I picked this book from a linkedin recommendation by a person who was in the jury of the Financial Times awards for the best business book 2025. This book was judged to be the winner of 2025.

I am familiar with the AI space and also the company Nvidia, even having the opportunity to chat with Jensen Huang once in Stockholm. In spite of working in this domain for the last 8 odd years, the book opened to me so much trivia and details that I was not aware of previously.

My favourite anecdote was of the Norwegian researcher Fredrik Dahl, who created the first neural network that could beat a human at the game of backgammon. The software was also commercially successful. Fredrik did this in 1994, which is almost 30 years before this AI era as we know it. This led me to sharing this story with my Norwegian friends and having some indirect conversations with Fredrik, who is still researching AI topics in Oslo.

The author has done a meticulous job of interviewing a great many people and bringing about the nuance to share the story of one of the greatest companies of our time. He brings multiple views and also provides without much technical jargon for a lay person to understand the complexity of technology that is changing the world as we speak.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is linked with the field of AI or even a user of AI. As this technology is the most fundamental technology of our times and this book provides a unique perspective from the mind of builders who have contributed one of the main vehicles (chip) for this revolution to happen!

Exploring the Landscape of India’s Pharmaceutical Industry

The pharmaceutical industry in India is poised for a remarkable transformation, with the potential to achieve an estimated $120-$130 billion in revenue by 2030. This growth requires a focus on speed, safety, and scalability. A recent session titled “Pharma Future: Speed, Safety & Scalability” brought together industry experts to discuss the current landscape and future prospects of the pharmaceutical sector in India. Moderated by Dr. Rajeev Sharma, VP of Medical Affairs at TATA 1mg, the session featured insights from a diverse panel of speakers.

The Need for Innovation and Digital Transformation

Dr. Rajeev Sharma opened the session by emphasizing the importance of not just being the “generic capital of the world,” but also fostering research and innovation. He highlighted the need for India to embrace digital ecosystems and regulatory frameworks to facilitate growth. This sentiment was echoed by Ms. Meenal Bhat, CEO & Director of Kraftland Consults, who spoke about the significance of adapting to the digital age and enhancing research capabilities.

The Role of AI in Drug Discovery and Clinical Trials

A significant portion of the discussion centered around the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on drug discovery and clinical trials. Dr. Sangeeta Sharma, a leading expert in Neuropsychopharmacology, highlighted AI’s potential to streamline traditional clinical trials, which are often time-consuming and resource-intensive. She noted that AI can accelerate lead generation, optimize clinical research, and enhance personalized medicine approaches. However, she also cautioned against over-reliance on algorithms, emphasizing the irreplaceable role of human judgment in clinical decisions.

Dr. Sharma’s insights were complemented by Mr. Namit Joshi, Commercial Director at Centrient Pharmaceuticals, who discussed AI’s applications in supply chain management and demand forecasting. He pointed out that while AI can enhance operational efficiency, it should not be viewed as a replacement for human expertise. Rather, it should be utilized as a tool to augment decision-making processes.

Addressing Counterfeit Medicines and Patient Safety

The issue of counterfeit medicines emerged as a critical concern within the pharmaceutical industry. Sneh Kumar Singh, Deputy General Manager of Supply Chain at Kraftland Consults, discussed the alarming statistics regarding counterfeit products in the market. He emphasized the need for stringent quality control measures and traceability systems, such as QR-coded packaging, to combat this pressing issue. The panel agreed that robust tracking mechanisms and regulatory compliance are essential to maintaining patient safety and ensuring the integrity of the supply chain.

Regulatory Reforms for Innovative Products

As the conversation shifted to regulatory reforms, Mr. Joshi stressed the need for supportive policies that foster innovation. He pointed out that while India has made significant strides in the generic drug market, it must now pivot towards fostering an environment conducive to research and development of innovative products. Suggestions included enhancing funding for research initiatives and streamlining approval processes to encourage faster market entry for new therapies.

The Importance of Branding and Market Awareness

Sakshi Narang, Marketing & Business Development Head at Kraftland Consults, emphasized the need for a shift in branding strategies within the pharmaceutical industry. She advocated for a transition from a product-centric narrative to a focus on evidence-based communication that highlights research capabilities and regulatory standards. By fostering credibility and trust, the industry can enhance awareness and adoption of innovative products.

Building Partnerships for Success

The session concluded with a discussion on the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to scale up innovations in the pharmaceutical sector. The panelists highlighted the need for partnerships between academia, industry, and government to drive translational research and bridge the gap between innovation and market demand. By fostering a collaborative environment, India can harness its talent pool to position itself as a leader in the global pharmaceutical landscape.

Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead

As the pharmaceutical industry in India navigates the challenges of speed, safety, and scalability, the insights shared during the session underscore the vital role of innovation, digital transformation, and collaboration. With a focus on research and development, regulatory reforms, and effective branding strategies, India can continue to solidify its position as a global leader in pharmaceuticals. The journey towards a more innovative and sustainable future is not just a possibility; it is an imperative for the industry.

New Delhi, Oct. 03 (India Science Wire): A two-day national conclave on “Women in Science & Technology: Fostering Innovation” co-organised by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, concluded on September 30, with the launch of two new SERB-POWER research grants for women scientists and researchers.

The POWER Translation Grant will enable women academicians to fast-track the commercialisation of their technologies, and the POWER Mobility Grant will provide travel support for women scientists, engineers, and technologists to gain international research exposure.

Prof Sandeep Verma, Secretary, SERB, announced the new verticals under SERB’s POWER (Promoting Opportunities for Women in Exploratory Research) scheme.

“We are glad to partner with IITGN in creating the right footprint to bring together the Indian women researcher’s community. With four verticals under the SERB’s POWER scheme, including the two newly launched grants, our women researchers would have the right kind of funding to come up with their original ideas and take it forward to the level that it can be benchmarked globally,” said Prof Verma.

Prof Amit Prashant, Officiating Director, IITGN, said, “These deliberations help nurture new friendships and lead to better productivity through collaborations.”

The inaugural session of the conclave was virtually addressed by Dr Archana Sharma, the only Indian staff scientist involved in the discovery of the ‘God particle’ and also the first Indian to get recruited by European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva.

While addressing the women scientists, she highlighted various opportunities for curious minds in core and applied science, technology, and theory.

“Studying science, engineering, or physics prepares you with a new set of very multidisciplinary skills and can have implications far outside our fields to make a huge social impact. In our country, science and engineering are being facilitated like never before. We should focus on strategic national priorities and engage in international projects in such a way that we are able to make a difference that is meaningful to our country. Articulate your dreams very well, hook on to what you want to do, and never stop,” said Dr Sharma.

Nearly 200 women scientists, researchers, academicians, industry professionals, entrepreneurs, students, and postdoctoral fellows from across the country participated in the two-day conclave, and discussed challenges and opportunities in the field. (India Science Wire).

New Delhi, June 30th (India Science Wire): The Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India, Prof K. Vijay Raghavan launched ‘Grassroots Innovation Programme (GRIP)’ for students, an initiative by IIT Delhi under which the Institute students will work on finding novel solutions to grassroots societal problems identified by them from rural and semi-urban areas, including the communities they come from.

Lauding the initiative launched by IIT Delhi, Prof K. Vijay Raghavan expressed hope that GRIP will result in the development of several innovative solutions for society.

Activities proposed as a part of this new initiative includes Social Immersion, a programme in which group of students will visit communities located in smaller towns and villages to immerse in social environments for a substantial time (one week to months) to study, understand and identify local needs and challenges, which can be addressed by the students when they return to the Institute campus.

“The immersion programme provides an opportunity for students to put themselves in the shoes of end-users and to co-create solutions which are likely to succeed. This programme also acts as a pipeline of ideas, which students and student teams can address as a part of semester-long design and innovation courses already available to them,” said Prof. PVM Rao, Head, Department of Design, IIT Delhi who is coordinating the initiative.

Another component of the GRIP initiative includes Grassroots Innovation Programme in which students and student teams will be allowed to work on semester-long or year-long projects on finding novel solutions to grassroots problems identified by them.

The needs/problems on which students are expected to work can be from one of the two routes: Students or student teams have identified the problem/need and validated it as a part of prior social immersion programme. Secondly, IIT Delhi student(s) who come from diverse regions of the country, identify problems/challenges being faced in their local communities (in their villages, towns and semi-urban settings).

The GRIP initiative will provide physical, intellectual, and financial resources to the students to carry out these projects. To implement the above programmes, existing courses and schemes of the Institute will be leveraged. In this way students will have an opportunity to earn academic credits for their efforts. The programme can synergize with other programmes of the Institute, which include UBA, RUTAG, NSS, ENACTUS, etc.

“There are many students who have shown interest in addressing the unmet needs in their own neighbourhoods. Further, students are enthusiastic to participate in proposing and validating novel solutions that respond to the local situation and the interests and values of the communities involved. The GRIP initiative is aimed at providing resources to the students who want to help the society by solving its problems,” said Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi.

IIT Delhi and Honey Bee Network (HBN), a volunteer based network that seeks innovative ideas and traditional knowledge produced at the grassroots level by individuals and communities and disseminates them to the wider ecosystem, have joined hands to groom students as torchbearers of social and grassroots innovation through GRIP programme.

Prof. Anil K. Gupta, Coordinator of Honey Bee Network said, “For the GRIP initiative, the Honey Bee Network will act as one of the facilitators to connect IIT Delhi students and faculty with local communities and environments.”

He further said that the social immersion and shodh-yatras will give an opportunity for students to learn from grassroots innovators and also to add value to their efforts. Students who do immersion in earlier years will have additional opportunity to address some of the needs identified by them as their course projects. (India Science Wire) ISW/USM/IITD/ENG/30/06/2021

With this year’s World Population Day’s theme being reproductive health and gender equality essential for achieving sustainable development, the focus has once again shifted towards the need for women’s reproductive health. Surveys have shown that how women having lack of knowledge on sex, contraception, pregnancy and abortion has been affecting their reproductive health orientation.

Also Read: WHO’s First Guideline to Digital Health Interventions

A reproductive health orientation means that people have the ability to reproduce as well as to regulate their fertility; women are able to undergo pregnancy and childbirth safely and that the outcome of pregnancy is successful, in terms of both, maternal and child health and well-being. Reproductive health is affected by a variety of socio-cultural and biological factors and the quality of the delivery system. A woman-based approach to reproductive health is one which responds to the needs of adult women and adolescent girls.

Also Read: Screening for Cervical Pre-Cancer in India
Current Scenario

Even after four decades of the inception of the family planning program, nothing much has been observed in terms of the population growth rate, which continues to grow at over 2% per year. Currently, almost 18 million people are added to India’s population annually, from which 40% of the population comprises children under the age of 14 years.

Also Read: Smart Toilet Detects Cancer, Diabetes Through Urine

Life expectancy has now reached 61 years, up from about 44 in 1960; and the crude death rate has fallen dramatically from 27 per 1000 population at the time of Independence in 1947 to 9.8 per 1000 (1991). In Kerala, which reports the longest life expectancy, there is 67.2 years for males and 72.4 for females Whereas, in Uttar Pradesh, which reports among the lowest life expectancies in the nation, there is a reversal of the gender pattern: while males can expect to live a total of 57.1 years, female life expectancy is only 52.8.

Gender Disparity the biggest roadblock in Unequal Access to Healthcare

Women’s unequal access to resources be it healthcare, education is a reality. Even economically, despite being majority of rural Indian women are active, their work goes largely unrecognized and poorly remunerated. Where women work, they earn lower wages including lower cash to kind ratio than that awarded to men. When it comes to household level, women have little decision-making authority and freedom of movement. Many behavioral norms further reinforce women’s lack of freedom of movement, self-confidence and acceptance of self-denial including in matters relating to health seeking and food intake. Violence against women and rape are all part of women’s lives. Women’s poor reproductive health in India can be attributed to various sociocultural and biological factors. Thus, efforts to improve women’s education are fundamental, be it raising enrollment and attendance rates of girls in school, reducing the drop-out rate on the one hand or enhancing women’s income autonomy on the other.

Also Read: Addressing Unmet Needs in India’s Health System
Loopholes in the Women Reproductive Program

India’s Family Welfare Program are basically focused on achieving demographic targets by increasing contraceptive prevalence and notably female sterilization. However, the Indian family planning program also evolved through a number of stages. It has changed its focus. In the early years, the program was laid with loads of caution and its impact was hardly felt. Then during 1965-75, the program was strengthened by integrating family planning with maternal and duringthe period child health services were introduced. It was also during that decade, abortion was legalized. Despite all these, India’s maternal mortality ratio is estimated at 555 per 100,000 live births, about fifty times higher than that of many industrialized nations and six times as high as that of neighboring Sri Lanka.

The following sub-sections highlight major concerns in the area of reproductive health:
a) Focus to be laid on reproductive morbidity and maternal health
b) Improving access to safe abortion
c) Information on sexually transmitted diseases
d) Improved quality of reproductive systemViolence

Introducing The Patient Experience Excellence Awards 2019
The Patient Experience movement is growing within India and around the world. Both hospitals andhealthcare providers are realising the significance of patient feedback which is being used in theirown teams to improve patient care.
The CRM ACADEMY OF ASIA – TERRAGNI – ICC Patient Experience Excellence Awards 2019, recognise invaluable service in celebrating what is best about what we do, encouraging others andraising the bar a little higher each year. Fortunately with the benchmarks these awards willrecognise, everyone will leave with at least one new idea to put into practice back home. The awardswill select those ambassadors with a patient-centred approach – with a critical role to play in qualityimprovement. As the quality of Patient Experience also affects patient safety and self-reported outcomes, this work has much wider effects. The move to new care models will show the newopportunities to improve care across boundaries where it has traditionally fallen short.
The PEXA2019 Awards are the only recognition for contribution to Patient Experience in the countryand are based on innovation and impact.

Hypertension, high blood pressure or BP, call it by any name; is a common condition which is caused by the force of blood against the artery walls.

A new study has highlighted the need for an intensive effort to improve upon hypertension awareness, care and control in the country especially for those in the most productive age group of 15–49 years, with emphasis on households with lower-income levels and those living in rural areas.

The study, which was based on the data collected under the National Health and Family Survey 2015–16 has found that efforts to tackle hypertension are lacking in all aspects, from screening for the condition and providing a diagnosis to the level of treatment given to the patients.

The data, for instance, showed that only three out of four people, who were found to have hypertension during the survey, had ever been checked for blood pressure earlier and only 45 percent of the hypertensive patients identified during the survey already knew that they suffered from blood pressure problem. Further, less than one in seven (13 percent) reported that they were under hypertensive medication and less than one in 10 (8 percent) had their blood pressure under control.

Significantly, contrary to general expectations, women had better control over their blood pressure than men. The analysis revealed that while 10.9 percent of hypertensive women were taking their medicine and had normal blood pressure; on the contrary, only 5.3 percent of hypertensive men did so.

The National Health and Family Welfare Survey had covered 731,864 individuals from twenty-nine states and seven union territories.

“Detection of hypertension is straightforward, treatments are simple yet effective, and hence hypertension can be easily controlled. However, India does not perform well in any of the measures of detection, treatment and control,” said Dr. Dorairaj Prabhakaran, Vice President, Research and Policy at PHFI and one of the authors of the study. “The new National Health Mission through the health and wellness clinics has the potential to address the issue.”

Dr. Lindsay Jaacks, another member of the research team, said, “we need demand-side interventions to raise awareness in India that hypertension is relatively easy and cheap to treat, and that keeping it under control can have huge benefits in terms of preventing heart attacks and stroke.”

Marking the International Women’s Day this year, researchers from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT- Delhi) have launched a roll-on that could be used for relieving period pain. Based on essential oils including eucalyptus oil, menthol and wintergreen oil; it can also help improve the mood of users.

The product has been developed by two third year students at textile technology department, Archit Agarwal and Harry Sehrawat. It took seven months for them to come out with the formulation.

When a woman, who is having periods, suffers from pain, she just needs to apply it on the place where there is pain. She will get immediate relief. It will be effective for up to about eight hours. One 10 mL roll-on can be used for three period cycles. The rolls have an expiry date of three years from the date of manufacture.

It is different from other pain relief roll-ons and ointments as those are formulated to give heating effect first and then cooling effect. This one is formulated in a way that it gives cooling effect first and then the heating effect. “This is the best way to handle period pain”, said Archit Agarwal.

“One of my friends could not write her exam properly and was feeling terrible about it. On questioning, she confided that she could not study well because of period pains. From there we got the idea and we thought we should do something about it”, he said.

The product, he noted, is 100 per cent natural and has no side effects. Clinical trials were conducted on two age groups: 14–28 and 28–35. The trials were conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the feedback was positive.

Dr. Rita Bakshi, Chairperson, International Fertility Center, Delhi, who was present at the launch programme, noted that the major main plus point of the ointment is that there is, nothing to consume and it is made of natural ingredients. “As a doctor, I recommend pain killers. But, many women don’t take them for fear of side effects. This one is a roll-on and is applied externally. I am sure women will use it happily”.

Name Sanfe, the new roll-on product for period pain is available on e-commerce sites and medical stores.

Healthcare is transitioning from human touch of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to devices and now information technology. In today’s world, healthcare is buzzing with new domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or should it be called assisted intelligence, machine learning, big data, block chain, Internet of Things (IoT), connected healthcare, mHealth, eHealth, cybersecurity and many more. These terminologies are being used by many without knowing its definition, use and limitation. It is creating a new community of providers. All this is good as long as we are not servient to technology and we control it for the benefit of providers and patients. Even medical personnel these days want to diagnose without touching the patients, without any concern for evidence-based medicine, human touch and compassion. Technology has made big in-roads in healthcare, but should it dispense health professionals as few think.

India is also fast changing to adopt new technologies. As per a recent estimate, AI has potential of bringing $957 billion to the Indian economy by 2035. This may be the cause for luring young professionals to this new domain.

1. NovioSense – The device that can be kept in the eyes to monitor sugar levels

IEEE spectrum has discovered a recent study that seems promising for the Dutch startup Noviosense’s own wearable glucose monitor that measures tears by sitting in one’s lower eyelid. The result was close to 95%accuracy to the levels of glucose as recorded in blood. Therefore, the newly developed glucose monitor can be placed in the lower eye lid to measure glucose level in tears. It works by tapping into basal tears or a continuous stream of tears that do not require stimulation. The spring coil can rest in the eyelid for long periods and will not be displaced even if users’ rub their eyes.

Though the innovation seems to be another milestone in the management of diabetes which presently is painful, inconvenient or sometimes tedious but the study had a drawback. The sample size consisted of only six people. Noviosense will need to conduct more tests to further prove the device’s validity and reliability.

2. Sensors to detect milk adulteration

According to a recent research published in the Food Analytical Methods Journal, IIT Hyderabad has developed a sensor-chip based detector system to detect adulteration in milk. This helps to measure the pH levels of milk through an indicator paper that changes color due to acidity of the milk. Currently, methods like chromatography and spectroscopy are used to detect milk adulteration, which are quite expensive, so the researchers at IIT used a relatively cost-effective process called ‘electro spinning’ to produce halochromic paper-like material made of nano- sized nylon fibres and load edit with a combination of three dyes.

They have also developed algorithms that can be incorporated on the mobile phones to accurately detect the color change. The algorithm captured the colors of the sensor strips after dipping in milk using the mobile phone camera and the data was then transformed into pH ranges. On testing with milk spiked with various combinations of contaminants, they found near-perfect classification with accuracy of 99.71%.

In order to get comprehensive milk quality check systems that can be incorporated in mobile phones or any other hand aids the team now aims to study the effects of mobile phone cameras and lighting on detection efficiency and hopes to develop sensors for other physical properties like conductivity and refractive index and integrate them with the pH detection unit.

The UK-based Med Tech Startup Test Card has created a postcard- sized urine test that can be done at home and is very much similar to a pregnancy test, which is analyzed by an accompanying app to provide immediate results. The postcard has an embedded, pull-out urine test. The urine test has no electronic component involved in its usage. The postcard test is likely to be launched in the UK in April 2019. In the near future, TestCard also plans to screen diabetes products in India.

4. IOTA Bioscience creates body sensor smaller than sand grain

An American biotechnology Startup, Iota Biosciences founded in 2017 by Carmena and Michel Maharbiz has recently raised 15 million dollars for its in body sensor which is smaller than sand grain.

The University of California in a micro electrode research developed the sensors called ‘neural dust’ which then transfers the data wirelessly from inside the body. The Co-CEOs hold exclusive rights to neural dust technology which offers revolutionary therapeutic applications for various chronic health conditions from inflammation to motor disorders and eventually cognitive impairment.

The advantage of this small-sized sensor is that it uses ultrasound avoiding any danger that is associated with wire and battery-provided implants. Since they are smaller and can be implanted deeper into the human body than traditional ones available, neural dust can interfere directly with specific nerve clusters allowing more precise diagnostics and treatments. Iota’s devices can concurrently record information and stimulate nerves giving near instantaneous closed-loop therapies that could better treat diseases from the inside out.

Scientists at University of California have created a wireless device called ‘WAND’ which works like a pacemaker for the brain and may aid in the treatment of disorders like epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Wand is a neuro stimulator that can monitor and stimulate the brain with electric current. This device is autonomous and can simultaneously stimulate and record electrical signals in the brain.
