Press Release: InnoHEALTH 2019 | Unmet Needs in Healthcare – Leading to Innovation

While winter started knocking the doors of North India, the vibrant city of New Delhi observing a gradual plunge in its morning temperature was witnessing one of the most remarkable events of the year where eminent thought leaders shared their astounding ideologies on innovations in healthcare.

The inaugural session was addressed by Dr. V K Singh, Managing Director, InnovatioCuris Pvt. Ltd., who set the tone for the conference by raising the genuine questions as how one can create healthcare delivery at optimum costs. He emphasized on working with grassroot innovators. In his speech, he also warned the young innovators to trust the technology only up to a limit.

Our guest of honor, Lt General (Dr.) Rajesh Pant, National Cyber Security Coordinator,Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India, in his special address quoted Mark Twain’s quote, “Gutenberg’s invention created heaven, and along with it a new hell”. He related this saying by how it applies equally to technology. As the technology has given us new horizons and ways to live, it has alongside created problems too.

Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque, UNICEF India Representative in her introductory address, gave a brief overview on the how unmet needs, especially in health sector become the mother of innovations and how technology can be a solution to address those innovations. She insisted on the use of scalable technology as to how it can be made accessible to millions of people. Referring to this, she talked about the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The world has resolved to leave no one behind in fighting extreme poverty and preventable child deaths.

Mr. Karnal Singh, Ex-Enforcement Director, India raised during his speech Narayana Murthy’s concern that there have been no recent innovations from India. “Are we so bad?” He said we would have to think differently for finding solutions. The education which we receive in our country is more competitive than collaborative.There are many unmet needs in health sector, for example, for majority of injections, cold chain is not maintained. It’s been a long time that we could have insulin tablets rather having the existing insulin injections. India, prominently being an agricultural land faces a major unmet need of water requirement, which is only 50% against the 80% requirement. He acknowledged that 2010-2020 has been the decade of innovations for India. To everybody’s pride, the ranking of India in the global innovation index has improved by five places to 52nd in 2019 from 57th position last year.

Sachin Gaur, Director Operations, InnovatioCuris, took the opportunity to drive everybody’s attention towards the trust deficit which persists in medical community and equity of stakeholders. He insisted on developing a common language within the medical fraternity to which Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a probable answer.

The forum manifested remarkable heterogeneity with its speakers from various realms across the globe. The second session on “Innovations for hospitals and insurance companies” was very interestingly structured as a free-style discussion.

Mr. Mohan Krishnan introduced the discussion with a brief presentation on the global trends in healthcare and their affordability. He particularly emphasized on access to healthcare resources and quantity shortage in India. He highlighted how lifestyle associated diseases have taken over the communicable diseases. He discussed the key trends in supply dynamics, their relationship to healthcare sector, and the challenges and opportunities for their future implementation. The functional and central aspect of this session was majorly about healthcare which is accessible and affordable to the masses. Other key points that emerged during the session are outlined as:

switching of communicable to non-communicable lifestyle associated diseases
lack of medical care in rural areas
Ayushman Bharat Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or National Health Protection Scheme: one of the largest and promising healthcare initiatives which aims to address healthcare holistically
patient feedback must be a pre-requisite while thinking of the innovations which can fulfill the unmet needs
biggest challenge in healthcare is information symmetry
one of the most remarkable point that came up was that the healthcare provider should be “paid to prevent”, and not paid to cure
5 P’s should be prioritized: People, Plant (equipment in hospitals), Processes, Premises, Patient care

This enlightening session focused on four most important factors, viz., better health outcome, better patient experience, better staff experience and better costs.

There are schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, which give accessibility to each one. The innovations could be patient centric, healthcare centric or in terms of sustainability. The focus was on trends impacting medical devices and diagnostics, for example, lab-on-chip, wearable health monitoring devices, AI, 3D printing, etc.

The brainstorming session provided meaningful insights into the remedies which innovations can bring to the unmet needs in healthcare. Prime Minister’s health and wellness program were much talked about. Challenges in the not-much-explored area of management of blood banks were discussed. The lack of a centralized system of blood banking is a major concern.

The role of medical robotics, which is a type of disruptive technology, is very fascinating. The thought of switching from open surgery to key-hole-surgery to no-hole surgery is in fact very intruding. Another major concern across the globe is diabetes and how the diabetologists across the nation are ignorant in not examining the feet of their diabetic patients as 30% of the diabetics suffer from severe foot diseases. There are ample cases of diabetic amputation, which must raise an alarm within the diabetologists.e lab-on-chip, wearable health monitoring devices, AI, 3D printing, etc.

The fourth session was a very inspirational one wherein the dais had seven women innovators, each one unique in their own fields. As Prime Minister Modi once said, “The progress of humanity is incomplete without the empowerment of women.
”InnovateHER gave a common platform to few wonderful women where they shared their stories of inspiration, falls, and experience. This session was indeed a beautiful stretch of one hour where these women from varied backgrounds and aspirations showcased their expertise and their words gave hope, path and motivation to everybody present in the auditorium. They were an epitome of women empowerment and proved it greatly “Komal Hai Kamzor Nahi Tu, Shakti Ka Naam Hi Naari Hai, Jag Ko Jeevan Dene Wali, Maut Bhi Tujhse Haari Hai”.

Ms. Shriya Sethi, presented detailed statistical data on women entrepreneurs, about emerging trends in healthcare innovations, the existing lacunae and the current scenario of general well-being of people.

Ms. Priya Prakash, Founder & CEO, HealthSetGo, was one of the youngest innovators, who herself realized at a very tender age, the importance of good health. This drove her to initiate her existing foundation, which focuses on the wellness of children. “If the kids are healthy in the first place, the coming young generation would be disease-free”, was her take on the evolution of her organization.

Another eminent panelist Ms. Preeti Rao, Founder & CEO, Weljii, inspired everybody around to focus on being healthy. Instead of talking about the illness, she emphasized more on how people must take care of their wellness which includes both physical and mental health.

Ms. Veena Sehgal, a pharmacist and entrepreneur mentioned the gap in the availability of medicines which the doctor prescribes. They are most of the times available on area-specific basis which makes it difficult and time consuming for the patients. There should be an emphasis on generic medicines, rather than brands.

Amidst such tech gathering which had brought together so many thought leaders and experts alike; we had between us few young innovators. These innovators with their priceless ideas and vision delivered their pitches to make their candidature remarkable in its unique way.

The candidates included Priya Prakash (HealthSetGo), Yogesh M (Hybrid effluent water system technology), Saiprasad Poyarekar (spray-on skin tissue), Ashish Sharma (Drip monitoring system) and Vijay Kumar Kumawat (Microporous implants). With their unique set of products/services, the candidates made it difficult for the jury to decide on the winners. Saiprasad with his technological advancement of spray-on skin tissues to get rid of minor-to-severe burns grabbed him the award for best innovator pitch. He was followed by Vijay Kumar, as 1st runner-up and Priya Prakash as 2nd runner-up.

The next session was a special one dedicated to diabetes, one of the most worrisome chronic diseases across the globe. The speakers talked about how to monitor, control and manage the disease.

Dr. Arjun Dang, CEO, Dr. Dangs Lab, who was chairing the session referred India as the “diabetic capital of the world”, referring to the alarming scenario of the affected Indians wherein around 16 million Indians are affected with Type 2 diabetes, and this number is expected to rise to more than 100 million in the next ten years. He also insisted not to commoditize healthcare, rather consider it as a service which requires a lot of compassion and empathy.

One very relevant question that came up was that “Why Indians are most prone to diabetes?”. Probably it is because of the harmful oils and highly processed foods available in the Indian markets. Stress is a huge component in diabetes management. Exercise and breath-management (pranayama, etc.) have a major impact on diabetes management. One of the major contributors of diabetes is non-nutritional food. Sleep which is often understated has a direct impact on blood sugar level which increases due to lack of proper sleep. Diabetic patients can improve only to fall back again into the same pit and destroy their health, hence it is of utmost importance to rescue them.

Among the highlights of the next session, “India Global Collaboration in Health Sector: Start-up Opportunities and Challenges” were the long-term Australia-India collaboration goals in the field of Science and Technology. To seek the answer to the question, “What can India offer to countries in the panel and what do the countries have to offer for India?”, let’s read next.

Dr. Jukka Holappa, Commercial Counselor, Country Manager India at Business Finland, shared the current status of healthcare in Finland. He spoke about the excellent condition of R&D in Finland, among which ten large companies are Indian.

Dr. Shiban Ganju, shared that he has come to India because India is “where all the action is happening right now”. He talked about traditional medicines in India, differential pricing of products across various countries. The innovators must focus on “frugal innovation”, for providing the best of healthcare.

Ms. Sharda Balaji, a lawyer by profession highlighted the importance of mobile penetration which is the largest in the world in India. There have been tectonic shifts happening in technology. She discussed how India is all about affordability and value consciousness. The concept of “jugaad” or making things doable work well in India. This is where a lawyer is needed to license the product(s). The major challenge she mentioned in India is lack of connectivity with deep science and research across geographical locations within the country due to its enormous size.

Much was talked on the existence and emergence of the digital health in the intriguing session on “Digital Health: Giving Birth to New Delivery Models through Mobile, IoT, Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence”.

Mr. Jacky Ovadia, General Manager, IDEA (International Innovation & Business Development expert), Israel shared with the audience his viewpoint on advancement in telemedicine. There must be portable medicine devices which can effectively check pulse and nerves very easily. He mentioned about remote monitoring for ultrasound, pregnancy, pulse checking, and clinically approved digital urinalysis. He said that a concept which uses GPS to monitor patients’ activities and habits can have varied impact on people’s lives.

Way forward

With such inspirational, informative and interactive sessions, the two-day conference came to an end, raising too many new questions and challenges that may impact healthcare, especially in India. It also gave answers to many existing issues through the numerous innovations that were presented. The generic thought which probably each one had was on the affordability and accessibility of good healthcare. If the innovations are not scalable, easily accessible and cost-effective to the masses, they cannot persist for long.

Of utmost importance were the views on how AI can save lives, and the importance of end-to-end affordable healthcare. IoT can connect to anyone, anytime, anywhere in rural and urban areas where reach is low, and how AI helps in diagnosis and innovation. Early intervention can resolve health problems and there is a huge scope in the use of the apps which can enable timely and real time intervention. With highly potential schemes like Ayushman Bharat, we can create value chain in affordable and accessible healthcare for everyone.

The healthcare sector sees immense opportunities with the innovations happening across the globe. Innovation pitches from global and Indian companies that were conducted wherein organizations from various sectors came forward to present their portfolio of services and products.

Innovators and researchers are working on various aspects wherein they can target various chronic as well as lifestyle associated diseases. For example, the Nano 4 TB kit helps detect TB easily. There are various state-of-art laboratories across the nation which are deployed and use high-end technology, for example next generation sequencing is used to perform operations to detect aneuploidy or any kind of anomaly which is responsible for spontaneous miscarriages and mental retardation in live born babies. In the light of technology, innovation and healthcare, we must look at technology with a business view; how technologies work in society, sustainability of the model with traditional delivery, and about new models in healthcare.

Another area of interest throughout the InnoHEALTH 2018 conference was the Advances in Diagnostics. As one hand it brings the top industry leaders sharing their vision, where the sector is moving, on the other hand, the most promising startups and technologies. It provided a soft landing space where the top leaders were able to provide a pathway for the best ideas to be supported and overall improving the state of the health sector in the country.

The panel represents various industry working in cutting-edge research in radiology and diagnostics areas from India and Sweden.

(Hony) Brigadier Dr Arvind Lal with his keynote address described that only 10% of overall healthcare constituents diagnosis.He discussed the emerging trends in Diagnostics by putting forward four questions

What is happening in healthcare?
How will that affect us as pathologists?
What are the emerging technologies?
What can you do to better prepare yourself?

Many trends relate to technological advances & the necessity to increase quality & efficiency. The new factor for the IVD industry, not previously seen, is the influence of educated & informed healthcare consumers. Clinical lab testing is one of the greatest bargains in healthcare but often draws the attention from cost-cutters. Lab professionals also will increasingly capitalize on these emerging opportunities & options.

The whole paradigm of healthcare is shifting and will continue to shift—from technological advances like electronic health records. This will change the historic doctor/patient relationship marking the onset of an era of patient empowerment in which the patient shall become more responsible for maintaining good health.

The Healthcare sector, in India, is at an inflection point and is poised for rapid growth At a CAGR of 21% – we will have an industry of 300 billion US $ by 2020. A combination of demographic and economic factors is expected to drive the growth of the sector.

Dr. Ravi Gaur wanted the healthcare facilities available in metro cities should reach the remote areas too, that’s where innovations in diagnosis should take us. Dr. Vidur Mahajan’s company validates clinical test with their expertise and team of researches.

“Simple solutions for complex problems” is the lateral thinking behind Pawan Asalapuram who is currently working on eradication of TB in the country by his innovations in diagnosis methods. Use of his product, PCR, TB can be recognized in just 90 mins which usually takes 3 to 6 months.

Dr. Richa Dayal suggested continuous monitoring devices. She then spoke on the data analysis part, where the study shows that India is researching on the data outsourced instead of self-published data as we lack in data. She demanded the support of policymakers in the area of diagnostics.

Mr. Anoop Shaji, final year undergraduate student He has delivered dozens of award-winning scientific presentations at various international, national scientific meets on his original novel, indigenously developed, potentially promising conceptual models. Anoop Shaji was the only dental student selected among 160 students all over India from all UG streams to be invited as a delegate to first ever Nobel prize series in connection to vibrant Gujarat 2017, which was presided by 9 Nobel laureates and the prime minister of India for conceptually developing a potential breakthrough for brain cancer treatment.

He became the voice of the young innovators in the conference and emphasized on POC (point of care) diagnosis. His current work is on a simple device detection of cancer with just one single drop of blood. Lab on the chip would be a boon in advancements in diagnostics and insisted on continuous efforts on it along with the financial and legal support.

InnoHEALTH is back with the third segment of “Young innovators award 2018”. The theme of this year’s conference is “Inspiring moonshots in healthcare”.

With this preamble, to celebrate and encourage innovation particularly in the healthcare sector, we sent out an invitation call to healthcare organizations and young healthcare innovators for nominations.

This quest asked to come up with an idea for an innovative product or service. These young innovators presented before the national and international gathering of more than 500 health experts including investors, policy makers, academia and industry from all over the world.

The following are the innovations that have been shortlisted to be presented at InnoHEALTH 2018’s “Young innovators award” session.

The first prize was bagged by the team which represented the excerpt of innovation in LIFEBOX by Deval Karia and Rohit S Nambiar. The second prize was bagged by Abhishek Venkataram and Sanidhya Rasiwasia for the innovation in surgical navigation system named NAVI. Dhananjay KVN who presented his innovation on voxel base analysis for pediatric brain mapping bagged the third prize. InnovatioCuris Pvt. Ltd sponsored the prize money worth 60,000 INR.

Current Technology and Scenario on Healthcare Innovations

Dr. V K Singh gave a brief overview of the current technology and scenario on healthcare innovations and delivery. He presented his idea of understanding the 3 ‘P’s i.e. pain, (of) patient, (of) provider to deliver Healthcare at optimum cost and as well as scaling up the availability of care.

Without taking much time, he addressed all the stakeholders and also identified the knowledge gap that still exists and recommended increased research to fill them up through holistic approach along with further action to encourage innovation in healthcare.

Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta, Visiting faculty, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Founder, Honey Bee Network, India gave the keynote address for the session and looked at the challenges in the areas of health. He acknowledged that, in recent times, there had been a growing awareness of health but said that more still needed to be done to allow further implementation of the necessary action. He then explained how, sharing and caring would result in good health, a significant integrated share and care approach should be adopted, thanks to the platform provided by InnoHEALTH 2018. This had enabled various stakeholders to come together. Questioned the gathering by asking them we (docs) only meet sick people, then how can we know what health is? He came up with an idea of conducting an event in which grandmothers who never visited the hospital. He was surprised by witnessing the number of grandmothers who did not visit hospitals in their lifetime. He observed that most people who live up to the age of 100 are women and unlikely to be the man. Spoke of how a healthy environment should be and considered Health as an ecosystem of both sick and healthy people.

He researched on the soil whether it had any impact on the health of a person since the cycle goes like
soil -> plant -> animal -> milk -> human

He also emphasized that there are many ways to make affordable healthcare which should be adopted in small scale at least if not on large scale. For example, a student uses iron fish in his curry which gives him 126g of iron. Surveyed and found 5 healthy states, the common thing in them was that the mothers were breastfeeding the child for 3 to 4 years and the vegetables consumed (edible wheat). Insisted on adopting alternatives for supplementation of health.

We are having 10,000 to 15,000 patients every day we have enough data too. Why aren’t we using the data? There was a need to raise awareness of the benefits of more data analytics in the healthcare sector. emphasized to Improve data analytics. Another area where development is required is in supply Chain – the challenge of innovation in healthcare, how do we connect the innovator and the user? On one side we have solutions and innovations but the scaling up foundations are less in numbers on the other side which creates the gap. Study of healthy people should be done. “Innovation comes with originality” – Prof. Gupta, He wanted the medical education system should be devised which will be helpful to all. Talked about the great scope of InnoHEALTH in this context as a platform for change. Ended the speech by throwing a question to all present there.“Innovations are coming up frequently but how to make it available to the world at large.

His excellency Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India, who was the Guest of honor, shared the healthcare experiences of Sweden. The healthcare delivery was very important in their election campaign. He expressed the concern of time taking cures for which they are looking forward to solutions. Mentioned the importance of prevention as the secret of healthcare lies in focus on prevention. The duo of government academia and the private sector should be encouraged for results in healthcare. Sweden has a separate council regulating the innovations named as National innovation council. The action plan in innovations -MOU was signed between Sweden and India. Showcased the country ranking among EU in global competitiveness and innovation.

Srijan Pal Singh CEO and Co-founder, APJ Abdul Kalam Centre – Special invitee, started with a short video about late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam to commemorate him and his work, showing his inspiring moonshots and contributions in the healthcare sector. Srijan explained that Dr. Kalam had been a strong person with a vision and a great motivator and original driving force behind the Dr. Abdul Kalam center. Shared a memorable incident encountered by him with late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in Kentucky, where Dr. Kalam was asked a question by a young student – “you have been in many positions like president, missile man, nuclear power, and many more as the list bigs.

Which of these gave you happiness or bliss of the above positions?
Dr. Kalam opted a hidden option that is option E.

In 1980, Mission AGNI was a tough task to achieve as the nose cone of the missile was a big challenge to design as there was a lot of heat as well as the pressure acting on it. They couldn’t use titanium also since the missile had to be very light in weight, then found a carbon-carbon composite which solved the purpose. One day his friend called from Hyderabad pleading his help for the children who were physically challenged and asked for a solution for their prosthetics. Kalam suggested why not make them a carbon-carbon composite prosthetics, which made the children very happy as the prosthetics were very light and they could now easily walk, run and didn’t feel the weight. The happiness in their faces made kalam sir happy. That gave him happiness by seeing the kids happy.

The message he wanted to is human compassion is strength and no joy can replace that.

He then suggested, Art + music + soft skills + medicine + healthcare should be taken into the mainframe, a holistic approach should be adopted in healthcare. He Started a non-profit organization named after the missile man to try achieving the vision which Dr. Kalam dreamt of.

Came up with a unique idea of collecting engineering solutions for the upcoming challenges. Illustrated how poor and remote area people aren’t getting proper drinking water by which around 3000 people die every year. Mission to get all the citizens free and clean drinking water have been started and the PIL will be filed on Oct 15th, 2018.

On a day of plunging temperature at Reykjavik airport in Iceland almost thirteen years ago, a few journalists, while briskly walking on the tarmac to embark on a special aircraft, were impatient to find out exact definition of Nanoparticles.

They were expecting this midair query from the scientist turned President APJ Kalam with whom they were flying on the state visit to a few nations including big bang experiment site at CERN laboratory on the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.

Dr. Kalam, during onboard freewheeling interactions with accompanying media contingent used to ask several simple questions while giving an elaborative narrative of complex scientific issues in common man language. His narration on Nanoparticles usage in health care discipline was always a gripping one.

Coincidently, on a day of soaring temperature in the same month 13 years after, another Scientist Dr. Amit Kumar Dinda was batting coolly on the subject in a lecture hall of Jamia Millia Islamia Central University in the national capital and was giving an absorbing narrative on Nanoparticles. His chronicle was equally informative and exciting.

For me, it was an instant revival of flashback memories of Nanoparticles and developments in India and Dr. Kalam’s vision of Nanoparticles researches and its usage in various disciplines.

The mega dissertation on the Nano theme by Dr. Dinda from AIIMS, New Delhi was equally engrossing. He was speaking at the Third IC (InnovatioCuris) meeting which had a talk regarding Nanotechnology and its commercial impact.

The talk highlighted the significance of Nanotechnology as a future driver of innovations and useful economy. He further exemplified with his own contributions to the field including nanoparticulate ambisomes against Kala-azar, nano formulation based HBV vaccine for oral delivery, nanoformulations against leishmaniasis.

The focus of the IC club meeting was about Biotechnology future innovation, Funding scenario and Start-ups. It was for the first time that the IC club meeting was organized in a university to encourage participation of academia.

Dr. Dinda has equally cautioned the pitfalls in Nano research and product development, which was very elucidative and useful for the present members and students. His experience with Nanoscience made him realise the importance of collaborative approach, as it is a highly inter-disciplinary science.

Nanotechnology is very liberative and robust in the sense that it offers low cost, and viable and scalable technology, the sort of which is need of the hour in India. Also given the reason that it has been practised in India in Ayurveda, gives a point of leveraging for existing vedic processes. The impacted areas range from health, environment, water purification, therapeutics, organ regeneration, to such hi-fi technologies like nanotised robots for vivo monitoring.

Dr. Dinda, also stressed on the importance of quality human resource and specially a dedicated one. He has given several examples of his experience abroad during his residency, where he was member of several failure commitees, and stressed on the importance of reasoning a failure.

The other talk in the meeting was given by Dr. Pavan from Scangene Labs, a first generation entrepreneur in the biotechnology domain with focus on low cost diagnostics. He shared his experience of establishing his start-up and his companies plan A and plan B. His team was instrumental in developing several panels for diagnosis of cancer markers and rare genetic disorders. They developed low cost equipment and devices for use in reserach setups and educational institutes.

Dr. Pavan have showcased their research into development of a low cost TB resistance screening devise and claimed to make it a less than one dollar possibility. They stressed the importance of having a plan A and plan B for survival in the Biotech Start-up landscape. They concluded saying India needs more PADMAN’s in Biotechnology.

The general mood of the meeting was regarding the buzz in the policy shift towards biological sector by the Government of India. Several important observations were shared by the clubites in this regard, like the present call for grand challenges focussed towards synthetic biology, the present heads of scientific bodies being decorated by emineries from biology background, etc. The other significant dialogue in the meeting was regarding focus on low cost technology, and the importance of quality certification and /or recognition by regulatory bodies.

After his post graduation in Pathology he did his PhD in the area of Cancer Biology at the same institute. His area of work includes Immunopathology, Inflammation and cell biology, Experimental pathology, Ultrastructural pathology, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine. In the area of Nanomedicine, he is actively involved in several projects related to nanoparticle-mediated drug delivery, antigen and DNA delivery system. Dr. Amit is working in the area of nano-cell biology to understand nanoparticle and cellular interaction. He is in the editorial committee of 12 national & international journals. He has worked as a Visiting Professor in Long Island Jews Medical Center & Elbert Einstein Medical College, New York, USA as well as University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Dr. Amit has published more than 200 research articles in indexed journals and edited 4 books. He has written 14 chapters in books and acquired 3 patents in the areas of nanotechnology and biopolymer.

The other interesting discussion was for the need of an ecosystem for development of tools and devices for Biotechnology.

Innovation is the New Buzz Word

Innovation has become a buzzword for every sector and similarly, the next buzz would be Hackathon, many without knowing the meaning of these words tend to use it to show their updated knowledge. My perception regarding health sector is to use innovation for reducing healthcare delivery cost keeping quality and benefit at the last mile and bottom of Pyramid. It is to provide the solution to the pain of patients and providers to streamline many processes. The use of technology to achieve this aim and to foster innovation is needed. AI, the blockchain, cyber security – technology terms – are in vogue to be spoken by many without understanding them.

The bringing out of Innovation does not need qualification, experience but idea and passion to do it. There are many success stories of such innovations where young school students have brought out miraculous innovations. These innovators need only hand-holding, mentorship and resources. The innovator need not be an entrepreneur as they exit many times for want of capital to scale-up.

The ecosystem created is best at present for innovators due to many initiatives placed by the Government. There is a need to put all the information in one booklet because the number of schemes from different ministries is available and many of these are not known to people in the arena of innovation. We have evolved in the last four years to greater heights because of constant endeavor from the government as well as our partners.

The idea of creating this magazine is sharing of experience of each other and providing a platform to publicize good work of innovators to the global community of 38,000 people with whom this electronic and print magazine is shared. We have published stories of grassroots innovators, InnoHEALTH executive editor Mr. Sachin Gaur traveled to Nagaland for two-weeks to find innovators in the interiors. This is a very interesting time for innovators who are ready to take the risk can only succeed.

I would like to urge all innovators to use knowledge platform created by us to disseminate and share information through international InnoHEALTH conference which also has young innovators’ award, B2B meetings, meet-ups, master classes, InnoHEALTH magazine, innovators’ club, webinars, training, and workshops, and planned study tours in 2019. These activities are under Pvt. Ltd. company InnovatioCuris (IC) means innovation in curing a Latin word which also has an extended arm that is not-for-profit called IC Foundation of Healthcare and Excellence (ICFHE).

Our journey is just three years old but has grown because of support of our ecosystem, partners and advisors. We would like to have regular feedback to make it better and achieve our vision of “Healthcare delivery to all at optimum cost with quality”. Handholding Innovative companies from EU for Indian Market Access: A day well spent in Bengaluru. Sachin Gaur spells out the details of the magical meeting between the two sides opening doors for a brighter and fruitful future.

InnovatioCuris, IC in partnership with NovoJuris and with support of Honorary Consul of Estonia in Bengaluru, Karnataka Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers’ Association, (KDPMA) organized the Bengaluru leg of InnoHEALTH conference followed by B2B meetings.

When in the planning stages of the delegation visit we were strongly advised by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India to include Bengaluru in our itinerary. As you know Bengaluru is probably the center of all the action in the country when it comes to biotech industry.

So, we looked at a stakeholder approach considering that many of the companies/delegates were to visit India for the first time. We realized that the main stakeholders for such a visit would be experts on Indian health sector, distribution channel experts, investors and legal experts.

Since, Estonia was our country partner we reached out to the Honorary Consul in Bengaluru who further connected us with KDPMA and other industry bodies. We, also, partnered with NovoJuris given their expertise in legal matters and strong interest in the health sector. The whole program was put together in partnership with a strong collaboration of the IC and the NovoJuris team.

The Bengaluru visit was planned for 21st of September 2017 with the first half of sessions with experts in the areas identified. The session about Indian health sector was delivered by Dr. V C Shanmugandan from Association of Private Hospitals of India and Ms. Swetha Suresh from Swissnex. The legal session was delivered by various experts of the NovoJuris team. The investor session saw experts from Accel Partners and PWC. The distribution session was run by officials of KDPMA, Mr. Sunil Attavar and Mr. Harish Jain.

Post lunch and evening sessions were reserved for the B2B meeting followed by cocktails, where various business leaders interested in partnering with the EU companies engaged the delegates. The EU delegation was very happy with the quality of the conference and the contacts made during the B2B sessions. It was a good learning experience for us as well to bring the stakeholders together and we gear up to do it again in 2018!

As India evolves from four-cosmo cities to a vast population coming under the modern cities the healthcare landscape evolves tremendously – discuss high profile panelists at the last session of the InnoHEALTH 2017

Opening the discussion, R. Rengarajan Iyengar of HCL Healthcare started very strongly saying, “The need of the hour is to get the authority of the public sector married with the energy and efficiency of the private sector. With changes in the demographics of the country, health care sector is growing into a very profitable sector as more and more cities are emerging as modern cities and expect only the very best in health and medical facilities.”

In support of his belief, he emphasized, “To achieve the above goals, we need to turn to innovative approach of things that may include new technology, newer processes and modern approach to processing and delivery of the best of the facilities. Concepts like telemedicine and cloud computing are also encouraging new players to enter as investors and at the same time luring corporates to invest in this sector.”

Sachin Gaur, took over as the moderator of the session and brought in his international exposure sharing his experience in the Scandinavian countries and opened the discussion with his view: “New Age requires New Solutions.”

Starting with Dr. Anjali Kaushik, he engaged the panelists with their thoughts on the subject.

“When you are handling large data sets, and that too, sensitive data like the details of patients, their illness; their personal details and their current medical status – there’s always a threat of cyber attack and we have recently seen in the case of UK’s NHS site being hacked and data was compromised. India is no exception to this as many hospitals have been subject to hacking leading to a freeze in the system where doctors could not treat patients without any access to their vital information. For this we have to induce digital hygiene and put systems in place to ensure that our dependency on digital platform doesn’t become a liability to the system,” said Dr Anjali Kaushik.

In contrast to the skeptical approach of Dr. Anjali, Sachin added that, “Hacking of data remains a grave concern for depending on that tool, but that’s only one aspect of it. There are, however, larger benefits of this holistic approach of using digitization with innovative tools. The way forward is for different players to gather their efforts and handle the challenge of collating quality and accurate data with a unified effort,” said Sachin.

“This is what I have witnessed during my trips abroad, especially in the Scandinavian countries where even the government contributes to gather data and process it suitably,” he concluded.

Dr. Sanjay Sharma, from Yostra labs and Vital Sense added, “We have made an effort to innovate in the field of scarcity and help in extending trained hands to help patients recover fast. There are always well-wishers with patients in the hospital, and they are close relatives of the patient who, we realized, can be utilized to help the patients recover fast and contribute to extending health care beyond doctors and medical staff. So, we initiated an innovative approach to train these well-wishers who contribute with total honesty and good intent to learn healthcare basics. The results have been amazing and have in fact contributed to relieving nurses who are over-worked and short staffed.”

Close to Delhi, the latest break through in the healthcare sector is Mohalla Clinics and Dr. Nimmi Rastogi, shared her thoughts on the concept as Health Advisor to the Government of Delhi. “Mohalla Clinic is a nofrills attached basic clinic to provide primary health services to people in the neighborhood. The facility has one doctor and four medical staff including a nurse and a compounder. It’s a prefabricated, air-conditioned facility in less than 100 sq yards with two rooms and basic facilities to store medicines and conduct essential tests.”

Elaborating on the facility, Dr Nimmi added, “The facility extends free facilities – free consultation, free medicines and 110 tests are conducted free of cost for anyone, irrespective if they belong to Delhi or not. Within the first year of its operations we are handling 80-100 patients a day using innovative tools and digital platform.”

Adding human element to innovations, Amit Bhatnagar of Accuster Technologies shared his personal and professional opinion on the subject and said, “When you talk of innovations, it must involve the people and not just development of technology. With such a large number of technically qualified manpower available to us, innovations without involving them are missing the bigger picture. Our journey of innovation is based on the fact that more than 85 crore people do not have access to diagnostic facilities as they live in rural areas. Our objective has been to develop technology that can be rugged enough to reach out to these rural grounds and help provide accurate diagnostics leading to better remedies.”

Deepak Mittal, concluded the session spelling out the mission of his company that has gone beyond technology and has extended healthcare by clever use of data in relation to the demographics.

“The mission of our company is to prevent and control diseases, improve quality of care and reduce cost of care. With the help of algorithms and artificial intelligence we can map the trends and predict unexpected ailment attacks with respect to the demographics of the region and population,” explained Deepak.

“For this our dependence on data is crucial and I must share that data in the healthcare sector is probably the worst data with no unified parameters on any filter. So the biggest challenge in executing our intentions with honesty and accuracy totally depends on acquiring and collating good quality data,” concluded Deepak.

“Telemedicine, as a business is a very lucrative platform. The gap between the resources and the users remains very high and in a country like India is not going to be easy to fill that. Telemedicine will be a very reliable option to bridge the gap and that makes it a very viable business option. But, like most business, telemedicine also has challenges that are very unique. Starting with, most start-ups end up replicating what is already there in the market “with improvisations”. What we need is new solutions and not improved solutions. You must think innovatively to innovate things.”

“It’s a huge problem and its problem that’s been prevalent for as long as the Clinical Trials themselves. But we often ask ourselves, ‘Do we know how big the problem is?’ And in all fairness, we didn’t know how big the problem is. Research Integrity can be questioned if the Clinical Trials have been unfair in the process and there have been papers that have been withdrawn by Canadian authorities that have been involving questionable practices – especially involving clinical trials.”

“We have learnt until now that human body is an amalgamation of cells, tissues and cells. Now, the human body has emerged as a conglomeration of biochemical process that are scattered around and work in close coordination with each other with the sole purpose of keeping the human body alive. Plants have been in existence for more than two billion years and our pharma is less than 200 years old.”

Digital health: Giving birth to new delivery models and fostering innovations

Innovations will remain the spine of modern health and medical facilities, but regulations, standardization will be the need of the hour as India strides towards improving health standards with innovations and innovative approach.

Initiating discussion on this topical subject, Sandipan Gangopadhyay of GalaxE from the US said, “E-Health is the need of the time and you need quality data to implement it. Collating data in a country with 1.3 billion people should not be a concern, but it’s a challenge. Once you gather data, the challenge shifts towards protection of data, exploitation of data and mismanagement of data. These are common challenges all over the world and will be faced in India more so due its complex demographics.”

Extending his keynote address on the subject, he added, “As we learn about solutions adopted in different countries, India should take advantage of that and adapt those solutions to avoid mistakes and complications associated with handling large data. Adhaar, the hottest thing in India, seems to be the most suitable solution for various things, including health and medical facilities.

“Simply identifying standardization isn’t the solution for enhancing the health and medical industry, but implementation of the same, with international partnership at the government and private/public sector will definitely induce transparency and invite every player to join hands and work together towards a healthy society.”

His inquisitive approach uncovered some very relevant and important notions on the subject. Kausik Bhattacharya from Johnson & Johnson highlighted the technological advantage at the corporate level as he spelled out the dependence on Cloud Technology. Explaining the term he said that “Cloud technology may not be new, but its disrupting the way things are happening or will happen in future in the field of health and medical facilities.”

Elaborating on the subject, he added that Cloud is giving rise to a completely new set of delivery models, which are trying to make it more agile or faster in terms of converting ideas into a product of service that will ultimately help the doctors, nurses and also the patients. The biggest advantage of cloud technology is its potential to implement scalability. Cloud technology can also help in connecting different technologies and evolve into complete solutions.

Marilia Cavaco, also from John & Johnson, highlighted other aspects of J&J that makes them one of the global leaders in the health sector.

“At Johnson & Johnson we touch over a billion lives on a daily basis with our products, medications and services. Since we touch so many lives it’s imperative for us to maintain safety and hygiene as the top concern in our operations. That being our ground standard, we have made investments into artificial intelligence and machine learning and have been getting very encouraging support from our partners at FDA in the US,“ said Ms. Cavaco.

Mr. Misra, asked some penetrating questions of Dr. Dayaprasad G Kulkarni regarding the ever-important subject of transparency. In response, Dr. Kulkarni said, “The current efforts of the government to digitalize India and services in India are contributing to inducing transparency and also democraticize and cut down on the seepage of sources, which is a huge problem in both private and public sectors. Next step is for us to engage in these facilities and platforms and take advantage of this transparency.”

“WHO’s Global Digital Health Index is another good tool to bring transparency at international level and will provide a standard platform of digitization. This is an index that looks at tracking, monitoring, evaluating and scoring the use of digital technology that will help bring all the players at one unified level.”

On the home front, Dr. Rahil Qamar Siddiqui, Founder of Eventus, brought to everyone’s attention that standardization is available in the country and how it’s helping to spell out the health policy and also keep the industry under control.

“There are EHR standards in India; it’s unfortunate though that not many in the industry know about it. In addition to the Bureau of Indian Standards the ministry is also involved in setting a lot of standards in India. Ministry of Health Holding (MOHH) has in fact published a document spelling out HER standards for India,” clarified Dr. Siddiqui.

“So there’s a standard for vendors to apply for even though there’s no accreditation body – yet. In fact, there are standards in various fields and segments of health sector that Government of India has compiled, to be used within India and opportunities like this (InnoHEALTH) help us to educate the public at large,” concluded Dr. Siddiqui.

“Health care is focusing only on hospitals, hospitals and only hospitals. However we do not have to limit our innovations to hospitals only. The corporate culture of hospitals today leaves lot more to be innovated in the hospital management and processes and I believe that innovations in this field will contribute to better health and much better health facilities for all.”

“According to World Health Organization’s 2010 data 285 million people are visually impaired; 90 percent of these are in the developing world; and 80 percent of these are preventable; And speaking of India, 70 percent of the population lives in rural areas, however 90 percent of the medical facilities are located in urban areas. So there’s a huge gap between the care providers and the population who they should be reaching.”

“If you are to work on remote distance technology, you can not work in isolation, You choose partners in technology, data procurement and delivery system. This means your dependence on your partners is even more critical as you depend on their credibility, technical compatibility and similar intentions. This is the reason that even though we have been talking about the digital health and e-health; but other than the fact that its been a buzzword for the last 15 years, it has not become a well charted module.”
