The healthcare industry is transforming itself according to the new world. A new world where population and disease continue to grow and technology can be the savior. Thus, the healthcare industry is transforming into a new version of healthcare upgraded with the latest technology and methods of treatments. For efficient results, the healthcare industry has to stay up to date with the latest trends that can be a lot helpful for developing better and effective healthcare. We are going to look over some trends that will drive the healthcare industry in 2020.
1. Artificial intelligence
In the haste of growing world population and disease, artificial intelligence offers better ways to identify disease, create appointment plans, better diagnoses, treatment methods, research accuracy, better report generating, better data management and many more. Artificial intelligence can save a lot of precious time. Artificial intelligence with the latest technology can improve the rate of conquering a clinical problem. Also, everyone is nowaday more attracted to healthcare that is more digitized. Artificial intelligence systems can help in decision making almost as good as a human does which makes artificial intelligence the most important trend for the healthcare industry in 2020.
2. Telemedicine

When we talk about time-saving, resource-saving and reach of the healthcare industry then this is the best way for healthcare to deal with such problems. Telemedicine allows the healthcare industry to provide its service by means of telecommunications technologies. By using telemedicine healthcare industry can reach their long-distance patients and can provide their services where the patient is comfortable most. Telemedicine involves services like consulting with doctors on call, taking appointments, regular health diagnoses on call and video conferences. This makes it easy for both doctors and their patients to stay connected and up to date with their reports and medical data. Telemedicine has increased from 0.38 million to 7 million since 2013.
3. Cloud computing
An increase in population makes it very hard for the healthcare industry to maintain and manage all the private and secure health-related information and data of all patients. Healthcare systems try to create systems to take care of this kind of data and its management. Here the cloud computing comes into play, cloud computing provides a secure method by which both patients and their related doctor and healthcare providers can access the information related to their case anytime anywhere with better-organized records and reports by using simple user credentials provided only to the patient and doctor. Cloud computing also makes sure that the data related to a patient is crash proof and cybersecurity. The healthcare industry tends to have a better experience with their patients and for that Integrating the healthcare system with cloud computing is best.
4. IoMT (Internet Of Medical Things).
90% of people want to wear or want to at least have a wearable device. The Internet of medical things is a new IoT developing rapidly and everyone wants to be connected and keep themselves updated with their health. Devices like watches and bands are working as health analytics tools, they are not just for calculating footsteps. Some new wearable devices can even calculate blood pressure and blood sugar calories and even heartbeat rate. Not just that they even can update the data collected to your doctor directly as real-time status. I can even connect you directly with your doctor if something is off balance with the help of IoMT. This is a trend that will grow every day in the healthcare industry.
Also Read: IoMT: Protection against cyber-threats
5. Extended Reality
You must be familiar with AR and VR technology. If not, then a simple definition for extended reality is a technology which allows you to combine real and virtual world environment. The best example for you to understand AR is pokemon go game which allows you to see virtual things in the real world through your smartphone but AR and VR are not for entertainment only. This technology can be used for the healthcare industry as VR allows doctors and students to work in an environment that is not available for them or is out of their reach.
It allows the practitioners to learn and view body parts and images without using any intrusive method. VR also saves a lot of money and makes diagnosis easy for patients. Extended reality is a revolutionary technology for the healthcare industry which makes it an important trend that will drive the healthcare industry in 2020.
6. 3D printing
3D printing is a process of printing a 3D model of digital design by using actual solid materials. Every innovation directly affects the healthcare industry, either by providing new methods of treating people or by improving previous ones. 3D printing has provided many new possibilities to the doctors and healthcare industry in many ways like creating 3D models of the organs allows the doctor to take a better look at the situation.
Also, 3D printing allows a doctor to make a better plan for the operation. It also helps the doctors in personalized Prosthetics. Doctors were even able to print living cells that can be used in patching damaged tissues with the new 3D printing technology. 3D printing can also help in minimizing theater time and increasing the possibilities of an operation to be successful by giving a better plan created using the 3D model. 3D printing can help in saving lives, Thus makes it a vital trend that will drive the healthcare industry in 2020.
7. Blockchain
The Blockchain technology is a unique and unignorable invention because of its properties. Blockchain technology was first used for cryptocurrencies only but now blockchain can be used for many grater things and areas. Blockchain is very helpful for the healthcare industry as it allows the data to be shared with many users immutably, which means data can be shared but can not be copied. Making the important data of patients ore secure as a patient can share the data like reports and details only with the healthcare providers and doctors. Blockchain works as a backbone of patient data security using cryptography of data, where “block” represents the important data of patients and “chain” represents the users and divided systems where the data can be accessed. This technology of sharing data without being copied makes blockchain a unique trend for healthcare in 2020.

Artificial Intelligence can help decode epileptic brains. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder affecting nearly 65 million people worldwide. The seizures or ‘fits’ as is commonly known, arise due to unusual electrical activity in the brain and is the chief symptom of epilepsy. Neither dependent on age or gender, the onset of the seizure is unpredictable without a set pattern of frequency of occurrence or severity, often posing a challenge to the caregiver.

Did you know that one student commits suicide every hour in India?

Although epilepsy can be related to previous brain injuries or genetic factors, neurologists have found unprovoked, recurrent seizures in healthy individuals too. How and why these seizures occur remains a mystery. However, research has found that the source of seizures is within the brain. In other words, the brain itself is the generator of epilepsy.

Spatial maps of top 10 networks: If the origin is within the brain, then are there any fingerprints that can be detected? Does the brain often tell-tale signs which can be mapped to predict the tendency of epilepsy?

Reason for Aggression After Drink

Seeking answers to these questions, a team of interdisciplinary researchers conducted a study to peep inside epileptic brains. The results indicate that there exist independent neural networks that can carry disease sensitive information about the anomaly. With the help of machine learning models and artificial intelligence, researchers were able to detect and reveal the hidden patterns.

“Epilepsy is not a disorder but the manifesting of something from within the brain’s electrical activity. Interestingly, each one of us has the neural map of epilepsy within our brain. It is only when the network gets fired and manifests externally, in a recurrent manner, it becomes disorder or epilepsy,” explained Dr. Tapan Kumar Gandhi, lead researcher of the study from Indian Institute of TechnologyDelhi, while speaking to India Science Wire.

The usual diagnosing tool for epilepsy is by EEG (Electroencephalography) readings of epileptic patterns and visible symptoms like convulsions, loss of consciousness or sensory disturbances.

Existing studies reveal specific patterns that represent synchronous activities of sensory, auditory, cognitive and other functions. These activities are indicated by the change in blood flow to the brain and seen as BOLD signals or changes in the Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent output.

Recent developments in Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI help picture these activities in the brain and detect the cause of seizures such as a lesion or scar. However, MRI is not very useful when a seizure flares up. Whereas, functional MRI — another scanning method — can record regional interactions in the brain when a particular task is being performed.

In 1995, Indian researchers had found that the brain shows prominent neural network connections even in its resting state. Termed as resting-state functional MRI or rsfMRI, the images from this scanning indicate neural patterns in an individual’s brain even when no action is performed.

In the present study, the team utilized rsfMRI technique and performed brain scans on individuals with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE), which is the most common form of epilepsy.

Dr. Gandhi said, “We hypothesized that there could be ‘disease-specific networks’ in epilepsy prone brain that can be identified with the help of the machine learning model.” Machine learning involves artificial intelligence to read live data instead of pre-programmed information. Such a building block of a machine is analogous to a neuron cell in the brain.

Researchers used a tool called Support Vector Machine (SVM) to deal with the complex and non-linear data obtained from the scans. By using another algorithm called Elastic-net based ranking, the relevant features of the neuroimaging data were extracted. The signals were integrated to reveal the patterns.

The team conducted a pilot study on 132 subjects – 42 with epilepsy, and the rest with healthy individuals. Parameters like age, gender, history of epilepsy, genetic predisposition, incidents of injuries, medications and more, were taken into account. The epilepsy patients underwent three rsfMRI while those in the healthy group were scanned once.

In all, 88 independent components or networks were obtained from the whole brain imaging data and fed as input to the SVM. From the patterns, top 10 strong networks were correlated with clinical features using another standard method called Pearson’s Correlation to generate the rsfMRI epileptic neural networks.

From the pattern inputs, the SVM could identify epileptic individuals to an accuracy of 97.5% and specific lobes in the brain responsible for the condition. The model also revealed correlations such as the age of onset, frequency of seizures, or duration of illness.

By this, researchers concluded that the independently derived rsfMRI contains epilepsy-related networks. ‘Our research establishes that with the help of machine learning methods, we can identify these networks, as we had hypothesized. Increased strength in these networks indicates the possibility of a progressing Temporal Lobe Epilepsy’, explained Dr.Gandhi.

The team included Rose Dawn Bharath, Sujas Bharadwaj, Sanjib Sinha, Kenchaiah Raghavendra, Ravindranadh C. Mundlamuri, Arivazhagan Arimappamagan, Malla Bhaskara Rao, Jamuna Rajeshwaran, Kandavel Thennarasu and Parthasarathy Satishchandra (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bengaluru); Tapan K. Gandhi and Jeetu Raj (IIT, Delhi); Rajanikant Panda (Universitè de Liège, Belgium); Ganne Chaitanya (Thomas Jefferson University, USA) and Kaushik K. Majumdar (Indian Statistical Institute, Bengaluru). The study results have been published in the journal European Radiology.

1. NovioSense – The device that can be kept in the eyes to monitor sugar levels

IEEE spectrum has discovered a recent study that seems promising for the Dutch startup Noviosense’s own wearable glucose monitor that measures tears by sitting in one’s lower eyelid. The result was close to 95%accuracy to the levels of glucose as recorded in blood. Therefore, the newly developed glucose monitor can be placed in the lower eye lid to measure glucose level in tears. It works by tapping into basal tears or a continuous stream of tears that do not require stimulation. The spring coil can rest in the eyelid for long periods and will not be displaced even if users’ rub their eyes.

Though the innovation seems to be another milestone in the management of diabetes which presently is painful, inconvenient or sometimes tedious but the study had a drawback. The sample size consisted of only six people. Noviosense will need to conduct more tests to further prove the device’s validity and reliability.

2. Sensors to detect milk adulteration

According to a recent research published in the Food Analytical Methods Journal, IIT Hyderabad has developed a sensor-chip based detector system to detect adulteration in milk. This helps to measure the pH levels of milk through an indicator paper that changes color due to acidity of the milk. Currently, methods like chromatography and spectroscopy are used to detect milk adulteration, which are quite expensive, so the researchers at IIT used a relatively cost-effective process called ‘electro spinning’ to produce halochromic paper-like material made of nano- sized nylon fibres and load edit with a combination of three dyes.

They have also developed algorithms that can be incorporated on the mobile phones to accurately detect the color change. The algorithm captured the colors of the sensor strips after dipping in milk using the mobile phone camera and the data was then transformed into pH ranges. On testing with milk spiked with various combinations of contaminants, they found near-perfect classification with accuracy of 99.71%.

In order to get comprehensive milk quality check systems that can be incorporated in mobile phones or any other hand aids the team now aims to study the effects of mobile phone cameras and lighting on detection efficiency and hopes to develop sensors for other physical properties like conductivity and refractive index and integrate them with the pH detection unit.

The UK-based Med Tech Startup Test Card has created a postcard- sized urine test that can be done at home and is very much similar to a pregnancy test, which is analyzed by an accompanying app to provide immediate results. The postcard has an embedded, pull-out urine test. The urine test has no electronic component involved in its usage. The postcard test is likely to be launched in the UK in April 2019. In the near future, TestCard also plans to screen diabetes products in India.

4. IOTA Bioscience creates body sensor smaller than sand grain

An American biotechnology Startup, Iota Biosciences founded in 2017 by Carmena and Michel Maharbiz has recently raised 15 million dollars for its in body sensor which is smaller than sand grain.

The University of California in a micro electrode research developed the sensors called ‘neural dust’ which then transfers the data wirelessly from inside the body. The Co-CEOs hold exclusive rights to neural dust technology which offers revolutionary therapeutic applications for various chronic health conditions from inflammation to motor disorders and eventually cognitive impairment.

The advantage of this small-sized sensor is that it uses ultrasound avoiding any danger that is associated with wire and battery-provided implants. Since they are smaller and can be implanted deeper into the human body than traditional ones available, neural dust can interfere directly with specific nerve clusters allowing more precise diagnostics and treatments. Iota’s devices can concurrently record information and stimulate nerves giving near instantaneous closed-loop therapies that could better treat diseases from the inside out.

But do we really know what these are? Should we really be bothered and aware how these can be changing the healthcare industry? To answer and brainstorm about such questions we all gathered on a beautiful Saturday morning on June 15, 2019 in one of India’s premier hospitals, Max super speciality hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

The rise of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence is critical to the digital transformation of modern healthcare as far as healthcare monitoring and delivery are concerned. The aim of patient and doctor communication is to create a good and caring relationship, facilitate exchange of information for accurate diagnosis and treatment, and including patients in decision making and counseling. But whether the doctors are able to create a caring relationship or whether the patients are satisfied with the care, is the point of concern With the evolving technology, can Artificial Intelligence empower healthcare and improve patient doctor communication? There can be endless possibilities in medical imaging and diagnostics, patient care, RnD and management.

One of the patient doctor communications medium is voice. Companies like Google and amazon are out with devices which are voice based and are betting heavily on voice based skills. As these companies are market movers, the question arises: Are we investing in making voice one of the skills needed to help the patients?

People with chronic conditions are often advised to follow detailed treatment plans; end-of-life care often requires many complex (and emotionally draining) decisions; options for treating certain diseases are increasing drastically. How much could health outcomes be improved with more effective communication between patients and healthcare providers?

One of the panelists brought light on how the voice is substantial to the patient doctor communication. Voice as an input is a useful tool as it gets us more data to refine our systems and algorithms. Voice as an output have some issues in the current scenario, as the synthesis is not real, it is hard to deploy the voice based system. Also there is a language barrier, as the systems are mostly deployed in English, there lacks trust and empathy. There is a vast opportunity to make these systems demographically viable. The question now arises is, if we use a chat bot or a bot service, can we have an authentication that it is a bot speaking not a human being.

Countries like Sweden have a white label application which helps the patient to communicate to the hospital or doctor by the help of a virtual appointment. This makes the environment conducive. In India, big hospitals like Max healthcare can also come up with the same system to improve the patient interaction with the hospital. Government can also come up with a plan to incentify the hospitals and doctors to use this kind of application.

As we are heading towards connected health, efficient communication between doctor and patient is just a small step towards faster healthcare delivery. The pace and evolving changes in the segment of healthcare extend right across the spectrum – from the development of new treatments and medicines to the front line delivery of innovative and paramount outpatient and emergency care. Surprisingly, it is at the front line where the most amazing advancements are happening and where the advantages are registering in the biggest volumes.

With this much advancement in connected health technology we have silos in the process. Healthcare providers apparatus needs to dismantle silos to usher in jointness communication between the doctor and patient. Can we leverage digital tech to manage patient life-cycle for convenience and safety? Max healthcare is also working on many measures to help the patient such as, billing transparency and estimation of the cost, bed allocation, risk assurance etc. Implication of all these is the journey/life-cycle of the patient improves. It gives a holistic care to the patients.

The core is to maximise value for patients: that is, achieving the best outcomes at the lowest cost. In this scenario the AI is helping the healthcare providers to move away from a supply-driven health care system organized around what physicians do and toward a patient-centered system organized around what patients need.

Growing demand for out-patient and at-home care along with connectivity advancements are also driving the use of devices powered by the IoT and AI. Today, privately-based medical insurers are making use of two-way smartphone applications for smartly connecting general practitioners with customers when it comes to initial consultation and diagnosis.

This serves as a cost-efficient option for avoiding a probably unnecessary in-person consultation for a minor ailment. The next steps ahead for this is to accurately and completely share vitals with medical practitioners on a real-time basis. This will be beneficial to enable multi-faceted tele-health services by making use of affordable devices for interfacing users together. It also proves useful for data transmission through connected devices like monitors, pacemakers, and other devices.

It is evident that the core of the connected health is made of technology, but we are not talking about just tools and devices here. This topic is relevant also from a philosophical, ethical and business point of view.

Government and private payer policies are shifting toward the use of connected health; We will likely see increasing adoption of connected health services by hospitals and providers as health care systems move towards holistic care to patients. It is the innovation and execution of information-based technologies that are likely to be transformative in improving health in a world of increasingly restrained resources. And in that effort, the newly empowered consumer is likely to lead the way.

This is a growing area of health care, and despite current challenges, presents significant opportunities for health care improvement. If you are not considering connected heath and Artificial intelligence in healthcare, now is the time!

The healthcare industry is continuously sprouting with the exponential evolution of technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and robotics, etc. These new areas of smart technology are expected to pose unswerving influence on the healthcare industry during the next couple of years.

Smart Health Technology is equipped to automatically obtain, store and compute health information from technically advanced sensors and offer personalized advice or automated actions from the collected data. This technology can interact and engage with data via Virtual or Augmented Reality to provide even more real-time experience for both, physicians and patients.

With the dissatisfaction among junior doctors reaching unprecedented levels (a staggering 80% feel excessively stressed) and the number of doctors progressing to specialty training dwindling to its lowest rate in the history of the National Health Service (NHS); these changes have never been more needed. In the event of NHS staff struggling to cope up with the growing demand for patient care, owing to the UK’s rising aging population, technology is seen as an enabler which will further propel healthcare professionals to work smarter, and not harder.

There are numerous opportunities for healthcare stakeholders/ manufacturers to innovate Smart Health Technology solutions, which are expected to streamline the precise medical care approach, e.g., telemedicine. However, there are also certain restraints in the regular healthcare system pertaining to infrastructure and adequate competencies to integrate Smart Health Technologies. Moreover, manufacturers and service providers need to ensure data security and adhere to global standards. Few of the latest applications of Smart Health Technology are Smart Apps, Smart Pills, Smart Syringes, Intelligent Fabrics, and Smart Wearable Devices.

Smart Apps

The global smartphone users’ count is expected to surpass 2.5 billion by 2019. This exponential base of users is expected to influence the fate of health and fitness apps, which have already increased by more than 30% since 2016 (as on current date). It is estimated that almost 75% of current active mobile users run their health and fitness apps at least twice a week. With increased awareness among the mass population, people are leveraging technology to take better control of their health conditions such as asthma, infertility, obesity, and diabetes, etc. Moreover, the plethora of user data churned out from these apps are helping the market researchers access unparalleled volume of data for further in-depth and precise insights.

Smart Pills

The smart pill technology includes a wireless capsule, a receiver, and the software, which investigates and categorizes the gathered information from the patient who consumes the pill. It is an emerging technology, which is witnessing an upsurge in demand and is expected to show significant potential in the diagnostics domain in the future. The technology is used to detect gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and offers the physicians with information relating to several parameters such as pH, temperature and GI tract pressure.

For instance, the first digital pill -Abilify MyCite (approved in November 2017 by the US Food and Drug Administration) is used to track patients’ medication data. This is a venture between Tokyo-based Otsuka and California-based Proteus Digital Health (digital medicine service provider). The other key players operating in the smart pill technologies market include Novartis AG, Given Imaging Ltd., Philips Healthcare, Smartpill Inc., Olympus Medical Technology, Medtronic, Pentax Medical Co., Siemens Healthineers, Stryker Corp., GE Healthcare, and Boston Scientific Corp.

Smart Wearables

Smart wearable medical devices are small electronic products (consisting of sensors) which have computational competence. These devices are entrenched into items, which are attached to different body parts of the user. They can resemble watches, eyeglasses, clothing, contact lenses, shoes, or even jewelry.

Few of the latest smart health monitoring wearables in the global market include:

Apple Watch Series 4 (healthcare app)

Pebble Health (health monitoring app)

Zephyr BioPatch (wireless monitoring device)

Muse headband (brain-sensing monitoring headband)

AliveCor Heart Monitor (smartphone-based ECG device)

Garmin Forerunner 935 (GPS-enabled heart rate monitoring device)

Precisely, the Apple Watch Series 4 is embedded with an ability to automatically inform hospital service providers if a user becomes immobile for a stipulated period of time. This device assists people to become healthier, simultaneously storing real-time data which can be analyzed by healthcare professionals via remote patient monitoring, ensuring more precise and perceptive data for better healthcare practices. Moreover, AI can continuously monitor healthcare data and transfer the same to hospitals when necessary.

It is a world of digital transformation with a large number of buzz words such as Innovation, Blockchain, AI, etc., spoken around within people on large. This is digital revolution where things change very rapidly with newer concepts, issues, challenges and solutions. One such major issue of digital world is Cybersecurity which relates to Ransomware, bitcoin, etc. Taking the cue, in the current issue of the magazine we intent to explore the trends, and challenges of Cybersecurity and address its need in the healthcare sector.

In a recent healthcare conference, the people were unaware when I spoke about how on October 21, 2013, the former US Vice President Dick Cheney’s doctors disabled his pacemaker’s wireless capabilities to thwart possible assassination attempts. To this, everyone had an issue on accountability. It remains unanswered that who would be liable, the doctor, hospital, company which provided pacemaker or the insurance company. Amidst all this, nobody was concerned about the patient as none present there questioned it. Maybe we are awaiting a major catastrophe to happen to put our minds to work. It is our endeavor to equip the healthcare community to this aspect of digital health.

Cybersecurity is a major concern for patient safety and healthcare infrastructure. The health records, data, hospital information system and individual medical devices are all targets. The vulnerability is in technology and lack of awareness of staff. There are many examples to quote wherein hospitals have become the victim of attacks. A recent audit of a corporate hospital in Delhi by our team revealed that 80% of equipment is vulnerable to cyber attack, thus, risking the patients. Healthcare providers are not sensitized to issue as required hence this magazine is dedicated to Cybersecurity. We have named it Cyber4Healthcare and even launched a training program in the healthcare domain to update knowledge of this extremely important topic. There is an immediate necessity that we invest in staff and equipment to make our systems robust enough to protect them from cyber-attacks.

We at InnovatioCuris always strive to sensitize the healthcare providers with new technologies and our next issue would focus on IoMT or connected healthcare which is overtaking the segment rapidly. However, we should always keep in mind that we are master of technologies and not the other way around. Can humane touch be replaced by technology? The trend nowadays is that we are leaving human ingenuity behind and are being heavily dependent on technology. There is a need to understand the benefits and challenges of newer devices, technology, and thinking. Let us consider how we can balance traditional to modern approach in today’s world and get the best of both worlds. Let our readers share their experiences by writing for the magazine to benefit all.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The Digital Information Security in Healthcare Act (‘DISHA’) is that firm first step taken by the Indian Government in the long journey to secure the healthcare data of patients in India. The question we need to ask ourselves is that Why DISHA is the need of the hour? Why do we need to safeguard the electronic health record in hospitals?

The draft of the act was made public in November 2017 by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The word ‘Disha’ means direction, the GoI has taken the first step in the direction of safeguarding the digital health record. For this InnovatioCuris has also taken the first step towards having a concrete discussion about ‘Challenges in the implementation and opportunities for making health sector DISHA and data protection ready’. There were panelists from various renowned government, private hospitals, and healthcare IT firms.

The first session was about the ‘Challenges in the implementation of DISHA’. The panelists were happy that InnovatioCuris has taken an initiative to critically discuss the challenges a hospital will face once the act becomes the law. All the panelists agreed that the act lacks various aspects. Few concerns that bother the clinicians are, that who will give the consent if the patient is unconscious.

The ambulances have the capability that it sends the health records from the ambulance to hospital before the patient reaches the hospital for doctors to study the emergency cases. In this scenario, what should be done if a patient denies the consent for sharing the data at a later stage? Should the clinical establishments discard the already shared health record or should they handover the same to the owner (in this case, patient) or what should be done. There are no set protocols defined in the act for such cases.

A question was put forward, does the patient has the authority to edit their health record, or can they view, who have seen their health record. A healthy discussion took place where we got to know that citizens of Estonia have chip cards, where one can see their health record and can also see the logs of who has accessed their health record. This made us realize, that India as a nation state can use Aadhar card as a mechanism, where we can log in into a portal and get to see health records.

The third challenge that came forward was interoperability of health records. As the record lies with the custodian, not the patient, editing and viewing of it can be done by the clinical establishments. The health record can be shared by the clinical establishments to another, but there is no standard on how to transfer it. Data integrity is a point of concern, which is not mentioned in the act.

One of the challenges that came into light was according to ‘Clinical Establishment Act Standards for Hospital[2]’ the hospital has to keep health information and statistics in respect of national programmes, notifiable diseases, and emergencies/disasters/epidemics and furnish the same to the district authorities in the prescribed formats and frequency. The question is what if the patient does not give consent. The proposed act should have a provision where the clinical establishments are liable to take the health data.

As we have unstructured healthcare facilities in India, the act should also empower the clinical establishments by various means to keep the data safe. As of now the DISHA is a proposed act, not a law and has lots of loopholes. It also lacks in many aspects discussed earlier. This is just a start and the government should take necessary steps to improve it.

The second panel discussed on ‘Opportunities for making health sector DISHA and data protection ready’. The panelist consisted of CIO of path labs, owners of healthcare IT firms, who shared relevant thoughts and comments. The panel started the discussion on why do we need the act and what are the benefits of the act. Panelist were grateful to the government to bring the act. They told that the clinical establishments will take steps to increase the safety of the health record.

The gaps in the technology for generation, storage and transmission will be lowered down. Sectors such as banking, financing and insurance have structured their data, but this lacks in healthcare. Detailed scope of security features are missing from the act, this would help the companies to design the software from the ground up by using security as an important consideration.

The imminent threat is in the software which are already in place and have not been patched or the system has not been upgraded. The good news is that many have an audit trail in built in their system, which track any CRUD(creation, read, update, delete) of the records. The discussion contributed a fruitful thought: Data at rest is not encrypted. The question that arises is what is preventing the healthcare IT companies to encrypt the data at rest.

One of the challenge in the DISHA is that, the owner of the data must be informed of any breach of the privacy or confidentiality of their digital health record within three days. But according to IBM report it takes on an average of 197 days to detect a breach[1]. How can the Healthcare IT companies safeguard the health record and let the owner know about the breach. The solution is to encrypt the tables in the database, but that might hamper the performance.

It is a huge opportunity for the stakeholder to bring standards in the act. DISHA might have only completed its first round of comments from the public and stakeholders, it can be expected that the revisions made based on the feedback will churn out a more refined version of the act. In any case, it is evident from the draft that the government has really pushed to provide additional security, privacy and confidentiality for individuals, with respect to their digital health record.

Digital is about user interactions and experience powered by Technology. Digital in Healthcare is empowering us to reduce cost, increase quality and enable wellness! – Sumit Puri. Emphasized on the utilization of Data from multiple sources like customer experience, patient safety, cost, and operational efficiency and growth to provide insights. He shared his plans on leveraging IoT at Max Healthcare through Connected, Coordinated and Integrated ecosystem with the focus on the patient. Proposed a dedicated, 24×7, technology-enabled clinician monitoring cell, digitized remote patient monitoring during emergency ambulance transfer. MAX BIKE RESPONDERTM for immediate medical care during emergencies 13 mins each time, >150 lives saved since June’17.

The learnings from his keynote were
● Standardization of core systems
● An adaptive and iterative culture of Innovation
● Outside in patient-centric design
● Collaborative ecosystem
● Strong governance mechanisms with metrics
● Focus on user (Clinician) adoption

As we know digital has struggled to make a headway into Indian health sector in a big way so far. However, given the enabling building blocks, it seems that we are at the cusp of a new paradigm in the health sector. In this session, panelists discussed the topic of digital in three contexts, as we have representation from policymakers, IT experts, Hospitals to an insurance marketplace.
