Diabetes: A Growing Global Concern and the Need for Holistic Management

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insufficient insulin production or the body’s inability to effectively use insulin. The global prevalence of diabetes is alarming, with 537 million adults (10.5% of the population) affected. This number is expected to rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045. In India, the prevalence was recorded at 9.6% in 2021, with projections indicating an increase to 10.9% by 2045. In urban centers like Chennai and Delhi, the prevalence is even higher, with reports showing rates of 22-24% among adults. This rise is closely linked to dietary shifts, reduced physical activity, and urbanization, leading to increased consumption of refined foods, sugars, and fats—factors that promote insulin resistance and the eventual onset of type 2 diabetes (IDF Diabetes Atlas, 2021).

The Growing Need for Diabetes Management: A Holistic Approach

Diabetes has become one of the most pressing global health issues, with India being dubbed the “diabetes capital of the world” by organizations like the WHO. Over 77 million people in India are living with diabetes, and this number is projected to grow substantially in the coming years. This escalating burden is largely due to modern lifestyle changes—especially increased consumption of processed foods, sedentary behavior, and urbanization—which not only raise the risk of developing diabetes but also complicate its management. As a result, diabetes is emerging as a significant public health challenge.

Managing diabetes requires a comprehensive approach. While medications and regular monitoring are fundamental, they cannot be the sole solutions. Nutrition plays a pivotal role in diabetes care, offering a means to complement medical treatments. A diet rich in natural, unprocessed ingredients can help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of complications. In recent years, there has been growing interest in integrating science with traditional wisdom to develop innovative dietary strategies. Functional foods—those rich in fibers, plant-based nutrients, and low glycemic index ingredients—are proving to be highly effective. For example, adding fiber-rich options like guar gum or antioxidant-rich curry leaves to daily meals can enhance blood sugar control and improve digestion.

On a personal level, even small dietary changes can have a significant impact. Replacing high-calorie snacks with nutrient-dense alternatives can prevent blood sugar spikes and curb cravings. Opting for a wholesome, balanced soup instead of sugary beverages can boost energy and support metabolic health. These changes not only help manage diabetes but also encourage a more mindful approach to eating and self-care. By making thoughtful food choices, we empower ourselves to take control of our health, one meal at a time. Furthermore, we can inspire our families to adopt healthier habits, promoting well-being and happiness for everyone. With functional foods and mindful eating, each meal becomes an opportunity to move towards a more vibrant and healthy life.

Natural Ingredients and Their Role in Diabetes Management

Natural ingredients like guar gum and curry leaves have shown remarkable potential in managing blood sugar levels, offering a harmonious blend of traditional knowledge and modern science. Guar gum, a soluble fiber, slows the absorption of sugars, preventing post-meal spikes in blood glucose. Research supports its effectiveness in managing blood sugar, making it a valuable addition to the diet of individuals with diabetes. Similarly, curry leaves, a staple in traditional medicine, are rich in antioxidants and possess anti-hyperglycemic properties. They help regulate blood sugar by enhancing insulin function and reducing excessive glucose production in the liver.

Indigenous wisdom, particularly from Ayurvedic practices, highlights a wide array of plants known for their beneficial effects on chronic conditions like diabetes. Modern research has validated many of these traditional remedies, further emphasizing the potential of natural plants in managing metabolic disorders. Below is a list of indigenous plants that have shown scientifically backed benefits in managing metabolic disorders:

Plant Name

Active Component

Potential Benefits

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Diosgenin, soluble fiber

Lowers blood glucose, improves insulin sensitivity

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Azadirachtin, flavonoids

Anti-diabetic properties, reduces blood glucose

Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)

Charantin, polypeptide-P

Regulates blood sugar, mimics insulin action

Amla (Phyllanthus emblica)

Vitamin C, tannins

Antioxidant, improves lipid profiles

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)

Cinnamaldehyde

Lowers fasting blood sugar, anti-inflammatory

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Curcumin

Reduces inflammation, enhances insulin action

Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis)

Polysaccharides, lectins

Improves blood sugar regulation

Curry Leaves (Murraya koenigii)

Mahanimbine, flavonoids

Supports insulin function, anti-hyperglycemic

Each of these plants offers unique benefits, addressing not just the symptoms of metabolic disorders but also targeting their root causes. By incorporating such natural ingredients into daily life—whether through food, supplements, or traditional preparations—we move closer to a holistic approach to health. Integrating the wisdom of indigenous practices with modern scientific validation provides a sustainable and effective strategy for managing chronic diseases like diabetes.

Overcoming Common Challenges in Diabetes Management

One of the most common challenges faced by individuals with diabetes is dealing with hunger pangs, cravings, and frequent eating due to fluctuating blood sugar levels. To combat this, incorporating fiber-rich and low glycemic index foods into the diet can help. These foods provide a steady release of energy, promote satiety, and reduce the need for frequent snacking, leading to better blood sugar control.

Research-Based Approaches to Functional Foods

Functional foods are designed not only to provide essential nutrients but also to help regulate blood glucose levels. Some examples of functional foods for diabetes management include:

Fiber-Enriched Snacks: Made with ingredients like guar gum and fenugreek, these snacks help maintain blood sugar balance while providing a convenient, on-the-go option for busy individuals.

Nutrient-Dense Soups: Packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, these soups offer a balanced, health-boosting alternative to traditional meals.

Protein-Based Snacks: Plant-based protein snacks provide sustained energy and help prevent sudden blood sugar spikes, while also supporting muscle health and metabolic stability.

Managing diabetes is not just about controlling blood sugar; it’s about improving overall well-being and embracing a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. By incorporating natural, functional foods into daily diets, we can do more than just manage blood glucose—we can nurture our health holistically. Ingredients like guar gum, curry leaves, and other plant-based nutrients remind us of the powerful connection between nature and health, blending traditional wisdom with modern science. This approach empowers individuals to take charge of their health in a way that feels both personal and sustainable. Every small change—a fiber-rich snack, a nutrient-dense meal, or a mindful dietary choice—can make a meaningful difference in managing diabetes and improving quality of life.

Looking forward, the innovation in functional foods holds incredible promise for diabetes management, offering new ways to tackle the challenges of the disease with solutions grounded in both science and care. By making informed choices and embracing natural ingredients, we can create a future where managing diabetes feels less like a burden and more like a journey toward vitality and happiness.

India’s business of healthcare continues to grow steadily – with its wider coverage, better services, and increasing investment. As per the India Brand Equity Foundation – the Healthcare Market in India is expected to be the US $ 372 billion in size by 2022, driven by rising incomes, greater awareness levels, higher incidence of lifestyle diseases and access to healthcare insurance. While the industry continues to be focused on operations and revenue and notwithstanding the launch of Ayushman Bharat – the world’s single largest Government-funded Healthcare program, the need for understanding and defining what can bring about change from within – is critical.

An increasingly competitive market driven by aware and technology-enabled patients and caregivers is seeing greater levels of involvement and their rapidly increasing need for driving their own health-care experiences. The Harvard Business Review believes that “the future of the global health care market lies in delivering high-value care that concentrates on Patient Experience.”

It is important to understand that Patient Experience is not just about an individual patient’s interactions – but also his or her perceptions of that caregiving experience. A Healthcare organization that consistently delivers a better quality of patient experience will be able to drive better quality of patient outcomes and in turn – better business performance.

It is in this scenario – that Team CRM Academy of Asia has partnered with Terragni Consulting and Indian Chamber of Commerce to bring you the Patient Experience Conclave & Awards 2019, to establish the Patient Experience paradigm and benchmark its performance standards – and drive the change for the entire Indian Healthcare Industry.

A recent study has found that about 10% of school children in Bengaluru are obese. 13.8% children are at risk of contracting lifestyle disease in adulthood with waistlines which are more than half their height.

School-based screening of 104,105 children studying in 138 private schools has revealed some alarming trends in school students in Bengaluru. The study was conducted by AddressHealth, the provider of health services in schools for children in India. The survey data was compiled over the current academic year and revealed a significant degree of malnutrition (both over and undernutrition) among children – with 9.2% of children being obese and another 13.7% children falling into the overweight category (overnutrition) while about 8.5% of them are too thin for their age (undernutrition).

Apart from this, 28.6% of school children have dental caries (cavities) while 15.1% have newly detected/ worsening vision problems. In addition, more than 200 children had previously undetected cardiac murmurs, and 70 children had previously undetected hearing defects. Commenting on the survey results Dr. Anand Lakshman, Founder and CEO, AddressHealth, said, “Children are increasingly vulnerable due to a variety of lifestyle. And environmental factors such as the proliferation of fast food options, lack of physical activity, too much screen time etc.

We believe Contracting lifestyle disease in adulthood, reveals a recent study By InnoHealth Editorial Team 40 Volume 3 | Issue 3 | July-September 2018 Key findings of the survey :

• About 10% of primary school children are obese. Further 13% of children overweight and 9.4% of those in middle and secondary school are too thin;
• Vision problems are more common among children in the primary and secondary age group with 1 in 7 and 1 in 5 children affected, respectively;
• Dental caries has emerged as the most neglected chronic condition among children; and
• Nearly 8% of children have clinical signs of anemia

Schools and parents/guardians should place adequate emphasis on children’s health and well-being. Beyond the usual vaccines and episodes of sickness, failing which non-communicable diseases will only become more common in the younger generation. The times are changing, and new age problems need to be addressed proactively and continuously. The data from our mental health program also suggests a moderate risk of mental health conditions amongst school children such as emotional difficulties, behavioral issues and lack of social skills”.

“Schools are not just centers for imparting formal education but also institutions that influence values, beliefs and importantly practices. A healthy lifestyle including hygiene habits must be inculcated during childhood. These positive behaviors will last through to adulthood and for the rest of a person’s life. Children are naturally inquisitive and keen learners. They can thus become both the beneficiaries and the agents of change in the family,” added Dr. Lakshman.

AddressHealth has conducted surveys in 177 schools covering 1,26,467 children across 4 Indian cities including Bengaluru, and data points to similar trends across cities with a high likelihood of chronic diseases in adulthood.

The number of children covered by the surveys over the last 12 months. It includes 1,04,105 children in Bengaluru, 652 in Delhi, 18,422 in Hyderabad, and 3,288 in Pune. The prevalence of various conditions across these four cities is as follows: obese as per BMI for age standards (8.8%), over-weight but not obese (12.6%), low BMI (8.5%), risk of lifestyle diseases [Waist/Height Ratio>0.5] (14.6%), vision problems (14.6%), and dental caries (29.7%). About 219 and 9101 children are at risk of potential heart defects and clinical anemia, respectively.

Obesity is seen across income groups. But rising rapidly in the schools catering to higher income groups and primary and secondary school children. There is an increasing trend of the risk of lifestyle disease, due to reduced physical activity, which is reflected in the significant percentage of children with a higher than recommended waist-to-height ratio.

AddressHealth’s school health services are designed by a team of pediatricians, public health experts, child psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists and other health professionals. The services include Annual Health check-ups for children; Medical Room / Tele-infirmary; School Emotional/Mental Wellbeing Services (Nurturing Schools Program); and Health Education with Workbooks (Standard 1st to 8th). Currently AddressHealth’s services encompass ~ 200,000 children in over 200 schools in Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad & Pune The AddressHealth School Health Program is based on WHO guidelines for schools.

Lifestyle diseases like chronic respiratory and heart diseases are killing more people in India than communicable ailments like Tuberculosis (TB) or Diarrhea in every states, including most backward belts, says the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative’s Report.

Among the leading non-communicable diseases, the largest disease burden or Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) rate increase from the period of 1990 to 2016 was observed for diabetes at 80 per cent, and ischaemic heart disease at 34 per cent.

In 2016, three of the five leading individual causes of disease burden in India were non-communicable, with ischaemic heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as the top two causes and stroke as the fifth leading cause. The range of disease burden or DALY rate among the states in 2016 was nine-fold for ischaemic heart disease, four-fold for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and six-fold for stroke, and fourfold for diabetes across the country.

The key metric used in the study is DALYs, which is the sum of the number of years of life lost due to premature death and a weighted measure of the years lived with disability due to a disease or injury. The use of DALYs to track disease burden is recommended by India’s National Health Policy of 2017.

While ischaemic heart disease and diabetes generally had higher DALY rates in states that are at a more advanced epidemiological transition stage toward non-communicable diseases, the DALY rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were generally higher in the Empowered Action Group (EAG) states that are at a relatively less advanced epidemiological transition stage.

The first group to make the transition in 1986 included Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The last group to do so, accounting for the highest number of people (588 million), made the transition almost a quarter of a century later, in 2010. This group included Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Odisha. India as a country made the transition in 2003.

The Report’s executive summary says with almost one-fifth of the world’s population living in India, the health status and the drivers of health loss are expected to vary between different parts of the country and between the states.

Accordingly, effective efforts to improve population health in each state require systematic knowledge of the local health status and trends. While state-level trends for some important health indicators have been available in India, a comprehensive assessment of the diseases causing the most premature deaths and disability in each state, the risk factors responsible for this burden, and their time trends have not been available in a single standardised framework.

The Report finds that the Health status improving, but major inequalities between states Life expectancy at birth improved in India from 59.7 years in 1990 to 70.3 years in 2016 for females, and from 58.3 years to 66.9 years for males.

There were, however, continuing inequalities between states, with a range of 66.8 years in Uttar Pradesh to 78.7 years in Kerala for females, and from 63.6 years in Assam to 73.8 years in Kerala for males in 2016.

The per person disease burden measured as DALYs rate dropped by 36% from 1990 to 2016 in India, after adjusting for the changes in the population age structure during this period. But there was an almost two-fold difference in this disease burden rate between the states in 2016, with Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh having the highest rates, and Kerala and Goa the lowest rates.

While the disease burden rate in India has improved since 1990, it was 72% higher per person than in Sri Lanka or China in 2016. The under-5 mortality rate has reduced substantially from 1990 in all states, but there was a four-fold difference in this rate between the highest in Assam and Uttar Pradesh as compared with the lowest in Kerala in 2016, highlighting the vast health inequalities between the states.

Large differences between states in the changing disease profile of the total disease burden in India measured as DALYs, 61% was due to communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (termed infectious and associated diseases in this summary for simplicity) in 1990, which dropped to 33% in 2016. There was a corresponding increase in the contribution of non-communicable diseases from 30% of the total disease burden in 1990 to 55% in 2016, and of injuries 18 %.
