Decoding the facts in the context of Doctor’s day……

The verse “Vaidyo Narayano Harihi” means that a doctor (healer) should be seen in the form of supreme god (Narayana).

Doctor’s day is observed in India on 1^stof July every year and it serves as an occasion for appreciating the good work and contributions of doctors, recognizing their selfless service and expressing gratitude towards them. National Doctors’ day was first celebrated in India on 1^st of July 1991 as a tribute to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was an eminent physician, a social worker and a politician. Coincidentally his birth and death anniversaries were on the same date. Indian Medical Association (IMA) has dedicated this day for all the doctors and health care workers who tirelessly work for patient care. The significance of doctors’ day was further intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world to exemplify the role of doctors and health care professionals which was indeed highly commendable.

Doctors’ day was first observed in Georgia (US State) in March 1933. On this day, greetings were given to the physicians and flowers/ bouquets were placed on the graves of doctors who had expired. Doctors’ day is celebrated across the world but on different dates in different countries. In the United States it is observed on March 30^th, in Iran it is celebrated on August 23^rd and in Cuba on December 3^rd.

Doctors are considered as epitomes of god from the ancient times. The verse “Vaidyo Narayano Harihi” means that a doctor (healer) should be seen in the form of supreme god (Narayana). But is this apt in today’s scenario ??? Unfortunately, due to various reasons this verse doesn’t hold good in the present times.

Another distressing and unhealthy issue on the rise is the habit of searching each and every medical related thing in “google” by the patients or their attendants.

Rising medical negligence and malpractice incidents, unprofessionalism and breach of medical ethics, medical education becoming a business with no proper fee regulations, increasing competition among private practicing doctors, enormous expansion of the super speciality and multispeciality corporate hospitals, violence against doctors and many other factors are contributing towards loss of virtues, integrity and nobility in doctors profession.

With the rise in cases of medical negligence, a common man is becoming more cognizant of his rights. The incidences are infact more in government run hospitals. Many cases go unnoticed or are often overlooked as the patients themselves are not aware of such incidents or are not ready to confront the situation. On the other hand, it is rather disheartening that relatives/ attendants of patients assume everything as medical negligence and indulge in violence against the doctors without properly judging a situation despite the risk explained by the doctors.

Another distressing and unhealthy issue on the rise is the habit of searching each and every medical related thing in “google” by the patients or their attendants.

The harsh reality is that due to irregular low salary and workload, there is a massive exodus of experienced and good faculties from medical colleges resulting in passing out of students without good skills, morals or ethics.

They are often boisterous and go for a second opinion or get into an argument with the health care professionals for shifting out the patient into another hospital against the medical advice and at the cost of the patient’s safety. Even though superspeciality corporate hospitals are meant for treating intricate or exceptional critical cases, there is also an increased tendency of the patients to go to superspeciality hospitals even for trivial sickness and later grumble about the high charges. Doctors are also blamed for writing an extensive list of investigations unnecessarily. But when a patient goes to seek out an expert opinion how can he complain about the high fares ??? Many times, in order to diagnose a case and come to a proper conclusion many investigations are crucial.

The irrational prescription of drugs by doctors is an alarming issue to be addressed promptly and multiple factors are contributing towards it. Attitude of the patients to achieve an instant symptomatic relief at all costs, drug promotion and unrealistic claims by manufacturers, unethical inducements, patient’s demands and working environment of the doctors are the factors influencing prescription. There is also a trend among the general population to demand the physicians for antibiotics when it is actually not needed. For example, an anxious mother demands her pediatrician to start an antibiotic for viral induced flu-like symptoms in her kid. On refusal by the pediatrician, such mothers might also prefer to change doctors.

Irrespective of the pressures, demands and inducements, a doctor must strictly abide by the Hippocratic Oath and should always think of his patient’s safety and well-being. He/she should follow the general principles of drug prescription and should always give prime consideration about the perception of drug need, drug efficacy and its cost.

Another Gordian knot in today’s society is the problem of exhaustive establishments of medical colleges in every nook and corner of the city with lack of proper fee regulations, proper infrastructure and quality in teaching due to inadequate number of experienced faculty. The harsh reality is that due to irregular low salary and workload, there is a massive exodus of experienced and good faculties from medical colleges resulting in passing out of students without good skills, morals or ethics. This again may lead to a vicious cycle of medical negligence by the under trained doctors.

The responsibility of withholding the nobility and glory of the doctor’s profession lies in the hands of the doctors, patients, government and the society as a whole. The doctor-patient relationship has to be strengthened on the basis of respect, trust, care and hope. The patients should be aware of their rights and at the same time about their responsibilities towards the doctors and hospitals.

The government should frame a proper fee structure for the government as well as the private medical colleges. Medical negligence in any form is highly inadmissible. Doctors should be vigilant at every step and must strictly abide by professional ethics irrespective of the demands, coercions and emoluments offered to them. Doctor’s day is not just a day of recognising and appreciating the work and sacrifices of doctors. The present doctors should be able to galvanize and inspire the young budding doctors to visualize their profession as an opportunity to serve their patients with care and selfless motive. The doctor’s profession should not wholly become a mere job. There is nothing special and nobler than saving a human life !!!!

‘MITRA’-the robot becomes a friend for covid-19 patients at noida hospital

Invento Robotics, Bengaluru-based start-up has designed and developed Mitra, the robot which has been installed at the entrance of Yatharth Hospital in Noida. The robot helps the Covid-19 patients speak to their near and dear ones, their families and friends alongwith counselling the patients to smoothly overcome the tough times of covid by keeping their anxiety levels under control. The robot also aids in the initial process of checking the symptoms of incoming patients. It asks the patients about their symptoms and screens their temperature. When the relevant statistics are normal then the robot prints an entry pass for the hospital visitor mentioning the result of screening, name and picture of the visitor.

The robot keeps patrolling the wards throughout the day. Since most of the covid hospitals don’t allow phones inside the ICU, a friend like Mitra is surely to come in handy as it can also make video calls and connect patients with their families. A tablet is attached to its chest which allows the patients to see their relatives and medical staff who cannot access the covid wards.

There is facial recognition technology equipped in it that helps the user to recall the ones with whom they had interacted earlier. Psychiatric consultations too happen via the screen on the robot through which the doctor interacts with the patients replying to all their queries. Mitra is also being used to carry out remote consultations with specialists at the hospital to reduce the risk of contracting the infection.

The hospital has procured two Mitra robots at a cost of INR 10 lacs each, one is installed at Yatharth Hospital, Noida and the other one is installed at the hospital’s non-covid branches in sector 110, Noida and sector Omicron 1, Greater Noida to screen patients for influenza like illnesses wherein it screens nearly 500 OPD patients and relatives of IPD patients on a daily basis.

India EU collaboration in Health sector, startup opportunities, and challenges.

In this session, the panel provides insights on market development in India, including examples of reverse innovations from India to Europe and back along with legal and IPR challenges.

InnovatioCuris and InnovatioCuris Foundation for Healthcare and Excellence started with a vision of bringing down the healthcare delivery cost and improving the quality of care.

Prof. Paul Lillrank (moderator) presented his keynote by giving insights of his ideas and implementations in the organization for which he is the chairman (Aalto Health Platform). Explained how the world famous, ARAVIND EYE CARE model was chosen and implemented by his student in Finland who studied ARVIND EYE CARE in Tamil Nadu. Stressed on technology circulation instead of technology transfer, as the later is only one directional flow. He felt India is the most innovative place in the world with the land full of opportunities.

Molshree Pandey, currently working on communicable diseases and finding ways to collaborate stakeholders in a much more efficient way. Conducts and concentrate on boot camps, road shows in Denmark, presentations to many companies; connecting and opening pathway to better delivery of care in India as well as Denmark. He was Monish Bhandari of OptiMaser™ which works for disinfection of hospital wastes including many other things.
An engineer, who appeared firmly grounded and did not betray any sign of tremendous potential his “Shudh Vayu” and “Swasthgram” campaign holds for the society by cleaning tons of carbon in air by a simple filter on roofs of cars threw light on his disruptive innovation for combating menace of spiking pollution plaguing many cities.
The engineer Amit Bhatnagar said 920,000 children die under 5 years due to air pollution worldwide. In Delhi, it is 3000 in 365 days, almost 8 deaths per day, according to UNICEF report. Air Pollution inhaled during pregnancy can cross the placenta and affect the developing brain of a fetus.
Swasthgram and Shudh Vayu were founded by Mr. Amit Bhatnagar and his common friends. Mr. Amit Bhatnagar is an IITian turned into the social entrepreneur. He did his M.S. in Bio-Engineering from Penn State (US) in 2007 and B.Tech in Mechanical, Hollywood (USA). After relocating to India, he started envisioning his life’s goal and along with common friends established Swasthgram in 2012. He uses disruptive technology, innovated & specially designed to cater to all healthcare needs.

The Saturday morning’s meet was a gathering of young innovators and industry experts in a conference hall in the national capital’s prestigious India International Centre to learn how to assess a healthcare technology for a beneficial outcome for the society.
Marking a step forward towards its promise of providing an encouraging platform to young innovators and innovative startup of the health sector, InnovatioCuris organized its fourth IC Innovators Club meeting that day. A date well was chosen, celebrating World Health Day, InnovatioCuris called on industry leaders to stand up to the pledges and join hands to take concrete steps to advance #HealthcareForAll.
We live in a culture where everyone’s opinion, views, and assessment of situations are twisted on social media if feared and hated by environmentalists (industry name say) and the public alike. Yet many a time, the scientific assessment of technology is remarkably different and tells altogether a different story. And we all know we become what we behold, we shape our tools and then our tools shape us. So, the assessment of any new tool or technology is very important. With this agenda, Denny John addressed the listeners which within no time compelled them to shed away their morning blues. Mr. John holds an external Ph.D. in HTA from Maastricht University, the Netherlands on the cost-effectiveness of vaccines related to infectious diseases in India. He is also an adjunct Scientist with ICMR-NIMS.
Being an Associate Editor for IJTAHC and Cost Effectiveness and Resource Allocation journals, he has also conducted various workshops on SR, EE and HTA training for over 300 members in Nepal, Ghana, and India. Under his literature, he has 10 peer-review publications on SR, EE and HTA, 2 book-chapters on Pharmacoeconomics, and 1 book on Systematic Reviews. Co-guiding 1 Masters and 2 Ph.D. students in HTA. He is a task force member on National Registry of Injuries in India. He is also a co-researcher on cost-effectiveness analysis of glaucoma screening in cataract camps.
The interventions used to promote health, to prevent, diagnose or treat acute or chronic diseases, or for rehabilitation which includes pharmaceuticals, devices, procedures and organizational systems used in healthcare, defines healthcare technology says, Mr. John. After he made listeners to understand what healthcare technology is, he guided them to understand what exactly HTA (Healthcare Technology Assessment) is.

A systematic evaluation of the properties of a health technology, addressing its direct and intended effects, as well as its indirect and unintended consequences, to inform decision-making is HTA. He explains, not only the assessment of the technology but also the evaluation and calculation of any input that goes into the delivery of the technology will be covered under HTA.
Narrating the story about BEMPU, a hypothermia monitoring device, he made a strong point that one should practice evidence-based approach, that stating evidence is very important not only while assessment of a technology but also in day-to-day healthy lifestyle habits. This gives context-specific inputs into the decision-making process at policy and organizational levels.
Evidence-based practice, Health economic evaluation, Policy and market analysis are the formation bricks of the architecture of HTA where Social aspects is also another brick in the wall catering its stakeholders, patients, health professionals, industry, third-party players and the government with trust and a good decision-making capability. A feedback from any stakeholder is always a good approach to perform analysis of your technology says, Mr. John. Especially when it comes to the customers, patients as (here) the case is, patient engagement is a huge buzz topic and knowing your customer is a great idea to improve. Taking feedback whether they are willing and are comfortable in using the technology and how they feel about the integration of it in their life could give you the taste of your own drug.
So, what is evidence-based practice? An evidence-based approach is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of an individual. Mr. John emphasizing on the usage and reporting of the evidence says, “wherein day-to-day life reporting of evidence is weak, the evidence should be taken based on the studies from multiple trials and research studies and not from a single study or trial”.
After stressing on the importance for stating the evidence he also explained the impact and need of economic evaluation analysis which addresses the additional health benefit gained from investment in a technology, such as the cost per additional Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) gained, by comparison of that technology to a different intervention or to no intervention.
Another important component of this valuable session was Budget Impact Analysis (BIA). Mr. John told that BIA addresses the affordability of the technology, such as the net annual financial cost of adopting the technology for a finite number of years.

All this directly or indirectly contributes to the assessment of healthcare technology that one plans to adopt and present. In addition to this, he also explained briefly the ways a person can perform the economic evaluation of the technology under observation like cost-effective analysis, cost-benefit analysis or be it cost-utility analysis.
Mr. John also walked listeners through the schematic structure of Health Technology Assessment in India (HTAIn). Also, telling about how patients and consumers can be engaged in HTA, what all parameters are there on which they can evaluate the technology and how it would be beneficial for the same.

India is a country of diversity with 1.3 billion population of which 70 per cent resides in villages and have access to 30 per cent of medical assets of the country. Poverty is a significant issue of the country, despite having one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, clocked at an economic growth of 7.6 per cent in 2015. It is estimated that 23.6 per cent of Indian population, or about 276 million people, live below $1.25 per day.

As Health is a state subject-there is lot of mismatch in states like Kerala and Punjab have best health indicators, while Uttar Pradesh is the poorest as per the NITI Aayog report. Indian government spends approx. 1.5 per cent of its GDP on health sector and mplans to make it 2.5 per cent which is much less than many developing countries while the USA has dedicated 16 per cent of its GDP. India is riddled with very basic public health issues leading to disease burden. Keeping this in mind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched six initiatives: Open Defecation free country by 2019, Swachh Bharat Mission, National Health Policy 2017, Digital India with e-health, medical device manufacturing and door-to-door screening of chronic diseases.

The healthcare needs holistic approach which depends on multiple factors. The present government has taken many positive steps including launching of National Health Policy 2017 after the gap of 12 years. It has announced many initiatives like health insurance of people who cannot afford basic healthcare and upgrading of health infrastructure.

The regulation of medical devices have been brought out and is applicable w.e.f January 1, 2018 ending uncertainty of medical device manufacturers having global market of 220 billion US dollar. Challenges bring opportunities such as Indian healthcare market is around US$ 100 billion while it is expected to grow US$ 280 billion by 2020. The healthcare IT market is US$ one billion and is expected to grow 1.5 times by 2020. There is requirement of 7 lakh hospital beds which need investment opportunities of 25-30 billion US dollar. We need to bring innovations in hospital planning,devices, diagnostics, drugs and use of technology to reduce healthcare delivery cost and yet quality.

We failed targets of Health for All by 2000, National Rural Health Mission, and Millennium Development Goals and now launched Universal Health Coverage; its success would depend on providing healthcare facilities and strict accountability. We need to focus on primary health care and customise our healthcare delivery system by learning from experiences of other countries.

The concept of Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) making financial package for group of diseases which is known to patients, providers and third party payors should be considered by improving deficiency found in its execution by the USA.

The various schemes of present government are appreciable but success would depend on strict monitoring, corporate hospitals have high cost and many unethical practices are reported every day in media. Public hospitals to National Rural Health Mission have not delivered as required because of corruption, lack of resources and application of management practices. The need is not old wine in new bottle but strict control in implementation of various schemes launched.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has announced the launch of a new set of innovative health services featuring futuristic technology solutions – particularly artificial intelligence (AI) during its participation at Arab Health 2017.

His Excellency Al Ketbi, has announced the launch of the Smart Mirror which is the first of its kind globally to allows patients to analyze their body’s temperature, pulse, weight, height, and their body mass index. It also features a weather forecast component that can be utilized by looking through the mirror.

The Smart Mirror is an active tool for patients suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, as well as blood pressure problems, as it monitors their weight, height, blood pressure and body temperature. The Chatbot service is driven by basic artificial intelligence software and facilitates ‘smart’ online chats that help reduce healthcare cost as well as improve the flow of health services.

The interactive AI facility can assist the Ministry by mimicking human conversations to answer questions which can also be integrated with other software platforms to allow other communication activities such as sending messages and holding telemedicine conferences via Skype with a physician.

Another smart technology, ‘Kiomatik’, will welcome patients and guests and perform other reception duties via an innovative system, motion tracking, a high-definition camera, and three-dimensional display devices embedded in a robot.

It will also provide necessary information about the health facilities, set appointments, and answer basic questions from patients.

The Kiomatik Beacon technology also operates as a wireless device with face-recognition capability. The patient is immediately recognized upon arrival at the health facility and informed about his or her schedule which will appear at the reception platform without the assistance of any hospital employee.

Kiomatik reduces the need for computers and other announcement systems as medical staff can use the apps installed on smart watches and smartphones to communicate with patients and inform them whenever they need to visit a health facility for examination.

An advanced self-registration service ‘Kiosk’ can recognize patients’ faces using a 17-inch screen that registers them upon arrival at the hospital or medical center. This pioneering technology is still currently under research and development.

Now, a magnet (Magnamosis) that may make surgical stitches history

A magnetic doughnut-shaped device has been developed that could be the end of stitches and staples. It’s being tested in a trial in the U.S. after results from animal studies suggested it could be highly effective as reported by the Daily Mail. Researchers leading the California trial say the device could be suitable for tens of thousands of procedures and will “revolutionise this area.”

The new device holds the two ends with a strong magnetic bond that researchers believe leads to a more secure anastomosis and faster healing and it is safer than standard techniques, as it can be done using less invasive surgery, meaning a lower risk of complications such as leaks. It’s also said to be cheaper.

The new device, the Magnamosis, is a method of connecting the pieces using the attraction between two magnets, rather than staples or stitches. It consists of two ring magnets, each 23mm in diameter, which have concave or convex surfaces so that they fit snugly against each other.

So far, this process has been shown to take less than a week using the magnet. It then automatically loosens its magnetic hold and is naturally removed from the body.

A series of animal studies have shown that it is reliable and effective, and it is now being used in a clinical trial with patients for the first time.

MiraCradle – Neonate Cooler, receives the CE and ISO 13485 certification

MiraCradle – Neonate Cooler, an affordable cooling device developed by Pluss in collaboration with CMC Vellore, receives the prestigious CE certification and ISO 13485. UL, a premier global independent safety science company is the accredited body that certified MiraCradle. MiraCradle – Neonate Cooler is an affordable passive cooling device which uses the advanced save Phase Change Material (PCM) technology to cool newborns suffering from birth asphyxia. Birth asphyxia is the second largest cause of neonatal deaths in India and across the world. It is easy to use, safe, lightweight and portable and gives the precise temperature control of 33-34°C for a period of 72 hours with minimal manual supervision and no requirement of constant electricity supply. AddressHealth raises US$1.5 million in series a funding

Primary healthcare network, Address Health has raised $1.5 million in Series A funding led by Gray Matters Capital with participation from existing investor, Unitus Seed Fund.

The Bengaluru-based company, which runs school-based neighbourhood clinics and school health programs, will use the investment to expand the model to other schools in Bangalore.

Started in 2010 by doctors Anand Lakshman and Anoop Radhakrishnan, Address Health has reached more than 1 lakh children through on-site services and screening programs to identify health issues and provided early intervention to prevent them from suffering as young adults.

The funding will allow them to expand the reach of their unique model of healthcare, which leverages schools, to deliver comprehensive primary healthcare to children proactively, at a low cost.

Lifespan India introduces unique, non invasive screening test for Diabetes, Cardiometabolic complication

Lifespan, India’s largest chain of diabetes and cardiometabolic clinics introduces the R.I.S.C. test – a unique, non invasive, screening test for risk assessment. SRL Diagnostics introduces technique to diagnose alcoholic liver

SRL Diagnostics, the leading diagnostic chain in India, for the first time has introduced a blood test to diagnose fibrosis in alcoholic liver. Introduced at a price of Rs. 3,900, this non –invasive test has high degree of accuracy in diagnosing liver damage due to alcohol. It is an innovative blood based test to diagnose the stage of damage to liver due to alcohol consumption. Alcoholic liver disease is the most common cause of liver damage in India.

In this test, few milliliters of blood are collected and multiple tests are performed on the same. The results of the tests are fed into a mathematical algorithm, which gives out the stage of liver damage.

According to the World Health Organization, 4.5 per cent of Indian men and 0.6 per cent of Indian women aged 15 years or more suffer from alcohol use disorders. Also, 395 men and 196 women out of every million population in India die of liver cirrhosis every year. According to estimates by SRL, alcoholic Liver Disease is a spectrum of disorders starting with fatty liver, which progresses to hepatitis and if alcohol consumption is unabated, it progresses to cirrhosis in 20 per cent of cases. Approximately, two-thirds of such deaths amongst men and one-thirds amongst women are attributable to alcohol related diseases.

Such a blood based test would be available through the vast network of SRL Laboratories and could prove to be of great value in assessing liver damage due to chronic alcohol consumption.

The Paediatric Network Partners With Josh Software To Create A Collaborative Platform in the Paediatric Eco-system;

Dr. Atish Laddad, a prominent paediatrician in Maharashtra, joined hands with Ruby on Rails Experts, Josh Software, to create a solution for providing an end to end solution, not only for the paediatricians, but also for the parents and their children. The Paediatrics Network, a brainchild of Dr. Laddad, simplifies and streamlines the process, makes it paperless and reduces the time of consultation significantly. This solution allows automation of prescriptions, patients’ historical records, appointments,vaccination records and capturing child’s milestones. This information gets stored on cloud and can be accessed from anywhere and anytime by both doctors and parents. It allows login for doctors, nurses, receptionists and parents.

Josh Software developed The Paediatric Network using Rails APIs and Angular framework. They have also created a mobile application for The Paediatric Network, which will enable parents to access the portal while on the go and take a confirmed appointment with the regular paediatrician in less than a minute. The mobile application has been developed in ionic framework and work on both Android and iOS platform.

It helps in bridging the gap between parents, their kids and paediatricians. By enrolling into TPN, a child will be more closely monitored by medical professionals. This program will help parents, especially working parents, to be at ease as challenges in the changing health patterns of their kid will be observed at initial stages and necessary actions can be taken well in time.

The solution was opened to beta users in July 2016, and currently, a total of 12 paediatricians have registered on the platform and are providing their services to the parents. There has been great interest from the entire community for this platform, and the adoption looks to increase exponentially in the coming months.

AMRIT will reduce the burden of out-of-pocket expenses on patients in India

With the aim to reduce the expenditure incurred by common patients on treatment of cancer and heart diseases, the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Shri J P Nadda inaugurated the Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) outlet at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The AMRIT retail outlets will sell drugs at highly discounted rates. These outlets have a very comprehensive list of medicines that are available across range of products. Nine AMRIT Pharmacies have been set up and Safdarjung Hospital is the 10th of this kind.More than 195 drugs for treatment of Cancer and 186 drugs for treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases are being sold through AMRIT with a discount of more than 90% are available to patients. More than 1.77 lakhs patients have been benefitted till date. This has resulted in saving of around Rs.13.00 crores out of pocket expenditure to the patients which translates into an average discount of 69% on MRP. The Government is planning to open 300 new outlets in the country. The project has been floated in a tie-up with government-owned HLL Lifecare Ltd (HLL) which is mandated to establish and run the AMRIT chain of pharmacies across the country. HLL has informed that the value of drugs dispensed (till 30th May) from seven outlets is around Rs. 7.00 crores while the MRP for the same was Rs.20.00 crores.

Indian Government launches patients’ feedback initiative ‘MeraAspataal’

Union minister of health and family welfare launched the “MeraAspataal ” initiative at the third National Summit on Good and Replicable Practices and Innovations in public health facilities at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The initiative is an ICT-based Patient Satisfaction System (PSS) named “MeraAspataal / My Hospital” for implementation in public and empanelled private hospitals and is envisaged to empower the patient by seeking his / her views on quality of experience in a public healthcare facility. A multi-channel approach will be used to collect patients’ feedback i.e. web portal, mobile application, Short Message Service (SMS), Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS).

3M India, CII Young Innovators Challenge Award 2016

• Microbutor developed by Ganesh Bhere of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai along with Ashwini Gaikwad of S.S Jondhale College of Engineering, Dombivali and Ashwin Pawade of IIT, Bombay is electricity free, handy and low cost equipment which can be easily used to detect microbial contamination of water. They were the winners in the technical category.

• The runner up under the technical category was for Samay-Sancharak, Braille enabled wearable wrist watch and cell-phone for blind people. The device was developed by RohitBharatkumar Singh of Thakur Institute of Management Studies & Research along with HitarthNarsi Patel of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering &TanmayVinayShinde of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The innovation displayed the integration of mobile phones with wearable watch design that can act as an interface for the blind to manage their calls and texts effectively.

• In the Social Category, the winner was ‘Saathi’, the first fully biodegradable and ecofriendly sanitary pads made from waste banana tree fiber for women across India.

Cochlear launches first off-the-ear hearing device- KANSO

Dr. Reddy’s announces Purple Health, a unique patient-centric platformthat takes care beyond the pill

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd announced the launch of Purple Health, a unique platform designed to inspire patient-centric innovation and deliver solutions that address unmet needs of patients. Built around four pillars of awareness, access, adherence and experience of therapy for patients, Purple Health is another affirmative step forward by Dr. Reddy’s to institutionalize patient-centricity across the organization, stemming from its core belief ‘Good Heath Can’t Wait’. As the first major initiative under Purple Health, the company launched a new range of innovative, patient-centric packaging that aims to enhance the therapy experience for over 20 million patients each year. Captain T Cell: Start-up from the MDC wins OneStart competition in London

For the first time, a German team has won the world’s biggest life-science start-up competition. Captain T Cell, founded by Dr. Felix and several colleagues at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), beat 400 international start-ups to win prize money totalling GBP 100,000. The team will use the funds to further develop their innovative approach to cancer immunotherapy. Their goal is to create a platform for the production of personalized, cancer-specific T cell receptors. With the help of these receptors, the body’s own T cells, so called ‘killer cells’, are able to find and specifically destroy cancer cells in the patient’s body.Captain T Cell is supported by the MDC’s own Technology Transfer Office and by the SPARK Berlin program — a mentoring network from the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the Stiftung Charité that promotes application-oriented projects in biomedicine both financially and through consultation and training programs.
