What Is Mental Health?

In modern history for so long, health was primarily seen as the absence of illness, and mental health was viewed in the same light: if you didn’t show symptoms of mental illness, you were considered mentally well. But as psychology and medicine have progressed, it’s become clear that mental health is much more nuanced than simply not having a diagnosis.

Today, mental health is understood as a state of emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act, and it impacts how we cope with stress, connect with others, and make choices. Mental health is about thriving—not just avoiding illness—and it’s essential for living a balanced and meaningful life.

Factors That Affect Your Mental Health

Genetics
Genetics play a major role in shaping mental health. For instance, your natural tendency toward happiness is heavily influenced by your genetic makeup. Similarly, having a close relative with a mental health condition can increase your risk of facing similar struggles. That said, genetics aren’t destiny. Environmental influences and personal choices can greatly buffer or manage the effects of genetic predispositions. For example, while anxiety may run in families, developing healthy coping strategies and pursuing therapy can significantly lessen its impact.

Life Experiences and Trauma
Trauma—whether it’s from childhood or adulthood—can have a profound impact on mental health. Traumatic events like losing a loved one, experiencing abuse, or enduring significant life stress can leave lasting emotional scars. While trauma can be difficult, it doesn’t necessarily have to define your mental health long-term. Many people, over time, find ways to heal and even grow stronger from their trauma, though some might need professional help to process their experiences.

How to Improve Your Mental Health

Managing mental health is an ongoing process, and it’s crucial to develop healthy practices that help you cope with life’s challenges. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, below are some guidelines to improve your mental health and well-being.

Create Deeper Social Connections
Having strong social connections is one of the best predictors of good mental health. Instead of seeking external validation through material gains, focus on building meaningful relationships. Share your thoughts and feelings with people you trust, and seek those who will support you when things get tough. Relationships that offer emotional safety and vulnerability are incredibly valuable for mental well-being.

Develop Healthy Lifestyle Habits
Your body and mind are deeply interconnected. Taking care of your physical health can greatly enhance your mental health. Here’s how to start:

Sleep: Sleep is crucial for mental health. Consistent lack of sleep contributes to irritability, stress, and mental health disorders. The target should be 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a calming pre-sleep routine and avoid screen time or stimulating activities before bed.

Exercise: Regular physical activity releases endorphins, helping to improve mood and reduce stress. You don’t have to hit the gym for hours—simple activities like walking, jogging, or yoga can have a big impact.

Nutrition: A healthy diet supports your brain’s functioning. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Avoid excessive sugar and processed foods, which can worsen mood swings and fatigue.

Meditate and Practice Mindfulness
Meditation helps reduce stress and fosters a deeper understanding of your thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness meditation, in particular, allows you to observe your thoughts without judgment, helping you detach from negative thought patterns. Apps like Calm and Headspace, or the Waking Up app by Sam Harris, offer guided meditation sessions that can help cultivate peace and presence in your life.

Spend Time in Nature
Spending time outdoors is proven to boost mental well-being. Nature has a calming, restorative effect on the mind. Research shows that spending at least two hours a week in nature can significantly improve your mood and mental clarity. Whether it’s a walk in the park or a hike in the woods, make time to reconnect with the outdoors regularly.

Set Boundaries
Learning to say “no” and set healthy boundaries is essential for mental health. It’s easy to overcommit in work, relationships, and social situations, leading to stress and burnout. Be honest with yourself and others about what you can and can’t handle, and prioritize your own needs. Boundaries help protect your emotional energy and preserve your well-being.

Practice Gratitude
Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have. Regularly acknowledging the things you’re grateful for—whether big or small—can improve mood and mental health. Consider keeping a gratitude journal where you write down a few things you’re thankful for each day.

Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms
Life inevitably throws challenges your way. It’s important to have healthy strategies in place to manage stress and difficult emotions. Some effective coping mechanisms include:

Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices help you stay grounded in the present moment and alleviate stress.

Breathing Exercises: Deep, slow breathing can activate the body’s relaxation response, helping you manage anxiety or panic.

Talking to Someone: Don’t bottle up your emotions. Sharing your feelings with a friend, family member, or therapist can help you process difficult emotions.

Seek Professional Help When Needed
If you’re struggling with mental health issues, it’s crucial to seek professional help. A therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist can guide you through challenging emotions and provide tools to help you manage stress, anxiety, or depression. Therapy can also offer a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings, while medication may be necessary for some conditions.

Engage in Hobbies and Interests
Engaging in activities you love can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Whether it’s painting, playing music, gardening, or reading, hobbies provide an outlet for self-expression and relaxation. They also serve as healthy distractions when life becomes overwhelming.

Be Patient with Yourself
Mental health is a journey, and progress takes time. It’s essential to be kind and patient with yourself during difficult times. Healing is not linear, and some days will be harder than others. Celebrate the small victories along the way and recognize your progress, no matter how small.

Managing mental health is not a one-time fix but an ongoing process that requires attention, patience, and self-compassion. By developing healthy habits, building supportive relationships, and practicing self-care, you can create a solid foundation for mental well-being. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness.

These limbs are actually the steps to reach the super spiritual awakening related to that particular type of yoga.

The word YOGA is derived from the Sanskrit (The Ancient Indian Language) YOG/YUJ meaning “to yoke,” or “to unite”. The practice aims to create union between body, mind and spirit, as well as between the individual self and universal consciousness. Such a union tends to neutralize ego- driven thoughts, Stabilize mind and behaviours, creating a sense of spiritual awakening. There are different types of YOGA like Raaj Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga), Hath Yoga etc, and each of them have their own limbs/Components. For example limbs/Components of Raaj Yoga (Ashtang Yog) are:-

YAM (Moral Code)

NIAYAM (Disciplines),

ASAN (Yoga Postures),

PRANAYAAM (Control over breathing),

PRATYAHAAR (Withdrawal of Senses),

DHARANA (Concentration),

DHYAAN (Meditation),

SAMADHI (Salvation/ Super Spiritual Position)

There are Total eight limbs of Ashtang Yog. In Sanskrit “Ashta + Anga ” is ashtanga. “Ashta ” means Eight and “Anga ” is limbs so it means Eight Limbs. These limbs are actually the steps to reach the super spiritual awakening related to that particular type of yoga. But we can follow only some of the limbs of any type of yoga to live a healthy and peaceful life like ASAN, PRANAYAAM, and MEDITATION. This is what people are doing. The practice of Yoga started with the ancient Indian civilization. The science of yoga has thousands of years ago. Shiva, The Hindu GOD, called the Aadi Yogi (Means the first one or the initiator who achieved the super spirituality) OR Mahayogi (who achieved the biggest/Highest level of all types of YOGA).

Adiyogi poured his knowledge into the legendary Saptarishi which means “seven sages”. These sages then carried this science to different parts of the world. Later On the great Sage Patanjali systematized and codified the existing practices of Yoga, its meaning and its related knowledge through his Yoga Sutras known as “Patanjali Yog Sutra”. After Patanjali, many Sages contributed greatly for the preservation and development of this science through their well-documented practices and literature.

Ayurveda this body is made up of 5 elements — Space, Air, Water, Earth and Fire

Nowadays many people follow Yoga-Posture (ASAN) and PRANAYAAM (Breathing Exercise) to keep themselves healthy. It is true and it works. According to YOGA and AYURDEDA (Ancient Indian Medical Science) you cannot reach a super spiritual position without having a healthy body and a healthy mind. As we all heard, “A sound mind lives in a sound body”. So these ASAN and PRANAYAAM help you to heal your disease, Stabilize mind and senses and help you to live a healthy life.

The ancient Indian literature VEDA including YOGA and Ayurveda given the concept as :- “Yatha pinde tatha brahmande, yatha brahmande tatha pinde” The translation of this quote is as “All that is in the universe is within you, and All that is within you is in the universe. Means your body is a miniature universe. Also as per the Ayurveda this body is made up of 5 elements — Space, Air, Water, Earth and Fire.

It means YOGA and ARYURVEDA help us to connect with nature and with the universe. The simple concept is:- if you keep in touch with nature, you will stay healthy. There are many things that we should know in depth before practicing and teaching YOGA to others so that we can achieve all the benefits of this great science.

Postpartum stress or baby blues is the sadness that a mother faces after the delivery. It’s a common thing experienced by every mother and it doesn’t need medical treatment unless it becomes severe and lasts long.

Welcoming your little one brings along lots of surprises and challenges. Every new mother who has just stepped into the motherhood journey will go through the postpartum stress. A simple meaning of postpartum is “the phase of mood swings after the baby’s birth” or its after-delivery stress that can last up to 2 weeks or until your body comes back to a pre-pregnancy state. Now being a mother of 2 yrs old I am sharing my experience of going through the postpartum phase. The birth of a baby triggers a sudden feeling of excitement along with a puzzled mind about stepping into motherhood. A body goes through various changes during pregnancy time until the baby’s birth. Changes I refer to are- mood swings, crying spells (crying about every small thing), sleep disorders, body aches and many other emotional and physical changes. You can also say it is a learning phase for new parents. A mother’s world functions around the baby with whole new challenges lined up to face.

Becoming a parent is a joyous thing that is truly incomparable. However, for new mothers, this phase is all about adjusting to their everyday routine. Because a baby needs a lot of care and attention that leads to sleepless nights for new mothers. It is frustrating and tiresome but eventually, new parents become habitual of it. Although it’s important to take care of your baby, simultaneously a mother has to take care of herself as well. Postpartum stress or baby blues is the sadness that a mother faces after the delivery. It’s a common thing experienced by every mother and it doesn’t need medical treatment unless it becomes severe and lasts long. If you have a question in mind as to how to get to know whether you have baby blues symptoms? Here are 9 common signs of postpartum stress:

Having trouble eating habits

Sleeping disorder

Excessive worry

Lack of concentration

Irritability

Sadness and hopeless

Losing interest

Want to be alone all the time

Feel cranky and anxious

Becoming a parent is not an easy task. Your little one needs your timely care and attention, however, do keep a check on your health as well.

This phase can be overcome by taking small steps toward your health. I am sharing with you 6 secrets to manage postpartum stress or baby blues:

1. Meditation:

An Invaluable gift passed down to generations. It’s a healthier way to stay fit and happy. Initially start your routine with 10 to 15 minutes of meditation once the routine is set try introducing other exercises as well. You can also opt for walking or yoga. I have introduced meditation to my daily routine during the 6th month of pregnancy and continuing. It’s a proven stress-buster in every way.

2. Keep a check on your eating habits:

Becoming a parent is not an easy task. Your little one needs your timely care and attention, however, do keep a check on your health as well. Choose your food wisely with the right amount of nutrients. Some of the must-included foods in your diet have to be fruits, green vegetables, cereals, eggs etc. Your eating habits directly affect your baby, especially for breastfeeding moms.

3. Inculcate a hobby:

Introducing a hobby has always been a stress reliever. Be it reading, painting or anything that makes you feel enjoyable. Take out some time from your busy routine to flourish your passion.

4. Do not compromise your sleep time:

Do keep a check on your rest time. A new mother requires at least 9 hours of sleep to restore her energy and cope with the postpartum stress. Although your baby will take time to adjust to the daily routine and for the first few months, you will face sleepless nights. Here is when you can take the help of your partner. Parenthood is a shared duty and balancing the situation together will certainly help new mothers to recover quickly.

5. Look up to experienced mothers:

It is true that parenthood is a 24X7 job, however taking some time out and interacting with other moms can do wonders for your health. Sharing your fears and taking their experiences can be a game-changer to your health.

6. Ask for support:

Taking care of a baby is not at all one person’s job. Look up to your family, friends and relatives to ask for support in doing some household work or in handling the baby’s daily activities. Having a positive social circle around you can help you in coping with life difficulties. Follow these 6 simple tips to overcome the problem. Postpartum stress is normal and common among new moms. With proper care, support and engaging yourself in a positive environment postpartum stress and anxiety can be treated within time.

She is imparting her knowledge about Iyengar yoga through her institute ‘Yogakshema’. An inspirational road to recovery started when she joined as a patient under the tutelage of the legendary B.K.S. Iyengar, pioneer in the field of Iyengar yoga. Her twenty-two years of training and hard work has motivated her to help others through her knowledge. She has penned down her knowledge in a book on Yoga for the visually impaired in Braille. This book was released internationally during the first International Day of Yoga celebrations at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

When I met Dr. B.K.S Iyengar for the first time without me saying or explaining anything to him he diagnosed my issues just by looking at my skin at the base of the neck & I was amazed to see the depth of his knowledge and surrendered at his feet that very moment. When he started teaching me, as a student of science I realised, his work and knowledge is very scientific & par excellent. I was already fed up with modern Allopathic medicines & their respective side effects. The improvement with this practice of traditional knowledge reaffirmed my belief in Indian medicine system.

Few qualities that make Iyengar Yoga different from other school of Yoga are-

Alignment

He worked very hard on me as I was an interesting and challenging case for him & I reciprocated by practicing equally hard & making notes of his scientific way of teachings the way he wanted & the bond of Guru & shishya became stronger & stronger.

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, a Bengaluru based health-tech start-up Dozee, launched their Mindfulness feature and provided first-of-its-kind experience to Cancer patients at HCG – The Specialist in Cancer Care. Developed by IIT graduates, Dozee is a patented contact-free health monitor that tracks heartbeat, respiration, sleep and stress from under the mattress. Supported under Make in India campaign, Dozee’s launch of meditation feature on International Yoga Day is a powerful integration of two initiatives of the government.

The session was attended by 20 cancer patients and survivors from HCG. The session began with Dr. Raghavendra Rao (HoD CAM Program, HCG Oncology), talking on benefits of meditation and getting patients practise some yogic techniques. This was followed by 10 minutes of guided meditation, where patients followed the meditation instructions from Dozee app. Post the session, patients were provided with personalized report, quantifying the impact of the session on their heartbeat, respiration and stress levels.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Neeraj, a cancer patient said “This was a really unique experience for us. I felt my stress levels came down significantly, and I could see the result of it on Dozee app as well. The whole meditation experience became very real for me”.

Mind Matters
“Found hanging from the ceiling fan, she was still wearing her dancing shoes.”

As likely as this line is to come from fiction, it can find a place in a real death report. Teenage suicide. Did you know that one student commits suicide every hour in India? Often in disbelief, parents of these victims cannot find reasons for such an ‘extreme step’ in their seemingly normal lives.

Have you ever found your mind playing tricks on you? The devil on your shoulder telling you how unworthy you are, how useless your life is? You are not alone. Many people that you see around you might have felt the same way at some point or the other.

Data Speaks Loudly

Mental illness contributes to 7% of the global average disease burden. The number of suicides in India is double than the global average of 11 persons per 100,000 population annually. Mental maladies affect about 15% of Indian (and world) population as per latest estimates. One in six people are victims of mental illness. Depression and anxiety disorders alone affect around 8% of us.

Among the young, suicide is the third biggest killer, with depression the leading cause of early-age disability globally. In fact, mental disorders are thought to affect younger people than statistics suggest.

It’s Complicated

People experiencing mental disorders resort to one of several coping strategies: discussing the problem with friends or family, social isolation to escape being noticed, or camouflage true emotions into acceptable actions for fear of being judged or abandoned. Unfortunately, the latter two are more popular, driving forces being social stigma and taboo. There is little or no support to sufferers and their families. Surveys reveal that society even feels fearful of the sufferers!

Undoubtedly, behaviors that indicate mental disturbances can sometimes be hard to pinpoint, passed as the simple quirkiness of character than a disorder of the mind. But is the matter really that straightforward?

Lurking Around Dark Corners

As a society, we are usually shocked at the news of successful, high-performing, wealthy young individuals killing themselves. Celebrities like yesteryears’ actor Guru Dutt and Miss India 1997 turned VJ Nafisa Joseph took their own lives over strained personal relationships. On the other hand, when farmers drowning in debt kill themselves, the reasons are evident and understandable. Similarly, while some mental illnesses are conspicuous, others are not.

People closest to us know us the best; be it our habits, mood swings or fetishes. Yet, in this fast-paced life in the 21st century, signs of distress escape the friendly radars of our loved ones and our own selves. Besides the lack of free time, our reluctance to understand these complex phenomena, ignorance and social stigma worsen the situation for sufferers. Depressive bouts are confused with laziness, anxiety simply called lack of focus and attention deficit equated to incompetence. Such labels make a negative impact, especially on the young impressionable minds. In fact, half of all mental illnesses begin even before the age of fourteen!

Is It All In Our Heads?

Brains are complex machines. Scientists have been studying it for years to find neuropsychological causes and genetic bases of mental illnesses, which are many- depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, cognitive disability and so on. To understand where the problems lie, researchers dive deep into the workings of the brain. The clockwork includes a huge repertoire of chemical and electrical signals that pass between connected brain cells called neurons. Imbalances in signals between or within different parts of the brain result in myriad mental anomalies.

Anxiety is a result of an over-active amygdala- the fear center of the brain, resulting from an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory signals for this area, making sufferers more nervous and fearful than normal people. Severe anxiety disorders such as panic and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involve the same parts of the brain, only different disturbances in the ongoing signaling.

Depression, on the other hand, appears to be more complex. Firstly, the levels of chemical signals (neurotransmitters) called serotonin and dopamine are abnormal. Serotonin signals well-being and happiness to our brains while dopamine induces motivation. Secondly, the brain tissue is sometimes shrunken. Third, the ability to form new neurons and connections or repair and modify old ones is impaired. Lastly, immunity modulators called cytokines, which induce sickness behavior like staying indoors, sleeping a lot and generally, low energy levels are found in excessively high amounts in depressed individuals. Cytokine signaling is in fact elevated under chronic stress. Though depression manifests as slow behavioral changes that evade our observation, often simply under the cloak of sadness, it is a serious medical issue.

These findings imply that maladies of the mind are just like those of the body, say cancer or diabetes- complex diseases that manifest upon an interplay of genetic predispositions and environmental triggers- preventable, manageable, treatable. Basically, balanced neurological circuitry is essential for mental health.

Interestingly, we have also witnessed that most people tide over adversities, but some are unable to- not every victim of bullies becomes mentally ill. What determines mental resilience? Environment? Education? Or simply will power? Studies suggest that a feeling of security, purpose in life and positive experiences are the foundations to mental resilience. The sooner one starts building it, the better, but there is never a wrong time to build resilience. These building blocks are present both within and around us.

Happiness is Health

Preventing chronic negative thoughts is the key to a healthy mind. Children especially need to be allowed more leisure time. Physical activities like exercise, sports and dancing are known to release feel-good hormone endorphin which benefits the brain. Pursuing hobbies, activities that make you happy or fulfilled and content can keep you motivated in low phases of life, teaching you to celebrate little victories. A hearty laugh works the same way.

Invest time in friends and family. Talking to and confiding in someone trustworthy helps you create a support system that you can summon in times of distress or crises. Give the children around you their due time and attention. Cuddling with a pet and playing with kids generates oxytocin- the bonding hormone. Above all, sleep well, for it helps your body and mind heal itself. Rejuvenate them both time to time using tools like meditation to keep serotonin and dopamine balanced.

If circumstances still catch you unaware, know that help is out there, if not in your home, at the touch of a button. Mental health foundations and support groups are at your disposal if only you call them for help. Phone helplines and online counseling portals like “Type a Thought” and “mystruggles.in” – that keep your identity anonymous, exist to resolve your distress. Sometimes simply talking to friends or family is enough to help you tide through. If none of the above helps, tap into professional psychiatrists. Taking medication to relieve yourself of sickness is not a shame. Do you think twice before taking a pill for cold? You might not even need medication. Interventions like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you learn new thinking patterns, overcoming anxiety and fear.

If only we as a community realize that mental illnesses are not chosen by those who are ill, like any other ailment, and fulfill our roles as parents, teachers, and caregivers, healthy and happy youth is not a distant dream. If only we would give children enough time, attention and affection, they would not grow up as broken individuals. If only we learn to ask “How are you?” and really mean it; if only someone were to ask us “Are you alright?” at our most terrible times; if only we accepted the differences among people; if only no one shamed the fat teenager; if only we didn’t burden our children with our ambitions and expectations (and maybe instead followed them ourselves), we could save lakhs of lives. And that would be a life worth living. Wouldn’t it?

We must remember, childhood and adolescence are tender, confusing and ruthless, all at the same time. Young minds need a sense of belonging, affection, and appreciation to grow up normally with nurture, cautious prodding and guidance at every step. This journey translates into meaning and purpose around which their entire adult life would revolve. Many mental illness victims report feeling unloved, unnoticed, or worse – blamed, bullied, beaten and shamed as a youth. So, if we want to save more people from mental disorders, the younger we catch them, the better.

Our best wishes for the Year 2019 to all our readers, advisory group and wellwishers. We have completed three years and this year has been very eventful; we have launched IC Foundation of Healthcare and Excellence (ICFHE), a not-for-profit organization for social interventions and are now connected to the community of 40,000 like-minded people. We have put this issue on the theme of “Innovation in Diabetes-Unmet needs“given India has 73 million population suffering from Diabetes and 50% of people are not even diagnosed properly which means 7% of the Indian population is diabetic. World’s 18% diabetics are in India, second largest in the world. At present, the world has 425 million diabetics which would become 629 million in the year 2045.

We intend to handle this menace by conducting awareness programs, find innovative methods to bring diagnostic tools and treatments at a lower cost with quality & behavior modification programs for preventive and curative measures.

The lifestyle changes are the key to the treatment of lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity and select cancers. They cause complications for other parts of the body such as eyes, heart, kidney, and foot. People must be told of the importance of diet, exercise, and meditation in order to have a healthy lifestyle. We have taken this initiative and created a website to raise awareness of the latest scientific interventions www.experimentswithsugar.in

We intend to publish articles regularly of common interest and would also encourage the professionals in this field to share their experiences through our magazine. Our team participated in ESICON 2018, to learn latest on the diabetes treatment from the top experts. We have also surveyed the clinicians for their unmet needs and will soon be releasing the findings.

We plan to have the next issue on the theme Cyber4Health: security and privacy issues linked with the health sector and their solutions. Healthcare providers are welcome to share their articles and help us increase awareness in this new arena. Our cybersecurity training programs for senior officers of the Armed Forces and various healthcare organizations were very well received.

What is new in the kitty for 2019-a delegation visit to Sweden during the month of May for B2B meetings and Vitalis conference; regular club meetings, InnoHEALTH magazine issues, and webinars to promote and foster innovations; our annual international InnoHEALTH conference in October in New Delhi.

We request you to join in various initiatives and make your contributions towards a better world.

In the first edition itself, the IYD had a roaring success worldwide and India created two world records. Since then, there is no going back in terms of celebrating the day with traditional gusto and ever vaulting spirits. Both President and Prime Minister led the nation on the day’s observation. To recap, the event’s increasing footprints, we decided to dedicate the current issue to IYD. And run a fleeting flashback of memories to revive afresh what happened in the previous three editions worldwide.

In March this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a “Fit India” movement, focusing on the benefits of yoga, in ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Mr. Rajyavardhan Rathore, the newly appointed Minister for Information and Broadcasting, seems to have taken a cue from the PM to take the initiative forward. He recently tweeted a video of himself doing push-ups with the hashtag #HumFitTohIndiaFit. Since then, the fitness campaign zoomed into a debate and many people accepted the challenge and started posting their videos.

International awards winner filmmaker Janet Tobia who has won laurels for her documentary “Unseen Enemy” flags major concerns over lurking threats on the environment. She was interviewed by our magazine to highlight her views on the Environment Day. The Emmy award winner said that her movie Unseen Enemy examines why in the 21st century. We are experiencing a rash of diseases that were once only outbreaks but have now become full-blown epidemics. She is precisely right on her perceptions and the fresh outbreak of Ebola in Congo vindicates her concerns.

Amid growing number of violent incidents against young children, we interacted with UNICEF’s India In-charge. Fresh from her experience in managing emergency situations, Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque handles the tsunami of problems during her current assignment. She has disclosed that the Indian government in collaboration with UNICEF is developing a comprehensive plan on digital safety for children. Digital literacy is key to ensuring that all boys and all girls stay informed, engaged and safe online. There is a need to galvanize ‘zero tolerance’ towards violence against children.

In the current issue, we are also carrying a number of other articles like forthcoming plans to jail those found guilty of poaching medical data of patients; medical commission bill facing rough weather; monkeys spa in Japan; how to breathe; IC meeting highlighting the era of disruptions; latest trends in healthcare and many more interesting stories of the health sector.

What is DANCE?
It is not just a form of art wherein you move rhythmically to music for entertainment. But, it is also a type of therapy. Here is how?

The purpose of dance is to express one’s emotion freely and take pleasure in performing it. If one is angry, cheerful, melancholy, afraid or feel strongly about something, one may choose to show it through eyes, facial expression, and body movements in dance.

There is nothing new about dance. It is well known that dance benefits our body and mind. People have been dancing for centuries or you can say since childhood for entertainment. However, dance as a type of therapy was recognized back in modern dance movement of 19th century. During this movement, it was realized that dance could go beyond simple entertainment, and can be used as a form of expressions. By mid of 20th century, dance therapy developed in US and Europe which added observation, interpretation and manipulation of dance elements into the practice. In 1966, a professional organization, the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was established. Dance movement therapy (DMT) in USA, Australia, and dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) in the UK is the psychotherapeutic use of movements and dance to support intellectual, emotional and motor functions of the body,as a form of expressive therapy.

DMT uses movement and expression with the skills of psychotherapy, counseling, and rehabilitation to help individuals to achieve both physical and mental health, stress reduction, disease prevention and mood management.

Following are some recent research which showcases that dance therapy can be effective in the treatment of mental health issues like eating disorder, depression, and anxiety.

A study from the Journal of Arts in Psychotherapy (2007) found that dance therapy had a positive effect on participants experiencing symptoms of depression.

A study from Alzheimer’s care (2009) suggests that DMP improves memory recall in people with dementia.

American Journal of Dance Therapy indicated that DMT may be a treatment option for children on the Autism spectrum.

Also, it can be considered as a treatment option for childhood obesity.

At my golden age with silver hair and a young heart, I must say, dancing helps me feel a lot better. I did all sorts of exercise, yoga, meditation, walking, jogging, etc. but I didn’t enjoy any of it and discontinued it sooner or later. Then, I realized that my body moves with emotions and expressions whenever I hear beats of music. I become thoughtless, feel happy and energetic. My mind connects with my body and soul, it’s like meditation to me. It therapeutically heals my aching joints and stiffness of body due to lifestyle diseases, much better than any physiotherapy ever could. This article is not some kind of scientific research, as lot of research on this topic has already been done all over the world. It’s only my insight and personal experience after joining a dance class. A group or couple dance class helps motivate you to do better each day and builds your confidence.

Some people might think, “A dance class? At this age? ”. Yes, I know it is uncommon but why not. One of the reasons that people of my age do not turn up at dance classes is because they are shy. Many North Indian families in earlier days did not appreciate dancing and did not allow girls to dance as it was looked down upon. I was never allowed to dance but allowed to do higher education in those days.

I will not tell you how to move your body or on which song you should dance or how you should dance…… No. I am only going to tell you to move your body and express your feelings as we all know that dancing makes us feel light, joyful, releases happy hormones such as Seratonin, Endrofin, Dopamin etc. Dance moves can predict our feelings like if we are anxious, or self-conscious while dancing, it will show through our moves. You can do any type of dance i.e. Ballroom, Ballet, Tango, Zumba or just wiggle slightly, do what you love or what you feel comfortable with.

Dance like no one is watching and just let go of yourself is the secret of good health. You do not have to be a dancer to get benefit from dance movement therapy. Do not let shyness, age or stamina come on the way. Let your heart dance with joy and happiness, your eyes will dance with emotions and your body movements will improve motor skills. The concept of DMT is new to India and needs more attention. India being the motherland of traditional and modern dance forms can be the new platform for DMT. A new concept like beer yoga is becoming a fad in our society wherein I feel DMT is much more scientific and effective in gaining holistic health. So be happy, enjoy and destress yourself, have a good diet and get better sleep. That is a secret of a happy and healthy golden age.

If you wish, sometime instead of sport shoes, put on your dancing shoes…Hey…..Come on…..Dance.
