Drone Rules, 2021 has replaced the complex approval process required to fly drones beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS). Certification has also been made easier.

The Healthcare Industry being so dynamic in nature, asks for innovations and new inventions at every moment. These inventions might be out of curiosity or necessity. The innovations done in the Healthcare Industry are aimed at two major aspects; provide effective care to the patients and increase efficiency of the service providers (Physicians, Hospitals & Other Clinical Staff.) We must note that the health status of a nation is not only reflective of its citizen’s well-being but also impacts its economic advancement. A healthy population is more productive and effectively contributes towards the overall progress of the country. This makes healthcare coverage for each citizen vital.

Over the years India has improved immensely in health parameters such as life expectancy, mortality rates, health & sanitation, immunization, among others. Emerging technologies such as IoT, 5g, Robotics etc. have changed the way healthcare industry operates and the patients’ experience. As with nearly all other sectors in the world, digital innovation has proven to be a real tipping point in the healthcare sector globally. Emerging digital healthcare solutions not only improve access to healthcare services, but they have the potential to create holistic healthcare ecosystems. All health needs for a patient – from consultancy and diagnostics to medicine delivery, home healthcare, and remote patient monitoring can be served via these ecosystems, which will also help maintain comprehensive electronic medical records and build a patient’s longitudinal history.

The Government’s focus on digitization of healthcare, has given a rise to integration of new technologies and data management. In the long run, it will bridge the gap between physicians and patients or between two physicians, especially in remote areas. Taking a step ahead, the recently announced financial budget for 2022-23 emphasized on creating an open platform for the National Digital Health Ecosystem, consisting of digital registries of health providers and health facilities, unique health identity and universal access to health facilities. Such foundational changes can be challenging on an organizational level but can result in a notable transformation due to its compound effect.

Ayushman Bharat Digital Health Mission is launched with a vision of creating a national digital health ecosystem that supports universal health coverage in an efficient, accessible, inclusive, affordable, timely and safe manner based upon standard digital systems ensuring the security, confidentiality and privacy of health-related personal information. It has four major components viz. Health ID, Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), Health Facility Registry (HFR) & Health Records (PHR). The mission aims at creating a common health platform for individuals (patients), Healthcare professionals, Healthcare Facilities & the Policy makers i.e. State & Central Govt. Health care professionals across disciplines will have better access to a patient’s medical history (with the necessary informed consent) for prescribing more appropriate and effective health interventions. The integrated ecosystem will also enable a better continuum of care. ABDM will help digitize the claims process and enable faster reimbursement.

This will enhance the overall ease of providing services amongst the health care providers. The implementation of ABDM is expected to significantly improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency of health service delivery overall. Patients will be able to securely store and access their medical records (such as prescriptions, diagnostic reports and discharge summaries), and share them with health care providers to ensure appropriate treatment and follow-up. ABDM will empower individuals with accurate information to enable informed decision making and increase accountability of healthcare providers. Moreover, the healthcare facilities will also be easily accessible to the individuals with the help of geolocation provided on search engines & they can treat patients from throughout the country with the help of Health ID created on ABDM which will be common for any public or private healthcare facility in the country containing all their medical history as consented by the individual.

Like ‘’The Medicine from the Sky (MFTS)’’ programme in India’s Telangana state commenced with the agenda to replicate urban-grade healthcare in rural areas and address unique scenarios that affect local populations.

Another highlight is the introduction of Drone Deliveries to remote areas, to provide better access to the healthcare facilities. While drone deliveries have been in the works for a while, liberalized drone guidelines for commercial operators have facilitated adoption at a large scale, Drone Rules, 2021 has replaced the complex approval process required to fly drones beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS). Certification has also been made easier. Besides, the government is creating special corridors for drone delivery. Under the Drone (Amendment) Rules, 2022, commercial drone flyers do not require ‘remote pilot license’ to legally fly. They simply require a remote pilot certificate, which can be issued by an authorized remote pilot training organization.

The Healthcare Industry will be the first large-scale adopter of commercial drone delivery after the government liberalized rules for operating drones in August-2021. Skye Air Mobility, a drone delivery startup has partnered with 85% of organized diagnostic centres, including SRL Diagnostics and Redcliffe to deliver test samples and medicines using drones. Besides, the company is working with e-commerce and food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Dunzo, who are planning to use drones in cities for delivering groceries. Drones will allow multiple flights and reduce costs on manpower and vehicle substantially. States are also running trials for commercial drone delivery. Like ‘’The Medicine from the Sky (MFTS)’’ programme in India’s Telangana state commenced with the agenda to replicate urban-grade healthcare in rural areas and address unique scenarios that affect local populations.

The recently concluded MFTS 45 days trials in the Vikarabad district of Telangana state provide sufficient evidence of the advantages and potential of the technology, especially when combined with aviation policy changes. They provide a proof of concept not just of the technology but also the approach adopted and serve as a model for implementation in the developing world. In the first scheme of its kind, 8 participating drone consortia conducted long-range temperature-controlled vaccine deliveries in rural areas which were beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS), thus paving the way for numerous other programmes of a similar nature in the region, such as blood stock, diagnostic specimens, Reduce mortality caused by snakebites or rabies, Improve treatment of cases that require second- and third-line antibiotics, Provide “urban” standard of care to rural patients and many more.

Going a level up in the field of Healthcare, IT has become a need now as it will not only improve operational efficiency but also help in reducing the overall cost in the long-term. Adapting AI in the Hospitals has several advantages, listing some of them below:

Accuracy in the various Diagnostic procedures by stitching multiple images such as CT scan for detecting tumors, cancers, etc.

Remote Patient Monitoring Systems provide real time patients’ vitals’ information such as BP, Pulse, Temperature which helps the doctors & nurses to monitor patients from anywhere without any physical contact & also helps them in making prompt decisions w.r.t patient care. India based startup Helyxon is offering an AI-based biosensor 98.6 Fever Watch which continuously monitors temperature digitally and alerts doctors or attendants about any abnormal spike. Devices like Cube Sensors that are very simply designed cubes to measure air quality, temperature, humidity, noise, light, air pressure and based on patients’ personal information, they adjust the relevant factors for optimizing their well-being at home.

Reducing Need for Follow-Up Visits by tracking patients’ health remotely with the help of wearable devices or the use of Health Robots or AI Doctors that can assist and serve the patients 24/7.

Wearable devices are one of the biggest applications of IoT in Healthcare Industry. They not only help in tracking the patients’ vitals but also help in managing the crowd with the help of geo tracking sensor by sending data about each device’s current location and alert when people exceed from predefined limit at specific area. A such example is a Digital Tattoo that captures the electrical activity of your heart (ECG) and/or the blood pressure levels. Devices like Vein Scanners could be used handy in the hospitals- to ease the job of phlebotomist, to find veins, especially for the dehydrated patients which otherwise becomes a tedious task for them. This will also make ease for the patients as it will cause them lesser pain and difficulty.

A research team led by Boston University has used 3D printing technology to develop a miniature replica of a human heart – and it beats like the real thing. The researchers believe their heart chamber replica could serve as a testbed to study how the organ works in the human body. It can be used to track how the heart grows in an embryo, how heart tissue is affected by diseases, and how effective new medications are in treating said diseases, all without the need for human testing.

The role of Virtual Reality is being studied in palliative care. In fact chronic pain patients have been seen to take less pain medication when they play VR games. What if dying Covid patients could have visited their favorite places using VR? Imagine also if hologram technology could be leveraged the way NASA did in teleporting a doctor to the International Space Station. Using holograms to bring patients’ loved ones to their rooms can likely have a positive impact on their state of mind, thereby reducing the stress on our physicians.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in healthcare not only for decision support but to reduce the administrative burden that contributes to physician burnout. To ease the burden, AI-powered voice solutions like Suki are working to reduce doctors’ documentation workload and improve access to patient information. Jallel Harrati, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Suki, compares the Redwood City, California-based company’s flagship application Suki Assistant to Apple’s Siri, but for doctors. As Suki seeks to continually improve the functionality of its digital assistant, the company announced last week that it had added new voice-enabled capabilities.

The voice solution Suki Assistant uses machine learning and natural language processing to accurately understand and document information and respond to physician commands, according to the company. Digital technologies are being harnessed to support the healthcare industry worldwide, including population surveillance, providing remote and personalized care, evaluation of interventions based on mobility data and communication with the public. Various Nations’ Governments are also taking initiatives and focusing towards digitization to transform the face of Healthcare Industry.

Composed by: “Neha Lal, Senior General Manager, Hospital Operations & HR, comes with an immense knowledge in the field of Hospital management. She is presently associated with GCS Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Ahmedabad. She is also associated with NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare) as NABH Assessor from Quality Council of India (QCI) New Delhi. For her contributions she was conferred with many prestigious accolades.”

Suddenly due to shortage of oxygen the pressure in the oxygen lines started falling and for a few minutes I was gasping for breath. Luckily, my nurse incharge due to his good presence of mind has put all ICU patients on cylinders till the main line oxygen pressure was restored. I could see death in front of my eyes but wanted to stay strong mentally therefore I was praying and motivating myself with the thought that I have a purpose to live for.

Few days passed and slowly I was recovering and was off the bipap. Shifted to ward with high oxygen flow. Parents were in Delhi and virtually I could see them after a few days on a video call. They almost cried on seeing me. Loved ones cheered me through the video calls.

Upskilling Existing Medical Practitioners through Online Courses could Strengthen Our Health Systems – A Case Study in Anti-Microbial Resistance

Health innovations are necessary to alleviate the global burden of disease and the suffering and mortality that ensues. We generally think of innovations in health as advances in medtech, digital health and pharmaceutical discoveries. While in many areas, these kinds of technological advances have led to increasing enhancements in health outcomes, in some areas we have slipped backward through overuse of these medical interventions, threatening the gains in health from the Millennium Development Goals and negatively impacting the Sustainable Development Goals. Antimicrobial resistance is one such example. This article explores the notion of short-term online education as an innovative intervention to address unmet needs in the Indian health system as it affects antimicrobials.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) refers to the mutating ability of microbes – including bacteria, fungus and viruses – to adapt to pharmaceutical treatments and become resistant, reducing or eradicating the effectiveness of medicines as treatment of bacterial infection or disease. This means perceived advances in healthcare, such as treatment of tuberculosis, have faced setbacks as the bacteria causing tuberculosis becomes multi-drug resistant, leading to increased deaths. It is estimated that AMR will be the cause of 10 million deaths per year by 2050 – causing greater mortalitythan cancer. The issue is a global one and has led to the World Health Assembly adopting a Global Action Plan on AMR, requiring each member country to adopt National Action Plans.

The issue is a global one and has led to the World Health Assembly adopting a Global Action Plan on AMR, requiring each member country to adopt National Action Plans.

India has a complicated health environment – one of the highest burdens of infectious diseases, coupled with one of the lowest public expenditures on healthcare in the world. India is also the highest consumer of antibiotics, with the trend only increasing – in part due to the need to treat bacterial infections and to cover prescription, misuse and availability of antibiotics without prescription.

This health crisis requires a multipronged effort – a multidisciplinary approach by multiple actors in government, industry and educators. India’s National Action Plan identifies that key challenges to AMR include inappropriate prescribing practices and misuse of antibiotics by humans. India is working to set in place stronger health systems and has invested in a stronger primary healthcare system with the implementation of the National Health Policy 2017 and the establishment of the Ayushman Bharat. These national policy responses will go a long way in establishing a framework for primary healthcare strengthening but are not able to provide for a holistic solution to gaps in the health system. While the Indian government is also working to reform the MBBS through amendments to the Medical Council of India legislation and changes to the curriculum, the results of these interventions will take years to work through the system and won’t be able to make material impact today.

Short courses as a medical intervention for AMR Inevitably, interventions are required from a wide range of actors. While national and state governments and industry are often called upon for innovative responses, given that unnecessary prescriptions or misuse by patients is a major identified problem incontributing to AMR, a largely untapped resource is the role that educators can play in the upskilling of existing medical practitioners to respond to immediate weaknesses in the health system to address such global health challenges. While online education interventions may be potentially smaller in scale, it could have far greater direct and local impact in localities across India, particularly in smaller cities.

As an example, the Australian Institute of Medical Administration and Compliance (AIMAC) has developed courses to facilitate good prescribing and dispensing practices. Designed for health professionals, Seema Gupta and Veena Sehgal have created short courses that in just one hour would assist general practitioners in following proper prescribing processes. Courses are written to address an unmet gap that exists between longer term academic courses and the practical issues faced by doctors every day. There is pressure by patients to come away from a doctor’s visit with a prescription, instead of sound advice for medical treatment, which may include simple rest rather than a drug prescription. The courses provide GPs with a quick and easy suite of information and tools about where to obtain further information to increase the quality of their prescription methods and improves collaboration between doctors and pharmacists by having them better understand their respective roles and the instructions being provided to the patient.

Often, it is the social dimension that is underestimated and undervalued when delivering healthcare. While there is a greater focus on patient-centric care and the experience of patients in thehealthcare system, short online courses offer one way of improving awareness of the role each actor undertakes in the prescription process and builds a sense of teamwork between the different members of the healthcare team to provide optimal health outcomes.

Interventions like these may be small in scale, but by empowering our frontline health workers, GPs and pharmacists to better understand the role overprescription and poor use of antibiotics can have on global challenges like AMR, such local interventions can have immediate impact on the lives and health of individual patients, in their respective cities and panchayats, and on the health system as a whole.

Innovations in upskilling to increase the quality of health services to improve, not only patient care, but address gaps in the health system will go a long way to addressing global health challenges such as antimicrobial resistance.

When we discuss life in general, we run across various issues that influence our lives, some which we physically observe and some which we candidly feel. As such, the subject of sex in India is surrounded by a multitude of social standards, religious confinements, and taboos which leave no scope for discussion about the sexually transmitted disease.

YO Home Sperm Test – Now in India

There are more than 20 types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which are caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses, and yeasts. Bacterial infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are such little-discussed STIs. Though gonorrhea is as pervasive as chlamydia, it is rarely diagnosed and tested. These infections may cause infertility in women as well as in men and have the potential to become the next SUPERBUG within a decade.

From Khajuraho to condoms, we as a country are known for hypocrisy about ‘SEX’ in our mindset. A nation that has swung from the extremes of religious rigors to the extremes of uninhibited debauchery, STIs duck and display voluntarily. It leaves us no surprise when ongoing reports point at expanding patterns of STIs among teenagers. The reasons are their undisclosed curiosity and no sex education at schools or at home. Numerous reports point towards increasing number of child abuse reports in both rich and economically backward sections of our country.

Many people in India, consider STI as an ‘appearance from God,’ ‘an indication of developing youthfulness,’ ‘an indication of development,’ ‘the consequence of eating nettle leaves’ and ‘from sex with menstruating lady’. Not just in our country, such misleading thoughts regarding the causation of STIs are common throughout the world with shifting accentuation.

STIs are in general, more dynamic than other existing community infections. It is important to keep track of epidemiological changes in STIs especially in a densely populated country like India. A thorough understanding of the patterns of infections spread in a geographical region is important for planning its control strategies. Each year about 357 million STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis) are reported worldwide. As per the warning from the World Health Organization (WHO), antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhea is emerging strongly while cases of untreated chlamydia and syphilis with reported antibiotic resistance are also making the news. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) is defined as resistance to at least ≥3 antimicrobial categories which are used earlier successfully. The gonococcus mutates rapidly and acquiring resistance even against new classes of antibiotics. Chlamydia is the world’s most common non-viral STI and gonorrhea is the second most common MDR infection. Gonorrhea might have existed since ages but its authentic records in India can only be found during and after the British Empire in India. It was referred to as “clap” disease before the actual cause was discovered and is caused by the obligate pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae which infect only humans. Chlamydia and syphilis are caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and Treponema palladium respectively.

Researchers in India have isolated around 124 strains of gonorrhea from Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, and Secunderabad for testing antimicrobial susceptibility. As per their results, 98% isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin, 52% to penicillin, 56% to tetracycline and 5% to azithromycin. Irrational use of antibiotics, gradual accumulation of antibiotics in the food chain, innate antimicrobial resistance and development of resistance due to mutation were major culprits for developing resistance. MDR in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a big public health challenge.

Peoples, who have chlamydia, are more susceptible to gonorrhea and syphilis. These infections do not spread by shaking hands or toilet seats. The bacteria that cause syphilis can enter the body through a cut in the skin or through contact with a partner’s syphilis sore. It can also be passed from mother to newborn as the baby passes through the infected birth canal.

The incubation period, the time from exposure to the bacteria until symptoms develop depends on the sex of the patient, age and immune status of the infected person. In the case of gonorrhea, it is usually several hours to 4-5 days in males while in women it takes much longer and ranges from 7 to 14 days. In younger people, it proceeds rapidly, and its incubation period is also very brief. In older patients, sometimes infection is asymptomatic, progress to become chronic and eventually evident after a few months. In case the infected person was taking antibiotics for other medical ailments, its incubation period may extend further. In chlamydia, the incubation period is one to three weeks while in syphilis it is 21 days but can range from 10 to 90 days.

Infection and symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea are common which makes it difficult to distinguish these from each other. In comparison to men, women are around five times more prone to have asymptomatic urogenital infections. This infection can spread throughout the body, and affect joints, heart valves or other vital organs which can be deadly.

Symptoms of syphilis include 3 stages. In the primary stage of syphilis, it first appears as a painless chancre which goes away without treatment in 3-6 weeks. If it is not treated, the second stage begins as the chancre is healing or several weeks after the chancre has disappeared, when a rash may appear. The rash usually appears on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands, flat warts may be seen on the vulva. Some patients may exhibit flu-like symptoms. The rash and other symptoms may go away in a few weeks or months, but that does not mean the infection is gone. It still exists and referred to as the latent stage of its infection.

Unlike testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, routine screening for syphilis is not recommended for women who are not pregnant. Diagnosis of these is cumbersome and time-consuming. Also, one may be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea at a time as these two often occur together. Oral medicines and injectable antibiotics are prescribed in general to the patient and his/her partner to kill the infection and prevent its spread.

Similarly, in 2017 the Singapore Health Ministry started to focus on the quality of care. Healthcare system in India pays the provider for the quantity of care, not for quality care and has not initiated any policies with regards to the increase in quality of care.

Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, Managing Director, and CEO of ICICI Lombard in a recent press release about Indian government increasing GDP for healthcare to 2.5 said, it is a good move and this spending can be used to initiate quality programs. To measure the quality of care, the government should implement Quality metric tools in the major areas of medical error namely, reduce medication and hospital-acquired infection.

The quality metric tool will help the Indian Health Ministry to assess whether the provider has delivered high-quality care. For example, to assess whether a hospital has delivered high-quality care in prescribing medication to the patient with upper respiratory tract infection, the provider should report how many patients are being prescribed with proper antibiotics – for how many days.

Suppose the first year if the provider proves that 100 patients were prescribed with proper antibiotics then the number of patients should increase to 10% each year and finally achieve 100% goal in the consecutive year. The government should reward the provider with the incentive for providing evidence of high-quality care. Once two major medical errors have been addressed and controlled, the government can use the same model to all the areas of medical error. Hence, this incentive program will eventually increase the quality of care and decrease the cost of healthcare. This incentive program should be initiated first in government hospitals, profit hospitals, and physician group practice. This will further attract more medical tourist to India due to the high quality of care.

Introduction

In the 21st century, we are all connected. Population growth, mass urbanization, deforestation, climate change and increased travel have dramatically increased the risk that familiar diseases will spread and mutate, and new ones will emerge. As people enter new spheres of biodiversity, they come in closer contact with other species, increasing the risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans, and then spreading more widely.

It all sounds scaring, but it is stark reality facts on the ground which are almost ready for such a grim situation if corrective measures are not affecting in time.

She is not a wizard in crystal grazing to forecast future events, but certainly, she is a visionary and envisions that the spectre of diseases will loom over the planet earth in future. She is no one else but Janet Tobia who has won laurels for her documentary ”Unseen Enemy”.

The Emmy award-winning filmmaker Janet Tobia told InnoHEALTH Magazine that her movie Unseen Enemy examines why in the 21st century we are experiencing a rash of diseases that were once only outbreaks but have now become full-blown epidemics.

This year, the world recalls nightmarish memories of 1918 pandemic of influenza and screen through a popular movie “Unknown Enemy” on its first anniversary. “I had a little bird, its name was Enza, I opened the window, and in–flu-enza, was a popular rhyme for children while skipping ropes in those outrageous days.

Informatively, the 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic. Researchers say it infected 500 million people around the world, including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic, and resulted in the death of 50 to 100 million (three to five percent of the world’s population).

Disease had a greatly limited life expectancy in the early 20th century. Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast, the 1918 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. There are several possible explanations for the high mortality rate of the 1918 influenza pandemic. Some research suggests that the specific variant of the virus had an unusually aggressive nature. One group of researchers recovered the virus from the bodies of frozen victims and found that the transinfection in animals caused a rapid progressive respiratory failure and death through a cytokine storm (overreaction of body’s immune system).

More recent investigations, mainly based on original medical reports from the period of the pandemic, found that the viral infection itself was not more aggressive than any previous influenza. But that the special circumstances (malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, poor hygiene, etc.) promoted bacterial superinfection that killed most of the victims typically after a somewhat prolonged deathbed.

To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in France, Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. Examining the recent epidemics of Ebola, Influenza and Zika; unseen enemy makes it clear that epidemics bring out the best and worst of human behaviour, and that their effect goes far beyond the terrible tolls of sickness and death.

‘‘We are all connected to any person, animal, and insect that may have an infectious disease incubating in them. And that connection is either incredibly dangerous or a powerful force for good. It is our choice which of those becomes true.’’

She says political leaders all over the world should address the problem. And play a key role in combating pandemics threats. There must be early detection and warning systems in place to detect outbreaks faster. Countries must work in close rapport both in the field of vaccines and drugs distribution, availability of diagnostic tools and research work in the discipline. Leaders will have to chip in together. Make strong health architecture at a global level – as a threat is looming on everyone.

We also need to use new mobile technology to reach out to affected and vulnerable populations, mobilize healthcare and make long-term investments in scientific research.

Finally, it is critical to invest in flu research both to improve the effectiveness of the current vaccine. And, more importantly, to develop a universal flu vaccine – one that would work against all types of flu, including potentially a new pandemic strain.

She recalls that the 1918 influenza pandemic killed more than 50 million people around the world. In India alone, 17 million lost their lives and so her movie cameras rivet around a potential global scenario. Emerging epidemics have a propensity to burst anywhere and anytime because of the fast changing global environment.

She visualizes a scenario where India can play a major role because of its expertise in carrying out past massive health care programmes. Smallpox eradication and polio vaccination programme vindicate the fact about country’s efficacy to turntables. It is the need of the hour that such an expert was implemented for the elimination of infectious diseases to stave off the threat of the outbreak of pandemics in the global village.

In addition to urbanization and living in a highly connected world, deforestation is leading to closer contact with animals, which may infect us with deadly viruses. With climate change, vectors like mosquitoes are moving up north into newer regions. Suppose, antimicrobial resistance is added to this mix, and then there will be a new virus and drug-resistant infections. If we don’t have antibiotics that work, then you would be infected and untreatable.

The Director of the film minces no words to articulate her views on the unseen enemy. Ebola, for example, may have emerged in West Africa, a new part of Africa, because of deforestation there. AIDS moved out of the forests of Africa to spread around the world. Today there are over 20 million people living with HIV-AIDS. In addition to the new virus, we now also have new drug-resistant strains of once badly feared tuberculosis and malaria developing.

She says reports are in circulation that new strains of influenza are infecting birds in China. But the day might not be far away. When these microbes may learn the clandestine art of migrating from birds to human beings.

In populous countries, people live in dense pockets in the overburdened urban swathes. Not only that they travel in crowded public transports and if an infected, suffering from a contagious infection, sneezes or coughs, there is an instant spreading of the infection. The virus, the unseen enemy, infects people who are generally oblivious of the lurking threat.

During the outbreak of such epidemics, people are advising to be cautious to mount their own defence to protect themselves. In India, a sea of humanity moves every day from one place to another. And in case of the outbreak of such diseases, travelling of infection can be very fast.

In case of India, there is a heavy burden of noncommunicable diseases and chronic diseases that often compromise immunity. Deaths from flu are higher in diabetics than the general population.

The seasonal flu shot is the best tool. There is some evidence to show that taking the flu shot two years in a row gives you more protection than if you skipped a year. There is also some evidence on how people receiving a flu shot for the first time. And have the strongest immune protection reaction, while other studies say this isn’t true.

India’s smallpox eradication campaign is the most successful healthcare drive in history. During the time more than 100,000 health workers visited over 100 million households to eradicate smallpox. So, India has a blueprint to deal with a future pandemic.

Filmmakers had looked at previous epidemics and infections. AIDS was lurking in their minds. But the sudden spurt of Ebola and Zika virus’ cases turned the film into a real-time saga. And both AIDS and SARS slipped into the background.

In the global village narrative, every citizen is open to risk factors in case of pandemics. The diseases assail everything whatever comes into their way – may it be health or wealth. When a pandemic happens, people don’t work, economies collapse, and the even social fabric is dismembered. People attempt to avoid their own infected close relatives and friends. Out of fear that they will be the next seizure if precautions were not clamped.

In case of pandemics, whatever happens on the front line in Liberia affects people in Europe and North America. We all share knowledge platforms, travel frequently and export and import cheaper goods so microbes also travel freely. For her, Ebola is the test case. According to the Director, Ebola was not handled swiftly at the stage of the outbreak. Otherwise, it could have been bridled at that stage rather it turned into the epidemic.

She recalls that Zika virus too had sprung a surprise. It was never visualized. No one thought that a virus first identified in the 1940s in Uganda would travel halfway across the world. First to the South Pacific and then to South America, and now to North America. We are still trying to understand, why this virus that particularly dangerous would in Brazil produce such terrible birth defects.

Zika is essentially a pandemic as it affects so many countries and continents. It could affect more because the mosquitoes will be able to move further north as the globe warms up.
