When these microbes may learn the clandestine art of migrating from birds to human beings.

In populous countries, people live in dense pockets in the overburdened urban swathes. Not only that they travel in crowded public transports and if an infected, suffering from a contagious infection, sneezes or coughs, there is an instant spreading of the infection. The virus, the unseen enemy, infects people who are generally oblivious of the lurking threat.

During the outbreak of such epidemics, people are advising to be cautious to mount their own defence to protect themselves. In India, a sea of humanity moves every day from one place to another. And in case of the outbreak of such diseases, travelling of infection can be very fast.

In case of India, there is a heavy burden of noncommunicable diseases and chronic diseases that often compromise immunity. Deaths from flu are higher in diabetics than the general population.

The seasonal flu shot is the best tool. There is some evidence to show that taking the flu shot two years in a row gives you more protection than if you skipped a year. There is also some evidence on how people receiving a flu shot for the first time. And have the strongest immune protection reaction, while other studies say this isn’t true.

India’s smallpox eradication campaign is the most successful healthcare drive in history. During the time more than 100,000 health workers visited over 100 million households to eradicate smallpox. So, India has a blueprint to deal with a future pandemic.

Filmmakers had looked at previous epidemics and infections. AIDS was lurking in their minds. But the sudden spurt of Ebola and Zika virus’ cases turned the film into a real-time saga. And both AIDS and SARS slipped into the background.

In the global village narrative, every citizen is open to risk factors in case of pandemics. The diseases assail everything whatever comes into their way – may it be health or wealth. When a pandemic happens, people don’t work, economies collapse, and the even social fabric is dismembered. People attempt to avoid their own infected close relatives and friends. Out of fear that they will be the next seizure if precautions were not clamped.

In case of pandemics, whatever happens on the front line in Liberia affects people in Europe and North America. We all share knowledge platforms, travel frequently and export and import cheaper goods so microbes also travel freely. For her, Ebola is the test case. According to the Director, Ebola was not handled swiftly at the stage of the outbreak. Otherwise, it could have been bridled at that stage rather it turned into the epidemic.

She recalls that Zika virus too had sprung a surprise. It was never visualized. No one thought that a virus first identified in the 1940s in Uganda would travel halfway across the world. First to the South Pacific and then to South America, and now to North America. We are still trying to understand, why this virus that particularly dangerous would in Brazil produce such terrible birth defects.

Zika is essentially a pandemic as it affects so many countries and continents. It could affect more because the mosquitoes will be able to move further north as the globe warms up.
