Chronological age of a person refers to the number of years a person has lived since their birth and it is dependent only on time. Biological age refers to how old a person’s body seems to be in terms of health and physiological functioning and it can get influenced by a number of factors. As per a new study, stress is one of those factors.

Previous reports have hinted at the possibility of short-term fluctuations in biological age but whether such changes are reversible, has until now remained unexplored. So as per a new study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, the biological age of humans undergoes a rapid increase in response to various forms of stress. But interestingly, it also found out that it can be reversed when the tension eases.

To carry out the study, researchers used DNA methylation clocks to measure and note changes in biological age as it responds to stress in humans and mice. Periods of trauma like postpartum recovery, emergency surgery and Covid-19 recovery were looked into. It was found that the increase in biological age was restored within days.

The impact of stress on biological age is huge wherein stress can accelerate the biological ageing process, leading to premature ageing. In stress the human body releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol which can increase blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels. Theses physiological changes are helpful in short term but chronic stress can cause damage to cells and tissues throughout the body. The protective caps known as telomeres, on the ends of chromosomes, can be shortened by stress, which can contribute to ageing of cells. Shortened telomeres have been linked to age-related diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. It is already known that chronic stress leads to inflammation which in turn leads to the development of many diseases associated with ageing.

Therefore, it is needless to say that a person must and has to manage stress through exercise, relaxation techniques, balanced diet, proper sleep and other stress-reducing activities which may slow down the ageing process and promote healthy ageing.

When older patients are admitted to the hospital where they may be forced to become inactive leading to ‘post-hospital syndrome’. This syndrome is associated with a period of vulnerability after recovery that causes various health conditions and even disability. A new research states that asking elderly people to get out of their bed and moving more can help avoid physical decline, even though there has been no clarity about what type of or how of an activity might be effective to bring about the desired changes.

To find an answer to the abovesaid, researchers assessed published clinical trials that involved people above the age of 50 years who had been admitted to the hospital for serious illnesses. The study included 19 clinical trials, published between 2000-2022, involving 3842 participants.

After pooling in the trial results it was found that to counter the effects of bed rest, either walking 25 minutes a day or 25 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity or 40 minutes of light intensity physical activity was the minimal dose. For optimal improvements in one’s physical function, it was estimated to be either 50 minutes of slow walking a day or 40 minutes of combined activities like 20 minutes of aerobics and 20 minutes of exercises with resistance bands.

The study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that a mix of physical activity in any one daily session and slow-paced walking were the most effective. But even just walking was 80% effective.

So, if walking being the most potent intervention is provided, the beneficial effects of in-hospital supervised physical activity programs can be maximized with just 25 minutes per day of slow-paced walking which seems to be an achievable target for most hospitalized older adults. Thus, this meta-analysis has provided us with critical information to support the use of physical activity as a core part of the daily routine of acutely hospitalized older adults.

Artificial intelligence (AI) reading human thoughts might soon be a reality with the efforts of researchers who conducted a study at the Biomedical Imaging Centre at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, USA. Here scientists have developed a technology that makes it possible to turn thoughts into text, wherein they trained AI to read people’s brain scans and recreate a whole story only from their brainwaves. Participants were made to sit in an fMRI machine and there they were asked to listen, watch or imagine a story while sitting in the machine. The AI was able to read the brainwaves and accurately predict and recreate what the story was which was thought of by the participant either by listening, watching or imagining.

As per the scientists the results had an accuracy of up to 82%. The USP of this technology is that it is a non-invasive method and a real leap forward compared to the earlier works which have been done in this context till now. Uptil now AI has only been able to predict typically single words or short sentences. So, this innovation is surely a jump which could one day help people who have lost the ability to communicate. The study has been published in the peer-review journal Nature Neuroscience.

The AI did not reproduce the story word for word though, instead it picked up on the concepts being triggered in the minds of the participants’ and produced an approximation. Some participants were made to see a video with no sound. In these cases, their AI decoder was able to capture the essence of the video from participants’ thoughts. It was also noticed that the machine could be easily fooled. For instance, when a participant was hearing a story and scientists asked them to think about another story, to think about animal names or to count, the decoder’s accuracy dropped. Thus, it made mistakes too. So, the negative point of this technology is that, it can only be done in a laboratory as it needs the MRI machine. But the scientists hope that this method could become more portable in the future with more compact technology.

A team of researchers from Stanford University, USA have developed a bandage that uses sensors to monitor wound healing. A thin electronic layer on the bandage has temperature sensors which monitor a wound. If required, they can trigger more electrical stimulation to accelerate tissue closure.

The USP of this product is that it has duality of sensing and stimulating both in the same device. The device speeds up the healing of wounds along with keeping a track of how the wound is improving. Thus, it promotes faster closure of wounds, increases new blood flow to injured tissue and enhances skin recovery by significantly reducing scar.

Before going into mass production, this device needs to overcome data storage issues and the cost component. Eventually this smart bandage can offer significant help to people with suppressed immune systems and diseases like diabetes where wound healing is delayed.

ChatGPT is a rapidly evolving field and is proving to be revolutionary especially in the field of healthcare wherein doctors are also using it to write medical notes. Taking a note of this scenario, the Australian Medical Association has asked its Federal Government that artificial intelligence protections should include ensuring that clinicians make the final decisions. In May 2023 five hospitals in Perth’s South Metropolitan Health Service were advised to stop using ChatGPT for writing medical records for patients after it was observed that some staff had been using the large language model for the practice.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has submitted discussion paper on safe and responsible AI to its Federal Government as it feels that there is a need for strong rules and transparency to protect patients and healthcare professionals around the use of artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry. In Australia the AI regulation gap needs to be addressed especially in healthcare as there lies the potential for patient injury from system errors, systemic bias embedded in algorithms and increased risk to patient privacy. The final decision must always be made by a human and this decision must be a meaningful one and not just a tick box exercise.

Thus, AI protections should include ensuring that clinicians make the final decisions and there is informed consent by the patient for any diagnostic or treatment done by using AI. The AMA has also emphasized on the protection of patient data and has demanded to follow ethical and equity approaches when the AI regulations are being framed.

AMA opines that the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act which will categorise the risks of different AI technologies and establish an oversight board, should be considered by the Australian Government while formulating AI regulations. It is imperative to say that AI will ultimately improve health outcomes for patients but it very important to get the systems right in the first place.

Amazon has been trying to enter into the health-care industry for quite sometime but has gained little success. In 2020 the company had launched its own online pharmacy after it acquired PillPack in 2018. In 2018 Amazon had teamed up with JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway to launch an incubator improve employer health programs which eventually shut down in 2021. Amazon has also acquired health-care provider OneMedical earlier this year. In November 2022 Amazon launched it’s virtual platform named ‘Amazon Clinic’ for users to connect with health-care provider with telemedicine to treat common health conditions like acne, migraines, hair loss and sinus infections. Recently Amazon announced that now it will cater to users in all 50 states and Washington D.C in the US through Amazon Clinic via video visits.

Amazon does not provide the telemedicine service by itself instead it happens through Amazon Clinic as a platform to connect telemedicine partners with patients, its current partners being Hello Alpha, Wheel, SteadyMD and Curai Health. As of now, due to regulatory issues, message-based chat on Amazon Clinic is only available in 34 states. The service is user friendly wherein users select their condition, choose a provider, then answer a brief questionnaire. Users can choose to connect with a clinician over video or text message, depending on where they live. The e-commerce giant is able to deliver care in time by ensuring that the provider groups are adequately staffed across all 50 states.

Amazon Clinic doesn’t yet accept insurance but consumers can use insurance to help pay for medications prescribed through the service. Prescriptions can be filled at any pharmacy including Amazon’s own online pharmacy which handles fulfilment and delivery.
