										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>IIT Kharagpur deveops diagnostic tools for interstitial <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comtrends/faster-diagnostic-tests-developed-tb/">lung diseases</a> and lung cancer</strong><br />
Researchers at the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communications, IIT Kharagpur have recently developed a decision support system to diagnose cancerous tumors and other diseased tissues in human lungs. While one system can refer to CT scan images to detect lung nodules and test them for the possibility of malignancy, the second software can detect interstitial lung disease patterns in chest HRCT images. The team has successfully tested both software systems at AIIMS, New Delhi with a success rate higher than 80%.<br />
The advantages of these newly developed systems include their use of non-invasive and comparatively affordable methods of image analysis that would aid the <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comtrends/innovative-imaging-solutions-by-philips/">radiologists</a> to identify malignancies by reading growth in the lung nodules. The system can also identify interstitial disease patterns in HRCT images showing the lung tissue texture. Another added benefit is that the reference point is India centric, i.e. the medical images can database used for reference is taken from the Indian patient population. Data has been taken from PGIMER Chandigarh; mainly biopsy cases and foreign database such as LIDC-IDRI and MedGIFTILD have been used.<br />
The malignancy detecting tool detects a lung nodule, segment the nodule and provides a way to modify segmentation, retrieve similar nodules from the database with their report assess the chances of malignancy of the nodule in question based on the retrieval results. The ILD tool is developed by incorporating feedback from expert radiologists to make it easy to use for non-techsavvy clinicians. The software has important modules like automatic segmentation of lung boundary, retrieval of similar segments from the database with their report and assess the probability of the pathological segment to be a particular ILD category based on the data retrieved. The mapping of disease is performed by doctors based on the ILD pattern and clinical inputs.<br />
At present, the lung nodule detection rate and classification rate is 86% and 87%, respectively.The success rate for ILD classification is 84%. The researchers are working to further improve to conduct clinical trials on bigger sample sizes. The report has been published in more than13 International Journals and19 International Conferences in various stages of its development.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Age and disease demographics are changing rapidly across the globe. The number of people above 65 years is expected to double and constitute nearly 17% of the world population by 2050. The chronic disease incidence rate is expected to rise to 57% by 2020. These figures highlight the need to enhance the quality and efficiency of care with quick response time to health-related emergencies.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Ideas that cut across medicine, biological and engineering sciences, material design, and system innovations are converging to address these challenges. The shift is going to be from legacy products like pacemaker and imaging systems to wearables for general fitness tracking and gait monitoring. Taking a step further, researchers are now developing and testing more focused miniaturized bioelectronic devices for recording and analyzing <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.cominnovatiocuris/disha-act-for-healthcare-industry/">health data</a> for detecting determinants of health and for medical interventions.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In diagnostics, non-invasive bioelectronic skin sensors that measure analytes in biofluids like saliva, tears, and sweat are showing promising results in assessing stress levels and detecting conditions like diabetes and cystic fibrosis. Researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have developed a biosensor for detecting glucose in saliva samples for <a href="https://innohealthmagazine.comtrends/needle-free-diabetes-care/">diabetes detection</a>. The results can directly be viewed on the user’s smartphone. Many such studies are now underway in India.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Conductive gels and patch sensors resembling fashion accessories are also being developed to record cardiac, brain and muscle activity which could complement the traditional blood analysis and clinical examinations. Mechano-acoustic skin sensors that measure speech patterns and internal body sounds, like swallowing, are being explored to quantitatively measure the impact of rehabilitation in patients, such as those recovering from a stroke.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In treatment, miniscule implants placed inside the body can cross the blood-brain barrier and deliver the drug directly at the target site, even in hard-to-reach internal organs. Such devices have shown promising results in laboratory settings in reducing side effects and toxicity while increasing overall drug efficacy. This could also ensure patient compliance, a step further to the recently approved digital pill, especially in patients on long care and those with compromised cognition.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Certain implants can also electrically stimulate cardiac or brain tissues to treat conditions like irregular heartbeat, certain motor disorders, and cognitive impairments. Other implants like artificial retina and cochlear implants, restore functionalities of damaged tissues. These interventions, being referred to as ‘Bioceuticals’, could restructure conventional therapeutic options for more efficient outcomes.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In India, a lot of work has now started in this sphere. Results from a few studies have started trickling in, with most of them in development or early stages of testing. Research findings in the journal Scientific Reports by researchers from IIT Kharagpur earlier this year reported bio impedimetric analysis of cancer cells that efficiently distinguishes their aggressiveness by measuring electric field impedance in laboratory conditions. In another study published in the journal Sensors earlier this year, researchers at IIT Delhi developed a novel low-cost prosthesis based on sensors to enable normal gait kinematics, i.e. motion analysis, for lower limb amputees.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">IIT Kharagpur is setting up a Bioelectronics Innovation Laboratory that aims to develop battery-free implantable miniaturized engineering systems for treatment of brain, nerve, muscle or spinal cord disorders by restoring missing neural functions. The proposed coin-sized implant will be powered wirelessly and will combine brain activity testing like electrical simulation, bio-potential recording and neuro-chemical sensing for use in rehabilitation and prosthesis.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Round-the-clock data collected from bioelectronic devices could replace the present time-point investigations and lead to better management of the health condition of patients. In addition, data from multiple people can help develop artificial intelligence algorithms and predictive tools. Such tools have already started showing analytic performance similar, and sometimes better than manual inspection by a specialist physician. In countries like India, that suffer from a shortage of qualified doctors in remote areas, such devices have immense potential. However, data standardization, data security, and privacy protection must be addressed and regulated before rolling out such interventions.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In the next few years, health monitoring, neural prosthetics, and biochemical prosthetics are expected to drive major developments in this space. Although the monitoring devices have already started testing the market in niche patient segments, it may take the implants another 5-10 years to reach health centers as they make their way through developmental and regulatory checkpoints.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important;"><a href="https://imagen.ai/">Imagen</a>’s product ‘OsteoDetect’, an Artificial Intelligence-based diagnostic tool that can quickly detect distal radius wrist fractures is one of the latest products to get US FDA marketing clearance. Its machine learning algorithm studies 2 dimensional x-rays or radiographs for signs of fracture by analysing the posterior-anterior and medial-lateral x-ray images of adult wrists. Studies conducted on comparing fracture detection aided by OsteoDetect and certified orthopaedic surgeons showed that the readers&#8217; ability to detect wrist fractures was improved by using the software as evident by greater sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values, compared with unaided standard clinical practice.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Arnav Kapoor, an Indian-origin researcher at MIT, has developed a device named ALTEREGO that lets others hear words you are thinking without your making a sound. The product looks like a curved bone hooked to one ear that touches the jaw on the chin and under the lower lip which works by using ‘subvocalisations’ which are the tiny, imperceptible movements in the jaw each time you say a word in your mind. There are four sensors which pick up the signals and transmit them to a computer that has been trained to recognize and convert them back to words which are conveyed to the listener’s mind through bone conduction in the listener’s jawbone, instead of words being openly spoken and conveyed. With the use of Alterego’s technology, one could ask questions soundlessly and get a voice reply only in your ears. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A study undertaken by Dr. Satish Dubey at IIT Delhi has revealed a new portable diagnostic device which is developed by Inito, Bengaluru-based company that can do a dozen tests with the comfort of a person being at home. It has the advantage of reading dozens of diagnostic test strips with a 99.12% correlation when compared to lab grade scanners irrespective of the mobile phone used. This makes it a very reliable tool for portable diagnostics. The device uses patent-pending imaging technology called flat lens that allows a single portable device paired with a smartphone to conduct dozens of diagnostic tests with the same device. The first test that the company has launched is a fertility monitor targeted at couples trying to have a baby. Soon tests for Thyroid, Diabetes and Vitamin D will be added to the device. To add more tests to the device, you just need to update the App and order the strips for the user. Advantages of the device are that it is easy to use, portable, small size, affordable and also third-party strips can be added to the Inito platform by just an App upgrade. The device has won CII Design Award, India Design Mark and Japanese Good Design Award. The device is priced at INR 3195 and is available on Inito’s official website and Amazon. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">An innovation by an Indian research scholar, Ramya Veerubhotla at IIT Kharagpur, is the development of a disposable and flexible battery made from paper that could generate power from the bacteria present in sewage water. The battery is made using air cathode and the anode can be made from any carbon-based material. The product is unique because it is very light in weight and the power generation starts within ten seconds, unlike other usual microbial fuel cells which take a couple of days to start power production as the bacteria need time to adjust to the environment. The capacity of power generated from one cell is in the range of a few microwatts. For more power production, one can stack and fold these cells together giving it a compact shape. The start-up has recently raised a $14 million Series A led by Founders Fund. The device has two parts, first is a scale that has sensors and a computer and second being a weight scale that spins a person around so that the stationary mirror can grab the body scan of the user in about 15 seconds. Naked uses infrared light to capture your 3D body model which then gets visualised on the Naked App and alerts the user when there is progress being made by the user in terms of their fitness and also where there is potential for more work to be done. The device has an Intel x86 processor, RAM, 4GB DDR4 RAM and a 64GB SSD which makes it easy to beam the image directly from the device to the user’s phone. The depth data of the users’ body is not uploaded to the cloud instead is being handled on the device itself and also the resultant image is more of a TSA body scan image rather than a 3D avatar. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A group of researchers under the mentorship of Scientist Alberto Salleo at Stanford University has created a stretchy patch which when applied directly to the skin, takes up sweat and assesses the amount of cortisol the person is producing. This stretchy, rectangular sensor around a membrane/specifically binds only to cortisol but also detects charged ions like sodium or potassium present in our sweat. This patch has a waterproof layer that protects it from contamination. So far, a wearable prototype version has been made but if this is converted into reality it would be very easy to monitor salt imbalances in our bodies and reveal the emotional state of people who are under immense stress and do not open about their situation. The present methods for measuring cortisol levels requires several days of waiting for the lab results. This device seems to solve the waiting problem for the results and is user-friendly. All the user needs to do is to sweat enough to glisten the patch and connect it to a device for analysis which gives results in seconds. The researchers are still working on its reusability though the prototype seems to work multiple times so long as it is not saturated with sweat. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Iris is the part of the eye that is colored around the pupil and controls the amount of light entering the eye. It is found to be damaged in conditions like Aniridia in which people are born with a partial or missing iris or it could happen later in life due to traumatic injury or surgical removal due to melanoma. With patients of eye damage, the surgically implanted device known as the CustomFlex Artificial Iris is a boon. Recently this prosthetic iris has got the US FDA approval. The CustomFlex Iris is surgically inserted and held in place either by sutures or eye’s anatomical structures. This iris is made of thin, foldable medical grade silicon and is custom-fitted and colored for each patient. A study of nearly 400 adults and children with Aniridia or other iris defects found that the device was safe and effective, with 70% of participants reporting significant decreases in light sensitivity and glare, as well as improvement in health-related quality of life. The study also found low rates of adverse side effects. As per FDA, the artificial iris is contradicted in patients who have uncontrolled or severe chronic inflammation, abnormally small size of eyes, untreated chronic glaucoma, cataract caused by the rubella virus, abnormal blood vessels on the iris, inner eye infections and certain kind of damaged blood vessels in the retina. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Sonskusale has recently developed a first of its kind ‘sense-then-respond’ smart bandage which uses sensors to detect subtle biomarkers that signal wound healing. The device has a microprocessor to read the data captured by the sensors, communicate with the mobile and also can direct the bandage to release medication if it is needed. It takes into account things like sensing whether the wound is getting enough oxygen, right pH level is there, what is the temperature near the wound and is there any inflammation? All this information is communicated to a central processor where the doctor already has programmed drug release for antibiotic or growth factor to improve healing. Such a bandage has applications in bed sores, burns and surgical wounds with the advantage of reducing complications from infections and reducing the number of amputations. 	<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Department of Science &amp; Technology, Government of India, has recently sanctioned a grant of INR 14.43 crore to IIT Kanpur in response to a proposal by the institute to set up the Interdisciplinary Center for Cyber Security and Cyber Defence of Critical Infrastructures. A period of Five years has sanctioned for the grant.  It covers expenditures for the setting up of the centre such as infrastructure, equipment etc. Cyber Security has become a pressing need the world over, with major cyber‐attacks coming to light every few months.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A large number of countries is working on strengthening their cybersecurity technology. They are working to protect their national security as infrastructure disabling cyber-attacks is a threat to national security. In India though, the work in this field is still in its nascent stages.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">A consolidated effort from the cybersecurity expertise present in the country is the need of the hour and the new centre coming up at IIT‐K plans to work specifically towards this. To achieve this goal, the Interdisciplinary Center for Cyber Security and Cyber Defence of Critical Infrastructures would work closely with researchers from <a href="http://www.iitb.ac.in/">IIT Bombay</a>, <a href="http://www.iitkgp.ac.in/">IIT Kharagpur</a>, ISI Kolkata, <a href="http://www.iitd.ac.in/">IIT Delhi</a> and <a href="http://www.mnit.ac.in/">MNIT Jaipur</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">“ Working with various industry and government bodies we are convinced that cybersecurity research, training, and manpower development are national imperatives. We are very pleased that <a href="http://www.dst.gov.in/">DST</a> has decided to fund our centre and help us build the capabilities to carry out cutting-edge research and training in the field of cybersecurity, in particular with the goal to protect our critical infrastructures. We look forward to the journey in the next five years to the development of world-class capabilities here at IIT Kanpur,” said Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Principal Investigator for the upcoming centre.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">The Cyber Security and Defence Center at IITK plans not only to engage faculty in cutting-edge research in the domain of cybersecurity of critical industrial systems (water treatment plants, nuclear power plants, power distribution infrastructure). But also to engage in training through courses with an emphasis on cybersecurity. They also plan to have summer courses and internships for students from other institutes. As well as custom training courses for government and industry executives.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">Consulting to the government and the critical infrastructure sector by the faculty and researchers at the Center. They will also be one of the focus areas. One of the major components of the centre will be an Industrial Systems Cyber Security Test Bed – a first of its kind in India – similar to the test beds at the <a href="https://www.inl.gov/">Idaho National Labs</a>, <a href="http://www.sandia.gov/">Sandia National Labs</a>, and <a href="https://www.nist.gov/">National Institute of Standards and Technology</a> in the U.S.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">It will take about a year to build this facility where research on cyber vulnerabilities of critical industrial systems will be carried out along with the development of technology to protect them.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">“We recognized the need for developing a research and education program in cybersecurity. Especially in the sector of critical infrastructures. Such as power grid, manufacturing automation, electricity generation facilities, building automation, railway signalling etc. And went to DST with a compelling proposal to establish a national testbed for experimenting with cybersecurity of such systems. And carry out research to develop defence techniques. Through many rounds of presentations, and revisions we were able to convince multiple panels of experts and external reviewers that we have the interdisciplinary expertise at IIT Kanpur. Our centre has experts in cybersecurity, cryptography, machine learning, formal methods, program analysis, electrical engineering, networking and computer systems. A convergence of which is essential to building cybersecurity of critical infrastructure. We are very confident that we can build a world-class facility and research/education/training program,” said Prof. Sandeep Shukla, Co‐Principal Investigator for the centre.</p>

They recently signed a MoU with New York University Tandon School of Engineering. IIT Kanpur also hosted the Cyber Security Awareness Week in November 2016 with them. They also signed a MoU with the Interdisciplinary Center for Cyber Security at Tel Aviv University in Israel. And signed MoU with Bombay Stock Exchange to cooperate on cybersecurity.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important;">In October 2016, from different Indian banks compromised as many as 32 lakh credit cards, according to National Payments Corporation of India. There were a number of cybersecurity attacks post demonetization, according to TAC Security, a cyber-security solutions provider. In 2016 and early 2017, cyber-attacks disabled the power delivery to a large number of customers in Ukraine. Denial of service attacked Turkey&#8217;s banking infrastructure bringing all banking activities to a halt last year. Bangladesh Central Bank lost the equivalent of 80 million dollars through cyber-attacks.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify;">There are over 330 CHWs who are trained and strategically deployed across six states in rural India and have been rendering services under iKure’shealthcare delivery system.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Jayashree is one the CHW who works relentlessly in her village Hubli(Karnataka). One day, she visited a woman named Pushpa who was in her first trimester and looked quite unwell.On enquiring, Pushpa was found to suffer from Epilepsy. Her family also revealed that she has been prescribed with medicines by a local doctor, but she didn’t take them regularly.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Epilepsy is a disorder of the nervous system and such patients during pregnancy have major concerns. Jayashree felt the need and promptly captured her vitals on her smartphone loaded with Wireless Health Incident Monitoring Systems, (WHIMS), and pushed the patient’s vitals on to the cloud for a quick doctor reference.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify;">For the next few days, Jayashree monitored and screened her closely and counselled her and family about different preventive measures pertaining to her health conditions. Soon after, Pushpa recovered and gave birth to a healthy child.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In the context of rural settings, it is never possible to create doctors or health clinics as required. To bridge the gap, the grassroots community members are empowered to provide clinical careenabled through WHIMS.The technology application is designed with an intuitive graphics user interface that can be efficiently used by a health worker even with a basic education.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For instance, WHIMS screen has a complete photograph of a human body.When a health worker clicks on the head, WHIMS gives options of potential symptoms of the head, such as ache, dizziness, seeing dark spots, and so on.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify;">Usually with the standard diagnostic tool, low accessibility and portability remain a huge constrain. WHIMS is accompanied with low-cost portable instruments to measure basic statistics and loaded on a tablet is carried by the CHWs in the remotest villages to diagnose patients. The patients pay an affordable rate for basic diagnostics and consultations, through which they earn additional income.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Unlike the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers) who work as community mobilizer and not authorized to deliver clinical services, these CHWs meet both the ends.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Equipped with a medical kit that consists of devices including BP machine, stethoscope, pulse oximeter, thermometer, first aid kit, weight machine, Height measuring scale and gloves,they carry medicines for basic common ailments, non-invasive hemoglobin meter, haemoglobin kit, mobile phone based sphygmomanometer, urine analyzer, calorimeter, ECG, flipcharts/ Hoardings &amp; registers.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify;">Through these CHWs, every patient is also provisioned with Digital Health Card (DTH) encrypted with a QR (Quick Response) code and during home visits. DTH gets updated with latest clinical indicators. The health data obtained from the health cards is synced to a cloud for effective utilization in the upward heath chain at both secondary and tertiary levels.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">CHW’s contact and familiarity within the community drive effective community mobilization measures. As they become an integral part of the healthcare delivery model, CHWs act as a catalyst to drive behavioral change. While they interacts and communicates the necessity on the ground and identifies appropriate health needs, it is through street plays, hoardings and message dissemination on mobile phones, theymobilize patients at different levels. They are also attuned to provide nutritional counselling, and spectacle services based on the community needs.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Further, WHIMS is upgraded with robust supply chain management framework, innovative algorithm, and Data Warehousing solutions. Driven by its CHWs, iKure aims to bring efficiency in public system &amp; programe and improve lives.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The CHW model of empowering the women community and gender mainstreaming represents transformational change in rural healthcare delivery. As they champion tech-savvy cultural values in otherwise austere facilities, and limited supply of doctors, such effort has established inspirational leaders driving catalyst change in sustainable rural development.</p>

Use of P-O-C devices is extremely portable, affordable with high accuracy rate and can be used by any health worker with a short training. This has been a critical step in rural healthcare delivery with a positive outcome on prevention, curative care and treatment procedures”.</p>

	<p style="text-align: justify !important:;">Loughborough University London has been awarded research funding from the UK-India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI) to build a secure Internet of Things (IoT) platform for use in healthcare. IoT platforms connect devices, allowing them to collect and use data. This three-year UKIERI award, led by Dr Yogachandran Rahulamathavan of the University’s Institute for Digital Technologies (IDT), will enable IoT platforms to be created that interact with people who need round-the-clock assistance, using sensors to measure movement, location and body functions such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important:;">An initial pilot testing phase will see patients in care homes from the states of West Bengal and Odisha in India recruited in order to study chronic diseases, with IoT services tailored to respond to the socio-cultural differences across regions.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify !important:;">The framework will be extended to analyse real-time physiological data from patients equipped with wireless devices whilst travelling in ambulances, before focusing on the development of a secure infrastructure for data collection and an interface which empowers users and protects the privacy of participants. The project is a collaboration between the Institute of Digital Technologies and IIT Kharagpur, supported by City University of London, eSmart Saving Ltd UK and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.</p>
