India is a diverse country, whether the diversity is in culture, religion, eating habits, or exercising habits. Earlier, there was this notion that if you eat healthy and exercise daily, your heart will stay healthy. The heart is an organ that needs to beat continuously so that every organ can get oxygenated blood to function. To let it function properly, one needs to take care of it. The effects of your daily lifestyle have a major impact on your heart, and along with that, heredity and environmental factors play a role in heart health. If you compare the day-to-day lives of 21st and 20th-century individuals, a massive difference in their eating and working habits will be inevitable. The difference in time showed the fast-paced life evolution where exercise habits have also changed. There were gyms earlier as well, but for boxers or sports people. Common people’s physical labor was cycling or walking to anywhere they went.

Most of them didn’t have machinery such as bikes, cars, etc. But physical exercise is not the only way to protect your heart; it involves multiple factors. Let’s see what the other factors are. One of them is eating healthy, which is another way to reduce consumption of processed food, less sugar, and less saturated fats or trans fats, as these will gradually lead to increased obesity, blockages in heart vessels, and the heart having to struggle for every beat, eventually leading to a heart attack.

The environment also has its effects on overall health as well as on heart health. Most people are aware of these facts but choose to ignore them. Some do care; they eat healthy and they workout, but what went wrong was that they got a heart attack. Sometimes, when everything is right, there is something wrong hiding behind that right. Changes in the working lifestyle and trying to be ahead of the competitive nature of today’s generation have left no space to relax and calm down. This not only affects their health but also their relationships with family and loved ones.

Thus, a lot of emotions are piling up in the form of stress, which is one of the major reasons for heart attacks in people who have a balanced diet and exercise. Not only that, but stress – smoking and alcohol consumption—and lack of sleep also contribute to it. For adults, at least – 8 hours of sound sleep is required.

“Eat right, sleep tight, and exercise light” should be the new life mantra for this generation”. Apart from this yearly checkup of your heart, invest in certain basic tests like an electrocardiogram, an echocardiogram, and a stress test (exercise tolerance test (ETT) or treadmill test) and certain advanced tests like cardiac CT, chest x- ray and Thallium scan (myocardial perfusion scintigraphy) as per your physician’s recommendations on the basis of your blood test and symptoms, if any. So, you can make it a habit to visit your physician once or twice a year to keep up with your heart health.

This discovery suggests we should change public health messages. Instead of pushing intense daily exercise for everyone, we should focus on personalized, moderate, and varied physical activities. It encourages us to tune into our bodies, to find equilibrium between activity and rest, and to recognize that health includes physical, mental, and emotional aspects. By doing this, we aim for a healthier life that reduces risks and embraces overall well-being. It also shows how important
scientific research is in updating our knowledge about what’s best for our health. “Fit to Fail” reminds us that real health is not simple.

According to NCD (non communicable disease) Risk Factor Collaboration (2019), rural areas now contribute 55% to the world’s rise in mean body mass index (BMI), a statistic previously dominated by the urban population.

The near tripling of worldwide obesity since 1975, as reported by the World Health Organisation, is an indication of our failure to identify and curb a complex condition with health implications spanning from psychological complications to chronic health disorders. The early to mid-twentieth century witnessed obesity in the groups dominating the socioeconomic ladder, with malnutrition wreaking havoc on the other side of the spectrum. According to NCD (none communicable disease) Risk Factor Collaboration (2019), rural areas now contribute 55% to the world’s rise in mean body mass index (BMI), a statistic previously dominated by the urban population.

The new age of obesity has expanded its range and has mutated to coexist with undernutrition, giving way to a paradoxical amalgamation of the worst of the two worlds. Regular consumption of calorie-dense and nutrient-scarce meals temporarily relieves the brain of its hunger but also leaves a void, essential for various bodily processes, warranting deficiencies and creating favourable conditions for chronic diseases to flourish. Data from worldobesity.org predicted the burden on India’s economy by 2060 to cross the 400 billion mark.

Considering obesity’s alliance with life-threatening conditions and the resulting financial stress in today’s world, it has renounced its societal status from being a personal struggle in the past to a global threat today. Addressing obesity requires pulling the plugs on the supporting factors that have caused this evil seed to flourish and pollute the faculties responsible for a healthy life.

The subscribers to these bloggers reported feeling empowered and improved mental well-being as a consequence of belonging to a supportive community.

Visual Normalization Theory (VNT)

Research has consistently shown that when confronted with questions about one’s perceived weight, relatively healthier people provide realistic numbers, and people who weigh more, or are on the brink of obesity, underestimate considerably. A nationwide survey conducted in the UK, in 2013, reported that 55% of men and 31% of women denied being overweight even though they were. Eric Robinson, from Liverpool University, proposed this theory to dissect the widely accepted proposition that underestimation of weight can further complicate a person’s comeback from their actual weight. The incorrect estimate of one’s weight is either an honest admission or a deliberate attempt to sustain the preexisting state of denial, evading being categorised as part of a stigmatised social group.

As Eric Robinson wrote in his paper (Overweight but unseen: a review of the underestimation of weight status and a visual normalization theory), “Perception is shaped by previous experience, and because of this, increased obesity prevalence is likely to have recalibrated visual body‐weight norms”. Gradual tuning of one’s perception influenced by visual familiarity with heavier bodies has impaired the ability to identify and separate healthy from unhealthy, widening the inclusivity of the previously rigid health norms. Flexible norms have psychological merits as it lends the comfort of being a part of the ‘healthy group’, a luxury otherwise bestowed to the people occupying the lower end of the BMI scale. Robert E. Roberts and Hao T. Duong found a strong independent association between perceived weight and major depression in adolescents, suggesting an etiologic link between obesity and depression, with weight perception bridging the gap.

Perception untouched by awareness begets confusion, not leaving much space for potentially helpful interventions. Weight issues, be it anorexia or an alarming fat-reserve growth, emerge from calorie imbalance. Failure to acknowledge this gives way to fear-infused individualised definitions for an already well-researched phenomenon that doesn’t require more versions.

Hunter-Gatherers

Hunter-gatherers only have access to food when they deliberately decide to move and aren’t privileged to get food delivered to them by a fellow homo sapien. They largely survive on nutrient-rich, low-calorie diets and have excellent cardiovascular and metabolic health, not to forget, that obesity prevalence in this community, as reported by H Pontzer and team, is below 5%. Physical activity and low-calorie diets are the reasons behind this community’s exceptional health, and one doesn’t need a specialised degree to acknowledge that. The spread of such information should be our motive in eradicating doubts from the minds struggling with their weight. This, however, comes with another set of problems that deserve a separate section.

Insecurities and Body Positivity

Body positivity is the new age’s tool that gets wielded by people every time their insecurities are cornered. Under this movement, terms like fat, obese, and overweight are derogatory slurs directed at big-bodied people. In short, should not be used in the public domain. This movement previously concerned those subjected to fat-shaming and was an attempt to help them feel a little more accepted in an already fragmented world. F. C Stanford and the team said body positivity took the shape of a campaign to spread awareness of the harms caused by weight bias and fat shaming.

What started as a helping hand to a marginalised group has now become an excuse to not only justify being obese but also glorify it. A precise and more problematic version of the body positivity movement is fat acceptance. Unlike body positivity, fat acceptance is more convergent in its purpose of bringing the fat population together to fight the constant ridicule and prejudice they face regularly. Apart from spreading awareness, this united front against bullies has erroneously convinced people to feel proud of being obese. Marissa Dickens, with fellow scientists, examined the experiences of 44 bloggers from the Fatosphere community in their peer-reviewed article; The role of the fatosphere in fat adults’ responses to obesity stigma: a model of empowerment without a focus on weight loss.

According to researchers, to rise above the obesity stigma, these bloggers suggested reframing inappropriately directed slurs to dodge the psychological trauma that usually accompanies it and to stay clear of committing to losing weight as a consequence of the criticism. The subscribers to these bloggers reported feeling empowered and improved mental well-being as a consequence of belonging to a supportive community. As a coping mechanism, fat acceptance delusively warrants access to self-esteem but misses the target altogether, concerning itself only with self-acceptance and not the realisation of the threat obesity poses.

Harvard T.H. Chan, School of Public Health, defines obesity-associated health risks “as an illness that harms virtually every aspect of health, from shortening life and contributing to chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease to interfering with sexual function, breathing, mood, and social interactions”. Addressing the harmful psychological remnants of fat shaming and overlooking the urgency to lose weight is like severing the stem of a wild plant and expecting it to exterminate. A movement brought into motion only to make everyone agree with the individualised definition of obesity: fat acceptance accurately defines the cultural zeitgeist of the ongoing 2020s.

To move or become less active is a choice like restraining or giving into every urge to eat. It sure is more challenging not to fall for hunger every time, and insatiable eating habits make the struggle worse.

Fat-Free Mass & the Way Forward

Unfortunately, dodging reality won’t change the horror that is obesity. To fight this multi-faceted illness, we first need to address the relentless efforts of people wanting to impose their version of health on society to define the silver lining in this widely ridiculed disease. Then, we must stress adopting some well-needed lifestyle changes to dial the fat percentage down and enhance the fat-free mass simultaneously. R Burrows and colleagues, in their article “Low muscle mass is associated with cardiometabolic risk regardless of nutritional status in adolescents: A cross-sectional study in a Chilean birth cohort”, found that children with relatively better muscle mass were less likely to develop cardiometabolic diseases than those with low muscle mass, reporting in line with the previously observed association between fat-free mass and chronic health diseases.

In another study, “Muscle Mass Index as a Predictor of Longevity in Older Adults”, where a massive cohort of older adults was followed-up to interpret the influence of muscle mass on all-cause mortality, an inverse impact was derived. As concluded in the examples above, quality and longevity of life are both governed by muscle mass relative to the height of a person. Skeletal muscle dominates adipose tissue (body fat) in ramping up the body’s calorie expenditure at rest, aiding the total daily energy expenditure or TDEE. These benefits aren’t only available to those predisposed genetically to build muscle and are accessible to individuals capable of moving weight. To move or become less active is a choice like restraining or giving into every urge to eat. It sure is more challenging not to fall for hunger every time, and insatiable eating habits make the struggle worse.

On the contrary, satiating eating habits help dial down hunger, facilitating restraint from food when you have had enough. Journeying back from obesity can seem a little daunting at first, and adopting the conventional methods to lose fat can pose unwarranted stress on the mind and body. This usually happens when expectations hang beyond the pragmatic understanding of fat loss and meet the widely popular quick-fix methods.

The only way to deal with the carnage obesity has caused and will cause in the future, is by changing our attitude toward it. Let’s do it now before it’s too late.

Composed by: “Sarthak Kapoor is an exercise scientist associated with BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) certified sport and presently pursuing a master’s from Liverpool John Moore’s University in Clinical Exercise Physiology.”

How circadian is disrupted or aligned, what is the connection between immune system and light, why there are chances of being prone to some types of cancer-with relation to light, how retina gets damaged, effects of white LED exposure on retinal pigment epithelium, relationship of metabolism and muscular atrophy with respect to light and many of these inquisitiveness.

The idea that there can be an “unambiguous technique” for human-bio favourable lighting like tenable white without considering the bioblue transition to the dim grey appearanceand in the absence of other non-visible and visible parameters is totally unrealistic, because of the non synchronisation of the indoor skylight dynamics in concurrence with the outdoor skylight dynamics, tremendous variability between individuals based on their age, genetics, environmental factors, individual physiology, eating habits, and wake up or the sleep timings and our behavioural aspects. The harmony of the glands is accomplished by constantly synchronizing our body’s atoms, glands, genes, molecules, cells hormones in alignment of time cues- the LIGHT.

When DPA moved its Mumbai office to a new location they enlisted healthy lighting Design, their in-house group of illuminating experts, to solve the projects lighting challenges. The new space in the Ahmedabad’s based Office Tower is a conventional mix of open-area workstations, private offices and conference rooms with low 11’ 5” ceilings throughout.

The project’s lighting objectives were established “to provide wellness, healthy, interactive, an ergonomic and visually luminance balanced workspace,” means, “That evenly illuminating the ceilings, walls and work surfaces, while CS & EML levels the space and lighting should help the occupants with the better cognitive functions, minimizing glare and unwanted reflections.” Considering the limitations of traditional recessed & suspended fixtures, these objectives were easier said than done. The challenge was also to create aesthetically bright environments

Facts:

Until now we were concerned with defined lux levels, tuneable white light, UGR, CRI and the w/soft. Now there’s a product that offers controlled CS, CR ratio, EML, retino hypothalamic activation to trigger pineal & pituitary glands with the designed SPD for special bio-red & bio-blue technology in line with irradiance value to help out physiology of the body also helping our 3-neurotransmitters, cognitive functions brightness, uniform distribution and exceptional energy performance.

3. Proposed Standards for Light Quality

Being tenacious and ascertaining a healthier lighting space always requires a process of trading off some aesthetical and volumetric aspects of the space for healthier future gains. However, this has been a very thick proposition from an architectural and interior point of view, especially in the office and the residential segments.

We need to strategies w.r.t. legislative to be proposed and implemented regarding LQI-INDOOR LIGHT QUALITY INDEX., as there is an exponential rise in severe neuro and retinal disorders as well as the related illnesses. This is due to the inappropriate forms and sources of light that are contributing negatively to our health are:

3.1 How does the LQI work?

The standard of LQI can be broadly defined as the combination of visible and non-visible parameters (Wavelength, frequency, radiance, and irradiance, and photons, visual and non-visual acuity) for our health and wellbeing. The higher the LQI value, the greater the levels of these healthy parameters inducing the physiological and psychological benefits to the inhabitants For example, an LQI value of 80 (out of 100) represents good healthy lighting with respect to circadian alignment, ATP production, serotonin levels, melatonin balance and visual acuity as a rejuvenated space.

The LQI can be categorised into three different zones. Each category corresponds to a different level of health and wellbeing concern. Each category also has a specific features of the light as a product, components, is deliverables in terms of efficacy, lumens, flicker ratio, THD, Gamut values, CCT ratio, CRI, α-opic ratio EML, CS etc along with the presence of radiance and irradiance values, non-visible wavelength and its corresponding ranges subjected to the physiological. The purpose of the LQI is to help people know how the Light quality impacts their health and wellbeing. It must NOT contribute to

The business of lighting has grown Multi-folds over the past one decade and so do the technical understanding on the same embraced with the skills with respect to creativity, but the fundamentals of physiology in relation to light is still to reach those numbers. LQI is much more than just furnishing an appropriate quantity of light like lux levels, efficacies, R values, CRI, CCT, Macadam step etc…

There are many psychological as well as physiological factors that has to be covered under of lighting quality index (LQI). Lighting quality cannot be expressed simply in terms of photometric measures nor can there be a self explicit ways applicable formula for good quality lighting, but surely the lighting quality as expected and desired must be HEALTHY and not just smart or cost effective.

3.3 Objectives of Light Quality Index (LQI)

The DNA of our lighting industry changed with the arrival of LEDs. Thus our parameters w.r.t. the biology has to be restructured. The LQI primarily works on the contribution of lighting parameters (visible and non-visible) on human (the occupants) physiology and the psychology. Depending upon the indoor spaces and the layouts with respect to the topography the LQI parameters can be reset. For instance, LQI parameters for South Pole for an indoor or outdoor application will differ from the inhabitants of North Pole. The study of the sets of individuals is very crucial as the physiology of sets of human beings will differ and thus there cannot be one single yardstick to govern LQI. To make it easier to understand, the LQI can have mentioned pathways to be formed:

Affects of different spectrums on human health

By an appropriate use of lighting controls, tuneable white light blending with biored* and bioblue* lights to induce replica of the nonvisible and visible parameters of light {dawn, full sunny day & dusk timelines.}

Combination of appropriate forms of LEDs.

Avoiding the direct view of light sources, incorporating a lighting design to reduce the number of lights in a pragmatic manner.

Allowing the maximum parameters of Sunlight through the glass enveloped buildings

Need for an appropriate design for office lighting: SALVATION* series CAMA – Girish Bhardwaj, Tashi Aggarwal

It’s the need for the hour to re think and adapt lighting product design and the lighting consultancy which must contribute towards the Circular economy and biodiversity, health and wellbeing parameters rather lux or illuminance, cost benefits or CAPEX / OPEX point of views.

The design from SALVATION* seriesCAMA (Circadian Alignment &Mitochondrial Algorithm) based delivers both visual and non-visual benefits with respect to physiology, luminance / illuminance, visual acuity for the occupants. We have adopted the methodology towards the optimization for efficacy, LOR, TM-30 regulations, CRI, EML, CS and need for boosting mitochondrial activities to boost our immune systems as well as our cell regeneration while maintain the melatonin/ cortisol ratios.

Algorithms are based on the astronomical clocks for resetting of the desired SPDs and colour corrections with the an appropriate form of BIO BLUE* and Bio RED*

Introduction to the Salvation series:

Apart from the visual perception or the acuity, it is very well established that light is the governor of our hormones and it is very essential to maintain the harmony amongst the glands, hormones and the neurotransmitters. For example, our biological clock is regulated by the circadian and diurnal rhythms through the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that transmit light stimuli to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which governs our pituitary and pineal gland with negative transactional feedback loop systems..

Similarly, molecules which are chromophores’, absorbs the wavelengths emitted by the light source. There is an optical tissue window which varies from 600 nm to 1400 nm ( infrared spectrum). The chroma force in tissues which absorbs the light energy. These chroma force are found in MITOCHONDRIA. MITOCHONDRIA, in these we have specific molecule known as Cytochrome C oxidase, which is responsible to produce energy within MITOCHONDRIA. This means Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP), which is the end product of energy correlation and is the fuel our cells need for transporting irons for metabolism.

As compared to the traditional lights in the name of HCVL/HCL/Circadian drive the phenomenon of these office lighting is different and advanced in terms of technology and health benefits as we are focussing more on the circadian alignment and physiological benefits* from the longer wavelengths. SPECTRAL OPTIMIZATION FOR CAMA was utmost essential. The Luminous efficacy w.r.t. lumens, irradiance and joules / seconds has been given the priority along with the EML/CS/TM-30-18 and CRI parameters.

Salvation is a modular, adaptive & intelligent lighting tool designed for the biological wellbeing of the humans while meeting the visual needs of the occupants of any space. This luminaire is designed using the proprietary technology (patent pending) using specific wavelengths of light which are scientifically proven to aid to photo-:bio-stimulation and trigging cortisol, together with high quality LEDS which can be tuned to the required colour temperature.

The luminaire houses intelligent program embedded to tune to the circadian requirements of the occupants of a spaces along with triggering the photo stimulus at calculated intervals throughout the day. High quality electronics & control ensures to meet stringent flicker and EMF emission norms which further makes the luminaire safe & secure for daily usage .

To examine the association between bio-red, bio blue, NzER, FzIR and swift switchovers of Kelvins (2700-5500K) during office hours.
Methods: A total of 19 office goers who were subjected to SALVATION SERIES.
The controlled (auto and manual) ways of implementation of bioblue* transition to the dim grey appearanceand vice versa to trigger either the pituitary or the pineal glands (depending upon the time of the day) in concurrence with the tuneable white spectrum (with controlled intensities of the light)was give utmost important along with the task lighting and lighting during the work break sessions. In the present study as baseline and were followed up to 25 to 45 years of age. Sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 10 hours,

Introduction

Because all light sources were adjusted to provide the same horizontal as well as vertical illumination from table till 25 inches on a vertical plane (the standard measure that lighting designers use to illuminate indoor spaces), and because the spectral power distributions of the chosen LED light sources were significantly diverse, the intensity of total visible

Light entering the eye (measured vertically at eye level with the subjects seated at the conference table) varied between the light sources. This provided the opportunity to determine if the melatonin which was influenced by corneal light metrics (irradiance in μW/cm2, photon irradiance in photons/cm2/s, photopic illuminance in lux). Individual pupil sizes and macular pigment optical density were not measured and were not taken into account. There was a significant correlation between light intensity by any of these metrics and the melatonin results.

We next examined how well the most commonly used circadian lighting calculators, the circadian stimulus (CS; Rea and Figueiro, 2018), CIE melanopic irradiance (CIE 026S), and the closely related equivalent melanopic lux (EML) calculator the occupants were subjected under these conditions of variable LED light sources.

Apart from this the presence of NIR with the controlled ratios is utmost important for the applications like office lighting & healthcare units. Thus its not only aligning the circadian rhythm but also to induce the physiological parameters though the fed form of energy available in LEDs, all thanks to the advancement in the field of lighting which definitely is improvising the missing LED fed frequencies and the wavelengths which are must for humans, when spending more than 60% of their time in their work respective places.

Holistic health refers to the establishment of a link between the mind, body, and spirit, and the true meaning of Yoga is “union”—the union of the mind, emotions, and body. Yoga is more than just losing weight. It adds value and harmony to the body while also having a favourable effect. Those looking for a holistic approach to their health should try yoga. It will help them to manage their mental and emotional problems while also improving their physical health. Everything is connected and one will feel completely rejuvenated after yoga. Physical and breathing exercise, as well as meditation, boost general health. Yoga is a holistic system in itself. Yoga positions are designed to focus on the body while also lowering stress and improving health. It also helps to keep the mind and body in sync.

The benefits of yoga are solicited by the amount of balance, body awareness, and concentration, incorporated in one’s life and further promotes healthy aging.

Holistic wellbeing strikes a balance between physical and emotional well-being. It focuses on various aspects of life. If one adopts a holistic health strategy in their life, they will notice improvements in their emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being. After learning about the holistic health method, many have been able to overcome stress, sadness, addiction, and low self-esteem. The benefits of yoga are solicited by the amount of balance, body awareness, and concentration, incorporated in one’s life and further promotes healthy aging. The balanced mind helps us in understanding the needs of our mind and body, and also the propensity to develop a disease-free, healthy and beautiful body. A body free of disease and discomfort, both physically and emotionally.

It is a therapeutic method that frequently entails the use of a variety of complementary medicines and alternative healthcare methods. This method assumes that a person’s environment has an impact on him or her. As a result, it is preferable to choose nutritious foods over junk food or an unhealthy lifestyle over natural remedies. People want immediate results at the expense of long-term consequences. They do not live a complete and healthy lifestyle and do not benefit from the pure energy, vigour, and tone that god offers.

Researchers have proven that lifestyle decisions, whether made deliberately or unknowingly, cause illness or early mortality.

Any person’s mental attitude is influenced by what he chooses to hear or see, as well as what he wants to learn from the experience. Researchers have proven that lifestyle decisions, whether made deliberately or unknowingly, cause illness or early mortality. Consumption of excessive sugar, coffee, or embracing unfavourable mental attitudes such as anger, stress, or the use of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or a lack of exercise on a daily basis will degrade one’s personality in the long run.

Holistic health therapies take into account a variety of conditions and gradually but steadily enhance various levels. Holistic health is a continuous process that involves a variety of lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, exercise, and daily routine. It assists the individual in supporting the body’s natural healing system and allowing them to begin living happily. It creates a state of equilibrium in which a person begins to accept responsibility for his or her own optimal health.

She is imparting her knowledge about Iyengar yoga through her institute ‘Yogakshema’. Her personal ordeal with slipped disc, cervical spondylosis, an early-stage scoliosis has made her bedridden and invalid for eight long years. She even lost her ability to move her hands and legs. An inspirational road to recovery started when she joined as a patient under the tutelage of the legendary B.K.S. Iyengar, pioneer in the field of Iyengar yoga. Her twenty-two years of training and hard work has motivated her to help others through her knowledge. She has penned down her knowledge in a book on Yoga for the visually impaired in Braille. This book was released internationally during the first International Day of Yoga celebrations at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
When he started teaching me, as a student of science I realised, his work and knowledge is very scientific & par excellent. I was already fed up with modern Allopathic medicines & their respective side effects. The improvement with this practice of traditional knowledge reaffirmed my belief in Indian medicine system.

Few qualities that make Iyengar Yoga different from other school of Yoga are-

He worked very hard on me as I was an interesting and challenging case for him & I reciprocated by practicing equally hard & making notes of his scientific way of teachings the way he wanted & the bond of Guru & shishya became stronger & stronger.

Yoga not only improves physical fitness, but it is something much more, it is beyond physical health.
Stress is one major thing which has been clouding and shadowing the lives of most of the young generation globally. It is one constant thing that keeps hollowing our minds and lives. Many issues such as work pressure, social issues, personal problems may contribute to stress. Straining and persistent pressure often stresses the lives of the people and often leaves them with unbelievable problems including infertility. Studies reveal that infertility is not only caused by mental stress, but physical stress is also a major contributor to the problem. New evidence suggests that stress does affect fertility.

Infertility is the inability to reproduce even after having unprotected sex for a prolonged period. It is very important in today’s times that people start focusing on improving their lifestyles. Extended working hours with fluctuating shifts really obstruct the lifestyle of the intending parents which is strenuous for their fertility health.

Stress and anxiety often indulge people in activities such as smoking, drinking alcohol and drugs which significantly and temporarily reduce the stress levels but severely affect the fertility levels. These habits may have a direct impact on the health of the sperms and thereby reduce both their quality and quantity in men. This consequently may hamper the process of conceiving. The shape and motility of the sperms is also compromised which can reduce a men’s libido and hence cause impotence. People, who at large are exposed to such activities are likely to have greater risks of miscarriages and still births.

Increased stress levels and apprehensions may also drive few people towards unhealthy eating habits leading them to mostly consume junk food. This stress eating eventually leads to unwanted weight gain and obesity in people. Obesity can further result in Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is a condition that affects a woman’s hormone levels and makes it harder for them to get pregnant. Therefore, it is always advisable to check and control your stress and anxiety levels before planning to go for any kind of fertility treatment.

Ways to cut-off stress levels and boost your fertility

Take time off from your strenuous routine and involve in activities that you enjoy. Indulge yourself in watching movies, fun games, traveling, meditation, reading, spend time with your loved ones and make time for recreational activities. This will make you feel better and elevate your life condition.

Try to keep your personal and professional lives separate. This will help you maintain a better life at both places and substantially reduce the stress too.

If you think that your job is stressful and hampering your fertility levels, try and look for an alternative but do not leave it. That’s because any extreme changes in daily life usually increase stress levels. Also, accustomed routines are usually more stress-reducing than extra free-time. People with a habit of a regular and routine work culture, often find it difficult to sit home or idle

Indulge yourself in workout and exercising as they help in relieving stress and calm your mind. Zumba and exercises are fun activities to involve yourself in as they help you shed unwanted weight and keep you energetic throughout the day. Yoga and swimming are the best medicines for those dealing with infertility issues.

Be optimistic and do not fret or worry often if you are undergoing fertility treatments. Look at life with a bigger perspective and look for little things that make you happy.

Inappropriate diet, relationship problems, stress and lack of physical activity lead to chronic diseases and other health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, heart conditions, depression, and even some types of cancer. An unhealthy lifestyle and its consequences have a direct impact on acompany’s productivity and on the life of the employees and their families. keeping this in mind, the SESI Innovation Center for Health Technologies, Brazil, has created a health platform aiming to bring health and wellbeing for the industry workers.

According to a recent study published in the scientific journal Lancet shows that about 9.15% of the world population was considered obese in 2016, which implies around more than 700 million people on the planet. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that obesity is one of the biggest public health problems in the world. According to a projection by the same study, for 2025 about 32% of the world adult population will be considered overweight and more than 10% obese.

According to the WHO, chronic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world, whereas more than 40% of these deaths (16 million) were premature and could have been avoided by simple interventions.

Besides that, chronic diseases account for 65% of all health expenditures in the world. In Brazil, it is estimated that chronic and noncommunicable diseases will cause a total loss of 8.7% in GDP by 2030, which is equivalent to approximately US $ 184 billion. According to the WHO, chronic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world, whereas more than 40% of these deaths (16 million) were premature and could have been avoided by simple interventions. By reducing the risk factors for chronic diseases, the number of premature deaths could be reduced by half. For this reason, it is crucial to stimulate behavioral changes related to health habits.

Malaria Control Eradication Program Against Malaria in Odisha

On the other hand, in view of the increasing use of smartphones, including by healthcare professionals, the development of computational solutions in the form of mobile applications represents a compelling means of making effective health interventions available for a larger number of people. Additionally, digital health technologies have the potential to transform the health management system by enabling consumers to play an active role in their self-care and to define what services are important to them.

In this sense, technology is being developed to reach a greater number of people who understand and manage their own health, thus preventing more invasive interventions and generating fewer costs for the health system in the future. With that in mind, the SESI Innovation Center for Health Technologies has developed a virtual platform that aims to encourage the industry workers to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Our differential is the wellness coach functionality, which consists of a video conference channel for coaching sessions and a gamification system with customized challenges.

Nevertheless, this solution contributes to an increase in productivity and indirect reduction of health costs by the combination of health information and customized strategies for habit change. Applying artificial intelligence to make precise decisions about collective health promotion programs within formative dashboards of user groups, our platform is intended to facilitate the decisionmaking of companies regarding the best course of action to improve their employee’s health and wellbeing.

The platform’s prototype was tested in 194 Brazilian industry workers and it is now available in several companies of Brazil. After two years of development, it has undergone one year of tests and project pilots in two different states, four cities, and seven different companies, reaching a total of more than 400 employees. The platform has been tested for its usability, engagement and health and wellness benefits. The proposed technology is expected to bring benefits for a larger number of industry employees by keeping them healthier, as well as, in the medium term, cut company costs with disease treatment and removals. This platform also strengthens the company’s image regarding social responsibility to suppliers, customers, and competitors.

“Found hanging from the ceiling fan, she was still wearing her dancing shoes.”

As likely as this line is to come from fiction, it can find a place in a real death report. Teenage suicide. Did you know that one student commits suicide every hour in India? Often in disbelief, parents of these victims cannot find reasons for such an ‘extreme step’ in their seemingly normal lives.

Have you ever found your mind playing tricks on you? The devil on your shoulder telling you how unworthy you are, how useless your life is? You are not alone. Many people that you see around you might have felt the same way at some point or the other.

Data Speaks Loudly

Mental illness contributes to 7% of the global average disease burden. The number of suicides in India is double than the global average of 11 persons per 100,000 population annually. Mental maladies affect about 15% of Indian (and world) population as per latest estimates. One in six people are victims of mental illness. Depression and anxiety disorders alone affect around 8% of us.

Among the young, suicide is the third biggest killer, with depression the leading cause of early-age disability globally. In fact, mental disorders are thought to affect younger people than statistics suggest.

It’s Complicated

People experiencing mental disorders resort to one of several coping strategies: discussing the problem with friends or family, social isolation to escape being noticed, or camouflage true emotions into acceptable actions for fear of being judged or abandoned. Unfortunately, the latter two are more popular, driving forces being social stigma and taboo. There is little or no support to sufferers and their families. Surveys reveal that society even feels fearful of the sufferers!

Undoubtedly, behaviors that indicate mental disturbances can sometimes be hard to pinpoint, passed as the simple quirkiness of character than a disorder of the mind. But is the matter really that straightforward?

Lurking Around Dark Corners

As a society, we are usually shocked at the news of successful, high-performing, wealthy young individuals killing themselves. Celebrities like yesteryears’ actor Guru Dutt and Miss India 1997 turned VJ Nafisa Joseph took their own lives over strained personal relationships. On the other hand, when farmers drowning in debt kill themselves, the reasons are evident and understandable. Similarly, while some mental illnesses are conspicuous, others are not.

People closest to us know us the best; be it our habits, mood swings or fetishes. Yet, in this fast-paced life in the 21st century, signs of distress escape the friendly radars of our loved ones and our own selves. Besides the lack of free time, our reluctance to understand these complex phenomena, ignorance and social stigma worsen the situation for sufferers. Depressive bouts are confused with laziness, anxiety simply called lack of focus and attention deficit equated to incompetence. Such labels make a negative impact, especially on the young impressionable minds. In fact, half of all mental illnesses begin even before the age of fourteen!

Is It All In Our Heads?

Brains are complex machines. Scientists have been studying it for years to find neuropsychological causes and genetic bases of mental illnesses, which are many- depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, cognitive disability and so on. To understand where the problems lie, researchers dive deep into the workings of the brain. The clockwork includes a huge repertoire of chemical and electrical signals that pass between connected brain cells called neurons. Imbalances in signals between or within different parts of the brain result in myriad mental anomalies.

Anxiety is a result of an over-active amygdala- the fear center of the brain, resulting from an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory signals for this area, making sufferers more nervous and fearful than normal people. Severe anxiety disorders such as panic and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involve the same parts of the brain, only different disturbances in the ongoing signaling.

Depression, on the other hand, appears to be more complex. Firstly, the levels of chemical signals (neurotransmitters) called serotonin and dopamine are abnormal. Serotonin signals well-being and happiness to our brains while dopamine induces motivation. Secondly, the brain tissue is sometimes shrunken. Third, the ability to form new neurons and connections or repair and modify old ones is impaired. Lastly, immunity modulators called cytokines, which induce sickness behavior like staying indoors, sleeping a lot and generally, low energy levels are found in excessively high amounts in depressed individuals. Cytokine signaling is in fact elevated under chronic stress. Though depression manifests as slow behavioral changes that evade our observation, often simply under the cloak of sadness, it is a serious medical issue.

These findings imply that maladies of the mind are just like those of the body, say cancer or diabetes- complex diseases that manifest upon an interplay of genetic predispositions and environmental triggers- preventable, manageable, treatable. Basically, balanced neurological circuitry is essential for mental health.

Interestingly, we have also witnessed that most people tide over adversities, but some are unable to- not every victim of bullies becomes mentally ill. What determines mental resilience? Environment? Education? Or simply will power? Studies suggest that a feeling of security, purpose in life and positive experiences are the foundations to mental resilience. The sooner one starts building it, the better, but there is never a wrong time to build resilience. These building blocks are present both within and around us.

Happiness is Health

Preventing chronic negative thoughts is the key to a healthy mind. Children especially need to be allowed more leisure time. Physical activities like exercise, sports and dancing are known to release feel-good hormone endorphin which benefits the brain. Pursuing hobbies, activities that make you happy or fulfilled and content can keep you motivated in low phases of life, teaching you to celebrate little victories. A hearty laugh works the same way.

Invest time in friends and family. Talking to and confiding in someone trustworthy helps you create a support system that you can summon in times of distress or crises. Give the children around you their due time and attention. Cuddling with a pet and playing with kids generates oxytocin- the bonding hormone. Above all, sleep well, for it helps your body and mind heal itself. Rejuvenate them both time to time using tools like meditation to keep serotonin and dopamine balanced.

If circumstances still catch you unaware, know that help is out there, if not in your home, at the touch of a button. Mental health foundations and support groups are at your disposal if only you call them for help. Phone helplines and online counseling portals like “Type a Thought” and “mystruggles.in” – that keep your identity anonymous, exist to resolve your distress. Sometimes simply talking to friends or family is enough to help you tide through. If none of the above helps, tap into professional psychiatrists. Taking medication to relieve yourself of sickness is not a shame. Do you think twice before taking a pill for cold? You might not even need medication. Interventions like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you learn new thinking patterns, overcoming anxiety and fear.

If only we as a community realize that mental illnesses are not chosen by those who are ill, like any other ailment, and fulfill our roles as parents, teachers, and caregivers, healthy and happy youth is not a distant dream. If only we would give children enough time, attention and affection, they would not grow up as broken individuals. If only we learn to ask “How are you?” and really mean it; if only someone were to ask us “Are you alright?” at our most terrible times; if only we accepted the differences among people; if only no one shamed the fat teenager; if only we didn’t burden our children with our ambitions and expectations (and maybe instead followed them ourselves), we could save lakhs of lives. And that would be a life worth living. Wouldn’t it?

We must remember, childhood and adolescence are tender, confusing and ruthless, all at the same time. Young minds need a sense of belonging, affection, and appreciation to grow up normally with nurture, cautious prodding and guidance at every step. This journey translates into meaning and purpose around which their entire adult life would revolve. Many mental illness victims report feeling unloved, unnoticed, or worse – blamed, bullied, beaten and shamed as a youth. So, if we want to save more people from mental disorders, the younger we catch them, the better.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m exhausted”, or “I’m dead tired”? This is often how people unknowingly express the sensation of burnout. It is widely known that burnout is closely linked with stress, but it is much more than simply being tired, and it is often the case that the seriousness of burnout is overlooked.

Let us then ask the questions that need to be asked when talking about the subject of burnout. Is it possible to prevent burnout? How do we know when we have been exposed to either too much – positive or negative stress? How can we change our lifestyles accordingly to make the meaningful and sustained change to make ourselves more immune to burnout?

Stress is perception based

It is primarily our perception or evaluation of something that determines whether or not we become stressed. If we perceive an object to be too challenging or potentially dangerous in some way, the “flight” type of emotional and mental reactions surface, eventually influencing the body – this is the route of negative stress. If something is challenging enough and we deem the odds of success leading to a potential opportunity in our favour, the “fight” type of emotional and mental reactions occur, and we experience positive stress.

Regardless of the polarity of stress (positive or negative), biochemically your body reacts in the same way. Whenever our subconscious autopilot system detects a stressor, adrenaline and cortisol are released from our adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. Our blood pressure rises, our muscles tense, heart rate elevates, and digestion is inhibited, all preparing us to either fight or take flight. We all have experienced this feeling, like a sudden rush. However, being constantly exposed to prolonged episodes of stress impacts the health of our body and reinforces unhealthy patterns mentally as well as emotionally. It can weaken the immune system, cause more regular mood swings, and can manifest as if being ‘on the ashes’, ultimately resulting in burnout.

However, whether it is a one-time major life event (think of a tsunami), or the constant day-to-day sub-threshold sensation of being ‘stressed’ (think minor but regular waves), at one point you’ll reach your breaking point where the stress reaction gives way to exhaustion, resulting in the sensations of feeling burnt out.

I can handle everything – Always! Burnout usually works in either of the two ways, more frequently as a manifestation of chronic stress, or the result of one sudden life-changing event. Because burnout is closely linked with increasing stress, you may already assume that this isn’t a result of one single event but is rather a question of lifestyle choices and skills to handle the inner turmoil that gets triggered by certain events.

Burnout can happen to anyone and everyone, however, there are certain types of people more prone than others. Those who are success or achievement oriented, so-called “career” people, managers and entrepreneurs tend to be more susceptible. They are the people who seem capable of anything. These sorts of people live for their work, strive for success and never switch off.

They are burdened with numerous to-do lists and they check their work emails on a Sunday. They are always on the go and find it difficult taking time out. They validate themselves based on their achievements and getting things done. Even during their vacation, they feel the need to be on the go, filling their days with planned activities and engagements. The bigger picture is very often completely lost; they just don’t seem to be able to stop the lifestyle of ‘busyness’.

When you look at that description you may notice that these people seem invincible, they don’t seem to complain and seem to be able to manage everything. However, their lives are filled with dangerous amounts of positive stress or eustress. Of course, this positive stress feels good in the beginning and is indeed useful because it helps to get things done and achieve goals. However, in positive stress ‘mobilizing us for action’ means the constant release of adrenaline and cortisol from the adrenal glands – the stress hormones.

From the perspective of burnout, it is irrelevant whether the events that lead to the need to mobilize are “positive” or “negative” and if this lifestyle becomes habitual, it can quickly lead to near addiction because one adrenaline rush primes the craving for another. Negative stress is not a problem because everyone already avoids it due to its association with negative feelings. Most of the cases of burnout today are caused by people “riding the wave” of positive stress because people do not expect it to be dangerous – on the contrary, it is almost actively encouraged and often glorified.

Lifestyle Changes – No Easy Way Out

It is very much the common and accepted prevailing attitude of our modern working world that it’s perfectly normal to be “stressed”. It is no wonder then that more and more of us are facing burnout.

In order to prevent or recover from burnout, we must adjust our whole lifestyle. Already the term “lifestyle” suggests that this is not just a minor phenomenon that can be simply fixed with a few good night’s sleep or a vacation. This is not a bacterial infection that can be cured by taking a few pills and then rushing back to our “normal” life where stress reaction is considered inevitable. It is this attitude that is what really needs changing leading to skills that help in handling reactions.

One must consider both the physical and psychological sides, understanding that psychological arousal leads to a stress reaction in the physical body. It’s not just about reassessing values, setting priorities or time management. The most crucial elements to address are the chronic emotional and mental reactions.

What can be done to prevent burnout from taking hold? By educating ourselves on how we function internally will help us further understand the problems associated with burnout. This will help you make better and more informed choices for yourself.

Learning relaxation exercises, in particular stress relieving breathing exercises will also help, but in essence it’s already alleviating a consequence caused by a reaction. It is important to take time out during our busy days to just sit and simply be. It seems obvious, but many of us feel guilty for investing in sufficient leisure time. Make it a point to put aside a certain time each week to do that thing you have been meaning to do, make good on that promise to meet a friend, do something with your loved ones, or do something entirely for yourself. Just make sure you do it. Making sure we are getting 7-9 hours per night of continuous quality sleep can make all the difference in how we think and feel.

Finally, try consulting a competent specialist, psychiatrist, psychologist, nutrition therapist, fitness trainer, or a yoga teacher to guide you in all directions – physical, emotional, mental, conscious and the self. Seek a solution that enables you to release automatic emotional reactions. You have found an effective method when the same situations do not trigger the reaction that was previously the problem.

CONCLUSION

Burnout should not be underestimated or downplayed as a mere side effect of modern day living. In understanding the physiological effects, we see just how dangerous burnout can be in the long-term. By implementing a lifestyle adjustment will ensure that burnout is prevented, however learning to discontinue emotional reactions that lead to stimulation of the adrenal glands is the key. Learning intra-personal skills and training awareness will naturally expand your understanding in many other areas of life, helping to transition from dealing with problematic consequences to skillfully creating your own destiny.
